Using Adaptive Research Design To Define The Proper Methodology To Use A Data Peek For Power: Step By Step Process, Tom Wasser Nov 2021

Using Adaptive Research Design To Define The Proper Methodology To Use A Data Peek For Power: Step By Step Process, Tom Wasser

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

When planning or conducting research in the hospital setting, often termed Real-World Environment (RWE), therapeutic assumptions and outcomes are often different than in the Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT) where medications, devices and therapies are tested and developed. This is because RWE research has a lack of experimental control, additional confounding due to patient complications and comorbid conditions, lack of pure patient selection and compliance with therapy in the patients being treated and many other factors as well. However, when RWE experiments are conducted, sample size determination using data from the RCT is common because that is the only data that …

Facilitating Heuristic Evaluation For Novice Evaluators, Anas Abulfaraj Nov 2021

Facilitating Heuristic Evaluation For Novice Evaluators, Anas Abulfaraj

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

Heuristic evaluation (HE) is one of the most widely used usability evaluation methods. The reason for its popularity is that it is a discount method, meaning that it does not require substantial time or resources, and it is simple, as evaluators can evaluate a system guided by a set of usability heuristics. Despite its simplicity, a major problem with HE is that there is a significant gap in the quality of results produced by expert and novice evaluators. This gap has made some scholars question the usefulness of the method as they claim that the evaluation results are a product …

Artificial Intelligence Algorithms For Medical Imaging And Healthcare, Jonathan William Stubblefield Nov 2021

Artificial Intelligence Algorithms For Medical Imaging And Healthcare, Jonathan William Stubblefield

Student Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we studied several applications of artificial intelligence applications to healthcare. In the first chapter, we examined a machine learning algorithm for classifying patients presenting to the emergency department with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Patients presenting with this life-threatening condition require a quick and accurate assessment of whether the condition is infectious or cardiac in etiology as the treatments for these etiologies of ARDS differ significantly. We used a transfer learning approach to develop our model. The model used a combination of clinical data and a chest x-ray as its input and achieved an accuracy 0.675 on …

Dynamic Wireless Sensor Network Simulation, Mitchell Clay Nov 2021

Dynamic Wireless Sensor Network Simulation, Mitchell Clay

Student Theses and Dissertations

Wireless sensors have become fairly ubiquitous, having a wide variety of applications. Commonly, sensors are deployed as solitary devices, and usually in a fixed position. The ability to network several wireless sensors together as one large network, especially with moving nodes, provides solutions to data gathering that might otherwise be impossible. These additions add complexity, however, and development times and costs can be significantly higher than with stand-alone static nodes. The ability to simulate combinations of hardware, software, and networking algorithms is useful for system planning and development. Tools exist to simulate some aspects of these dynamic wireless sensor networks, …

Biotinylation As A Tool To Enhance The Uptake Of Small Molecules In Gram-Negative Bacteria, Ankit Pandeya, Ling Yang, Olaniyi Alegun, Chamikara Karunasena, Chad Risko, Zhenyu Li, Yinan Wei Nov 2021

Biotinylation As A Tool To Enhance The Uptake Of Small Molecules In Gram-Negative Bacteria, Ankit Pandeya, Ling Yang, Olaniyi Alegun, Chamikara Karunasena, Chad Risko, Zhenyu Li, Yinan Wei

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern. The shrinking selection of effective antibiotics and lack of new development is making the situation worse. Gram-negative bacteria more specifically pose serious threat because of their double layered cell envelope and effective efflux systems, which is a challenge for drugs to penetrate. One promising approach to breach this barrier is the “Trojan horse strategy”. In this technique, an antibiotic molecule is conjugated with a nutrient molecule that helps the antibiotic to enter the cell through dedicated transporters for the nutrient. Here, we explored the approach using biotin conjugation with a florescent molecule …

Investigating The Growth Of Algae Under Low Atmospheric Pressures For Potential Food And Oxygen Production On Mars, Leena M. Cycil, Elisabeth M. Hausrath, Douglas W. Ming, Christopher T. Adcock, James Raymond, Daniel Remias, Warren P. Ruemmele

Geoscience Faculty Research

With long-term missions to Mars and beyond that would not allow resupply, a self-sustaining Bioregenerative Life Support System (BLSS) is essential. Algae are promising candidates for BLSS due to their completely edible biomass, fast growth rates and ease of handling. Extremophilic algae such as snow algae and halophilic algae may also be especially suited for a BLSS because of their ability to grow under extreme conditions. However, as indicated from over 50 prior space studies examining algal growth, little is known about the growth of algae at close to Mars-relevant pressures. Here, we explored the potential for five algae species …

Infectious Disease Modeling And Intervention Planning, Shalome Hanisha Anand Tatapudi Nov 2021

Infectious Disease Modeling And Intervention Planning, Shalome Hanisha Anand Tatapudi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Disease outbreaks caused by existing and emerging pathogens pose a serious threat to local and global communities in the form of epidemics and pandemics, respectively. The 2009 H1N1 pandemic and the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic are exemplars of how underprepared both the developed and developing nations are at mitigating pandemics.

Mathematical modeling and simulation of disease outbreaks has served as a powerful tool to understand disease transmission dynamics. They also aid in developing effective intervention strategies. However, existing models are usually particularized to a region, or a specific disease pathogen and interventions used in these models may not translate well to …

Computational Analysis Of Flight Deck Structural Behaviour Under Variable Loadings, Victoria G. Carter, Md Jahir Rizvi Nov 2021

Computational Analysis Of Flight Deck Structural Behaviour Under Variable Loadings, Victoria G. Carter, Md Jahir Rizvi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The flight deck of an aircraft carrier is subjected to various loads. In addition, the operation of fixed-wing aircraft presents unique structural requirements for the deck. This paper, therefore, compares the structural behaviour of a flight deck which was designed following the guidelines of three classification societies: Lloyd’s Register (LR), Det Norske Veritas Germanischer Lloyd (DNV), and Registro Italiano Navale (RINA). The loading scenarios considered in this work represent the operation of an F-35B Lightning jet from a Queen Elizabeth-class (QEC) aircraft carrier. A commercial finite element analysis (FEA) software ANSYS was also used to investigate the deflection, stress and …

Treatment Selection Using Prototyping In Latent-Space With Application To Depression Treatment, Akiva Kleinerman, Ariel Rosenfeld, David Benrimoh, Robert Fratila, Caitrin Armstrong, Joseph Mehltretter, Eliyahu Shneider, Amit Yaniv-Rosenfeld, Jordan Karp, Charles F. Reynolds, Gustavo Turecki, Adam Kapelner

Publications and Research

Machine-assisted treatment selection commonly follows one of two paradigms: a fully personalized paradigm which ignores any possible clustering of patients; or a sub-grouping paradigm which ignores personal differences within the identified groups. While both paradigms have shown promising results, each of them suffers from important limitations. In this article, we propose a novel deep learning-based treatment selection approach that is shown to strike a balance between the two paradigms using latent-space prototyping. Our approach is specifically tailored for domains in which effective prototypes and sub-groups of patients are assumed to exist, but groupings relevant to the training objective are not …

American And Finnish Parents’ Perceptions Of The Distance Learning Experience During The 2020 Covid-19 School Closure, Annica Cristina Karlsson

Student Theses and Dissertations

By the end of the 2019-2020 academic year, the COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted the academic experience of 1.5 billion students in 165 countries (Early Childhood Education Journal, 2020). Due to school closures, many schools transitioned to distance learning. As students were adapting to a new learning environment, parents faced the challenge of providing a high-quality learning environment and ensuring children’s learning and academic attainment. The study was part of a larger project, and this thesis took a preliminary approach and conducted a cross-country comparison between the United States (U.S.) and Finland on parental perceptions of the distance learning experience with …

Moving In Fluid: Exploring How Fishes Manipulate Water To Swim Efficiently, Nils B. Tack Nov 2021

Moving In Fluid: Exploring How Fishes Manipulate Water To Swim Efficiently, Nils B. Tack

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Moving through a dense fluid such as water presents some unique challenges to minimizing energy use and maximizing performance (i.e., speed). Due to animal-fluid interactions during swimming (drag and thrust production) fish have evolved a variety of morphological structures and locomotor mechanisms. For instance, fish rely on body bending and/or fins to interact with the surrounding water such that energy can be transferred to generate thrust. Typically, this synergy promotes morphologies and behaviors aimed at enhancing propulsive efficiency and/or minimizing metabolic activity to lessen the cost of transport (COT). This work focuses on quantifying the energetic and hydromechanical benefits of …
