Struggling Against The Odds: Social Movements In Pakistan During Authoritarian Regimes, Sajjad Hussain
Struggling Against The Odds: Social Movements In Pakistan During Authoritarian Regimes, Sajjad Hussain
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation extends scholarship on the role of social movements against authoritarian regimes. It argues that movements turn into popular mobilizations and achieve successful outcomes when they occur in the consolidated phases of authoritarian regimes. Using the political opportunity structure framework, the dissertation maintains that a regime’s stability instils confidence in it to substitute coercion with incentives wherein it allows limited but strictly regulated freedoms for oppositional politics. This creates new openings for the challengers, enabling mobilization with an increase in size and scope. Unlike the initial phase, when the regime is consolidating and repressing collective action in a ruthless …
The Communicative Constitution Of Environment: Land, Weather, Climate, Leanna K. Smithberger
The Communicative Constitution Of Environment: Land, Weather, Climate, Leanna K. Smithberger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My project examines the communicative constitution of environment: how we mediate environment in discursive practice, and arrange chaotic and complex timeplaces into organized relationships of agents and objects which act and are acted upon. Climate scholars across disciplines are calling for a paradigm shift in how we understand, study, inhabit, and relate to Earth’s varied environments. In this dissertation, I demonstrate how communication practices do the work of constituting the environment as we know it, and therefore conclude with the hopeful suggestion that these same practices can be used to do the work of a paradigm shift — that is, …
Changes In Educator Attitudes Related To Trauma-Informed Care, Amira Mattison Boylston
Changes In Educator Attitudes Related To Trauma-Informed Care, Amira Mattison Boylston
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Historically, teachers have been primarily focused on fostering the academic success and progress of their students. Over the years, the role of a teacher has evolved to also encompass meeting the behavioral and social-emotional needs of their students as well. Students with difficulties in these areas are often at-risk for struggling academically and may make limited progress without adequate social-emotional or behavioral support. Unfortunately, many teacher training programs have not adequately prepared their educators to fulfill this need. This is especially concerning because of the growing number of youths who have adverse childhood experiences, which is exposure to traumatic events …

Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the perceptions, learner characteristics and preferences of Moroccan women with limited literacy skills towards the use of their smartphones to improve reading literacy skills in Latin script Moroccan Darija (LSD). The goal was to generate a range of recommendations for instructional designers, curriculum developers and education policymakers designing literacy programs for the target population. Specific focus was given to the fundamental reading sub-skill of matching letters to sounds (also known as phonemic awareness or decoding) for the Darija language. This study employed target population analysis (TPA) as a phenomenological approach that consisted of interviews with a sample …

English language learner (EL) status has high stakes implications for determining when and how ELs should be evaluated for academic achievement. In the US, students designated as English learners are assessed annually for English language proficiency (ELP), a complex construct whose conceptualization has evolved in recent years to reflect more precisely the language demands of content area achievement as reflected in the standards of individual states and state language assessment consortia, such as WIDA and ELPA21. The goal of this paper was to examine the possible role for and utility of using content area assessments to validate language proficiency mastery …

Otrouha: A Corpus Of Arabic Etds And A Framework For Automatic Subject Classification, Eman Abdelrahman, Fatimah Alotaibi, Edward A. Fox, Osman Balci
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the Arabic language is spoken by more than 300 million people and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN), there has been less research done on Arabic text data (compared to English) in the realm of machine learning, especially in text classification. In the past decade, Arabic data such as news, tweets, etc. have begun to receive some attention. Although automatic text classification plays an important role in improving the browsability and accessibility of data, Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) have not received their fair share of attention, in spite of the huge number …

Termites are both pests and non-conventional food resources in Sub-Saharan Africa. Many are reluctant to eat them, and the reasons for this rejection are poorly known. This study examined level of knowledge, and acceptance by members of the 10 main ethnic groups of southern Cameroon. Most respondents (86 percent) were aware of termites as food with sixteen vernacular names in the study areas. Acceptance among ethnic groups for consumption varied between 96 percent and 8 percent of people in a group. Barriers included being raised to not eat termites, not having many opportunities to eat termites, and dislike of the …
La Variación Sociofonológica De /Tʃ/ En Chihuahua, México, Latasha L. Valenzuela-Hernandez
La Variación Sociofonológica De /Tʃ/ En Chihuahua, México, Latasha L. Valenzuela-Hernandez
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis shows us the phonological variation of the pronunciation of [tʃ] in the vernacular Spanish of Chihuahua, Mexico, which variably converts into a different pronunciation, the variant [ʃ], through the process of lenition. Although this phenomenon is observed in various countries such as Spain, Panama, Venezuela, and the United States, it remained understudied in the sociolinguistic field until now. Therefore, this investigation contributes reliable information of the psycholinguistic, phonological, and geo-linguistic characteristics that are pertinent to the production of the fricative [ʃ]. The investigation’s methodology employs semi-directed interviews with a socially stratified corpus of thirty-two speakers from Chihuahua, Mexico. …

The Early Period Of The Formation Of Uzbek Scientific Linguistics In The Mirror Of The Development Of Linguistic Consciousness, Fazliddin Galievich Sharipov, Jahongir Galievich Sharipov
Bulletin of Gulistan State University
The article examines the role and significance of verbal groups in the formation of scientific views on morphology in Uzbek linguistics. Although scientific research on this issue was first discovered in the writings of the great scientist Aristotle, later Dionysius of Thrace, a representative of the school of Alexander, also expressed his opinion on this matter. It is impossible to ignore the contribution of Russian linguists to the development of Uzbek linguistics. However, one of the founders of Uzbek scientific linguistics, linguist Abdurauf Fitrat, made a unique contribution to the creation, analysis and transmission of the grammar of his time …

Understanding The Social Media News Consumption Among Filipinos As Transnational- Migrants In Thailand, Mark Ulla
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This study identifies news consumption practices, preferences, and motivations on social media platforms among 25 Filipino transnationals in Thailand using the lens of the news consumption model and the concept of transnationalism. Through in-depth semi-structured individual interviews and focus group discussion (FGD), findings revealed that besides routine surveillance of news consumption as commonly practiced by Filipino transnationals, other reasons why they consumed news on Facebook and YouTube are relational, personal, and social. Thus, this paper argues that Filipino transnationals in Thailand do not only consume news on social media platforms to be informed of the latest happenings, development, and political …

Ethnic Women In Sơn La Province, Northern Vietnam: The Entrepreneurial Landscape, Quynh T Nguyen, Louise Coventry, Scott Mcdonald, Nthati Rametse
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This article examines differences in the propensity to engage in entrepreneurial activities among ethnically diverse women in Sơn La Province, a disadvantaged and mountainous rural area of Vietnam. Propensity for entrepreneurialism is examined by focusing on (a) women’s use of technology, (b) experiences of financial difficulties, and (c) propensity for risk-taking. Analyzing surveys completed by 135 women, we find that plans to start a business are equally apparent among women from diverse ethnic groups. We establish a positive association between levels of entrepreneurialism (practicing entrepreneurs, intending entrepreneurs, and non-entrepreneurs) and the use of technology. However, we find no association between …

To reduce deaths due to nose and throat cancer, also known as nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC), it is important to understand factors that motivate the public to undertake cancer screening. This study employed the risk perception attitude (RPA) framework to predict factors influencing NPC risk-reducing behaviors among a group of Malaysians. A sample of Malaysians (n=215) completed a questionnaire about perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, self-efficacy, response efficacy, and intention to enact self-protective actions to reduce NPC risk. A majority of the participants had responsive (high risk, high efficacy) and proactive attitudes (low risk, high efficacy). Hierarchical regression of mediation effect under …

Psychometric Revalidation Of Children’S Hope Scale Among Indian Adolescents, Fauzia Nazam, Akbar Husain
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Hope is a positive psychological construct, and it has been found to impact academic achievement; dispositional optimism; positive affect and school grades; better problem solving, adjustment, and coping; school connectedness; self- worth; and mental health of children and adolescents. Agency and pathways are two components of hope. Agency is the goal-directed thinking, and pathways are the strategizing new ways to achieve the goal if the original path is blocked. Children’s Hope Scale (CHS) is one of the widely used scales to measure the hope of children. However, the systematic review of the factorial structure of CHS revealed that many studies …

A New Fuzzy Dea Model For Solving The Mcdm Problems In Supplier Selection, Chi-Mao Tsai, Hsuan-Shih Lee, Guo-Ya Gan
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Supplier selection is a crucial task in supply chain management, and good supply chain management is essential to a company's ability to develop sustainably and gain the trust and satisfaction of its customers. In modern supply chain management, supplier selection often takes the form of a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. Thus, to solve this problem, this study formulated a novel fuzzy MCDM model, which is based on the fuzzy data envelopment analysis model. This novel approach can transform the linguistic variables of assessment criteria into well-founded quantitative data for calculation. Moreover, our approach can effectively discriminate between decision-making units (both …
Emotions In Academic Writing/Care-Work In Academia: Notes Towards A Repositioning Of Academic Labor In India (& Beyond), Anuj Gupta
Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)
In this article I seek to reflect on a rupture that happened in my college-level writing classroom in India when a student chose to write about her experience of rape and accompanying life-long trauma in a literacy narrative assignment. This rupture, and the ways in which I struggled to engage with it, were initially discomforting but eventually led to strong convictions about the need to reposition academic writing and labor in Indian universities in a manner that sees the epistemic value of emotions in academic writing and the ethical value of care-work in academia as essential ingredients required to create …
