Does Mattering Really Matter To Graduate Students?, Jodi Colleen Ost Jan 2021

Does Mattering Really Matter To Graduate Students?, Jodi Colleen Ost

Education

As graduate student attrition hovers around 50%, scholars are beginning to study what is leading to these high attrition rates (Wao, 2010). As there has been little theoretical work done on graduate student retention, a review of the literature related to undergraduate student engagement and retention provides a starting point for developing theories of graduate student engagement and retention. One theory of undergraduate student engagement and retention relates to feelings of mattering. Mattering is a sense that other people care about you as it involves facets of feeling important to others, being noticed by others, that others are proud of …

Feminist Mentorship: Women Leading Men In Counselor Education, Erin Rachel Hagen Jan 2021

Feminist Mentorship: Women Leading Men In Counselor Education, Erin Rachel Hagen

Education

This Interpretative Phenomenological Study was initiated to explore the lived experiences of mentorship pairs in counselor education doctoral studies. The research question guiding this study was: what are the qualities of the mentoring relationship between female, cisgender, feminist-oriented counselor education mentors and their male cisgender traditionally-oriented doctoral counselor education mentees? This pair was identified for exploration by noting a gap in mentorship literature that recognizes the unique relational qualities and mentorship outcomes with cross-gender pairs, and the specific influence of feminist orientation on male mentees and the mentorship process. Cross-gender mentorship is addressed in literature but dominantly refers to men …

Conceptual Cost Estimation Models For Bridge Projects, Adikie Esinam Essegbey Jan 2021

Conceptual Cost Estimation Models For Bridge Projects, Adikie Esinam Essegbey

Construction Management and Engineering

Conceptual cost estimating is typically completed early in the project lifecycle when little design work has been completed. Because little information is known at this early stage, the estimate usually deviates substantially from the actual construction cost. Therefore, the objective of this research is to develop a conceptual cost estimate model for bridge infrastructure projects. In this study, a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of Mean Average Percentage Errors (MAPEs) of cost models was undertaken to identify the various cost estimation methods, the input variables that have adopted in the development of models and determine the impact of cost estimation …

The Influence Of The Psychophysical Assessment Paradigm On Pitch Discrimination For Adults (And A Pilot Sample Of Children), Ashley G. Flagge, Lucile Puranen, Madhuri S. Mulekar Jan 2021

The Influence Of The Psychophysical Assessment Paradigm On Pitch Discrimination For Adults (And A Pilot Sample Of Children), Ashley G. Flagge, Lucile Puranen, Madhuri S. Mulekar

Ashley Flagge Publications

Pitch discrimination ability has been of research interest due to its potential relationship to language and literacy. However, assessment protocols for pitch discrimination have varied widely. Prior studies with both children and adults have produced conflicting performance findings across different pitch discrimination research paradigms, though they have consistently shown that discrimination accuracy is based on the psychophysical assessment method applied. In the present study, we examined pitch discrimination performance among convenience samples of 19 adult women and ten female children across six different adaptive psychophysical measurement conditions. We found pitch discrimination performance in both groups to be impacted by the …

Corrosion Investigation Of Structural Transition Joints Through Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy And The Characterization Of High-Temperature Coatings At Different Temperatures, Luke Peter Wiering Jan 2021

Corrosion Investigation Of Structural Transition Joints Through Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy And The Characterization Of High-Temperature Coatings At Different Temperatures, Luke Peter Wiering

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Scanning electrochemical microscopy is a method that incorporates an ultramicroelectrode capable of facilitating electrochemical reactions paired with an XYZ positioning system capable of micron-level movements. This study investigates the corrosion behavior of structural transition joint clad material that contains steel, pure aluminum, and an aluminum alloy blast welded into a single joint. This study will characterize the corrosion response of the structural transition joint and identify the galvanic activity measured between its layers. High-temperature coatings in this study are designed to be used effectively up to 1400°F. In this study, we characterized several commercial high-temperature coatings exposed to different levels …

Advancing Plant Protein-Based Proteoposite Films Targeted For Food Packaging Applications. A Combined Computational And Experimental Approach, Kristen Lorraine Patnode Jan 2021

Advancing Plant Protein-Based Proteoposite Films Targeted For Food Packaging Applications. A Combined Computational And Experimental Approach, Kristen Lorraine Patnode

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Demand for polymeric, plastic materials continues to grow each year. However, the limited supply of fossil-fuels and negative environmental impact caused by petrochemical products have led to an increased demand for bio-based plastic alternatives. While there is great interest in developing plant-based alternatives to plastic packaging products, industrial applications of such materials are limited and development of said products is time, cost, and resource consuming. For this reason, advanced, marketable plant-based bioplastics must be developed more efficiently. To achieve such a goal, this thesis outlines a combined computational and experimental approach which results in novel plant proteins-based (proteoposite) films, that …

Phytic Acid Enriched Biobased Membranes For Lead Ion Removal From Water, Mayur Indal Ukey Jan 2021

Phytic Acid Enriched Biobased Membranes For Lead Ion Removal From Water, Mayur Indal Ukey

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Pollution by heavy metals, such as lead (Pb), in bodies of water is a serious problem today that poses great risk to human health and the environment. In this study, cellulose-acetate (CA) based membranes were synthesized by immersion precipitation process, and commercially available CA membranes were modified by a layering method. Phytic acid (PA), a phosphorus rich compound known for its chelating properties, was doped into the membrane films to improve their efficiency in removing Pb (II) ions from water. As formulation additives, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), amine-functionalized cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and chitosan were used. Mechanical properties, and filtration efficiency of …

Of Inclusion, Belonging, And Missed Connection In Higher Education, Tara Nelson Jan 2021

Of Inclusion, Belonging, And Missed Connection In Higher Education, Tara Nelson

Education

Inclusion research in higher education affords opportunities to measure how, and to what extent, institutions create academic environments that are equitably accessible. While inclusion encompasses many facets, underscored in literature is belonging - the “perceived social support on campus, a feeling or sensation of connectedness, and the experience of mattering or feeling cared about, accepted, respected, valued by, and important to the campus community” (Strayhorn, 2019, p. 4). Although academia has implemented a plethora of inclusivity practices and policies with hopes of generating belonging, highlighted is belonging is experienced inequitably across diverse populations (Duran et al., 2020; Fries-Britt et al., …

Mitigating Nonlinear Effect And Preserving Privacy For Memristor Based On-Chip Neural Network, Jingyan Fu Jan 2021

Mitigating Nonlinear Effect And Preserving Privacy For Memristor Based On-Chip Neural Network, Jingyan Fu

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Memristors offer advantages as a hardware solution for neuromorphic computing, however, their non-ideal property makes the weight update difficult and reduces the accuracy of a neural network. Also, a large amount of personal data has raised great concern about the privacy preservation of neural networks. Thus, the performance of memristor-based neural networks gets worse when considering non-ideal property and introducing a privacy preservation mechanism. This dissertation focuses on improving the performance of a memristor-based privacy-preserving neural network. A piecewise linear (PL) method is proposed to mitigate the nonlinear effect of memristors by calculating the weight update parameters along a piecewise …

Transformation Electromagnetics/Optics For Designing And Scanning Antenna Arrays, Dipankar Mitra Jan 2021

Transformation Electromagnetics/Optics For Designing And Scanning Antenna Arrays, Dipankar Mitra

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Recent developments in engineered electromagnetic materials, also known as metamaterials paved the way for new design approaches of unique and incomprehensible electromagnetic devices and structures using electromagnetic properties which are usually not available in nature. By taking advantage of Maxwell’s equation’s “form-invariance” under coordinate transformations, lately, a coordinate transformation-based approach was introduced to manipulate electromagnetic waves at will, which resulted in a non-homogeneous, anisotropic transformation media dictated by the coordinate transformation. This design approach is known as “transformation electromagnetics/optics (TE/TO)” and has steered many unconventional and seemingly-impossible unique electromagnetic devices such as, the electromagnetic invisibility cloak. The concepts of TE/TO …

Turning Visual Noise Into Hardware Efficiency: Systems Of Viewer And Content Aware Power-Quality Scalable Embedded Memories With Ecc-Adaptation For Big Videos And Deep Learning, Ali Ahmad Haidous Jan 2021

Turning Visual Noise Into Hardware Efficiency: Systems Of Viewer And Content Aware Power-Quality Scalable Embedded Memories With Ecc-Adaptation For Big Videos And Deep Learning, Ali Ahmad Haidous

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Mobile devices, such as smart phones, are being increasingly utilized for watching videos. Video processing requires frequent memory access that consume a significant amount of power due to large data size and intensive computational requirements. This limits battery life and frustrates users. Memory designers are focused on hardware-level power-optimization techniques without consideration of how hardware performance influences viewers' actual experience. The human visual system is limited in its ability to detect subtle degradations in image quality. For example, under conditions of high ambient illumination – such as outdoors in direct sunlight – the veiling luminance (i.e., glare) on the screen …
