Hyporheic Exchange Flow In River Bars: Depicting Travel Times At High Temporal And Spatial Resolutions, Eatedal Alqusaireen Jan 2021

Hyporheic Exchange Flow In River Bars: Depicting Travel Times At High Temporal And Spatial Resolutions, Eatedal Alqusaireen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The movement of river water into subsurface, near-streambed sediments and its return to the main channel after relatively short travel pathways is known as Hyporheic Exchange Flow (HEF). Hyporheic exchange brings both solutes and particles into high specific surface area environments, where they suffer biogeochemical transformations which impact a streams water quality and ecology. These processes, which are the basis for the self-purification capacity of river systems, depend on the quantity and travel time of flow within the sediments. Most previous research has focused on the net, larger-scale exchange processes between stream water and sediments, but not on the flow …

The Influence Of Footwear Longitudinal Bending Stiffness On Running Economy And Biomechanics In Older Runners, Richard Beltran Jan 2021

The Influence Of Footwear Longitudinal Bending Stiffness On Running Economy And Biomechanics In Older Runners, Richard Beltran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Footwear longitudinal bending stiffness manipulated with carbon fiber inserts has shown conflicting findings on running economy in young runners. Given the lower ankle torque and power observed in older compared to young runners, more footwear bending stiffness could benefit running economy of older runners as it is expected to attenuate age-related changes in biomechanical function related to economy. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of running footwear longitudinal bending stiffness manipulated using carbon fiber inserts on running economy and biomechanics of older runners. Nine runners over 60 years (four women) completed five-minute running bouts at their …

Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Activation And Its Role In Skin Physiology And Toxicology, Jyoti Bhuju Jan 2021

Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Activation And Its Role In Skin Physiology And Toxicology, Jyoti Bhuju

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a persistent organic pollutant that causes toxicity by activating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). Activation of the AHR has been linked to an increased risk of developing skin diseases including chloracne and atopic dermatitis (AD). We investigated the effects of perinatal exposure to TCDD on the development of the epidermal barrier and the susceptibility to skin diseases in C57BL/6J mice. Mice were exposed in utero to 5 g/ kg bw TCDD on embryonic day 12 and the cutaneous effects were studied from postnatal day 1 (P1) through adult life. TCDD-exposed pups exhibited diffuse epidermal hyperplasia at birth; …

Examining Bereavement-Related Needs And Outcomes Among Survivors Of Sudden Loss: A Latent Profile Analysis, Jamison Scott Bottomley Jan 2021

Examining Bereavement-Related Needs And Outcomes Among Survivors Of Sudden Loss: A Latent Profile Analysis, Jamison Scott Bottomley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The loss of a loved one due to sudden causes is a relatively common phenomenon, with nearly half of adults in the United States reporting at least one impactful unexpected loss of a close other in their lifetime. Although the majority of people who experience the death of a loved one will adjust without impairment, individuals who are confronted with the sudden loss of a loved one face a number of challenges that leave them vulnerable to mental health and grief-related complications (e.g., complicated grief, PTSD, mood and anxiety-related disorders, suicide risk, feelings of guilt and shame). Given the panoply …

The Anatomy Of The Commencement Speech: An Examination Of Barack Obamas Rhetoric Delivered At Hbcus, Damariye Smith Jan 2021

The Anatomy Of The Commencement Speech: An Examination Of Barack Obamas Rhetoric Delivered At Hbcus, Damariye Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been a central institution to the sociopolitical progress of the Black community towards freedom and liberation. Despite the centrality of HBCUs within Black upward mobility, limited attention has been paid to the discourses that takes place at these sites by rhetorical scholars. Equally important, rhetorical interventions on the rhetoric of the nations first Black President, Barack H. Obama, at HBCUs has also been overlooked. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation is to determine the rhetorical construction of HBCU commencement rhetoric and Obamas rhetorical invention. To approach these inquiries, I conduct a rhetorical analysis …

Fugitive Gestures: The Persistence Of Black Meaning And Black Life In An Anti-Black World, Jasmine Wallace Jan 2021

Fugitive Gestures: The Persistence Of Black Meaning And Black Life In An Anti-Black World, Jasmine Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

My dissertation, Fugitive Gestures: The persistence of Black meaning and Black life in an anti-Black world, develops a phenomenological analysis of contemporary Black lived experience in the US occuring in fugitive spaces--territories independent of white supremacy and anti-Black disciplinary techniques. In contrast to Afropessimists who argue that contemporary Black subjects exists as nonbeing, I demonstrate the presence of contemporary Black meaning and Black being as expressed in Black gestures. First, I develop the concept 'Black archive' to describe how contemporary subjects live with the conceptual awareness of historical anti-Blackness as it unfolds in the present; are symbolically marked by 'hieroglyphics …

Covid-19 Mutual Aid, Anti-Authoritarian Activism, And The Law, Michael Haber Jan 2021

Covid-19 Mutual Aid, Anti-Authoritarian Activism, And The Law, Michael Haber

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe in the spring of 2020, thousands of grassroots, participatory, and often social movement-connected community efforts to help feed, shelter, and care for one another through the crisis were launched, many of which identified their projects as “mutual aid.” This article presents an overview of mutual aid and gives an introduction to the legal issues being confronted by mutual aid groups. It begins by presenting a history of mutual aid practices, principally in the U.S. context, situating mutual aid within the political framework of anti-authoritarian activism. It then gives an overview of common …

Corporate Entanglement With Religion And The Suppression Of Expression, Ronald J. Colombo Jan 2021

Corporate Entanglement With Religion And The Suppression Of Expression, Ronald J. Colombo

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The power and ability of corporations to assert their First Amendment rights to the detriment of others remains both a controversial and unresolved issue. Adverting to relevant strands of existing jurisprudence and certain constitutionally relevant factors, this Article suggests a solution. The path turns upon the recognition that whereas some corporations are appropriately categorized as rights-bearing entities (akin to associations), others are more appropriately categorized as "entities against which the rights of individuals can be asserted." Legislation, in the form of the draft "CENSOR" Act, is provided as a means by which to implement this categorization. What hopefully emerges is …

Virtuous Law-Breaking, G. Alex Sinha Jan 2021

Virtuous Law-Breaking, G. Alex Sinha

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

A rapidly growing body of scholarship embraces virtue jurisprudence, a series of (often ad hoc) attempts to incorporate the philosophical tradition of virtue ethics into legal theory. Broadly understood, virtue ethics describes an approach to moral questions that emphasizes the importance of developing and embodying various virtues, often as manifestations of human flourishing. Scholars typically contrast virtue ethics with deontological and consequentialist moral theories, tracing virtue-centered analysis to ancient Greek philosophers, and in particular to Aristotle. Virtue ethics has experienced a revival over the past 65 years; but, long before that, it proved especially influential in Catholic moral thought, particularly …

Digitize Your Yearbooks: Creating Digital Access While Considering Student Privacy And Other Legal Issues, April K. Anderson-Zorn, Dallas Long Jan 2021

Digitize Your Yearbooks: Creating Digital Access While Considering Student Privacy And Other Legal Issues, April K. Anderson-Zorn, Dallas Long

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Student yearbooks are distinctive cultural records. For the schools and universities that produced them, yearbooks promoted a shared sense of identity and experience among students and helped create enduring loyalty to the institutions long after the students graduated. For scholars and other users, yearbooks are unique primary sources that provide insight into past eras of local student life and culture. In regards to user engagement and preserving local histories, student yearbooks should be ideal candidates for digitization by libraries and archives. However, yearbooks are challenging digitization projects because they are likely to contain privacy-sensitive photographs and other information as well …

Caremark And Esg, Perfect Together: A Practical Approach To Implementing An Integrated, Efficient, And Effective Caremark And Eesg Strategy, Leo E. Strine Jr., Kirby M. Smith, Reilly S. Steel

Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership

With increased calls from investors, legislators, and academics for corporations to consider employee, environmental, social, and governance factors (“EESG”) when making decisions, boards and managers are struggling to situate EESG within their existing reporting and organizational structures. Building on an emerging literature connecting EESG with corporate compliance, this Essay argues that EESG is best understood as an extension of the board’s duty to implement and monitor a compliance program under Caremark. If a company decides to do more than the legal minimum, it will simultaneously satisfy legitimate demands for strong EESG programs and promote compliance with the law. Building on …

The Right To The City: San Francisco's Chinatown Before And After The 1906 Earthquake, Alexandra Hsu Jan 2021

The Right To The City: San Francisco's Chinatown Before And After The 1906 Earthquake, Alexandra Hsu

Scripps Senior Theses

The development of San Francisco, much like many American cities, is deeply entwined with the spatial process of settler-colonialism. Fueled by White supremacist processes of appropriation, dispossession and exclusion, city officials and White San Franciscans legally, financially, and socially segregated Chinese immigrants who entered into the U.S. context to a dense and degraded ethnic enclave. Henri Lefebvre and David Harvey theorize on The Right to the City, the social production of space and the ways in which social processes can be concretized by space. This thesis applies these concepts to the racialized space of San Francisco’s Chinatown. An examination of …

Eye Of The Beholder: How The Female And Male Gazes Perpetuate Anti-Catholicism And The Cult Of Domesticity In The Awful Disclosures Of Maria Monk And Matthew Gregory Lewis’ The Monk, Olivia Silva

Scripps Senior Theses

Based on our own privileges and placement within the social hierarchy, we each view the world differently depending on how we identify. Oftentimes, this "gaze" is incorporated into media through narrative voices and characters to induce understandings as well as act as a form of political commentary. Readers and viewers, in turn, can gain different and more diverse perspectives through seeing the world through different eyes. This paper examines the role of gaze in the 19th century Anti-Catholic convent exposé The Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk. Monk's narrative surrounds a victimized Catholic nun and uses a gaze that is similar …

College Students "Coupling Up" With Reality Dating Shows: The Interpersonal Relationships Fostered By Reality Dating Show Viewership, Juliana Romeo

Scripps Senior Theses

On college campuses across the US on Monday evenings, groups of college students cluster around laptops and dorm lounge TVs to watch The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. Viewership of reality dating shows is clearly a popular social activity among students, but why? What needs are college students fulfilling with their viewership of this genre? This thesis explores college students’ relationship with reality dating shows and specifically how college students connect the realities of the contestants, the media space, and their everyday lives. Over nine months, I conducted ethnographic interviews and focus groups with twenty-one college students at residential colleges …

The Internet-Extended Mind: The Psychological Ramifications And Philosophical Implications Of Cognitive Offloading, Gloria Choi Jan 2021

The Internet-Extended Mind: The Psychological Ramifications And Philosophical Implications Of Cognitive Offloading, Gloria Choi

Scripps Senior Theses

In this thesis, I explore the internet-extended mind through both philosophical and psychological lenses in order to investigate the questions “To what extent is the mind extended onto the internet and, more generally, outside our bodies?” and “How will an increasingly internet-extended brain change the ways in which humans communicate, remember, and behave?”. First, I introduce the idea of a mind that extends out into the world, instead of lying solely in the brain. Then, I outline existing research that introduces the challenges and implications of an internet-extended mind in an ever-changing internet landscape. Next, I discuss how the internet …

Global Coordination Between Gene Expression Processes In C. Crescentus, James Raymond Aretakis Jan 2021

Global Coordination Between Gene Expression Processes In C. Crescentus, James Raymond Aretakis

Wayne State University Dissertations

Gene expression is an essential process of all organisms which occurs in two steps, mRNA transcription, and translation and which is shut off by mRNA decay. For a bacterium to grow and divide, these steps need to be tuned to optimize the synthesis rates of thousands of proteins from their genes. Genome-wide experiments were used to determine the absolute transcription rates, mRNA degradation rates, and translation rates on a gene by gene basis in the model bacterium Caulobacter crescentus. This not only provides a system biology view of the organism’s gene expression resource allocation, but also provides a chance to …

Authentic Assessments: Preparing Undergraduate Computing Students For A New Future Of Remote Internships, Farrah Higgins Jan 2021

Authentic Assessments: Preparing Undergraduate Computing Students For A New Future Of Remote Internships, Farrah Higgins

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

It is accepted practice now in higher education in Ireland that assessments should be designed to assess the learning outcomes of a module and the skills needed for professional practice. Due to the current demands and challenges of remote working, employers are looking for a new set of employability skills where graduates can work autonomously and network remotely. Authentic assessments are an opportunity to produce ‘remote work ready’ graduates for this new working environment. However, authentic assessments can be decontextualised if they are designed without considering both academic outcomes and industry/real-world activities. The following practitioner case study reviews the research …

Building Multistories: Embedding The Library Services For Inclusive Teaching And Learning In A Diverse Curriculum., Fionnuala Darby, Lindsay Dowling

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

There is an expanding shift in the academy to pedagogical developments that aim to address the shortage of custodians of knowledge from Black and ethnic minorities as a contributing factor in sustaining systemic racism and stereotypes in higher education. Further to this, Appleton states that decolonising will only take place and be successful if there are real structural changes in the module, programme, inside the classroom and across the university to create equity and fairness of experience and outcome for every student irrespective of their background. Building MultiStories is constructed as a process whereby staff and students, together, work to …

Twitter News And The Uninformed Citizen, Will Harris Jan 2021

Twitter News And The Uninformed Citizen, Will Harris

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This essay examines how social media as a source of news has severely impacted the political knowledge of the citizens of the United States. Research shows that while the media traditionally has been a moderator that sought to improve knowledge among voters and inspire them to determine their own beliefs, the rise of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter have inspired a polarizing effect on those who use the platform. Thus, social media is driving both conservatives and liberals away from the middle without providing them the knowledge that they need to have informed opinions. This study sought …

The Downturn Of Representative Democracy: An Analysis Of How Strategic Voting Drives Political Polarization, Anna Eager Jan 2021

The Downturn Of Representative Democracy: An Analysis Of How Strategic Voting Drives Political Polarization, Anna Eager

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Over the years, polarization in America has not only increased but also become more ideologically focused on in government. Furthermore, scholarship on polarization has ignored the payoffs that political actors seek while they pursue re-election. Elected representatives have numerous objectives to balance while in office. Not only do they need to manage the preferences of the people and the party, but re-election is at the centerfold of their decision-making process. To evaluate this decision-making process a difference is identified between actual vs. perceived polarization. By illustrating a gap between the constituents’ preferences and representatives’ voting choices via actual and perceived …

The Muslim Brotherhood’S Influence And The Democratization Of The Middle East, Samira K. Kassem Jan 2021

The Muslim Brotherhood’S Influence And The Democratization Of The Middle East, Samira K. Kassem

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Muslim Brotherhood is the most well-known and influential Islamist group in the Middle East and has been since its founding in 1928. The group has been condemned by the West, specifically the United States, for being too radical, as well as by other radical Islamist groups, who accuse the Brother hood of embracing democracy and denying jihad. This study aims to determine how the Muslim Brotherhood gained their influence and whether their existence has had a positive or negative effect on democratization in the region. Specifically, it explores how colonialism in the region allowed the Muslim Brotherhood to gain …

A Perfect Recipe: The Reemergence Of Democratization In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Rachel Williams Jan 2021

A Perfect Recipe: The Reemergence Of Democratization In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Rachel Williams

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

After German dictator Adolf Hitler presumably committed suicide in 1945, his authoritarian regime fell, the Allies won World War II, and democracy reemerged in the form of the Federal Republic of Germany (F.R.G.). The transition to democracy was made possible by the intervention of international actors (the western Allies), the discontinuity of the Nazi party and its elites, and the formation of new, democratic parties (the Christian Democratic Union, Christian Social Union, and Social Democratic Party). Each of these factors combined to result in a high-functioning democracy by 1960 in which democratic participation was encouraged. This case is unique in …

Conference papers

CONTEXT Engineering is uniquely placed to help address global challenges such as those surrounding the climate crisis, and the sustainable use and management of resources. However, studies have found UK engineering companies that have adopted sustainability strategies do not have enough staff with the skills to achieve them. There is an urgent need to upskill the current workforce and prepare future generations to operate in a responsible and ethical manner in tackling today's challenges. Recent updates to the standard of engineering accreditation in the UK provide notable opportunities to transform university curricula to create globally responsible engineers.

PURPOSE This preliminary …

Image Transmission Over Resource-Constrained Low-Power Radio Networks, Paschal O'Connor Jan 2021

Image Transmission Over Resource-Constrained Low-Power Radio Networks, Paschal O'Connor

Masters

The transmission of large amounts of data over resource-constrained radio frequency (RF) networks is impacted by regulatory constraints and can affect reliability due to channel congestion. These barriers limit the use case to specific applications. This research extends the use case scenario to include the transmission of digital images over such networks which to date has not been widely documented. To achieve this, the overall data volume needs to be reduced to manageable limits. Drawing on previous theoretical work this research explored, developed and implemented novel image compression techniques suitable for use in resource-constrained RF networks.

A compression technique was …
