Next, we characterize the density of compact supported smooth functions ($C_C^\infty$) in a Musielak Orlicz spaces $L^\Phi$ generated by a functions $\Phi$ that are not necessarily locally integrable.\ind …

Bayesian And Maximum Likelihood Estimation For Correlated Binary Data Based On The Double Binomial Distribution, John Appiah Kubi Jan 2021

Bayesian And Maximum Likelihood Estimation For Correlated Binary Data Based On The Double Binomial Distribution, John Appiah Kubi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In the statistical analysis of binary data, usually the binomial distribution is themost commonly used probability model in many applications. The binomial is a very usefuldistribution in many practical applications due to its simplicity and having a parameter thathas an intuitive meaning. However, it has a unique feature that is the variance depending onthe mean, an assumption that does not reflect reality in many practical applications especiallyin cases where the data exhibits greater variability than predicted by the distribution. Thetwo-parameter double binomial model introduced by Efron (1986) may be considered as auseful alternative to the one-parameter binomial distributions, given that …

Local Null-Controllability Of A Chemotactic Model For A Bacterial Infection In A Radially-Symmetric, Chronic Wound, Stephen Guffey Jan 2021

Local Null-Controllability Of A Chemotactic Model For A Bacterial Infection In A Radially-Symmetric, Chronic Wound, Stephen Guffey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this work, we introduce a differential equation model for a bacterial infection in a radially symmetric chronic wound. The goal of the current work is the following: show the model produces a unique solution in a suitable setting and then determine whether one can drive the system to the origin using controllers contained in a small subdomain of the wound. The model consists of three parabolic-like partial differential equations along with a single vector-valued ordinary differential equation. Of the critical features of the model, one of the most challenging is the nonlinear coupling describing chemotactic attraction between the neutrophils …

Efficient Computer Search For Multiple Recursive Generators, Kenneth Bobvah Pasiah Jan 2021

Efficient Computer Search For Multiple Recursive Generators, Kenneth Bobvah Pasiah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Pseudo-random numbers (PRNs) are the basis for almost any statistical simulation and thisdepends largely on the quality of the pseudo-random number generator(PRNG) used. In this study, we used some results from number theory to propose an efficient method to accelerate the computer search of super-order maximum period multiple recursive generators (MRGs). We conduct efficient computer searches and successfully found prime modulus p, and the associated order k; (k = 40751; k = 50551; k = 50873) such that R(k; p) is a prime. Using these values of ks, together with the generalized Mersenne prime algorithm, we found and listed many …

Development Of Robust And Dynamic Control Solutions For Energy Storage Enabled Hybrid Ac/Dc Microgrids, Morteza Daviran Keshavarzi Jan 2021

Development Of Robust And Dynamic Control Solutions For Energy Storage Enabled Hybrid Ac/Dc Microgrids, Morteza Daviran Keshavarzi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Hybrid microgrids (HMGs) that incorporate the functionalities of both AC and DC load/generation systems are gradually evolving from the concept stage to real-world practice. HMGs can reduce power losses due to decreased requirement of conversions from AC to DC and vice versa. HMGs, particularly in islanded operations, are prone to instability and power fluctuations due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources (RES) and the stochastic behavior of the loads. It is imperative to damp system oscillations with faster dynamics and reliable controllers. Converter-interfaced energy storage systems (ESS) are well demonstrated to be the most reliable, technically feasible, and …

Identifying Student, Institutional, And Economic Factors Associated With Increasing Tuition Revenue Through Tuition Discounting At Public Institutions, Bridgette Decent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Tuition discounting has long been an important component of revenue management at private institutions and has been steadily growing in prevalence in public institutions. The fundamental assumption of tuition discounting is that student enrollment behavior can be influenced by strategic optimization of student aid and tuition price. However, a literature review reveals the inherent tensions between relevant economic theories describing human behavior at the aggregate level, and student choice theories detailing the complex individual factors that combine to form a student enrollment decision. This three-part quantitative study evaluates trends in institutional tuition discount rates for first-time freshmen at public, four-year, …

On Nonlinear Acoustic Waves Of Third--Order (In Time) And Applications, Marcelo Adriano Dos Santos Bongarti Jan 2021

On Nonlinear Acoustic Waves Of Third--Order (In Time) And Applications, Marcelo Adriano Dos Santos Bongarti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The mathematical topic of the present thesis is a third-order (in time) semilinear Partial Differential Equation (PDE), generally referred to, in the context of acoustics, as the Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation. It arises in a variety of physical contexts such as in describing the behavior of viscoelastic materials and propagation of acoustic waves. The presence of the third-order time derivative is due to the use of the second-sound phenomenon as a model for heat propagation. This anticipates thermal waves traveling with finite velocity, to replace the classical thermal theory, which is based on diffusion and under which heat signals have an infinite …

According to the National Science Foundation (2017), women who represent ethnically or racially minoritized backgrounds accounted for only 11% of earned bachelors degrees in science and engineering. To better understand why racially minoritized women do not choose to pursue or fail to persist in STEM programs, one must delve into the intersectional barriers that create and contribute to these disincentives. Using a qualitative, field-based learning experience design following a multi-site case study approach, this study examined racially minoritized female STEM students' experiences within a virtual peer mentoring training program. The aim was to determine how, if at all, the training …

Taking Her At Her Work: Reconsidering The Legacy Of Alma Mahler, Rachel Elizabeth Scott Jan 2021

Taking Her At Her Work: Reconsidering The Legacy Of Alma Mahler, Rachel Elizabeth Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Alma Mahler (18791964) grew up surrounded by artists in late nineteenth-century Vienna. Despite her musical training, demonstrated passion for music, and publication of several Lieder, Mahlers identity as a composer has remained overshadowed by narratives surrounding her personal life and those of her husbands and lovers, not to mention the artistic work of her husbands and lovers. Increasingly, however, interest in Alma Mahler as a composer has been nurtured through creative engagement with that legacy, and frequently by women authors and artists. This dissertation explores the existing literature written by and related to Alma Mahler and identifies some approaches for …

Prompting Self-Explanations During The Learning Of Probability: Content-Specific Versus Generic Versus Generic With A Form Of Guidance, Genghu Shi Jan 2021

Prompting Self-Explanations During The Learning Of Probability: Content-Specific Versus Generic Versus Generic With A Form Of Guidance, Genghu Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Learners often cannot apply (transfer) the knowledge they learned from instructional settings into a new context. Therefore, their knowledge is likely inert. Research shows that learners must be actively involved in learning construction activities to enable knowledge transfer to occur. Self-explanation is one such constructive cognitive activity that involves explaining learning materials (expository texts, worked examples) to oneself with attempts to make sense of new information. It has been shown to support deep comprehension and knowledge transfer. However, self-explanations usually cannot be spontaneously generated by learners, but need to be elicited by prompts. The prompts can range from generic type …

Parametric And Non-Parametric Approaches To Factorial Data Analysis., Prabin Shrestha Jan 2021

Parametric And Non-Parametric Approaches To Factorial Data Analysis., Prabin Shrestha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Factorial design is one of the best ways to screen different factors in a system of study. It allows the study of the main effects and their interactions at the same time. We used the 2k-factorial design to screen different factors that affect the bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics. Through simulation studies, we examined the sensitivity and specificity of four different approaches to analyze the factorial data under different scenarios. The parametric ANOVA showed higher sensitivity and specificity for normally distributed data, but it failed largely for non-normal data. Rank-ANOVA had very high sensitivity and specificity for both normal and non-normal …

Prediction Of Equivalent Liquid Permeability From Gas Permeability Measurements: A Recurrent Neural Network Approach, Husam Alkinani, Abo Taleb Al-Hameedi, Shari Dunn-Norman

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the most vital reservoir properties is permeability. It is usually measured using core samples with two major measurement methods: using gas or using liquid. The purpose of this work is to use a data-driven recurrent neural network model to estimate the equivalent liquid permeability based on gas permeability. By using this model, the equivalent liquid permeability can be predicted for the permeability of core samples with rich clay minerals measured using gas (or any core sample that is measured using gas). This will give an alternative way to the currently used method (Klinkenberg method). Core sample data measurements …

Will Carbon Dioxide Injection In Shale Reservoirs Produce From The Shale Matrix, Natural Fractures, Or Hydraulic Fractures?, Sherif Fakher, Youssef Elgahawy, Hesham Abdelaal, Abdulmohsin Imqam

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in shale reservoirs has been recently shown to increase oil recovery significantly from this unconventional oil and gas source. One of the most studied EOR methods in shale reservoirs is gas injection, with a focus on carbon Dioxide (CO2) mainly due to the ability to both enhance oil recovery and store the CO2 in the formation. Even though several shale plays have reported an increase in oil recovery using CO2 injection, in some cases this method failed severely. This research attempts to investigate the ability of the CO2 to mobilize crude …

Polymer rheology can have either a positive or a negative effect on polymer flooding performance under varied circumstances. Many researchers have studied the effect of polymer rheology in a vertical well, but no field scale studies have been conducted to investigate whether polymer rheology is beneficial to polymer flooding in heavy oil reservoirs developed by horizontal wells. In this paper, we conducted a numerical simulation study to examine the effect of HPAM polymer rheology on a polymer flooding pilot, which is the first-ever project conducted on a heavy oil reservoir from Alaska North Slope (ANS) developed by horizontal wells. Three …

In this paper, first we have defined a uniform distribution on the boundary of a regular hexagon, and then investigated the optimal sets of n-means and the nth quantization errors for all positive integers n. We give an exact formula to determine them, if n is of the form n = 6k for some positive integer k. We further calculate the quantization dimension, the quantization coefficient, and show that the quantization dimension is equal to the dimension of the object, and the quantization coefficient exists as a finite positive number. Then, we define a mixture of two uniform distributions on …

One of the primary challenges facing scientists is extracting understanding from the large amounts of data produced by simulations, experiments, and observational facilities. The use of data across the entire lifetime ranging from real-time to post-hoc analysis is complex and varied, typically requiring a collaborative effort across multiple teams of scientists. Over time, three sets of tools have emerged: One set for analysis, another for visualization, and a final set for orchestrating the tasks. This trifurcated tool set often results in the manual assembly of analysis and visualization workflows, which are one-off solutions that are often fragile and difficult to …

Lanchester's Equations And Cyberwarfare, George Markowsky, Linda Markowsky

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In his classic book Aircraft in Warfare, F. W. Lanchester discussed different types of warfare and presented equations, called the Lanchester equations, that can be used to model the results of battles between two forces of different sizes or capabilities. This paper introduces the Lanchester equations and provides a theoretical discussion leading to an analysis of the relative value of increasing the effectiveness of military assets vs. increasing the quantity of those assets. In particular, we show that increasing the effectiveness contributes only linearly to the power of a combatant, but increasing the quantity contributes quadratically. This paper also presents …
