Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A graph G is weighted-k-list-antimagic if for any vertex weighting →: V (G) → R and any list assignment L: E(G) → 2R with jL(e)j ≤ jE(G)j + k there exists an edge labeling f such that f(e) 2 L(e) for all e 2 E(G), labels of edges are pairwise distinct, and the sum of the labels on edges incident to a vertex plus the weight of that vertex is distinct from the sum at every other vertex. In this paper we prove that every graph on n vertices having no K1 or K2 component is weighted-4n 3 -list-antimagic.

The Integer-Antimagic Spectra Of Hamiltonian Graphs, Ugur Odabasi, Dan Roberts, Richard M. Low Jan 2021

The Integer-Antimagic Spectra Of Hamiltonian Graphs, Ugur Odabasi, Dan Roberts, Richard M. Low

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Let A be a nontrivial abelian group. A connected simple graph G = (V, E) is A-antimagic, if there exists an edge labeling f: E(G) → A\{0A} such that the induced vertex labeling f+(v) = Σ{u,v} ∈ E(G) f({u,v}) is a one-to-one map. The integer-antimagic spectrum of a graph G is the set IAM(G) = {k: G is Zk-antimagic and k ≥ 2}. In this paper, we determine the integer-antimagic spectra for all Hamiltonian graphs.

Bayesspsurv: An R Package To Estimate Bayesian (Spatial) Split-Population Survival Models, Brandon Bolte, Nicolás Schmidt, Sergio Béjar, Nguyen Huynh, Bumba Mukherjee Jan 2021

Bayesspsurv: An R Package To Estimate Bayesian (Spatial) Split-Population Survival Models, Brandon Bolte, Nicolás Schmidt, Sergio Béjar, Nguyen Huynh, Bumba Mukherjee

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Survival data often include a fraction of units that are susceptible to an event of interest as well as a fraction of “immune” units. In many applications, spatial clustering in unobserved risk factors across nearby units can also affect their survival rates and odds of becoming immune. To address these methodological challenges, this article introduces our BayesSPsurv R-package, which fits parametric Bayesian Spatial split-population survival (cure) models that can account for spatial autocorrelation in both subpopulations of the user 's time-to-event data. Spatial autocorrelation is modeled with spatially weighted frailties, which are estimated using a conditionally autoregressive prior. The user …

A Quantcrit Analysis Of Context, Discipline, Special Education, And Disproportionality, Rebecca A. Cruz, Saili S. Kulkarni, Allison R. Firestone Jan 2021

A Quantcrit Analysis Of Context, Discipline, Special Education, And Disproportionality, Rebecca A. Cruz, Saili S. Kulkarni, Allison R. Firestone

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Using a dis/ability critical race theory (DisCrit) and critical quantitative (QuantCrit) lens, we examine disproportionate application of exclusionary discipline on multiply marginalized youth, foregrounding systemic injustice and institutionalized racism. In doing so, we examined temporal-, student-, and school-level factors that may result in exclusion and othering (i.e., placing into special education and punishing with out-of-school suspensions) within one school district. We frame this study in DisCrit and QuantCrit frameworks to connect data-based decision making to sociocultural understandings of the ways in which schools use both special education and discipline to simultaneously provide and limit opportunities for different student groups. Results …

Estimating Primary Forest Attributes And Rare Community Characteristics Using Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas): An Enrichment Of Conventional Forest Inventories, Benjamin T. Fraser, Russell G. Congalton Jan 2021

Estimating Primary Forest Attributes And Rare Community Characteristics Using Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas): An Enrichment Of Conventional Forest Inventories, Benjamin T. Fraser, Russell G. Congalton

Faculty Publications

The techniques for conducting forest inventories have been established over centuries of land management and conservation. In recent decades, however, compelling new tools and methodologies in remote sensing, computer vision, and data science have offered innovative pathways for enhancing the effectiveness and comprehension of these sampling designs. Now with the aid of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and advanced image processing techniques, we have never been closer to mapping forests at field-based inventory scales. Our research, conducted in New Hampshire on complex mixed-species forests, used natural color UAS imagery for estimating individual tree diameters (diameter at breast height (dbh)) as well …

Typology Emerges From Simplicity In Representations And Learning, Dakotah Lambert, Jonathan Rawski, Jeffrey Heinz Jan 2021

Typology Emerges From Simplicity In Representations And Learning, Dakotah Lambert, Jonathan Rawski, Jeffrey Heinz

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We derive well-understood and well-studied subregular classes of formal languages purely from the computational perspective of algorithmic learning problems. We parameterise the learning problem along dimensions of representation and inference strategy. Of special interest are those classes of languages whose learning algorithms are necessarily not prohibitively expensive in space and time, since learners are often exposed to adverse conditions and sparse data. Learned natural language patterns are expected to be most like the patterns in these classes, an expectation supported by previous typological and linguistic research in phonology. A second result is that the learning algorithms presented here are completely …

A Codex Of N-And P-Positions In Harary’S ‘Caterpillar Game’, Richard M. Low, Ardak Kapbasov, Arman Kapbasov, Stephen C. Locke, W. H. Chan

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Frank Harary proposed the following game: Given a caterpillar C, two players take turns removing edges of a path. The player who takes the last edge wins the game. In this paper, we completely characterize the N-and P-positions for all caterpillars with spine length zero, one, two and three. Furthermore, we analyze approximately 94% of the caterpillars with spine length greater than or equal to four. In those cases, they all turn out to be N-positions.

An Algorithm To Compute Cvts For Finitely Generated Cantor Distributions, Carl P. Dettmann, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Jan 2021

An Algorithm To Compute Cvts For Finitely Generated Cantor Distributions, Carl P. Dettmann, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Centroidal Voronoi tessellations (CVTs) are Voronoi tessellations of a region such that the generating points of the tessellations are also the centroids of the corresponding Voronoi regions with respect to a given probability measure. CVT is a fundamental notion that has a wide spectrum of applications in computational science and engineering. In this paper, an algorithm is given to obtain the CVTs with n-generators to level m, for any positive integers m and n, of any Cantor set generated by a pair of self-similar mappings given by S1(x)=r1x and S2(x)=r2x+(1−r2) for x∈R, where r1,r2>0 and r1+r20 and p1+p2=1.

The Thiol-Ene Encapsulation And Photo-Physical Characterization Of Colloidal Silicon Nanocrystals Synthesized With Si6h12 Using Non-Thermal Plasma Reactor, Mahmud Ayad Sefannaser Jan 2021

The Thiol-Ene Encapsulation And Photo-Physical Characterization Of Colloidal Silicon Nanocrystals Synthesized With Si6h12 Using Non-Thermal Plasma Reactor, Mahmud Ayad Sefannaser

Physics

Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) are nanometer-sized semiconducting materials. Their small size endows them with unique photophysical properties. Efficient photoluminescence (PL) from silicon nanocrystal (SiNC) composites has important implications for emerging solar-energy collection technologies, yet a detailed understanding of PL relaxation in non-colloidal SiNCs is still materializing. In this dissertation, we examine the photophysical properties of silicon nanocrystal/off-stoichiometry thiol-ene composites (SiNCs/OSTE hybrids). The dissertation begins with an introduction to the photophysical properties of SiNCs, their photophysical properties, how SiNC/polymer composites are made, the various SiNC preparation techniques, and the most likely application areas for these nanocrystals. A description of experimental methods such …

Biophysical Characterization Of Living Cells And Membrane Receptors By Atomic Force Spectroscopy, Lina Alhalhooly Jan 2021

Biophysical Characterization Of Living Cells And Membrane Receptors By Atomic Force Spectroscopy, Lina Alhalhooly

Physics

Cellular biomechanics and cellular communication via receptor-ligand interactions play an important role in controlling cell development and maintaining cellular functions. Atomic force spectroscopy (AFM) technique has been widely used to characterize the changes in cellular biomechanics and quantify the receptor-ligand interactions. In this dissertation, we introduce working principles of AFM-based force spectroscopy, visualize cross-communications between membrane mechanics and cellular signaling, and identify quantitative relationship between receptor-ligand binding dynamics and multivalent interactions. First, by exploiting force spectroscopy methods, we probed biomechanical kinetics (stiffness, morphology, roughness, adhesion) of the brain, breast, prostate, and pancreatic cancer cells with standard chemotherapeutic drugs in normoxia …

Fundamental Studies Of Interfacial Forces Acting On Thin Films, Timothy John Twohig Jan 2021

Fundamental Studies Of Interfacial Forces Acting On Thin Films, Timothy John Twohig

Physics

A thin film is a material that is many orders of magnitude thinner than it is long or wide. They are commonly found in many forms and have been adapted to a wide variety of uses. The art of origami uses thin films(sheets of paper) and precise folding to create complex, three-dimensional shapes out of flat, quasi two-dimensional sheets, and has emerged as a unique way to solve problems in engineering and science. As technology and devices are scaled to smaller sizes new understanding of origami methods are required to work at these small scales. The interactions between thin films …

Soil Moisture Prediction Using Meteorological Data, Satellite Imagery, And Machine Learning In The Red River Valley Of The North, Umesh Acharya Jan 2021

Soil Moisture Prediction Using Meteorological Data, Satellite Imagery, And Machine Learning In The Red River Valley Of The North, Umesh Acharya

Soil Science

Weather stations provide key information related to soil moisture and have been used by farmers to decide various field operations. We first evaluated the discrepancies in soil moisture between a weather stations and nearby field; due to soil texture, crop residue cover, crop type, growth stage and duration of temporal dependency to recent rainfall and evaporation rates using regression analysis. The regression analysis showed strong relationship between soil moisture at the weather station and the nearby field at the late vegetative and early reproductive stages. The correlation thereafter declines at later growth stages for corn and wheat. We can adduce …

A Spectral Two Sample Test, Yangshuang Xu Jan 2021

A Spectral Two Sample Test, Yangshuang Xu

Statistics

In statistics, two-sample tests are commonly desired under many topics. It's crucial to differentiate populations as a prerequisite for developing further analysis. A number of statistical tests have been developed for this hypothesis testing problem. In this thesis, we propose a novel method to perform two-sample test. Specifically, we use the two samples to form a matrix and adopt the largest eigen-value as the test statistic. This test statistic followed the tracy-widom law as the limiting distribution under the null hypothesis. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method by extensive simulation study and real data application. The type I …

A Comparative Multiple Simulation Study For Parametric And Nonparametric Methods In The Identification Of Differentially Expressed Genes, Daniel Grant Palmer Jan 2021

A Comparative Multiple Simulation Study For Parametric And Nonparametric Methods In The Identification Of Differentially Expressed Genes, Daniel Grant Palmer

Statistics

RNA-seq data simulated from a negative binomial distribution, sampled without replacement, or modified from read counts were analyzed to compare differential gene expression analysis methods in terms of false discovery rate control and power. The goals of the study were to determine optimal sample sizes/proportions of differential expression needed to adequately control false discovery rate and which differential gene expression methods performed best with the given simulation methods. Parametric tools like edgeR and limma-voom tended to be conservative when controlling false discovery rate from a negative binomial distribution as the proportion of differential expression increased. For the nonparametric simulation methods, …

On Lasso Estimation Of Linear Mixed Model For High Dimensional Longitudinal Data, Qian Wen Jan 2021

On Lasso Estimation Of Linear Mixed Model For High Dimensional Longitudinal Data, Qian Wen

Statistics

With the advancement of technology in data collection, repeated measurements with high dimensional covariates have become increasingly common. The classical statistics approach for modeling the data of this kind is via the linear mixed model with temporally correlated error. However, most of the research reported in the literature for variable selection is for independent response data. In this study, the proposed algorithm employs Expectation and Maximization (EM) and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) approaches under the linear mixed model scheme with the assumption of Gaussianity, an approach that works for data with interdependence. Our algorithm involves two steps: …

Robustness Of The Eigenvalue Test For Community Structure, Matthew Allan Rose Jan 2021

Robustness Of The Eigenvalue Test For Community Structure, Matthew Allan Rose

Statistics

Networks can take on many different forms, such as the people from the University you attend. Within these networks, community structure may exist. This "community structure" refers to the clustering of nodes by a common characteristic. There are many algorithms to extract communities within a network. These methods depend on the assumption that structure exists within the network. Statistical tests have been proposed to test this assumption. In practice, networks may have measurement errors. This usually comes in the form of missing data or other faults. As a result, networks may not tell the full story at surface level and …

Exploring The Effects Of Interleaving On Mind-Wandering, Alyssa Lynn Miller Jan 2021

Exploring The Effects Of Interleaving On Mind-Wandering, Alyssa Lynn Miller

Psychology

Research has shown that interleaving (a study technique where two topics are practiced in an alternating fashion) enhances learning and memory. However, it is unclear whether interleaving impacts the frequency of mind-wandering. The current research explores the extent to which interleaving reduces mind-wandering using a between-subjects design. Participants completed the experiment remotely and learned 40 bird images from 8 distinct families. Bird images were presented in pairs from two different families (e.g., interleaved) or individually from one family (e.g., blocked). After a brief distractor task, participants completed a final classification test. Participants also completed a post-assessment questionnaire regarding the level …

The Inkblot Re-Conceptualized: Developing An Implicit Situational Judgment Test Of Multiple Components Of Poor And Optimal Functioning, Roberta Linda Irvin Jan 2021

The Inkblot Re-Conceptualized: Developing An Implicit Situational Judgment Test Of Multiple Components Of Poor And Optimal Functioning, Roberta Linda Irvin

Psychology

Situation judgment tests (SJTs), which provide a balance between global personality measurement and context-specific social-cognitive processes, can be combined with implicit measurement approaches to limit some of the biases that are common in self-reports. Based on such considerations, the author developed an implicit SJT, called the Inkblot Scale, to investigate three components of optimal functioning – Happiness, Success, and Friendliness – that can be assessed from the same response set. Undergraduates completed the Inkblot Scale and various measures related to each component of optimal functioning (n = 184) before reporting their daily experiences and behaviors for two weeks (n = …

Shared Nostalgia: Moving From An Individual To An Interpersonal Approach To The Study Of A Social Emotion, Taylor Anne Fiorito Jan 2021

Shared Nostalgia: Moving From An Individual To An Interpersonal Approach To The Study Of A Social Emotion, Taylor Anne Fiorito

Psychology

Nostalgia is a common, bittersweet experience described as a sentimental longing for the past. Past research has found nostalgia to be a social emotion that increases feelings of social connectedness and motivates social engagement. Despite the prevalence of people reminiscing in conversations, few studies have studied nostalgia in a social setting. Thus, this research examined an uncharted area of nostalgia: shared nostalgia. The current work defines shared nostalgia as an experience in which nostalgia is transmitted to at least one other person or exchanged between two or more people. Study 1 investigated the prevalence and affective nature of shared nostalgia …

Measuring Infant Emotion Regulation Within The Still Face Procedure: A Novel Approach To Assessing Regulation Development In The Context Of Prenatal Maternal Stress, Angela Grace Beach Bagne Jan 2021

Measuring Infant Emotion Regulation Within The Still Face Procedure: A Novel Approach To Assessing Regulation Development In The Context Of Prenatal Maternal Stress, Angela Grace Beach Bagne

Psychology

A growing body of literature demonstrates that prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) can influence infant and child outcomes across developmental domains. The timing of PNMS exposure may be particularly important, and late PNMS has predicted poorer emotion regulation outcomes in infancy and childhood. Behavioral indicators and measures of emotion regulation have differed widely in the existing PNMS literature, however. Additionally, despite the well-established use of the Still Face Procedure (SFP) to assess emotion regulation and infant-maternal interactions in the regulatory process, it has not been used within the context of PNMS. In the current research, the SFP was used in conjunction …

I Want To Break Up: Testing An Integrative Framework For Understanding And Predicting Romantic Relationship Dissolution, Anna Maruska Semanko Jan 2021

I Want To Break Up: Testing An Integrative Framework For Understanding And Predicting Romantic Relationship Dissolution, Anna Maruska Semanko

Psychology

Romantic relationships are desired by the majority of individuals. Despite this prevalent desire, romantic relationships end often. What are the underlying motivations and reasons for breaking up with a romantic partner? The current research investigated this question through an innovative theoretical approach. First, salient beliefs associated with breaking up with a committed romantic partner were elicited (Study 1). Based on the prominent themes associated with breaking up, measures were designed to test a unique integrative framework for understanding and predicting romantic relationship dissolution (Study 2). This integrative framework is largely based on the theory of reasoned action (Fishbein & Ajzen, …

Exclusion Statistics For Particles With A Discrete Spectrum, Stéphane Ouvry, Alexios P. Polychronakos Jan 2021

Exclusion Statistics For Particles With A Discrete Spectrum, Stéphane Ouvry, Alexios P. Polychronakos

Publications and Research

We formulate and study the microscopic statistical mechanics of systems of particles with exclusion statistics in a discrete one-body spectrum. The statistical mechanics of these systems can be expressed in terms of effective single-level grand partition functions obeying a generalization of the standard thermodynamic exclusion statistics equation of state. We derive explicit expressions for the thermodynamic potential in terms of microscopic cluster coefficients and show that the mean occupation numbers of levels satisfy a nesting relation involving a number of adjacent levels determined by the exclusion parameter. We apply the formalism to the harmonic Calogero model and point out a …

The First Exit-Time Analysis Of An Approximate Barndorff-Nielsen And Shephard Model, With Data Science-Based Applications In The Commodity Market, Shantanu Awasthi Jan 2021

The First Exit-Time Analysis Of An Approximate Barndorff-Nielsen And Shephard Model, With Data Science-Based Applications In The Commodity Market, Shantanu Awasthi

Mathematics

In this dissertation, an approximate version of the Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard model, driven by a Brownian motion and a Lévy subordinator, is formulated. The first-exit time of the log-return process for this model is analyzed. It is shown that with a certain probability, the first-exit time process of the log-return is decomposable into the sum of the first exit time of the Brownian motion with drift, and the first exit time of a Lévy subordinator with drift. Subsequently, the probability density functions of the first exit time of some specific Lévy subordinators, connected to stationary, self-decomposable variance processes, are studied. …

Color Charge Correlations In The Proton At Nlo: Beyond Geometry Based Intuition, Adrian Dumitru, Heikki Mäntysaari, Risto Paatelainen Jan 2021

Color Charge Correlations In The Proton At Nlo: Beyond Geometry Based Intuition, Adrian Dumitru, Heikki Mäntysaari, Risto Paatelainen

Publications and Research

Color charge correlators provide fundamental information about the proton structure. In this Letter, we evaluate numerically two-point color charge correlations in a proton on the light cone including the next-to-leading order corrections due to emission or exchange of a perturbative gluon. The non-perturbative valence quark structure of the proton is modelled in a way consistent with high-x proton structure data. Our results show that the correlator exhibits startlingly non-trivial behavior at large momentum transfer or central impact parameters, and that the color charge correlation depends not only on the impact parameter but also on the relative transverse momentum of …

Wavefront-Selective Fano Resonant Metasurface, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù Jan 2021

Wavefront-Selective Fano Resonant Metasurface, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù

Publications and Research

Fano resonances are conventionally understood as sharp spectral features with selectivity in the momentum-frequency domain, implying that they can be excited only by plane waves with specific frequencies and incident angles. We demonstrate that Fano resonances can be made generally selective in the space-frequency domain. They can be tailored to resonate only when excited by a frequency, polarization, and wavefront of choice. This generalization reveals that Fano systems are characterized by eigenwaves that scatter to their time-reversed image upon reflection. Although in conventional Fano systems this trivially occurs for normally incident plane waves, we show that, in general, the selected …

Calabi-Yau Products: Graded Quivers For General Toric Calabi-Yaus, Sebastián Franco, Azeem Hasan Jan 2021

Calabi-Yau Products: Graded Quivers For General Toric Calabi-Yaus, Sebastián Franco, Azeem Hasan

Publications and Research

The open string sector of the topological B-model on CY (m + 2)-folds is described by m-graded quivers with superpotentials. This correspondence generalizes the connection between CY (m + 2)-folds and gauge theories on the worldvolume of D(5 − 2m)-branes for m = 0, . . . , 3 to arbitrary m. In this paper we introduce the Calabi-Yau product, a new algorithm that starting from the known quiver theories for a pair of toric CYm+2 and CYn+2 produces the quiver theory for a related CYm+n+3 …
