High Fidelity Studies In Closed-Loop Control Of Unsteady Aerodynamics, Miriam Theobald-Deschine
High Fidelity Studies In Closed-Loop Control Of Unsteady Aerodynamics, Miriam Theobald-Deschine
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
We implement and explore the success of a nonlinear, closed loop flow control strategy based on POD-ROM focusing on boundary-layer transitional flow in high-fidelity computational studies involving FDL3DI ILES code. Controlling the boundary-layer transition from laminar to turbulent allows the laminar boundary-layer to be lengthened, decreasing skin-friction drag on an airfoil. Analyses are conducted on a flat plate with an elliptical leading edge, later to be implemented in future studies with real airfoil geometry. The feedback control design employs strategically placed synthetic-jet micro actuators and pressure sensors. The efficiency of the closed-loop flow control strategies is examined in comparison with …
Ecological Factors Influencing Population Dynamics Of The Mississippi Sandhill Crane, Grus Canadensis Pulla, Henry W. Woolley
Ecological Factors Influencing Population Dynamics Of The Mississippi Sandhill Crane, Grus Canadensis Pulla, Henry W. Woolley
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation encompasses three studies involving ecological factors influencing the Mississippi sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pulla) population at Mississippi Sandhill National Wildlife Refuge. To examine influences on the historical population I studied trends in nesting, number of chicks fledged annually, and their environmental and biotic drivers during 1991-2018. I expected precipitation to be positively associated with population measures and drought, extreme heat, and predation to be inversely related to population measures. To examine the influence of current habitat food production on the crane population I quantified measures of production in 2018 and 2019 and their relationship to time …
Effects Of Biological Cohesion On Wave Ripple Dynamics, Malcolm F. Cross
Effects Of Biological Cohesion On Wave Ripple Dynamics, Malcolm F. Cross
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In coastal environments, wave-generated oscillatory flow in the bottom boundary layer mobilizes sediment resulting in bedform generation and evolution. The presence of bedforms on the seafloor affects sediment transport, wave attenuation, and acoustic scattering. Many studies have examined the dynamics of sediment transport and the development of bedforms on the seafloor due to the interaction of waves and currents. However, these studies have relied heavily on laboratory experiments undertaken using sands with no biological influence. This research aims to understand the effects of increased cohesion within the sediment particles resulting from biological influences (e.g., extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)) on the …

Parallel Approach Of Adaptive Image Thresholding Algorithm On Gpu, Adhi Prahara, Andri Pranolo, Nuril Anwar, Yingchi Mao
Parallel Approach Of Adaptive Image Thresholding Algorithm On Gpu, Adhi Prahara, Andri Pranolo, Nuril Anwar, Yingchi Mao
Knowledge Engineering and Data Science
Image thresholding is used to segment an image into background and foreground using a given threshold. The threshold can be generated using a specific algorithm instead of a pre-defined value obtained from observation or experiment. However, the algorithm involves per pixel operation, histogram calculation, and iterative procedure to search the optimum threshold that is costly for high-resolution images. In this research, parallel implementations on GPU for three adaptive image thresholding methods, namely Otsu, ISODATA, and minimum cross-entropy, were proposed to optimize their computational times to deal with high-resolution images. The approach involves parallel reduction and parallel prefix sum (scan) techniques …

A Comparative Study Of Machine Learning-Based Approach For Network Traffic Classification, Kien Trang, An Hoang Nguyen
Knowledge Engineering and Data Science
Internet usage has increased rapidly and become an essential part of human life, corresponding to the rapid development of network infrastructure in recent years. Thus, protecting users’ confidential information when joining the global network becomes one of the most significant considerations. Even though multiple encryption algorithms and techniques have been applied in different parties, including internet providers, and web hosting, this situation also allows the hacker to attack the network system anonymously. Therefore, the significance of classifying network data streams to improve network system quality and security is attracting increasing study interests. This work introduces a machine learning-based approach to …

Cnn Based Face Recognition System For Patients With Down And William Syndrome, Endang Setyati, Suharyono Az, Subroto Prasetya Hudiono, Fachrul Kurniawan
Knowledge Engineering and Data Science
Down syndrome, also known as trisomy genetic condition, is a genetic disorder that affects many people. Williams syndrome is a hereditary disorder that can affect anyone at birth. It marks medical and cognitive issues, such as cardiovascular illness, developmental delays, and learning impairments. This is accompanied by exceptional verbal abilities, a gregarious attitude, and a passion for music. Down syndrome and William Syndrome are both genetic illnesses. However, it can be distinguished from the arrangement of chromosome 21. Down syndrome and William syndrome can also be identified by recognizing faces, or facial characteristics, such as observing particular facial features. Therefore, …

Melanoma Classification Based On Simulated Annealing Optimization Neural Network, Edi Jaya Kusuma, Ika Pantiawati, Sri Handayani
Knowledge Engineering and Data Science
Technology development in image processing and artificial intelligence leads to the high demand for smart systems, especially in the health sector. Cancer is one of the diseases with the highest mortality cases worldwide. Melanoma is one of the cancers commonly caused by high exposure to UV light. The earliest the melanoma is identified, the higher the patient's chance of recovering. Therefore, this study proposes melanoma detection based on BPNN optimized by a simulated annealing algorithm. This research utilizes PH2 dermoscopic image data containing 200 color digital images in BMP format. The data is processed using color feature extraction techniques to …

A Discipline In Search Of A Voice: A Corpus Linguistic Study Of Evaluation Scholarly Literature, Aaron Wilson Kates
Dissertations
Linguists use the concept of discourse community (DC) to describe the speech of groups of people associated by some extrinsic purpose or interest (Swales, 1990). One defining feature of a DC is a shared lexicon. Scriven (1994), in his discussion of evaluation as a discipline, addresses the need for evaluation to have a “core subject” which would then allow, among other things, the development of “concepts and language to deal with core problems,” while noting that there exists a definite lack of clarity of language among evaluators (p. 147). Christie and Rose (2003) suggest that the lack of clarification around …
Training Wheels For Web Search: Multi-Perspective Learning To Rank To Support Children's Information Seeking In The Classroom, Garrett Allen
Training Wheels For Web Search: Multi-Perspective Learning To Rank To Support Children's Information Seeking In The Classroom, Garrett Allen
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Bicycle design has not changed for a long time, as they are well-crafted for those that possess the skills to ride, i.e., adults. Those learning to ride, however, often need additional support in the form of training wheels. Searching for information on the Web is much like riding a bicycle, where modern search engines (the bicycle) are optimized for general use and adult users, but lack the functionality to support non-traditional audiences and environments. In this thesis, we introduce a set of training wheels in the form of a learning to rank model as augmentation for standard search engines to …

(R1504) Second-Order Modified Nonstandard Runge-Kutta And Theta Methods For One-Dimensional Autonomous Differential Equations, Madhu Gupta, John M. Slezak, Fawaz K. Alalhareth, Souvik Roy, Hristo V. Kojouharov
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Nonstandard finite difference methods (NSFD) are used in physical sciences to approximate solutions of ordinary differential equations whose analytical solution cannot be computed. Traditional NSFD methods are elementary stable but usually only have first order accuracy. In this paper, we introduce two new classes of numerical methods that are of second order accuracy and elementary stable. The methods are modified versions of the nonstandard two-stage explicit Runge-Kutta methods and the nonstandard one-stage theta methods with a specific form of the nonstandard denominator function. Theoretical analysis of the stability and accuracy of both modified NSFD methods is presented. Numerical simulations that …

(R1496) Impact Of Electronic States Of Conical Shape Of Indium Arsenide/Gallium Arsenide Semiconductor Quantum Dots, Md. Fayz-Al-Asad, Md. Al-Rumman, Md. Nur Alam, Salma Parvin, Cemil Tunç
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have unique atom-like properties. In this work, the electronic states of quantum dot grown on a GaAs substrate has been studied. The analytical expressions of electron wave function for cone-like quantum dot on the semiconductor surface has been obtained and the governing eigen value equation has been solved, thereby obtaining the dependence of ground state energy on radius and height of the cone-shaped -dots. In addition, the energy of eigenvalues is computed for various length and thickness of the wetting layer (WL). We discovered that the eigen functions and energies are nearly associated with the GaAs …

(R1458) A New Finite Difference Scheme For High-Dimensional Heat Equation, Jafar Biazar, Roxana Asayesh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this research, a new second-order finite difference scheme is proposed to solve two and three- dimensional heat equation. Finite difference equations are determined via a discretization approach in which spatial second order partial derivatives in x and y directions are approximated simultaneously while in the classic method, each spatial partial derivative is replaced by a central finite difference approximation, separately. By this new discretization scheme and also using the forward difference to the first-order time derivative, a finite difference equation is obtained for the parabolic equation. This approach is explicit and similar to other explicit approaches, an interval for …
Analysis Of Titan's Fluvial Features Using Numerical Modeling, Jeshurun Horton
Analysis Of Titan's Fluvial Features Using Numerical Modeling, Jeshurun Horton
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
River channels have been observed near the Huygens probe landing site on the surface of Titan, along with evidence of rounded water ice boulders transported through fluid flow. Evidence near the landing site suggests active flow of liquid methane, which has motivated the study of the effects of sediment load and channel sizes on Titan’s fluvial features. A numerical model is used to determine the viscosity, flow velocity, and critical boulder transport diameter based on channel size, slope, and a range of sediment concentrations. This model achieves two ends: first, observed boulder diameters are used to determine the ideal channel …

Engineers play a central role in addressing the challenges which face society, and recent literature highlights the need for emphasis on the development of professional skills in engineering programmes. This paper describes the outcomes of a study which investigated students’ experiences of reflecting on the development of their professional skills using an ePortfolio in a pilot project. A focus group was used to capture students’ experiences of the reflection process and the use of the ePortfolio. Transcripts were analysed thematically to draw out the key experiences and to provide feed-forward advice for the next iteration of the project. The findings …
Plant Disease Detection Through Convolutional Neural Networks: A Survey Of Existing Literature, Best Practices, And Implementation, Kevin Label
Master's Theses
In the United States alone, common diseases spread among plants account for billions of dollars lost in crop yield each year. This issue is exacerbated in countries with less infrastructure to defend against crop epidemics, and can lead to famine and forced migration. Farmers can seek the help of plant pathology experts to defend against diseases and detect crop irregularities early on. However, access to experts can be difficult, and even those trained in the field may miss symptoms before it is too late. To assist in early disease detection, a number of papers have been released on the potential …

Advances in biomedicine are largely fueled by exploring uncharted territories of human biology. Machine learning can both enable and accelerate discovery, but faces a fundamental hurdle when applied to unseen data with distributions that differ from previously observed ones—a common dilemma in scientific inquiry. We have developed a new deep learning framework, called Portal Learning , to explore dark chemical and biological space. Three key, novel components of our approach include: (i) end-to-end, step-wise transfer learning, in recognition of biology’s sequence-structure-function paradigm, (ii) out-of-cluster meta-learning, and (iii) stress model selection. Portal Learning provides a practical solution to the out-of-distribution (OOD) …

On The Role Of Matrix-Weights Elements In Consensus Algorithms For Multi-Agent Systems, Joshua Ogbebor, Xiangyu Meng
On The Role Of Matrix-Weights Elements In Consensus Algorithms For Multi-Agent Systems, Joshua Ogbebor, Xiangyu Meng
Faculty Publications
This paper examines the roles of the matrix weight elements in matrix-weighted consensus. The consensus algorithms dictate that all agents reach consensus when the weighted graph is connected. However, it is not always the case for matrix weighted graphs. The conditions leading to different types of consensus have been extensively analysed based on the properties of matrix-weighted Laplacians and graph theoretic methods. However, in practice, there is concern on how to pick matrix-weights to achieve some desired consensus, or how the change of elements in matrix weights affects the consensus algorithm. By selecting the elements in the matrix weights, different …

Local as well as national economy and safety depend on the network characteristics of the transportation infrastructures. Destruction of transportation infrastructures causes the direct cost of the reconstruction as well as indirect cost due to loss of mobility. In addition, emergency response and recovery cannot be rendered if access to the affected community is hampered due to a damaged transportation network. Hence, researchers as well national and international organizations are focusing more on a resilience-based approach instead of a traditional recovery-based approach for the transportation infrastructures recently. As a result, there exist a high number of research articles that developed …

Adapting Single-View View Synthesis With Multiplane Images For 3d Video Chat, Anurag Venkata Uppuluri
Master's Theses
Activities like one-on-one video chatting and video conferencing with multiple participants are more prevalent than ever today as we continue to tackle the pandemic. Bringing a 3D feel to video chat has always been a hot topic in Vision and Graphics communities. In this thesis, we have employed novel view synthesis in attempting to turn one-on-one video chatting into 3D. We have tuned the learning pipeline of Tucker and Snavely's single-view view synthesis paper — by retraining it on MannequinChallenge dataset — to better predict a layered representation of the scene viewed by either video chat participant at any given …
Effects Of Aging On Mouse Rotator Cuff Tendon Biomechanics, Chinmay Sagar Patwardhan
Effects Of Aging On Mouse Rotator Cuff Tendon Biomechanics, Chinmay Sagar Patwardhan
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Rotator cuff tendon injuries and tear are caused by overuse, falling, or other accidents, and are often associated with old age. The severe injuries and tear can be debilitating and require nonsurgical treatment for partial tear and arthroscopic surgery for complete tear. The frequent location of injuries and tear are at the enthesis region, the interface where the tendon tissue gradually hardens and merges into the bone. Although aging has been identified as an important factor for rotator cuff tendon injuries and tear, how the mechanical properties of the bone-tendon complex evolve along with age is still a knowledge gap. …

Why Searle's Objection To Twin Earth Is Problematic, Paul F. Scheeler
Honors Theses
The philosopher John Searle wrote that, “The fundamental question in the philosophy of language has always been: How does language relate to reality?” For much of history, people assumed the answer to this question was “the mind”, and the debate was then about how the mind related language to reality. Starting in the 1970s, this view was challenged by the philosopher Hilary Putnam and others who claimed that meaning is not only in the mind but also involved the environment (a view known as semantic externalism). In this paper, I will give some background to Putnam’s semantic externalism and will …
The Cantor Set, Trees, And Compact Metric Spaces, Wyatt N. Lee
The Cantor Set, Trees, And Compact Metric Spaces, Wyatt N. Lee
Honors Theses
The Cantor Set is a famous topological set developed from an infinite process of starting with the interval [0,1] and, at each iteration, removing the middle third of the intervals remaining. Our goal is to determine some of the properties of this unintuitive set and to show that it is homeomorphic to any general compact metric space with similar properties. To do so, we show that the Cantor Set is topologically equivalent to a tree, a more familiar structure, and use this fact to establish a homeomorphism to the general compact metric space.

Qualitative Research On Pant Fit: To Improve Plus-Size Fit In The Plus-Size Market, Lenora Brown
Theses
This study explored the plussize apparel fit and the satisfaction of the plussize women in the United States. According to researchers, there is a well-known gap for apparel grading when it comes to plus-size apparel. This study took a qualitative approach and used structured interviews and surveys with twenty plus-size women size 16 through 22 and ages ranging from 22 through 50 in the Midwest area. The results of the interviews and the survey indicate the plus-size woman is unsatisfied with the fit of their clothing, more specifically the fit of their pants. The results indicate there are many variants …
