A high voltage metal oxide arrester (MOA) is used to protect power system against overvoltages. The electric field surrounding the MOA can be made uniform by installing a grading ring. It is important to have a proper way to design a grading ring with low electric field of the design. In this project, a model of 150 kV MOA was developed in COMSOL Multiphysics software. The grading ring dimensions were varied to study their effects on the electric field surrounding MOA. It was found that the grading ring dimensions strongly influence the electric field magnitude surrounding the arrester. Gravitational search …

Enhancing The Seed Germination Process Of Montezuma Cypress (Taxodium Mucronatum Ten.), Alejandro Fierro-Cabo, August Plamann
School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Montezuma cypress (Taxodium. mucronatum) is an ecological, cultural and economically valuable riparian tree species. Two experiments evaluating the effectiveness of various seed treatments were conducted to identify germination best practices and to evaluate the dynamics of the germination process. Seeds were collected on two occasions, one year apart, from the only remaining natural T. mucronatum tree stand in the United States. The seeds were subjected to various soaking and stratification conditions. Across all treatments, germinability ranged between approximately 30%-40%, with slightly higher values occurring among the second seed cohort. Overall, no significant differences in germinability were detected in either …

New Amphibian And Reptile Distribution Records From Eastern South Dakota, Usa, Drew R. Davis
School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Over recent years, the continued collection of voucher specimens has helped to better document the distributions of South Dakota’s amphibians and reptiles. Despite large increases in our knowledge of these distributions, it remains clear that gaps in our understanding remain. Here, I report 17 new county records of six species of amphibians and reptiles from eastern South Dakota (east of the Missouri River) that are the result of fieldwork conducted in September 2020. The majority of these records are from the northern portions of the James River Lowland, Missouri Coteau, and Drift Plains ecoregions (Bryce et al. 1998), which are …

Coastal restoration projects to mitigate environmental impacts have increased global demand for sand resources. Unfortunately, these resources are often extracted from sand/shell banks on the inner continental shelf, resulting in significant alteration or loss of low-relief reefs in coastal oceans. Experimental reefs (oyster shell, limestone rubble, composite) were deployed in the western Gulf of Mexico to assess their potential value as nurseries for newly settled reef fishes. Occurrence, abundance, and species richness of juvenile fishes were significantly higher on all three types of low-relief reefs compared with unconsolidated sediment. Moreover, reefs served as nursery habitat for a range of reef …
Christianity And Antitrust, Kenneth G. Elzinga, Daniel Crane
Christianity And Antitrust, Kenneth G. Elzinga, Daniel Crane
Book Chapters
The purpose of this chapter is to consider whether the Christian faith has a nexus with the institution of antitrust. It turns out it doesn’t – and it does. For example, Christianity cannot explain why the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index is superior to the four-firm concentration ratio as a measure of industry concentration. Economics can. On the other hand, economics cannot explain why the per se rule against price-fixing is morally appropriate. The Bible can.
Looking For Hope: The Experience Of Early Career Teachers Engaged In A Collaborative Community Of Reflective Practice As A Model Of Induction And Professional Development, Donia E. Spott
Theses and Dissertations
Teaching has always been an isolated profession and many professional development programs are seen as disconnected from the realities and daily needs of teaching. With the pressures of standards, paperwork, classroom management, and learning to teach, early career teachers can be especially vulnerable to becoming discouraged, disillusioned, and demoralized. This study used a qualitative, narrative inquiry approach to tell the stories of seven early career teachers’ experiences with induction and the development of a reflective community to support early career teachers in their professional practice. As part of the action research approach taken in designing the program, the discussions and …
Strategies For Resolution Enhancement In Liquid Chromatography, Shelby Lynn Weatherbee
Strategies For Resolution Enhancement In Liquid Chromatography, Shelby Lynn Weatherbee
Theses and Dissertations
Recent research in liquid chromatography (LC) has led to the development of new methodologies to further improve sample analysis. Non-uniform stationary phases are one such area that focuses on developments in selectivity and efficiency of stationary phases. Within this subset of stationary phases are two major focuses: two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) and continuous stationary phase gradients that are the basis of this work.
In this work, LC simulation software was adapted to simulate chromatograms based on experimental and modeled injection profiles. This was done by measuring the injection profiles from a 2D-LC active solvent modulation valve using a variety of …
Continual Learning For Multi-Label Drifting Data Streams Using Homogeneous Ensemble Of Self-Adjusting Nearest Neighbors, Gavin Alberghini
Continual Learning For Multi-Label Drifting Data Streams Using Homogeneous Ensemble Of Self-Adjusting Nearest Neighbors, Gavin Alberghini
Theses and Dissertations
Multi-label data streams are sequences of multi-label instances arriving over time to a multi-label classifier. The properties of the data stream may continuously change due to concept drift. Therefore, algorithms must adapt constantly to the new data distributions. In this paper we propose a novel ensemble method for multi-label drifting streams named Homogeneous Ensemble of Self-Adjusting Nearest Neighbors (HESAkNN). It leverages a self-adjusting kNN as a base classifier with the advantages of ensembles to adapt to concept drift in the multi-label environment. To promote diverse knowledge within the ensemble, each base classifier is given a unique subset of features and …

Nanopore Detection Of Long Time-Scale Single Metallic Cluster Conformational Changes And Surface Ligand Exchange, Bobby D. Cox
Nanopore Detection Of Long Time-Scale Single Metallic Cluster Conformational Changes And Surface Ligand Exchange, Bobby D. Cox
Theses and Dissertations
Single molecule nanopore spectroscopy serves as an emerging tool for studying small molecules in aqueous environments without the need for additional chemical labels. Recently it has been seeing increased use as a tool for investigating small metallic nanoparticles and clusters. These clusters consist of a handful of metallic atoms (e.g. Au18) and are regularly ‘passivated’ with organic ligands to provide functionality and protect against aggregation. There has been a widening gap in research studying the surface kinetics of these passivating ligands at the single molecule level as well as during the exchange process. In this work we investigated these surface …
Methods For Developing A Machine Learning Framework For Precise 3d Domain Boundary Prediction At Base-Level Resolution, Spiro C. Stilianoudakis
Methods For Developing A Machine Learning Framework For Precise 3d Domain Boundary Prediction At Base-Level Resolution, Spiro C. Stilianoudakis
Theses and Dissertations
High-throughput chromosome conformation capture technology (Hi-C) has revealed extensive DNA looping and folding into discrete 3D domains. These include Topologically Associating Domains (TADs) and chromatin loops, the 3D domains critical for cellular processes like gene regulation and cell differentiation. The relatively low resolution of Hi-C data (regions of several kilobases in size) prevents precise mapping of domain boundaries by conventional TAD/loop-callers. However, high resolution genomic annotations associated with boundaries, such as CTCF and members of cohesin complex, suggest a computational approach for precise location of domain boundaries.
We developed preciseTAD, an optimized machine learning framework that leverages a random …
Single-Molecule Investigation Of I-Motif Folding And Dynamics In Bioinspired Dna Platforms, Anoja Megalathan
Single-Molecule Investigation Of I-Motif Folding And Dynamics In Bioinspired Dna Platforms, Anoja Megalathan
Theses and Dissertations
Although the canonical right-handed B-DNA is the predominant form of DNA in cells, DNA can adopt other secondary structures such as hairpins, G-quadruplexes (G4), and intercalated motifs (i-motif). These secondary structures are typically formed in the regions with repeat sequences. Among many secondary structures DNA can adopt, G-quadruplexes and i-motifs (tetraplex structures formed in the G-rich and C-rich sequences, respectively) caught significant research interest in recent years due to the prevalence of G-rich and C-rich sequences in the human genome. While G-quadruplexes are extensively studied, little is known about i-motifs – especially their formation and stability under cellular environments. For …

Multiplexed Nucleic Acid Sensing With Single Molecule Fret, Anisa Kaur
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, biomarkers have drawn tremendous interest in the fields of clinical diagnostics and biotechnology. In fact, recent quests for biomarker analyses have discovered a myriad of disease-related biomarkers spanning a wide variety of biomolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, and small molecule ligands. While the detection of only one target at a time is the most common practice in biosensing today, it has been shown that the accuracy of diagnosis increases significantly by measuring the level of multiple biomarkers instead of just one due to the possible overlap of certain biomarkers in more than one disease. However, currently …
Grief, Loss, And Climate Change: Validation Of A Solastalgia Scale, Claire Luce
Grief, Loss, And Climate Change: Validation Of A Solastalgia Scale, Claire Luce
Theses and Dissertations
Climate change has been identified as a defining issue of this century (United Nations, n.d.). Climate change impacts human wellbeing including mental health. While much research has focused on the way that the effects of climate change cause increases in common mental disorders, mental health is not just the absence of these disorders (World Health Organization, 2014). Non-pathologized mental health responses to climate change, such as the grief and loss that results from climate change impacts, are a growing consideration for researchers. Solastalgia, or the distress experienced in the absence of the solace once provided by the environment in the …

While undergraduates develop an understanding of the impact theatre can have on an individual …
Modeling Vegetation Effects On Barrier Island Evolution, Eric W. Schoen
Modeling Vegetation Effects On Barrier Island Evolution, Eric W. Schoen
Theses and Dissertations
Barrier islands play a significant role in protecting coastlines and harboring coastal habitats. In an effort to study and better understand the evolution of barrier island systems, a cellular model capturing various meteorological and environmental processes is proposed. Erosion due to wind, gravity, and marine processes are coupled with plant population effects. We demonstrate the inhibition of plant cover on sediment mobility, island migration, and erosion in the presence of sea level rise.
Cloaca Palace, Connor Marie Stankard
Cloaca Palace, Connor Marie Stankard
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I trace the compulsive fear of holes, known as trypophobia, from an uncontrollable obsession to a pleasurable preoccupation. The body’s physical porousness makes us receptive to our surroundings, allowing external matter in and destabilizing the boundaries of self and other. Matter invades us, encoding itself into our DNA and transforming humans into chimeric creatures.
Through paintings and multi-media installations, I encourage viewers to reflect on their own bodies as a series of holes, vulnerable receptors to the world. I use the figure of a woman to personify a human hole which has been infected by the outside, …
Governance ≠ Leadership: What Blockchain And Ai Won't Do For Corporate Lawyers, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw
Governance ≠ Leadership: What Blockchain And Ai Won't Do For Corporate Lawyers, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
This is a contribution to the Journal of Corporation Law’s 2020 symposium on blockchain technology and corporate governance. The thesis is that blockchain technology is well suited to the monitoring function in corporate governance; that monitoring as the primary function of corporate governance is a particularly legal conception; and that the business conception of governance has far more to do with leadership, strategy, and operations. If the legal and business conceptions of governance tend to be ships passing in the night (at least in this somewhat exaggerated rendering), it is because prevailing economic and legal theoretical models have a difficult …

The imposition and lifting of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to avert the COVID19 pandemic have gained popularity worldwide and will continue to be enforced until herd immunity is achieved. We developed a linear regression model to ascertain the nexus between the time-varying reproduction number averaged over a time window of six days (Rts) and seven NPIs: contact tracing, quarantine efforts, social distancing and health checks, hand hygiene, wearing of facemasks, lockdown and isolation, and health-related supports. Our analysis suggests that the second wave that emerged in Sri Lanka in early October 2020 continued despite numerous NPIs. The model indicates that the …

Prediction Of Equivalent Liquid Permeability From Gas Permeability Measurements: A Recurrent Neural Network Approach, Husam Alkinani, Abo Taleb Al-Hameedi, Shari Dunn-Norman
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
One of the most vital reservoir properties is permeability. It is usually measured using core samples with two major measurement methods: using gas or using liquid. The purpose of this work is to use a data-driven recurrent neural network model to estimate the equivalent liquid permeability based on gas permeability. By using this model, the equivalent liquid permeability can be predicted for the permeability of core samples with rich clay minerals measured using gas (or any core sample that is measured using gas). This will give an alternative way to the currently used method (Klinkenberg method). Core sample data measurements …

Will Carbon Dioxide Injection In Shale Reservoirs Produce From The Shale Matrix, Natural Fractures, Or Hydraulic Fractures?, Sherif Fakher, Youssef Elgahawy, Hesham Abdelaal, Abdulmohsin Imqam
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in shale reservoirs has been recently shown to increase oil recovery significantly from this unconventional oil and gas source. One of the most studied EOR methods in shale reservoirs is gas injection, with a focus on carbon Dioxide (CO2) mainly due to the ability to both enhance oil recovery and store the CO2 in the formation. Even though several shale plays have reported an increase in oil recovery using CO2 injection, in some cases this method failed severely. This research attempts to investigate the ability of the CO2 to mobilize crude …

It Is Not Just About Birds: What Do Acoustic Indices Reveal About A Costa Rican Tropical Rainforest?, Mónica Retamosa Izaguirre, Jimy Barrantes-Madrigal, David Segura Sequeira, Manuel Spínola-Parallada, Oscar Ramírez-Alán
Neotropical Biodiversity
Acoustic monitoring is used to assess biodiversity across large spatial and temporal scales. However, extracting meaningful information from large data sets might be exceedingly time consuming. For this reason, acoustic indices have been proposed as proxies for biodiversity monitoring. Although acoustic indices hold great promise for standardizing acoustic data analysis, the complexity of acoustic conditions requires careful examination of the relationship between an index and the underlying process of interest. We evaluated 11 acoustic indices at two operational levels: (1) acoustic community level (an aggregation of species that produces sound), using birds as an example to assess how well acoustic …

Distributing Attorney Fees In Multidistrict Litigation, Edward K. Cheng, Paul H. Edelman, Brian T. Fitzpatrick
Distributing Attorney Fees In Multidistrict Litigation, Edward K. Cheng, Paul H. Edelman, Brian T. Fitzpatrick
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
As consolidated multidistrict litigation has come to dominate the federal civil docket, the problem of how to divide attorney fees among participating firms has become the source of frequent and protracted litigation. For example, in the National Football League (NFL) Concussion Litigation, the judge awarded the plaintiff attorneys over $100 million in fees, but the division of those fees among the twenty-six firms involved sparked two additional years of litigation. We explore solutions to this fee division problem, drawing insights from the economics, game theory, and industrial organization literatures. Ultimately, we propose a novel division method based on peer reports. …

Antitrust's High-Tech Exceptionalism, Rebecca H. Allensworth
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
American competition policy has four big problems: Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. These companies each reign over a sector of the digital marketplace, controlling both the consumer experience and the possibility of competitive entry. This Essay argues that the conventional account of how antitrust law allowed this consolidation of market power - that it failed to evolve to address the market realities of the technology sector-is incomplete. Not only did courts fail to adapt antitrust law from its smoke-stack roots, but they gave big tech special dispensation under traditional antitrust doctrine. Swayed by prevailing utopic views about digital markets in …

Lessons Learned In Designing Active Learning Modules For The Stem Classroom, Anna M. Christianson
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
For students to become real partners in their education, they must shift from a model of passive absorption of knowledge to one of active participation in constructing knowledge. To encourage this shift, I have designed a variety of active learning modules for my introductory chemistry classes, from short participation polls to full-length case studies. When well-implemented, in-class activities can be a valuable experience for students to practice applying their knowledge with instructor guidance. In this report, I will share both successes and challenges encountered in designing student-friendly active learning modules in an introductory science course.
