Skills, Iris (Pettie) Perkins

Poetry Slam 2021

"Skills" is a poem that was written the night before the slam. I looked up the word "resilient" and I just wondered how I could convey that everyone can be resilient, it just takes baby steps and small victories.

The Aki Yerushalayim Corpus: A Study Of Loanwords In Ladino, Rachel Mccullough Apr 2021

The Aki Yerushalayim Corpus: A Study Of Loanwords In Ladino, Rachel Mccullough

College of Arts and Letters Posters

Ladino (or Judeo-Spanish) is a Diasporic Jewish language spoken by Sephardi Jews. There is little existing scholarly research on Ladino, nor does it have many language learning materials. These two factors compelled me to create the Aki Yerushalayim Corpus. The initial Aki Yerushalayim Corpus of Modern Written Ladino (currently ~7,000 words) was not created to act as a reference corpus of Modern Ladino. Rather, it was created to study the composition of Ladino prose and demonstrate the utility of this type project in the subdiscipline of language documentation. In addition, the project’s focus on cultural essays and narrative prose allow …

Barriers, Challenges And Fears From Immigrants In Access To Healthcare: A Proposal For Undocumented Immigrants To Being Insured, Jose Gonzalez-Ibarra Apr 2021

Barriers, Challenges And Fears From Immigrants In Access To Healthcare: A Proposal For Undocumented Immigrants To Being Insured, Jose Gonzalez-Ibarra

Community Engagement Student Work

Access to healthcare is a global issue that needs to be addressed. Worldwide organizations have put efforts in place to overcome this problem and offer solutions and recommendations to various countries. However, these efforts have not been entirely successful. Receiving the highest attainable standard of health or only receiving care is extremely difficult or impossible for individuals who are considered vulnerable such as immigrants, especially those who are undocumented immigrants. Through the recognition of barriers, challenges and fears from immigrants accessing healthcare and a shape of social determinants of health, institutions of government, nonprofit sector and community members organized could …

Conceptualizing Professionalism For African Americans: Transcending The Detrimental Implications Of White Supremacy Culture And Anti-Black Sentiments In The Workplace, Tiana Lawrence Apr 2021

Conceptualizing Professionalism For African Americans: Transcending The Detrimental Implications Of White Supremacy Culture And Anti-Black Sentiments In The Workplace, Tiana Lawrence

Community Engagement Student Work

Current standards and interpretations of professionalism have historically been rooted and sustained through the ideology and mechanisms of white supremacy culture. The irrevocable implications of white supremacy culture and the anti-black sentiments that stem from it generate complex, layered, and damaging standards of professionalism for African Americans. These standards as they exist, are a reflection of white superiority and deem the presence and contributions of African Americans in the workplace as subservient, causing contemptuous ramifications in all aspects of their lives. A two-hour virtual networking event was developed and implemented with an audience of black professionals and professionals of color …

Race And Culturally Responsive Teaching, Sarah Whittier Apr 2021

Race And Culturally Responsive Teaching, Sarah Whittier

Community Engagement Student Work

The U.S. population is becoming more diverse with researchers projecting that minorities will be the majority by 2030. These trends are reflected within the education system; however, the racial makeup of educators and whiteness of teacher preparatory programs is not representative of the students, posing educational gaps for all and prompting researchers and educators to investigate best teaching practices. Culturally responsive teaching is a teaching practice in which the educator is aware of the different cultures and identities within and outside of their classroom, incorporates diversity into the curriculum, and challenges Eurocentric values being upheld by traditional education models. Despite …

Raising Cross-Cultural Awareness Among The Undergraduates Through Intentional Design In A Culture Course In The Us—An Exploratory Mixed-Methods Experimental Design, Hua Wang

Dissertations

The cultivation of intercultural competence is a growing trend globally, and integration of intercultural competence into coursework was widely acknowledged as a valid strategy to achieve this goal. The purpose of this study is to examine (1) the effects of the intervention of connecting one’s own culture to affect students' cross-cultural awareness development in American colleges; and (2) students’ perceptions of their own cultural‐awareness changes. Data was collected through pre-and post-questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. This study also compared between-group participants’ posttest ratings on a cross-cultural awareness scale, as well as pre- and post-test ratings within each group. The quantitative and …

Understanding God And His Redemptive Work In Computer Science, Mike Wallinga Apr 2021

Understanding God And His Redemptive Work In Computer Science, Mike Wallinga

Faculty Tenure Papers

Computer science as a discipline and computer scientists as a group tend to exhibit a technical, skills-focused disposition. Curriculum standards demand students acquire a long list of mathematical and programming abilities. Students both expect and are excited by the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of cutting-edge technology. Furthermore, programming a computer is an exercise in exactness and specificity. Is the semicolon in the right place? Are all of the parentheses matched? Does this Boolean logic or loop control statement contain an off-by-one error? Failing to state all of the required commands fully and exactly will result in a …

Music And The Brain: A Review Of Neuroscientific And Clinical Applications, Jacqueline Larivee Apr 2021

Music And The Brain: A Review Of Neuroscientific And Clinical Applications, Jacqueline Larivee

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

My research examines the relationship between neuroscience and music, exploring its clinical applications. I extensively review the specific neuroanatomic structures implicated in musical perception. Knowing the function of each brain structure as it relates to musical perception provides insight as to how music is able to elicit certain physical and emotional responses. As music interacts with the human brain, it is also able to provide social, cognitive, and emotional benefits. Given these benefits, my research argues that music is an effective therapeutic intervention for vulnerable populations. I examine the impact of music therapy on preterm infants, hearing impaired individuals, intellectually …

Gender Differences In Typed And Handwritten Probes For Written Expression Curriculum-Based Measurement, Allison Kaye Henderson Apr 2021

Gender Differences In Typed And Handwritten Probes For Written Expression Curriculum-Based Measurement, Allison Kaye Henderson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Previous research has shown that there are gender differences in Written Expression Curriculum-Based Measurement (WE CBM) with female students scoring higher than male students (Fearrington et al., 2014; Jewell & Malecki, 2005; McMaster et al, 2017; Scheiber et al., 2015). However, research looking at a different transcription mode (i.e., typed) in WE CBM is a new area of development (Mercer et al., 2019). Differences in gender with typed writing has not yet been examined. The purpose of this study was to examine if gender differences exist in typed, as well as handwritten WE CBM probes. The participants from this study …

Ghost Of Populism: Haunting The Demos In Democracy, Chloe A. Bidne Apr 2021

Ghost Of Populism: Haunting The Demos In Democracy, Chloe A. Bidne

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

Several recent elections demonstrate voters across advanced industrial economies support candidates with a populist agenda. We observe this phenomenon, for example, in the election of Donald J. Trump as president of the United States as well as across the Atlantic through the majority of voters in the UK favoring the UK Independence Party’s call to leave the European Union and return to a nationally focused agenda through Brexit. Europe allows us to be vividly aware of voter support for populist agendas through their multi-party systems, which include political parties who openly and explicitly claim a populist agenda, such as the …

Fraternité, Liberté, Égalité: Sophie De Grouchy, Moral Republicanism, And The History Of Liberalism, 1785-1815, Kathleen Theodora Mccrudden Apr 2021

Fraternité, Liberté, Égalité: Sophie De Grouchy, Moral Republicanism, And The History Of Liberalism, 1785-1815, Kathleen Theodora Mccrudden

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This thesis explores the political thought and activities of Sophie de Grouchy (1763-1822), author of Letters on Sympathy (1798) and wife of the philosophe and French Revolutionary the marquis de Condorcet. The chapters proceed chronologically and thematically. I begin by forwarding a new and earlier date for the drafting of Grouchy’s major treatise, Letters on Sympathy, and thus an original interpretation of this text. I argue that the central tenets of Grouchy’s philosophy, in particular her key argument that founds a knowledge of natural rights on the proper combination of sympathy and reason, were developed in response to her interest …

Blurred Boundaries: Iberian Representations Of The Spanish Civil War, Sarah Glenski Apr 2021

Blurred Boundaries: Iberian Representations Of The Spanish Civil War, Sarah Glenski

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In my dissertation, “Blurred Boundaries: Iberian Representations of the Spanish Civil War,” I reconceptualize the Spanish Civil War, which has been understood to have national and international significance, as an Iberian conflict of multicultural importance. To understand the war as Iberian, I work with 20th-century narrative and film from the Basque Country, Catalonia, Galicia, and Portugal that portray the time before, during, and/or after Spain’s war. With “blurred boundaries,” I refer to how I remap the ways in which the war has traditionally been viewed. In doing so, I bring the question of region to the forefront of my analysis, …

Understanding Interpersonal Trust And Task-Unrelated Thought Through Computer-Mediated Health Conversations, Tyler Stetson Apr 2021

Understanding Interpersonal Trust And Task-Unrelated Thought Through Computer-Mediated Health Conversations, Tyler Stetson

Inquiry Journal Spring 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic caused many healthcare professionals to transition to digital telehealth platforms for patient visits, making interpersonal trust more difficult to achieve. My study examined the relationship between task-unrelated thought (TUT), likability, and interpersonal trust in medically related conversations. Two questions were asked for this study: (1) Is the level of trust and likability between two chat participants related to the frequency of TUT during computer mediated conversation? and (2) What features of language are associated with TUT, trust, and likability in a computer-mediated telehealth environment? Participants chatted online via an instant message platform about personal remedies for the …

Estimating School Race/Ethnic Enrollment Effects On Student Mental Health: Density And Diversity As A Risk Or Protective Factor, Melissa J. Dupont-Reyes, Alice P. Villatoro, Jo C. Phelan, Kris Painter Apr 2021

Estimating School Race/Ethnic Enrollment Effects On Student Mental Health: Density And Diversity As A Risk Or Protective Factor, Melissa J. Dupont-Reyes, Alice P. Villatoro, Jo C. Phelan, Kris Painter

Public Health

Objective: To investigate effects of school race/ethnic enrollment on mental health in early adolescence by examining both race/ ethnic density (percent non-Latinx [NL] White enrollment) and diversity (range/size of all race/ethnic groups enrolled). Variation by student race/ethnic identity is examined as minority stressors are uniquely experienced by race/ethnic minority students.

Methods: Generalized estimating equations tested main effects of density/diversity on depressive-anxious symptoms across student-reported race/ethnic identity, adjusting for student/school factors. Owing to statistically significant Latinx-group differences by acculturative stress, four unique identities were generated: NL-Black, low-stress Latinx, high-stress Latinx, and NL-White—referent. Points of convergence of student mental health profiles across …

Adult Education For Japanese Immigrant Community: Social Bonding To Social Bridging, Naomi Nakamura Apr 2021

Adult Education For Japanese Immigrant Community: Social Bonding To Social Bridging, Naomi Nakamura

Community Engagement Student Work

Many Japanese who have been living in the U.S. for more than decades identify themselves as Japanese, not U.S. citizens. This so called transnational identity has an impact on how they assimilate or integrate to American social life. The purpose of this project is to explore the better learning environment and the effects of education for Japanese adult immigrants who may not actively participate in local communities. A workshop was held with Japanese residents in the Boston area to explore microaggressions and how people can think about their engagement with their communities. Workshop evaluation findings suggested that there is a …

Environmental Social Justice Issues And Health Risks In Younger Kids From Vulnerable Communities In The United States: Educating Youth Of Immigrant Communities To Address Social Justice Issues, Shilpa J. Kulkarni

Community Engagement Student Work

This project was conducted to examine the environmental social justice issues in the United States and how they are linked to health issues in younger children in low-income communities and people of color through the lenses of multiple theoretical frameworks. The workshop was focused on educating youth from other communities of people of color, providing them resources so that while bridging the cultural gaps they will become allies. The targeted audience was Asian-Indian youth of Maharashtrian communities across the country. The youth of mixed age group and first and second generations of immigrants from those communities participated in the workshop. …

What Drives Global Value Chain Participation?, Saunok Chakrabarty, Rupa Chanda Apr 2021

What Drives Global Value Chain Participation?, Saunok Chakrabarty, Rupa Chanda

Working Papers

Cross-border production sharing has intensified in recent decades, leading to the formation and spread of global value chains (GVC). Using a dataset containing more than 150 countries over 1990-2018, our paper tries to identify what drives backward GVC participation and forward GVC participation at the country and aggregate trade levels. We complement this general exercise with a gravity model analysis of the determinants of bilateral foreign value-added in exports. The econometric analyses highlight structural factors such as aggregate income, level of industrialization and distance to economic hubs as highly significant for GVC trade. Foreign direct investment inflows strongly influence GVC …

A New Proxy Of Financial Texts’ Readability, Abhinav Anand, Sankarshan Basu, Jalaj Pathak Apr 2021

A New Proxy Of Financial Texts’ Readability, Abhinav Anand, Sankarshan Basu, Jalaj Pathak

Working Papers

We define and construct the ‘semantic complexity index’ (SCI), which captures the marginal contribution of multi-clausal phrases (e.g., ‘slowdown in business activity); and adjectives, adverbs, and adversative conjunctions (e.g., ‘greater,’ ‘slightly,’ ‘however’) which alter the connotation of financial texts. More semantic complexity makes the text difficult to interpret, which leads to poor readability, increased ambiguity, and more investor uncertainty. We show that during 1994–2018, yearly SCIs of US firms’ MD&A section display significantly positive association with firms’ subsequent volatility and standardized unexpected earnings. We find that firms downplay negative information and exaggerate positive information, but markets react to such firms …

Exploring Educators' Perspectives On Empathy And Equity Through A Role-Play Game Experience, Jennifer Kleiber Apr 2021

Exploring Educators' Perspectives On Empathy And Equity Through A Role-Play Game Experience, Jennifer Kleiber

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this exploratory case study was to investigate potential changes in views of empathy and equity among a sample of educators engaged in a role-play simulation game. The investigation addressed three research questions: 1) Do the participants report a shift in their thinking on issues of empathy and equity after engaging in the role-play simulation? 2) How do the participants describe the nature of the shifts in their views on empathy and equity after engaging in the role-simulation game? 3) What specific features of the game do the participants identify as especially important in generating deeper and more …

An Exploration Of The Resources And Services Offered To D/Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Inmates In Massachusetts Jails And Prisons, Gabrielle Carpinella Apr 2021

An Exploration Of The Resources And Services Offered To D/Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Inmates In Massachusetts Jails And Prisons, Gabrielle Carpinella

Criminology Student Work

d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals have faced substantial discrimination when it comes to education, healthcare, and employment. This paper argues that discrimination in our criminal justice system is likely no exception. Previous research has shown that d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing inmates are treated unequally while serving time in prison (Vernon, 2010). Rather than using proactive measures to provide appropriate resources within prison, correctional facilities within the U.S. tend to be reactive to the claims of d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing inmates once they are released from prison. There is no literature that I am aware of that has …

Wallstreetbets Against Wall Street: The Role Of Reddit In The Gamestop Short Squeeze, Abhinav Anand, Jalaj Pathak Apr 2021

Wallstreetbets Against Wall Street: The Role Of Reddit In The Gamestop Short Squeeze, Abhinav Anand, Jalaj Pathak

Working Papers

By January 2021, the stock of GameStop (GME) was heavily shorted by institutional investors but an unprecedented retail campaign for pushing-up its stock price culminated in a short squeeze by the end of January 2021. Adapting recent innovations in text analysis in finance and on microblogging platforms, we present evidence that both the tone and the volume of discussions on the subreddit r/wallstreetbets had significant predictive associations with the GME return, volatility and put-call ratio.

Students’ Perceptions Of Effectiveness And Engagement Of A Performed Culture Approach And Collaborative Online International Learning In Japanese Language Practices In Higher Education, Mayu Okawara Apr 2021

Students’ Perceptions Of Effectiveness And Engagement Of A Performed Culture Approach And Collaborative Online International Learning In Japanese Language Practices In Higher Education, Mayu Okawara

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

The whole purpose of this project is to examine the Japanese language learners’ reactions to Performed Culture Approach (PCA) and Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). PCA is a language learning approach based on experiential learning, and students are asked to perform in a class. PCA has ACT classes which students are asked to perform, and FACT classes which have explanations and discussion about the grammar points. COIL can create opportunities for the students to interact with people who are living far away using online platforms. The COIL project can be fitted in PCA nicely as an additional activity during the …

Linguistic Determinants Of Formal Thought Disorder In First Episode Psychosis, Michael Mackinley, Jenny Chan, Hanna Ke, Kara Dempster, Lena Palaniyappan Apr 2021

Linguistic Determinants Of Formal Thought Disorder In First Episode Psychosis, Michael Mackinley, Jenny Chan, Hanna Ke, Kara Dempster, Lena Palaniyappan

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Aim: Thought disorder is a core feature of schizophrenia but assessment of disordered thinking is challenging, which may contribute to the paucity of mechanistic understanding of disorganization in early psychosis. We studied the use of linguistic connectives in relation to clinically quantified dimensions of thought disorder using automated speech analysis in untreated, first episode psychosis (FEPs) and healthy controls (HCs). Methods: 39 treatment-naïve, actively psychotic FEPs and 23 group matched HCs were recruited. Three one-minute speech samples were induced in response to photographs from the Thematic Apperception Test and speech was analysed using COH-METRIX software. Five connectives variables from the …

Treaty Stories: Reclaiming The Unbroken History Of Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Sovereignty, Margaret Huettl Apr 2021

Treaty Stories: Reclaiming The Unbroken History Of Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Sovereignty, Margaret Huettl

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Ojibwe leaders negotiated treaties with the United States amid nineteenth-century encroachments on their territory. These treaties, which were more than tools of dispossession, enfolded and extended aadizookanag (sacred stories) in agreements that embodied Ojibwe relationships with land, language, sacred history, ceremony, and kin. Federal and state policy makers, fueled by the desire for Indian land and resources, attempted to unravel these relationships in the decades that followed. By continuing to live out through labor and stories their relationships with the woods, waters, and manoomin (wild rice) beds of Anishinaabewaki, the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibweg kept their treaties and their sovereignty …
