The Problem Of Intentionality And Implicit Interpretation In Communication: Pragmatic Approach, مليكة بلقاسمي, صالح مسعود
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
If Pragmatism is an in-depth knowledge of the components of the discourse process, through knowledge of the methods and mechanisms by which sayings are formulated and interpreted, and if language is a key element in forming discourse to achieve communication. The biggest challenge facing Pragmatism is describing the process of interpretation, adjusting concepts, and defining the mechanisms to reach the intention of communicating any saying, and among these concepts the implications of saying.
Since the discourse was originally conducted through linguistic and non-linguistic elements, the efforts of the Pragmatic researchers were distributed in order to create general laws for …

Significance Is The Weakness Point Of Modern Linguistic Research, مليـكة بلقاسمي
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
The semantic theory in circulation is not sufficient despite the numerous attempts to present a theory that accommodates the semantic level, as its procedural concepts and analytical tools did not meet this level and did not contain it, as many of the mothers of books in linguistics that have appeared in the last thirty years - which are the most influential literature - semantics do not pay attention to interest such as American linguistics, for example, which have been adopted for a long time A far cry from the principle that language should be analyzed without meaningful consideration

The Formative Structuralist Approach: Foundations, Terminology And Concepts, عمر العنبر
The Formative Structuralist Approach: Foundations, Terminology And Concepts, عمر العنبر
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
The Formative Structuralist Approach is premised on the idea of studying the mechanisms of constructing literary texts. In analyzing literary texts, formative structuralism is fundamentally characterized by integrating the internal and external systems of analysis. This approach came in response to criticisms levelled at Formal Structuralism especially in regards to the issue of overemphasis on the linguistic part of analysis. By contrast, The Formative Structuralist Approach benefits from the socio-historical aspects as a way to understand the ideological content embedded within literary texts. This approach employs four elements of analysis, which are: semantic segmentation, comprehension and interpretation, comprehensiveness and harmony, …

The Mental Spaces And The Construction Of Meaning: Metaphor And Metaphor Is A Model, غسان الشمري
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
This research is devoted to one of the most important theories of cognitive significance: the theory of mental spaces, as developed by G. Fauconnier [1984] (1994) and (1997) in particular. It is a theory that language is concerned with the building of meaning directly in context; that is, sentences can not be analyzed in isolation from speech. The semantics, traditionally considered to be concerned with the meaning of sentences in context, can not Separated from pragmatics, which means the contextual sense of sentences, and the building of meaning is context-driven and therefore subject to the information of a particular situation. …

What An Ethics Of Discourse And Recognition Can Contribute To A Critical Theory Of Refugee Claim Adjudication: Reclaiming Epistemic Justice For Gender-Based Asylum Seekers, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Abstract: Using examples drawn from gender-based asylum cases, this chapter examines how far recognition theory (RT) and discourse theory (DT) can guide social criticism of the judicial processing of women’s applications for protection under the Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees (1951) and subsequent protocols and guidelines put forward by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). I argue that these theories can guide social criticism only when combined with other ethical approaches. In addition to humanitarian and human rights law, these theories must rely upon ideas drawn from distributive, compensatory, and epistemic justice. Drawing from recent …

As adaptive systems, kinship and its accompanying rules have co-evolved with elements of complex societies, including wealth inheritance, subsistence, and power relations. Here we consider an aspect of kinship evolution in the Austronesian dispersal that began from about 5500 BP in Taiwan, reaching Melanesia about 3200 BP, and dispersing into Micronesia by 1500 BP. Previous, foundational work has used phylogenetic comparative methods and ethnolinguistic information to infer matrilocal residence in proto-Austronesian societies. Here we apply Bayesian phylogenetic analyses to a data set on Austronesian societies that combines existing data on marital residence systems with a new set of ethnographic data, …

Politeness Violated: A Study Of Selected Tweets By Donald Trump, Khalid Al-Shaikhli, Mohammad Al-Santareesi
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
Social media, Twitter in particular, have been a tool used by politicians to voice their thoughts and make a stand. Political figures sometimes use social media, including Twitter, as an instrument to distort the face of their rivals by employing linguistic impoliteness. The present study aims to analyze some of President Donald Trump’s impolite tweets. Methodologically, Brown and Levinson’s (1987) model of politeness is taken as the main reference of understanding and explaining the face-threatening acts that target the addressee’s face, and Culpeper’s (1996) framework to classify impoliteness strategies. The data are in the form of Trump’s tweets. The selected …

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
In practice, the analysis of sustainable development level of organizations can be carried out using different approaches. At the moment, there are more than twenty methods of numerical integrated assessment of the financial conditions of the organizations that can be indicated to the level of sustainable development. At the same time, such models are developed for economic conditions that are significantly different from those prevailing in Russia. Therefore, Russian organizations are faced with the task of choosing the optimal approach for evaluating sustainable development levels that are suitable with its economic conditions. One of these approaches is the assessment of …

The masters of eloquence agreed willingly from the first instance that this revelation is superior and nothing can be superior to it, because they found words are selected with meticulous precision and no word can be replaced with another. Moreover, there is no unessential word in the Qur’an that is meaningless; no word repeats an already expressed meaning, and there is no word repeated only for emphasis without rendering a new meaning. This is because, there cannot exist one single wordused to render a certain meaning whereas there is another thatcanrender it more precisely, neither in the same language nor in …

“Tied To The Land”: Pipelines, Plains And Place Attachment, Christina E. Dando
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
Since first proposed, the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines have been extensively covered by the media, shaping readers’ perceptions of the pipelines, as well as perceptions of the places and peoples impacted by them. Using critical discourse analysis, this paper examines the media coverage, their Plains descriptions, and expressions of place attachment. Through the media’s use of “place talk,” it presents a hybrid Plains: placeless, yet with a strongly place-attached population who are “tied to the land.” As conflicts over environmental and energy projects become increasingly contentious, place and place attachment are important for understanding the conflicts and potentially …

Personal Pronoun Errors In Form Versus Meaning Produced By Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emily Zane, Rhiannon Luyster, Sudha Arunachalam
Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators
The current study investigates whether the types of pronominal errors children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) make are different from those of their TD peers at similar stages of language development. A recent review about language acquisition in ASD argues that these children show relative deficits in assigning/extending lexical meaning alongside relative strengths in morpho-syntax (Naigles & Tek, 2017). Pronouns provide an ideal test case for this argument because they are marked both for grammatical features (case) and features that reflect qualities of the referent itself (gender and number) or the referent’s role in conversation (person). The form-meaning hypothesis predicts …
Relation Between A Systematic Analysis Of Spelling And Orthographic And Phonological Awareness Skills In First Grade Children, Victoria Henbest
Relation Between A Systematic Analysis Of Spelling And Orthographic And Phonological Awareness Skills In First Grade Children, Victoria Henbest
Victoria S. Henbest Publications
As an initial step in determining whether a spelling error analysis might be useful in measuring children's linguistic knowledge, the relation between the frequency of types of scores from a spelling error analysis and children's performance on measures of phonological and orthographic pattern awareness was examined. The spellings of first-grade children with typical spoken language skills were scored using the Spelling Sensitivity System (Masterson & Apel, 2010a); words were parsed into elements based on phonemes and then assigned a score based on the linguistic skills represented in the spelling. The children also completed more traditional measures of phonological and orthographic knowledge: …

Directed Graphs Of The Finite Tropical Semiring, Caden G. Zonnefeld
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The focus of this paper lies at the intersection of the fields of tropical algebra and graph theory. In particular the interaction between tropical semirings and directed graphs is investigated. Originally studied by Lipvoski, the directed graph of a ring is useful in identifying properties within the algebraic structure of a ring. This work builds off research completed by Beyer and Fields, Hausken and Skinner, and Ang and Shulte in constructing directed graphs from rings. However, we will investigate the relationship (x, y)→(min(x, y), x+y) as defined by the operations of tropical algebra and applied to tropical semirings.

Developing An Angled Perspective As Teacher Educators: Using Narrative Reflection To Disrupt The Funding Of Identity In Teacher Education, Brittany A. Aronson, Esther A. Enright, Tasneem Amatullah
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
Building capacity in teachers to teach students skillfully and respectfully across the diversity gap is complex work that requires teachers to learn to see with what we term as angled perspective. If an angled perspective is learnable, then it is teachable. Using our narratives as religiously and ethnically diverse women teacher educators, we share through our own learning and growth, how this type of analysis can contribute to coalitional building for teacher education, and thus K-12 teachers. Through our conceptualization of identity theory, positionality, and intersectionality, we argue angled perspectives contribute to solidarity work in education. We share implications …
