The Simulation Extrapolation Method With Differential Measurement Error, Dominic Partipilo Jan 2021

The Simulation Extrapolation Method With Differential Measurement Error, Dominic Partipilo

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Most of statistical theory operates under the assumption that the true values of covariates have been measured correctly, but it is not always possible to obtain the true values of these covariates. A common issue, specifically in regression models, is that predictors are misclassified or measured with systematic measurement error. There have been many methods developed for handling measurement error, specifically in the case where measurement error is nondifferential, where the measurement error can be treated as independent from the covariates. The frequentist method known as simulation extrapolation (SIMEX) is one of these methods that specifically handles the case for …

Optimization Of Dynamic Objective Functions Using Path Integrals, Paramahansa Pramanik Jan 2021

Optimization Of Dynamic Objective Functions Using Path Integrals, Paramahansa Pramanik

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Path integrals are used to find an optimal strategy for a firm under a Walrasian system. We define dynamic optimal strategies and develop an integration method to capture all non-additive non-convex strategies. We also show that the method can solve the non-linear case, for example Merton-Garman-Hamiltonian system, which the traditional Pontryagin maximum principle cannot solve in closed form. Furthermore, we assume that the strategy space and time are inseparable with respect to a contract. Under this assumption we show that the strategy spacetime is a dynamic curved Liouville-like 2-brane quantum gravity surface under asymmetric information and that traditional Euclidean geometry …

Superconducting Cuprates: Synthesis, Characterization And Diffuse Scattering Properties, Bisham Poudel Jan 2021

Superconducting Cuprates: Synthesis, Characterization And Diffuse Scattering Properties, Bisham Poudel

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Since its discovery more than a century ago, the fascinating phenomenon of superconductivity remains as mysterious as ever with the greatest challenge facing the condensed matter community being the elusive understanding of the microscopic origin leading to its inception. Many outstanding questions remain of which the role played by nematic fluctuations and structural disorder for the stabilization of superconductivity is not well understood. In this respect, superconducting YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO)-type cuprates present an ideal framework in which charge doping, structural disorder and various site manipulations can be explored in efforts to address some of these questions. Extensive synthesis and characterization efforts …

The Zorich Transform And Generalizing Koenigs Linearization Theorem To Quasiregular Maps, Jacob A. Pratscher Jan 2021

The Zorich Transform And Generalizing Koenigs Linearization Theorem To Quasiregular Maps, Jacob A. Pratscher

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the role that a new tool called the Zorich transform plays in quasiregular dynamics as a generalization of the logarithmic transform in complex dynamics. In particular we use the Zorich transform to construct analogues of the logarithmic spiral maps and interpolation between radial stretch maps. These constructions are then used to completely classify the orbit space of a quasiregular map. Also, conditions are given in which a quasiregular map $f:D\to\R^n$, where $D\subset\R^n$ is a domain, that is quasiconformal in a neighborhood of a geometrically attracting fixed point can be conjugated by a quasiconformal map to the asymptotic …

Developing A Standard Platform To Predict The Drag Coefficient Of Irregular Shape Particles, Amin Roostaeehosseinabadi Jan 2021

Developing A Standard Platform To Predict The Drag Coefficient Of Irregular Shape Particles, Amin Roostaeehosseinabadi

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Solid-fluid interactions are commonly observed in natural transport phenomena and industrial applications such as sedimentation in rivers and pneumatic and hydraulic conveying of coarse particles. Here particle and fluid motion affect each other through force interactions, especially via drag force. To evaluate the magnitude of the drag force first the drag coefficient (CD) of the particle needs to be measured mostly experimentally. The CD depends on the particle’s geometry (i.e., shape, dimension, …) and the properties of the fluid medium. Since the solid particles commonly observed in nature or used in industrial setups come with irregular shapes, finding a relation …

Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland Jan 2021

Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland

Masters Theses

This thesis concerns the study of the Cheeger constant of two related hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. The first surface R is formed by taking the quotient U2/Γ(4), where U2 is the upper half-plane model of the hyperbolic plane and Γ(4) is a congruence subgroup of PSL2(Z), an isometry group of U2 . This quotient is shown to form a Riemann surface which is constructed by gluing sides of a fundamental domain for Γ(4) together according to certain specified side pairings. To form the related Riemann surface R' , we follow a similar procedure, this time taking the …

Determining Material Structures And Surface Chemistry By Genetic Algorithms And Quantum Chemical Simulations, Josiah Jesse Roberts Jan 2021

Determining Material Structures And Surface Chemistry By Genetic Algorithms And Quantum Chemical Simulations, Josiah Jesse Roberts

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

With the advent of modern computing, the use of simulation in chemistry has become just as important as experiment. Simulations were originally only applicable to small molecules, but modern techniques, such as density functional theory (DFT) allow extension to materials science. While there are many valuable techniques for synthesis and characterization in chemistry laboratories, there are far more materials possible than can be synthesized, each with an entire host of surfaces. This wealth of chemical space to explore begs the use of computational chemistry to mimic synthesis and experimental characterization. In this work, genetic algorithms (GA), for the former, and …

Spectral Analysis Of Cyclotron Radiation For Electron Beam Diagnostics, Brendan Leung

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The spectral distribution of the cyclotron radiation emitted by non-ultra-relativistic electrons traveling through solenoidal lenses can be used to characterize ensemble-averaged properties of a beam. In this paper we explore the potential use of cyclotron radiation to measure the energy spread and transverse emittance of a beam while remaining unintrusive. We specifically discuss the relation between the spectral properties of cyclotron radiation and the beam statistical properties and perform first principle particle-in-cell simulation to validate our findings.

Clinical Applications And Feasibility Of Proton Ct And Proton Radiography, Christina Marie Sarosiek Jan 2021

Clinical Applications And Feasibility Of Proton Ct And Proton Radiography, Christina Marie Sarosiek

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Proton therapy is a form of radiation treatment for cancer that utilizes the Bragg peak to create conformal high dose regions around the tumor volume. However, the use of x-ray computed tomography (CT) and x-ray radiography for treatment planning and pre-treatment quality assurance procedures improves the achievable effectiveness of proton treatment plans (using proton CT) and the pretreatment verification (using proton radiography). Errors in the conversion from x-ray Hounsfield units (HU) to proton relative stopping powers (RSP) leads to errors in the predicted proton range. To account for the errors, 3.5% margins are included in the treatment plan. This means …

Investigation Of A Possible Cretaceous-Paleogene Boundary Layer In The Hell Creek Formation Near Ekalaka, Montana, U.S.A., Joshua Marvin Schwartz

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The Hell Creek Formation is known for its abundant vertebrate fossils from the end of the Cretaceous. Its internal stratigraphy is poorly defined and it is therefore difficult to determine the precise stratigraphic location of a paleontological feature. This challenge could be overcome if a consistently appearing easily recognizable time horizon, such as the Chicxulub impact debris, or a well defined formational contact could be identified over a wide area of the Hell Creek Formation exposure, but these have been difficult to establish in some localities. The Carthage Institute of Paleontology (CIP) has collected Hell Creek specimens near Ekalaka, Montana …
