Assessing Faculty Perceptions Of A Guided Pathways Model, Lesley Lynn Zimmerman-Cooper Jan 2021

Assessing Faculty Perceptions Of A Guided Pathways Model, Lesley Lynn Zimmerman-Cooper

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Since the inception of the guided pathways model in 2015, most related research has focused on the interconnecting processes and practices that lead to student persistence and completion. While the processes and practices are the basis of the model, scholars acknowledge that the model's human capital and change management components are just as significant. An institution must have a majority of its faculty and staff engaged in and excited about shifting to guided pathways for the model to succeed and be sustainable. Buy-in across the institution, but especially from faculty, is essential to the model's overall effectiveness. This qualitative case study, …

Tensor Network Approach For Simulation Of Quantum Many-Body Systems, Danylo Lykov Jan 2021

Tensor Network Approach For Simulation Of Quantum Many-Body Systems, Danylo Lykov

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The simulation of quantum many-body systems and many-body statistical systems presents a challenge for classical computers. Quantum computation, which recently gained significant scientific interest, can provide a potential advantage over classical approaches in this area. While there are multiple methods for the simulation of the physics of many-body quantum systems, most of them scale exponentially with the number of elements. A Tensor Network approach allows to reduce this exponential scaling for some cases and reduces the pre-factor for others. This approach can be used for the simulation of classical statistical physics models, quantum many-body systems, and quantum computers in particular. …

The Simulation Extrapolation Method With Differential Measurement Error, Dominic Partipilo Jan 2021

The Simulation Extrapolation Method With Differential Measurement Error, Dominic Partipilo

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Most of statistical theory operates under the assumption that the true values of covariates have been measured correctly, but it is not always possible to obtain the true values of these covariates. A common issue, specifically in regression models, is that predictors are misclassified or measured with systematic measurement error. There have been many methods developed for handling measurement error, specifically in the case where measurement error is nondifferential, where the measurement error can be treated as independent from the covariates. The frequentist method known as simulation extrapolation (SIMEX) is one of these methods that specifically handles the case for …

Optimization Of Dynamic Objective Functions Using Path Integrals, Paramahansa Pramanik Jan 2021

Optimization Of Dynamic Objective Functions Using Path Integrals, Paramahansa Pramanik

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Path integrals are used to find an optimal strategy for a firm under a Walrasian system. We define dynamic optimal strategies and develop an integration method to capture all non-additive non-convex strategies. We also show that the method can solve the non-linear case, for example Merton-Garman-Hamiltonian system, which the traditional Pontryagin maximum principle cannot solve in closed form. Furthermore, we assume that the strategy space and time are inseparable with respect to a contract. Under this assumption we show that the strategy spacetime is a dynamic curved Liouville-like 2-brane quantum gravity surface under asymmetric information and that traditional Euclidean geometry …

The Zorich Transform And Generalizing Koenigs Linearization Theorem To Quasiregular Maps, Jacob A. Pratscher

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the role that a new tool called the Zorich transform plays in quasiregular dynamics as a generalization of the logarithmic transform in complex dynamics. In particular we use the Zorich transform to construct analogues of the logarithmic spiral maps and interpolation between radial stretch maps. These constructions are then used to completely classify the orbit space of a quasiregular map. Also, conditions are given in which a quasiregular map $f:D\to\R^n$, where $D\subset\R^n$ is a domain, that is quasiconformal in a neighborhood of a geometrically attracting fixed point can be conjugated by a quasiconformal map to the asymptotic …

Developing A Standard Platform To Predict The Drag Coefficient Of Irregular Shape Particles, Amin Roostaeehosseinabadi Jan 2021

Developing A Standard Platform To Predict The Drag Coefficient Of Irregular Shape Particles, Amin Roostaeehosseinabadi

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Solid-fluid interactions are commonly observed in natural transport phenomena and industrial applications such as sedimentation in rivers and pneumatic and hydraulic conveying of coarse particles. Here particle and fluid motion affect each other through force interactions, especially via drag force. To evaluate the magnitude of the drag force first the drag coefficient (CD) of the particle needs to be measured mostly experimentally. The CD depends on the particle’s geometry (i.e., shape, dimension, …) and the properties of the fluid medium. Since the solid particles commonly observed in nature or used in industrial setups come with irregular shapes, finding a relation …

Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland Jan 2021

Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland

Masters Theses

This thesis concerns the study of the Cheeger constant of two related hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. The first surface R is formed by taking the quotient U2/Γ(4), where U2 is the upper half-plane model of the hyperbolic plane and Γ(4) is a congruence subgroup of PSL2(Z), an isometry group of U2 . This quotient is shown to form a Riemann surface which is constructed by gluing sides of a fundamental domain for Γ(4) together according to certain specified side pairings. To form the related Riemann surface R' , we follow a similar procedure, this time taking the …

Determining Material Structures And Surface Chemistry By Genetic Algorithms And Quantum Chemical Simulations, Josiah Jesse Roberts

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

With the advent of modern computing, the use of simulation in chemistry has become just as important as experiment. Simulations were originally only applicable to small molecules, but modern techniques, such as density functional theory (DFT) allow extension to materials science. While there are many valuable techniques for synthesis and characterization in chemistry laboratories, there are far more materials possible than can be synthesized, each with an entire host of surfaces. This wealth of chemical space to explore begs the use of computational chemistry to mimic synthesis and experimental characterization. In this work, genetic algorithms (GA), for the former, and …
