Beyond Smoothness : Incorporating Low-Rank Analysis Into Nonparametric Density Estimation, Rob Vandermeulen, Antoine Ledent
Beyond Smoothness : Incorporating Low-Rank Analysis Into Nonparametric Density Estimation, Rob Vandermeulen, Antoine Ledent
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The construction and theoretical analysis of the most popular universally consistent nonparametric density estimators hinge on one functional property: smoothness. In this paper we investigate the theoretical implications of incorporating a multi-view latent variable model, a type of low-rank model, into nonparametric density estimation. To do this we perform extensive analysis on histogram-style estimators that integrate a multi-view model. Our analysis culminates in showing that there exists a universally consistent histogram-style estimator that converges to any multi-view model with a finite number of Lipschitz continuous components at a rate of ˜O(1/3√n) in L1 error. In contrast, the standard histogram estimator …

Functional signatures (FS) enable a master authority to delegate its signing privilege to an assistant. Concretely, the master authority uses its secret key sk(F) to issue a signing key sk(f) for a designated function f is an element of F-FS and sends both f and sk(f) to the assistant E, which is then able to compute a signature sigma(f) with respect to pk(F) for a message y in the range of f. In this paper, we modify the syntax of FS slightly to support the application scenario where a certificate of authorization is necessary. Compared with the original FS, our …

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) in critical infrastructure face serious threats of attack, motivating research into a wide variety of defence mechanisms such as those that monitor for violations of invariants, i.e. logical properties over sensor and actuator states that should always be true. Many approaches for identifying invariants attempt to do so automatically, typically using data logs, but these can miss valid system properties if relevant behaviours are not well-represented in the data. Furthermore, as the CPS is already built, resolving any design flaws or weak points identified through this process is costly. In this paper, we propose a systematic …

Study Of Two-Way Coupled Particle Laden Turbulent Flow Over A Backward-Facing Step Using Large-Eddy Simulation, Timothy Johnston
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Large-eddy simulation (LES) is a computationally viable strategy to study particle-laden turbulent flows in practically relevant configurations, although modeling challenges need to be addressed for improved predictive capabilities. In this study, we perform a comprehensive assessment of subgrid-scale (SGS) models for LES by considering a two-way coupled particle-laden turbulent flow over a backward-facing step. We consider dynamic eddy viscosity, wall-adapting local eddy viscosity (WALE), and dynamic one-equation models for the closure of the SGS stress tensor, and the random walk (RW) and the differential filter (DF) based models for the subgrid dispersion. The assessment of subgrid models is carried out …

Decoupling Power Network Equations For Real-Time Computing Applications On A Personal Computer, Rua Taha
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This research develops and implements a method for decoupling real-time power networks using general-purpose personal computers. The industry of real-time simulation of power networks is mature, with few prominent players dominating the market. The implementation, however, is limited to specialized high-end hardware and software. This endeavor serves researchers and small-scale users interested in investigating real-time applications without making a significant investment. The methodology sheds additional light on the inner workings of real-time computing, particularly parallel processing via approaches like those published in scientific papers. The described method can be implemented on a PC with multiple cores using relatively few resources …

Qualitative Insights Into The Voltage Stability Problem, Mohamed Salah Ahmed Mohamed
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This work investigates some of the bus indicators for the problem of voltage stability. The purpose is to learn more about the behavior and to observe the factors that cause mis-ranking in estimating the stability margin. Three indicators are examined, the L-index, the coupled-port method, and the P-index. it found that the L-index does not have a reliable alarm level, and when flagged with an alarm used for the P-index, it shows a large variation of the estimation accuracy across systems. Also, the coupled single-port method is a reformulated L-index method with no novelty on estimation, the novelty is only …

Finite Groups In Which The Number Of Cyclic Subgroups Is 3/4 The Order Of The Group, James Alexander Cayley
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Let $G$ be a finite group, c(G) denotes the number of cyclic subgroups of G and α(G) = c(G)/|G|. In this thesis we go over some basic properties of alpha, calculate alpha for some families of groups, with an emphasis on groups with α(G) = 3/4, as all groups with α(G) > 3/4 have been classified by Garonzi and Lima (2018). We find all Dihedral group with this property, show all groups with α(G) = 3/4 have at least |G|/2-1 involutions, and discuss existing work by Wall (1970) and Miller (1919) classifying all such groups.

During the previous OC511 project, state-of-the-art mid-fidelity engineering tools for floating wind systems were found to consistently underpredict the nonlinear, low-frequency responses of semisubmersible offshore wind platforms, leading to substantial errors in the structural loads because of low-frequency surge and pitch resonance. To examine this underprediction, a coordinated investigation with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and model-basin experiments was carried out. Both investigations involved a fixed and simplified OC5-DeepCwind semisubmersible in bichromatic waves. The wave excitations—especially the nonlinear, difference-frequency excitation—on the structure from the CFD simulations were compared to the experimental measurements for validation, with uncertainty analyses for both the …

Geochemical Investigation Of Monogenetic Volcanoes From The Pribilof Islands, Bering Sea, Alaska, Clayton L. Reinier
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Small-volume basaltic magmas found at continental intraplate environments have not been as extensively studied compared to their polygenetic counterparts. Specifically, regions such as the Bering Sea basalt province, described as a diffuse igneous province, have commonly been overlooked. Assumptions that these systems are invoked by simple, single batches of magma has subsequently left a gap in understanding the processes responsible for primary magma generation away from plate boundaries with little tectonic influence. The following studies that constitute this thesis focus on an in-depth geochemical investigation at the crystal and sub-crystal scale to evaluate lithospheric mantle heterogeneities, processes that govern primary …

2d Vs 3d Tracking In Bacterial Motility Analysis, Jacqueline Acres, Jay Nadeau
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Digital holographic microscopy provides the ability to observe throughout a large volume without refocusing. This capability enables simultaneous observations of large numbers of microorganisms swimming in an essentially unconstrained fashion. However, computational tools for tracking large 4D datasets remain lacking. In this paper, we examine the errors introduced by tracking bacterial motion as 2D projections vs. 3D volumes under different circumstances: bacteria free in liquid media and bacteria near a glass surface. We find that while XYZ speeds are generally equal to or larger than XY speeds, they are still within empirical uncertainties. Additionally, when studying dynamic surface behavior, the …
Towards Automation Of Aluminum Cell Ramming Process, Maryam Salem Abdelfattah Mohamed Alkaabi
Towards Automation Of Aluminum Cell Ramming Process, Maryam Salem Abdelfattah Mohamed Alkaabi
Theses
Newly installed cathode blocks in an aluminium reduction cell, expand due to a rapid increase of temperature when passing a high current at the start-up of the cell. High thermal stresses may result if cathode blocks are lined without gaps, and this can lead to cracking of the cathodes and failure of the cell. On the other hand, leaving gaps would cause failure due to molten metal infiltration in the gaps. To overcome these problems carbon-based ramming material is used to fill these gaps. Currently ‘Filling’ is carried out manually or partially automated, but this needs to be fully automated …

Remembering The 1918 Influenza Pandemic: Missouri Education Policy And Lessons For Covid-19, Phi Nguyen
Remembering The 1918 Influenza Pandemic: Missouri Education Policy And Lessons For Covid-19, Phi Nguyen
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Amid the disruptions of COVID-19 are opportunities to reimagine schooling and education. Taking a historical perspective, this article analyzes education policy following an earlier pandemic, the influenza pandemic of 1918-19, to explore if and how educational change might be possible. Drawing on primary source analysis of Missouri education policy, I argue that influenza-related policy talk was practically non-existent, and the talk that was present mainly focused on how the flu disrupted, but not changed, school operations. Without policy talk advocating for change, policy action the years following the influenza pandemic continued along the lines of Progressive reforms that were already …
