New England Journal of Public Policy
Several of the articles in this issue of the New England Journal of Public Policy have a global focus, identifying threats to humanity’s future, some existential, that can be addressed only through unprecedented levels of international cooperation and new ways of thinking. But the global future is uncertain, whether because of conflict, extremism, the rise of nationalism, the retreat from democracy and its underlying value system, or moribund multilateral institutions and lack of leadership, much of which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than humanity coming together to face a common existential threat, countries retreated into their national …
Reinventing Multilateral Order, Sundeep Waslekar
Reinventing Multilateral Order, Sundeep Waslekar
New England Journal of Public Policy
The multiple crises of our time result from the breakdown of the multilateral order. Some of these crises may intensify between now and 2030. Multilateral organizations have been eroded to the extent that they are unable to manage catastrophic risk, including a military confrontation between superpowers. The weakening of multilateralism is mirrored in the strengthening of hypernationalism in many countries. It will not be sufficient to mend the multilateral system. It is necessary, instead, to envisage new principles for creating a global governance grid superseding the United Nations Security Council that serves the interests of human civilization and not the …
An Introduction To Right-Wing Extremism In India, Mohammed Sinan Siyech
An Introduction To Right-Wing Extremism In India, Mohammed Sinan Siyech
New England Journal of Public Policy
Right-wing extremism has had a long history in India with the current atmosphere heavily tilted in favor of right-wing extremists. This article explores the history of the right wing in the nation and various factors that strengthened different actors within this spectrum of politics in India. Relying on secondary sources, it notes that the Indian caste system has played a role in bolstering the Hindu majoritarian identity that is currently dominant in India apart from various other factors, such as the incompetency of other political parties (including left-wing parties). Drawing on several examples, it argues that the unwillingness of the …
Challenges For Multilateralism In A Pre-Post-Covid World, Richard Caplan
Challenges For Multilateralism In A Pre-Post-Covid World, Richard Caplan
New England Journal of Public Policy
Multilateralism today faces numerous challenges. This article offers some reflections on those challenges—what they are and how they originated—and how multilateralism can be reinvigorated. It argues that though multilateralism is not a panacea, many of the critical challenges that confront humanity today—biodiversity, cybersecurity, global warming, mass migration, arms proliferation, and the regulation of outer space, as well as the spread of infectious diseases—can be met only with states and peoples cooperating more closely.
Mothers' Drinking Motives, Sheila Kathleen Umemoto
Mothers' Drinking Motives, Sheila Kathleen Umemoto
Dissertations and Theses
Increases in women's excessive alcohol use are leading to concerns about a developing public health problem since, for women, it takes fewer years and lower doses to develop a range of alcohol-induced health problems. Maternal status is generally considered protective against alcohol use; however, this effect is weakened by multiple social role strain, leading to higher stress and negative affect, and subsequent coping-related alcohol use. Given that the majority of mothers with young children are working or looking for work (72.3%; BLS, 2021), it is likely that the combination of competing demands and expectations associated with multiple roles of parent, …

Data-Driven Damage Initiation Criteria For Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Alexander Richard Post
Data-Driven Damage Initiation Criteria For Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Alexander Richard Post
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Computational progressive failure analysis (PFA) is vital for the design, verification, and validation of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. However, the computational cost of PFA is usually high due to the complexity of the model. The damage initiation criterion is one of the essential components of a PFA code to determine the transition of a material’s state from pristine or microscopically damaged to macroscopically damaged. In this thesis, data-driven models are developed to determine the matrix damage initiation based on the Mohr-Coulomb model and Hashin model. For 2D plane stress states, the computational cost for determining damage initiation can …

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The digital age has given rise to new pathways for everyday individuals to accrue media attention, which can be translated into promotional endeavors. Such sociocultural currency is referred to as celebrity capital, which can be exchanged within the field of advertising through celebrity endorsements. Traditional celebrities acquire celebrity capital through institutional intermediaries such as sport, television, music, and movies. Research is needed to understand the unique process by which social media influencers (SMIs) acquire celebrity capital. We draw on interviews with 40 global advertising industry practitioners and influencers to better understand how influencers acquire celebrity capital in a saturated media …

Stay In Touch: An Interaction Design Project For Managing And Facilitating Healthy Long-Distance Relationships, Zhichao Zhou
Theses
The global pandemic has deepened an epidemic of loneliness in America. Quarantine during COVID-19 restricts in-person social activities that make managing long-distance relationships challenging. People feel uncomfortable and less confident to maintain healthy relationships in a virtual world. My thesis explores interaction methods to encourage people to stay in touch in long-distance relationships through establishing and maintaining communication contracts. To solve the problem, I designed Stay In Touch - a mobile APP and a watch to provide users a quick and interesting way to monitor and manage long-distance relationships. The APP helps people manage connections and take quick reach-out actions. …

Impact Of Social Support On The Physical Activity Behaviors Of International College Students In The United States, Mohammed A. Alshehri, Aaron Kruse-Diehr, Justin Tyler Mcdaniel, Julie Partridge, Dawn Christina Null
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 14(5): 1305-1319, 2021. Research has suggested that international students’ transition to the United States is often correlated with less physical activity after arriving in the U.S). One reason might be related to reduced social support when living in a foreign environment. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to assess the impact of social support on international college students’ physical activity behaviors. Participants (N = 318) from five public universities in one Midwest state completed an electronic survey assessing self-reported physical activity behaviors and perceived social support for exercise (SSE). Data analyses included multiple …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 14(3): 1320-1333, 2021. Exercise training is known to reduce CVD risk factors; however, in tactical populations, like veterans and firefighters, the effects of different forms of exercise such as tactical circuit training (CT) or conventional resistance training (RT) is unclear. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare changes in various CVD risk measures after 4-week tactical CT or RT programs. Thirty-seven firefighters (20 CT, 17 RT), 35% of whom were veterans, participated. Pre- and post-intervention measures included body fat (BF%), carotid artery intima media thickness (IMT), central and brachial BP, and indices of …
Note On The Restoration Of Five Egyptian Mosques, Monica Hanna
Note On The Restoration Of Five Egyptian Mosques, Monica Hanna
Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists
[En]This paper discusses the cultural loss of five Egyptian mosques in Egypt due to their renovation. While illicit digging, encroachment, and real estate unplanned development has damaged ancient Egyptian heritage, in particular in the last eleven years, Egypt has a long history of faulty restorations of Islamic monuments, which include demolition, wholesome reconstruction, and unhistorical additions. Few of the original early Islamic monuments survive today, the oldest being the Nilometer on Rawḍa Island (AD 869), which dates to two hundred years after the Arab conquest of Egypt. Interventions in the capital Cairo are often subjected to media coverage and …

Contributions Of Muslim Mechanical Engineers In Modern Automata (In The Light Of Kitāb Al-Ḥiyal Of Al- Ǧazarī) A Descriptive And Analytical Study, Dr.Boussy Muhammad Zidan
Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists
(En)
Were the Muslims in ancient times highly proficient in mechanical engineering? Did they have a head start over the West in this field? Unfortunately, it is noticeable nowadays that Arabs and Muslims all over the world became just consumers; exploiting all technological developments of the West that are rapidly growing. Here we had to wonder whether the Arab Muslims, long ago, was in this manner. This research hypothesizes that Muslims had attained an advanced level of mechanical engineering and were the inventors of the self-moving artifacts; recently known as automata. Accordingly, this research has undertaken the mission to prove …

Reflections On Trauma: A Phenomenological Qualitative Secondary Analysis Of Archived Interviews About Adolescent Experiences During The 1970 Kent State Student Shootings, Sheryl L. Chatfield, Kristen A. Debois, Erin Orlins
The Qualitative Report
Among short-term mental health consequences for adolescents who have proximate or direct experience with mass shootings in school settings are posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic stress disorder. Identifying incidence of enduring mental health impacts is challenging due to difficulty of tracking individuals into adulthood. The purpose of this paper is to use qualitative secondary analysis to explore how seven individuals reflectively describe and interpret their lived experiences as adolescents during the May 4, 1970, Kent State University Vietnam protest that resulted in deaths and injuries to students fired upon by Ohio National Guard. Archived transcripts from interviews conducted up to 48 …
Federalism And The Limits Of Subnational Political Heterogeneity, James A. Gardner
Federalism And The Limits Of Subnational Political Heterogeneity, James A. Gardner
Journal Articles
With an epidemic of democratic backsliding now afflicting many of the world’s democracies, including the United States, some scholars have suggested that federalism might serve as a useful defense for liberal democracy by impeding the ability of an authoritarian central government to stamp it out at the subnational level. In this Essay, I dispute that contention. An examination of both federal theory on one hand and the behavior and tactics of central control employed by ancient and early modern empires on the other leads to the conclusion that the protective value of federalism against the effects of national authoritarianism is …

Recent Advances In The Use Of Transglutaminase In Cheese Production, El Kiyat Warsono, Laurenthia Evlyn, Michaela Janice, Fariz Pari Rizfi
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
Various enzymes are used in the food industry to improve product quality. The enzyme transglutaminase is used to modify proteins in various foods through the formation of inter- and intramolecular epsilon-(gamma-glutamyl) lysine bonds. Previous studies have revealed that using transglutaminase in cheese production can increase the yield and enhance the characteristics of various types of cheese. However, the enzyme concentration, temperature, and pH influence the quality of cheese. This review aimed to discuss the potential of transglutaminase in cheese production. Our analysis showed that transglutaminase catalyzes the formation of covalent bonds between milk proteins (crosslinking), which results in a greater …

Meaningful Careers In Social Enterprises In Remote Australia: Employment Decisions Among Australian Indigenous Art Centre Workers, Pi-Shen Seet, Janice Jones, Tim Acker, Uma Jogulu
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This research investigates why Indigenous workers decide to enter, stay or leave their positions in art centres that serve as important social enterprises in remote Australia. We develop a framework that integrates identity theory and push–pull theory via institutional logics, thereby extending Wry and York (2017)’s typology configurations that is applicable to other actors in the entrepreneurial eco-system, including Indigenous art centre workers. Based on a qualitative study of 72 Indigenous art centre workers employed in remote Australia, the results indicate that although art centres have dual for-profit and social missions, it is mainly pull factors related to paid, local …
