Theoretical Linguistic Structures For Dealing With Treebanks In The Syntactic Context, Dioneia Motta Monte-Serrat, Evandro Eduardo Seron Ruiz, Carlo Cattani

Information Sciences Letters

The linguistic process involves symbols and interpretation, which are fundamental elements both in human language and machine language (be it supervised or unsupervised learning). Axiomatic and logical elements form the basis of language and give clues as to why syntactic parsing distorts rules of language. In this paper we discuss the possibility that syntax and semantics are side by side in the parsing, and the semantics must be in accordance with the dynamic structure of the language, and not decontextualized into label categories, which make the language static. It is also shown that the axiomatic-logical structure is the most adequate …

The Negro Abraham, Kenneth W. Porter

Florida Historical Quarterly

One of the most remarkable personalities produced by the African race in this country before general emancipation was an illiterate runaway slave who spent almost all his mature life among Seminole Indians. This judgment is, perhaps, either too cautious to be meaningful or too bold to be convincing, according to the direction from which one chooses to approach it.

High Cognitive Load Situations Decrease Both Gait And Cognitive Performance, Hyeon Jung (Judith) Kim Mar 2021

High Cognitive Load Situations Decrease Both Gait And Cognitive Performance, Hyeon Jung (Judith) Kim

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

A high cognitive load situation (HCLS) is completing two or more tasks simultaneously (i.e. walking while talking). Differential allocation of attentional demands creates HCLS, potentially deteriorating cognitive and/or gait performance, impacting fall risk. This study investigated whether different load types [(Single-task (ST): talking/walking only, and HCLS: walking while talking on a phone)] impacted gait and cognitive performance among young (n=8; age=23.16±1.96yrs), middle-aged (n=14; age=44.79±7.42yrs), and older (n=15; age=74.47±3.91yrs) adults. In 3-minute trials, participants completed single-task walking (ST-W) and phone conversations with easy (e.g., favorite food, ST-E) and difficult (e.g., personal relationships, ST-D) topics, and also combined walking and talking (easy: …

Building And Using Digital Libraries For Etds, Edward A. Fox

The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the high value of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), the global collection has seen limited use. To extend such use, a new approach to building digital libraries (DLs) is needed. Fortunately, recent decades have seen that a vast amount of “gray literature” has become available through a diverse set of institutional repositories as well as regional and national libraries and archives. Most of the works in those collections include ETDs and are often freely available in keeping with the open-access movement, but such access is limited by the services of supporting information systems. As explained through a set of …

Bad Grades, Making Bank, And Hating Piano: The Divergent Trajectories Of Two Creative Writers’ Semiotic Becomings, Jon Udelson

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

This article challenges lore-based conceptions of creative writers’ becomings by showing how creative writers establish their literate and disciplinary identities not only through modes of learning characterized by curricular-based advancement in their field, but also through complex social and material negotiations with communities, institutions, and engagements outside of the disciplinary domain of creative writing. Drawing primarily from case study interview data, this article argues for a theoretical and empirical approach to studying creative writers’ “semiotic becomings” in order to further inform creative writing studies research, creative writing pedagogy, and the disciplinary benefits of validating creative writers’ extra-literate and extra-disciplinary experiences.

French Fixed Expressions: Language Initiation In Writing Skill Of Lower Intermediate Level For French As Foreign Language Learners, Tri Eko Agustiningrum

Dirassat

Language mastery is based on complex language knowledge and skills. To achieve a high level of proficiency in one language, it is not enough to know many words and know how to apply grammar rules, but it is also important to understand and use specific expressions in that language. The use of expressions allows people to express themselves figuratively more naturally in the target language. Native speakers generally prefer to use expressions rather than producing new lexical combinations. For example, if a native French speaker says "He runs away very quickly", he will tend to use a common phrase such …

Title : Phonological representation of morpheme realization in some Afro-asian languages

In this article, we will study the phonological representations of many Afro-Asian languages and present the hypothesis of the phonemic origin to analyze morphological realization and its development. It is worth mentioning that historical development of phonological systems recognizes different factors, which are not mere hypotheses. Some of these factors are internal and related to the ability of linguistic speakers, while others are external and adhere to the effect of social variables and the consequences of the interaction between languages. To better understand, this phenomenon we propose comparative differential …

Title : Al-Magrib and its prehistory

Writing History has been constantly revisited to legitimize power relations of the status quo. Man should cling to his geographical whereabouts to position himself in a world perverted by historians. As for Morocco which has always been a melting pot for civilizations, languages and religions, it is undeniable that Moroccan history derives from multiple resources that tangle up. However, Morocco among many other North African countries reached cultural and linguistic unity. Many researchers are currently working to rehabilitate the memory of Morocco amidst this squabble of denominations inscribed by civilizations and colonizers.
