Metabolic Adaptation To The Chronic Loss Of Ca 2+ Signaling Induced By Ko Of Ip 3 Receptors Or The Mitochondrial Ca 2+ Uniporter, Michael P. Young, Zachary T Schug, David M. Booth, David I Yule, Katsuhiko Mikoshiba, György Hajnóczky, Suresh K Joseph
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Calcium signaling is essential for regulating many biological processes. Endoplasmic reticulum inositol trisphosphate receptors (IP3Rs) and the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter (MCU) are key proteins that regulate intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Mitochondrial Ca2+ accumulation activates Ca2+-sensitive dehydrogenases of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle that maintain the biosynthetic and bioenergetic needs of both normal and cancer cells. However, the interplay between calcium signaling and metabolism is not well understood. In this study, we used human cancer cell lines (HEK293 and HeLa) with stable KOs of all three IP3R isoforms (triple KO [TKO]) or MCU to examine metabolic and bioenergetic responses to the chronic …
The Effects Of Covid-19 On The Service Delivery Of Speech And Language Therapy: A Literature Review, Hanna Hill
The Effects Of Covid-19 On The Service Delivery Of Speech And Language Therapy: A Literature Review, Hanna Hill
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the effects of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the service delivery of speech and language therapy services in schools, early intervention, and outpatient settings. This analysis examined various service delivery settings in the realm of speech-language therapy that were affected by COVID-19. Per guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), worldwide governing legislatures, and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), many measures were put into place throughout the spread of COVID-19. Quarantine, the use of various protective tools, and social distancing interrupted face-to-face services that are essential to …

Vaccine uptake is a multifactor measure of successful immunization outcomes that includes access to healthcare and vaccine hesitancy for both healthcare workers and communities. The present coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the need for novel strategies to expand vaccine coverage in underserved regions. Mobile clinics hold the promise of ameliorating such inequities, although there is a paucity of studies that validate environmental infection in such facilities. Here, we describe community-based management of COVID-19 through a Smart Pod mobile clinic deployed in an underserved community area in the United States (Aldine, Harris County, TX, USA). In particular, we validate infection …

A Survey Of Machine Learning Techniques For Video Quality Prediction From Quality Of Delivery Metrics, Obinna Izima, Ruairí De Fréin, Ali Malik
Articles
A growing number of video streaming networks are incorporating machine learning (ML) applications. The growth of video streaming services places enormous pressure on network and video content providers who need to proactively maintain high levels of video quality. ML has been applied to predict the quality of video streams. Quality of delivery (QoD) measurements, which capture the end-to-end performances of network services, have been leveraged in video quality prediction. The drive for end-to-end encryption, for privacy and digital rights management, has brought about a lack of visibility for operators who desire insights from video quality metrics. In response, numerous solutions …

In the scope of mitigating the negative impacts of pesticide use and managing greenhouse whiteflies, Trialeurodes vaporariorum sustainably, 16 endophytic fungal isolates from five different genera (Beauveria, Trichoderma, Hypocrea, Bionectria, and Fusarium) were screened for their ability to colonise two preferred host plant species, namely, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), through seed inoculation. Seven and nine isolates were endophytic to P. vulgaris and S. lycopersicum, respectively, where significant differences in the endophytic colonisation rates were observed among the fungal isolates in P. vulgaris and its plant parts, with a significant interaction between the isolates and …

BACKGROUND: Adherence to treatment, i.e. the extent to which a patient's therapeutic engagement coincides with the prescribed treatment, is among the most important problems in mental health care. The current study investigated the influence of pairing an acute positive reinforcing dopaminergic/noradrenergic effect (methylphenidate, MPH) with a standard antidepressant on the rates of adherence to medication treatment. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether MPH + escitalopram resulted in higher rates of medication adherence relative to placebo + escitalopram.
METHODS: Twenty participants with moderate to severe depression were 1-1 randomized to either (1) 5 mg MPH + 10 …
The Protectors, Keimya Harris
The Protectors, Keimya Harris
B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)
Many black people like myself loved seeing someone that looked like us in the media and print. It was rare and few to see shows and media that embraced black culture no matter how big or small the role was. As a child in order to cope with the minimal amount of black media and print I decided to create my own stories and make black characters the forefront within my stories.
When creating The Protectors it allowed me to create a new narrative that challenges having a white person as the main character and eliminates the trope of a …

The Appropriation Of Sidewalks For E-Scooter; From The Urban Built Environment Perspective, Adinda Smaradhana Rachmanto
Smart City
One of the most popular types of micromobility that has rapidly grown in Europe for some recent years is an electric scooter (e-scooter). An emerging phenomenon occurred in many places, including Stockholm. Regardless of some positive claims about e-scooters in urban areas, e-scooters also contribute to new urban problems. Some of the problems occurred in the sidewalk environment, and those issues are widely discussed among pedestrians. Therefore, this study will investigate how the presence of e-scooters affected the pedestrian around Stockholm inner-city based on the experience of various groups of people that use sidewalk environments, including pedestrian and e-scooter users. …

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Famed Italian soprano Anita Cerquetti died on October 11, 2014 with much media discussion of her brilliant ca reer and its puzzling end. Born in April 1931, she made a debut as Aida at age 20 in Spoleto, with reviews praising her "limpid tone and powerful voice:' A yea r later she appeared twice in Il trovatore at Milan's Teatro Nuovo, and in a series of concerts with Beniamino Gigli. In summer 1953 she sang Aida at the Verona Arena, following Callas's appearances there in the same role; her reviews were complimentary, but the major theaters continued to ignore her-she …

Embracing The Non-Traditional: Incorporating Non-Traditional Elements Into Library Identity, Melissa Fraser-Arnott
Embracing The Non-Traditional: Incorporating Non-Traditional Elements Into Library Identity, Melissa Fraser-Arnott
Urban Library Journal
A shift in library and librarian identities occurs as libraries and library workers evolve and explore new practices. These changes prompt a discussion of what constitutes “traditional” and “non-traditional” practice in libraries. Identity and gatekeeper theories provide a lens through which the process of introducing and incorporating professional practices in libraries can be understood and offer insights into how ‘non-traditional’ ideas can be incorporated into the concepts of what constitute library collections and services for library workers and other stakeholders. Acceptance of non-traditional practice is aided by three factors. First, library organizational and professional identities must be sufficiently broad to …

Defining The American Dream: A Generational Comparison, Clara R. Riggio
Defining The American Dream: A Generational Comparison, Clara R. Riggio
Modern Psychological Studies
The American Dream has functioned as an idealized view of success in the United States since its conception in the 1930s. As generations pass, questions of plausibility and definition surround the American Dream. Over the course of 20 semi-structured interviews composed of open-ended questions, participants were asked how they defined the American Dream and how plausible they felt achieving the American Dream was for them. The participants were then compared across age differences. Across participants, six clear themes were most often associated with the American Dream: hard work, freedom, social mobility, material gain, family connection, and individuality. Older participants had …
