Mathematicians’ Beliefs, Instruction, And Students’ Beliefs: How Related Are They?, Rachel Rupnow Nov 2021

Mathematicians’ Beliefs, Instruction, And Students’ Beliefs: How Related Are They?, Rachel Rupnow

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

It is generally accepted that teachers’ beliefs impact their instructional choices, but characterizations of that relationship are limited in college settings. Furthermore, examinations of instructor beliefs, instruction, and student beliefs together in one setting are rarely described. Based on interviews with two Abstract Algebra instructors, classroom video from three units of instruction, and survey and interview data from students in the classes, this paper examines instructors’ stated beliefs, ways these beliefs manifested in their teaching, and students’ beliefs across the course. Both instructors made curricular choices clearly aligned with their stated views of the nature of mathematics, learning, and teaching. …

Experiences Of African American Students In Pre-Licensure Schools Of Nursing: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Barbara Jean White Nov 2021

Experiences Of African American Students In Pre-Licensure Schools Of Nursing: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Barbara Jean White

Dissertations

Despite more than 40 years of research and governmental support, African Americans continue to be underrepresented in the nursing profession compared to the population it serves. Though some progress has been made over the past 20 years, the American Nurses Association (ANA), American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) and Institute of Medicine (IOM) continue to identify increasing diversity as a disciplinary priority. Further understanding of the experiences of African American nursing students is needed to inform decisions about recruitment, retention and successful matriculation of these students. This qualitative descriptive study focused on understanding the …

Adsorption Of Helium On A Charged Propeller Molecule: Hexaphenylbenzene, Siegfried Kollotzek, Florent Calvo, Serge Krasnokutski, Fabio Zappa, Paul Scheier, Olof E. Echt Nov 2021

Adsorption Of Helium On A Charged Propeller Molecule: Hexaphenylbenzene, Siegfried Kollotzek, Florent Calvo, Serge Krasnokutski, Fabio Zappa, Paul Scheier, Olof E. Echt

Faculty Publications

Physisorption on planar or curved graphitic surfaces or aromatic rings has been investigated by various research groups, but in these studies the substrate was usually strictly rigid. Here we report a combined experimental and theoretical study of helium adsorption on cationic hexaphenylbenzene (HPB), a propeller-shaped molecule. The orientation of its propeller blades is known to be sensitive to the environment, with substantial differences between the molecule in the gas phase and in the crystalline solid. Mass spectra of HenHPB+, synthesized in helium nanodroplets, indicate enhanced stability for ions containing n = 2, 4, 14, 28, 42, …

Moisture Transport Associated With Southwest Monsoon Rainfall Over Sri Lanka In Relatively Wet And Dry Rainfall Years, Sherly Shelton Nov 2021

Moisture Transport Associated With Southwest Monsoon Rainfall Over Sri Lanka In Relatively Wet And Dry Rainfall Years, Sherly Shelton

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Atmospheric moisture transportation associated with the occurrence of relatively wet and dry southwest monsoon (SWM) years over Sri Lanka is still not fully understood. This study focused on investigating the role of moisture transport in contrast SWM years. We selected seven wet (SWMWet) and nine dry (SWMDry) years for 1985-2015 and found that the whole country experiences above-average (below average) rainfall in SWMWet (SWMDry) years. In SWMWet years, strengthening moisture-laden low-level jets (LLJ) from the Arabian Sea bring a large amount of moisture towards Sri Lanka. In contrast, the weakening of the …

Library In The Perspective Of Al-Quran, Dwi Ratna Kartikawati, Aam Slamet Rusydiana, Mohamad Andri Ibrahim, Abdillah Arif Nasution, Sudana Sudana

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Qur'an views the Library as an essential means to be able to change a nation that initially did not understand anything into a country that is knowledgeable and has a high civilization. This is evidenced by the mention of the roles of libraries in the Qur'an, which at least consists of several concepts, the concept of reading, the concept of writing, the idea of science, the concept of education, the concept of worship, the concept of communication and information. The command to read means that Allah SWT wants reading facilities so that the teaching of reading becomes a reality …

Mature, midgestation, beef cows (Bos tarus) strip-grazed post-harvest residues as paddocks over 126 days. Body condition-scores and weights were monitored. Forage yield, weathering losses and forage composition were monitored on grazed and ungrazed areas. Forage selection and intake were estimated. Grain yields, dropped grain, initial crop residue concentrations of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM) yields were similar among hybrids. Hybrids varied in infestation of maize borers, …

Supplementation Of Temperate Pastures, D. H. Rearte, G. A. Pieroni Nov 2021

Supplementation Of Temperate Pastures, D. H. Rearte, G. A. Pieroni

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Generally in temperate regions, beef and milk were produced on extensive systems with forage from perennial pasture and natural grassland being the main component of animal diet. Supplementation on pasture was usually applied strategically to supply nutrients to grazing cattle only when forage availability was not enough to satisfy animal’s requirements. At present beef and dairy production systems have become more intensive and even when forage from pasture continue being the main component of the diet higher level of different type of supplement are fed to the animals. Intensive systems are characterized by a higher stocking rate capable of consuming …

Feeding Of Conserved Forage - Implications To Grassland Management And Production, C. W. Holmes, P. N. P. Matthews Nov 2021

Feeding Of Conserved Forage - Implications To Grassland Management And Production, C. W. Holmes, P. N. P. Matthews

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

This review will focus on the use of conserved forages in pastoral dairy farm systems; especially on their conservation as an aid to good grazing management during periods of rapid pasture growth, and on their consumption as an aid to good feeding management and grazing management during periods of slow pasture growth. Conservation of pasture, in order to move it from one time to another later time, always involves “costs”, either financial expenditure or physical losses (of dry matter/quality) or both, which must be evaluated in the whole system.

Most of the data is drawn from New Zealand and Australia, …

Improving Text-To-Image Synthesis Using Contrastive Learning, Hui Ye, Xiulong Yang, Martin Takáč, Raj Sunderraman, Shihao Ji Nov 2021

Improving Text-To-Image Synthesis Using Contrastive Learning, Hui Ye, Xiulong Yang, Martin Takáč, Raj Sunderraman, Shihao Ji

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

The goal of text-to-image synthesis is to generate a visually realistic image that matches a given text description. In practice, the captions annotated by humans for the same image have large variance in terms of contents and the choice of words. The linguistic discrepancy between the captions of the identical image leads to the synthetic images deviating from the ground truth. To address this issue, we propose a contrastive learning approach to improve the quality and enhance the semantic consistency of synthetic images. In the pretraining stage, we utilize the contrastive learning approach to learn the consistent textual representations for …

A New Way To Grade With Benefits To Students And Faculty: Specifications Grading, Molly Jameson Nov 2021

A New Way To Grade With Benefits To Students And Faculty: Specifications Grading, Molly Jameson

CETL Blog

n specifications grading, developed by Linda Nilson (2014), you grade student work as satisfactory/unsatisfactory depending on whether their work meets the certain specifications you laid out for it. These specifications, or specs, can be as simple as “completeness” or as complex as a series of specific criteria you set out for the students. But instead of these criteria defining a grade of C- or D+, imagine that they truly define “satisfactory” as at least B work. Each assignment or assessment in your course is given specifications (i.e., what would make this assignment receive a grade of B or higher?), and …

Role Played By Edge-Defects In The Optical Properties Of Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons, Thi-Nga Do, Godfrey Gumbs, Danhong Huang, Bui D. Hoi, Po-Hsin Shih

Publications and Research

We explore the implementation of specific optical properties of armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) through edge-defect manipulation. This technique employs the tight-binding model in conjunction with the calculated absorption spectral function. Modification of the edge states gives rise to the diverse electronic structures with striking changes in the band gap and special flat bands at low energy. The optical-absorption spectra exhibit unique excitation peaks, and they strongly depend on the type and period of the edge extension. Remarkably, there exist the unusual transition channels associated with the flat bands for selected edge-modified systems. We discovered the special rule governing how the …
