Telehealth Best Practice: A Call For Standards Of Care, Donna S. Sheperis, Arielle Smith

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

Teletherapy is an approach to working with clients that mental health providers have used in some form for years. However, the onset of COVID forced the provision of therapy into teletherapy almost exclusively for a period of time. Currently, mental health providers conducting therapy virtually are not required to be trained in telehealth and are operating without consistent uniform standards of practice. This manuscript pulls from the current literature and guidelines across counseling, psychology, psychiatry, family therapy, and social work to provide a Proposed Standards of Practice for Telehealth. Such standards benefit mental health counselor by grounding practice in common …

Limbic Morphometry In Individuals With Schizophrenia And Their Nonpsychotic Siblings, Rachael Olivia Slate Jun 2021

Limbic Morphometry In Individuals With Schizophrenia And Their Nonpsychotic Siblings, Rachael Olivia Slate

Theses and Dissertations

The limbic system is hypothesized to play a critical role in pathophysiology of schizophrenia, with abnormalities thought to contribute to the expression of various aspects of the cognitive deficits and clinical symptoms. Psychosis is understood as highly heritable and family members, specifically non-affected siblings, while not displaying overt signs of the disorder, often exhibit features similar to those observed in patients, though to a lesser degree. The overarching aim of this project was to investigate the integrity of limbic circuitry in a sample of patients with schizophrenia and their non-affected siblings and examine its potential relationship with various clinical features …

Merging Motherhood And Doctoral Studies: An Autoethnography Of Imperfectly Weaving Identities, Vicki L. Schriever Dr Jun 2021

Merging Motherhood And Doctoral Studies: An Autoethnography Of Imperfectly Weaving Identities, Vicki L. Schriever Dr

The Qualitative Report

In this autoethnography I share my lived experiences of merging motherhood and doctoral studies and reveal the journey of imperfectly weaving the identities of mother, wife, doctoral student, and academic. I present seven vignettes to provide glimpses of experience and a window into not only the challenges and tensions of intersecting motherhood and doctoral studies, but to also share the joys, strengths, and benefits of embracing these multiple identities. The literature and autoethnographic accounts offer insights into the contradiction that is mothering during doctoral studies, as academic mothers simultaneously carry guilt and gratitude, and acknowledge the sacrifice and privilege that …

Discursive Psychology For Applied Qualitative Research, Jessica N. Lester, Michelle O'Reilly Jun 2021

Discursive Psychology For Applied Qualitative Research, Jessica N. Lester, Michelle O'Reilly

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, we offer discursive psychology (DP) as a particularly useful analytic approach for engaging in applied research. We begin by overviewing the broad area of discourse analysis and then more specifically describe the contours of discursive psychology. Drawing upon a secondary, shared dataset, we provide a general discussion of the analytic process for conducting a DP informed analysis and offer some example findings. Notably, we highlight the limitations of doing DP work when working with a secondary data set and point also toward the possibilities and opportunities.

Dialogue Et Discours Attributif Dans Un Barrage Contre Le Pacifique De Marguerite Duras, Rabia Maaroufi Jun 2021

Dialogue Et Discours Attributif Dans Un Barrage Contre Le Pacifique De Marguerite Duras, Rabia Maaroufi

Dirassat

This article is a study of attributive discourse through the work of Marguerite Duras. The author proposes an analysis based on the variety of expressive verbs and the dominance of the neutral verb in the novel. The article also explores the notion of non-communication and conversation. Drawing up a complete picture of a colonial life perceived as a positive vision of French colonialism, dialogue and discourse symbolize the vanity of the characters' efforts to get out of their condition.

Aménagement Sociolinguistique De L'Espace Urbain Au Maroc, Amina Saoussany Jun 2021

Aménagement Sociolinguistique De L'Espace Urbain Au Maroc, Amina Saoussany

Dirassat

The sociolinguistic configuration of Morocco reveals that Morocco is a multi-lingual country. Many languages coexist in it. They are of unequal importance, though, the language-field prevailing in Morocco is characterized by the prevalence of an array of languages and dialects (cf Abbassi, 1977; Boukous, 1979; Gravel, 1979; Bentahila, 1983; Ennaji, 1991...). This field remains highly distinct from the multi-racial mosaic finding form in some countries like(...) Cameroon or Tanzania (El Gherbi 1993:13). It produces an area where the confrontation of historical and language factors results into the coexistence of certain dialects. It also contributes to the evolution of some languages …

نحو نحو وظيفي للخطاب لسيمون ديك, ربيعة العربي

Dirassat

The present article seeks to shed light on a fundamental issue in contemporarydiscourse, namely, the issue of functionalgrammar. It argues that Speech Interaction Model, Dynamic Discourse Models, Career Perspectives of Discourse, Comprehensive Rhetoric Decisions: Space, Event, Speech Type Selection, Speech Style Selection, Speech World Mode, Speech Achievement... are components that should be invoked in order to contribute to this grammatical model. This integration mainly serves to avoid the disintegration of speech in the form of words and sentences as it may not reflect natural language. The latter is replete with evidence showing that speech is a social and interactive event …

New Representations Of Difference: Mexican Filmmakers In New York City., Luis B. Quesada Nieto Jun 2021

New Representations Of Difference: Mexican Filmmakers In New York City., Luis B. Quesada Nieto

CUNY Mexican Studies Institute

This essay comments on recent cinematographic productions that explore the complex links between Mexico and New York as part of the ʻMexico on the Hudsonʼ Online Film and Conversational Series, organized by the Mexican Studies Institute at City University of New York and the New York based non-profit media arts organization Cinema Tropical. The reflection takes the films I’m leaving now (Lindsey Cordero and Armando Croda 2019), On the Seventh Day (Jim Mackay 2018), and La Ciudad (David Riker 1998) as a sample that exemplifies a cultural and political phenomenon in which the mediated representation of contemporary minorities has been …

Making Space For Support: An Exploratory Analysis Of Pandemic-Response Mutual Aid Platforms, Tiffany Knearem, Jeongwon Jo, Chun-Hua Tsai, John Millar Carroll Jun 2021

Making Space For Support: An Exploratory Analysis Of Pandemic-Response Mutual Aid Platforms, Tiffany Knearem, Jeongwon Jo, Chun-Hua Tsai, John Millar Carroll

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in an era of unprecedented hardship across the United States. In response, local community members leveraged mutual aid as a form of citizen-based, peer-to-peer care. In this paper, we are interested in teasing out significant design features that support the facilitation of mutual aid on online platforms. To this end, we conducted a scenario-based claims analysis of the two most widely used platforms for mutual aid, based on three primary user groups. Our analysis suggests that design for mutual aid platforms considers features which support request standardization and balanced visibility alongside validation and conversational interaction.

Longitudinal Trauma Treatment Outcomes In An Immigrant And Refugee Sample, Shuen-En Ho

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Refugee and immigrant populations are at an increased risk of having posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and exhibit a significant amount of variance in trauma treatment outcomes that may be impacted by sociocultural factors. This study examines the impact of demographic variables on treatment outcome and trajectory of PTSD symptoms in a clinic setting with trauma-focused treatments in refugee/immigrant and general populations. Data was collected from the electronic medical record at the Harborview Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress. A total of 817 participants completed intake, 58 of which self-identified as immigrant/refugee. One-way ANOVAs were conducted to examine group differences …

Late Language Emergence: A Literature Review, Peyman Nouraey, Mohammad A. Ayatollahi, Marzieh Moghadas Jun 2021

Late Language Emergence: A Literature Review, Peyman Nouraey, Mohammad A. Ayatollahi, Marzieh Moghadas

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Infants usually say their first word at the age of 12 months; subsequently, within the next 6–12 months, they develop a vocabulary of approximately 50 words, along with the ability to make two-word combinations. However, late talkers (LTs) demonstrate delayed speech in the absence of hearing impairments, cognitive developmental issues or relevant birth history. The prevalence of late language emergence (LLE) in toddlers is reported to be 10–15%. Studies of LTs are both theoretically and clinically significant. Early diagnosis and clinical intervention may result in relatively stable speech capabilities by the early school years. The present article aimed to review …

An Autoethnographic Study Of My Student And Teacher Experiences In First-Year Composition ( Fyc ) In Ghana: ( Re ) Developing More Inclusive Pedagogies In Fyc In The U.S., Eric Nuamah Korankye

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I discuss the importance of culturally-responsive pedagogies in writing programs in multicultural classrooms, especially in the United States (U.S.) where student demographics are gradually shifting from the former U.S. dominance to a more heterogeneous learning community. The study examines the ways teachers of first-year composition (FYC) in the U.S. can reimagine composition studies outside the U.S. and practice inclusivity through the design of internationalized inclusive pedagogies for first-year composition classrooms. I share stories of my experiences of first-year composition (also called Communication Skills) from my roles as a student and teaching assistant in KNUST-Ghana. Through this narration …

Consistency And Inconsistency In Caregiver Reporting Of Vocabulary, Sudha Arunachalam, Valeryia Avtushka, Rhiannon Luyster, Whitney Guthrie

Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators

Vocabulary checklists completed by caregivers are a common way of measuring children’s vocabulary knowledge. We provide evidence from checklist data from 31 children with and without autism spectrum disorder. When asked to report twice about whether or not their child produces a particular word, caregivers are largely consistent in their responses, but where they are inconsistent, these inconsistencies affect verbs more than nouns. This difference holds both for caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder and caregivers of typically-developing children. We suggest that caregivers may be less sure of their child’s knowledge about verbs than nouns. This data converges with …

Revenge Of The Fallen, Mary Oves

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

I stared in horror. “What did you do?” I had just arrived home from errands to what looked like a culinary bludgeoning. A sink filled with pots and pans, dishes covered in cement-hardened egg vomit, and coffee mugs filled with solidified gray-flecked bacon grease. Toast crumbs flecked the counters, butter splotched the surfaces, and bacon grease spittles covered the stovetop grates, the hood, the microwave and the backsplash.
