Legal Obstacles Of Detainees In For-Profit Immigration Detention Facilities, Catalina Miller-Booth May 2021

Legal Obstacles Of Detainees In For-Profit Immigration Detention Facilities, Catalina Miller-Booth

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In an effort to reshape the US correctional system, one of President Joe Biden’s first executive orders ended future contracts between the Department of Justice (DOJ) and private prison corporations. Symbolic at best, this left in place the biggest money-maker of the private prison system, private immigration detention facilities. The contracts that guide US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities favor profit over detainee well-being. This research showcases the poor quality of private immigration detention facilities with a focus on access to legal representation. With financial and physical barriers preventing detainees from receiving legal help, the US detention system works …

Telling The Story On Your Timesheets: A Fee Examiner's Tips For Creditors' Lawyers And Bankruptcy Estate Professionals, Nancy B. Rapoport

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

This short (approx. 5,000 words) essay, which forms the basis of a keynote address to the Federal Bar Association that I’m doing next month, discusses how much of a lawyer’s embedded assumptions and cognitive errors can come across in something as simple as a time entry on a bill. So much can be revealed about how a lawyer views himself or herself in society and about the lawyer’s relationship with the client that it’s worth examining what we can find when we look at legal bills. One note, though: my writing style is informal and distinctive in that regard (especially …

How do single mother college students experience their interactions with faculty? What institutional systems are in place that pose the biggest barriers to persistence and degree completion for single mother college students? A phenomenological qualitative …

Battling Youth Unemployment In France: Can Macron Put Young People To Work?, Adriana C. Bolivar

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

High unemployment has been a persistent struggle for the French economy, especially over the last 30 years under presidents Mitterrand, Chirac, Sarkozy, Hollande, and now Macron. In recent years, this problem has particularly plagued young workers making them the “lost generation” of Europe. This paper studies the history of youth unemployment in France and assesses the impact of government policies and cultural norms on young workers. Additionally, it highlights the trade-off between workers’ rights and economic growth in an attempt to draw attention to the importance of culture and context in development.

The factors that have driven French structural youth …

Redai: A Machine Learning Approach To Cyber Threat Intelligence, Luke Noel

Masters Theses, 2020-current

The world is continually demanding more effective and intelligent solutions and strategies to combat adversary groups across the cyber defense landscape. Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) is a field within the domain of cyber security that allows for organizations to utilize threat intelligence and serves as a tool for organizations to proactively harden their defense posture. However, there is a large volume of CTI and it is often a daunting task for organizations to effectively consume, utilize, and apply it to their defense strategies. In this thesis we develop a machine learning solution, named RedAI, to investigate whether open-source intelligence (OSINT) …

Police Misconduct & Qualified Immunity: Reimagining "We The "People" Conference Introduction, Sarah R. Guidry

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

The killing of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, sparked nationwide protests and rekindled the national debate concerning the use and misuse of physical violence by law enforcement officers in Black communities. It also reinforced the need for greater police accountability. The public also raised concerns about the way officers responded to these public protests, primarily led by black protestors. As a result of this data, these events, and in observance of Black History Month 2021, on Thursday, February 4, 2021, The Earl Carl Institute for Legal & Social Policy partnered with Texas …

Island Paradise To Urban Streets: Identifying The Effects Of Military Forced Displacements On Indigenous Islanders, Alexandria Mckinnell May 2021

Island Paradise To Urban Streets: Identifying The Effects Of Military Forced Displacements On Indigenous Islanders, Alexandria Mckinnell

Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses

During the twentieth century, indigenous islanders across the world were forcibly removed from their native lands by Western powers for militarily advantageous reasons. The Bikinians’ removal is the most notorious case of military forced displacement, but many other island communities faced the same fate during the superpower struggles of World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. This study analyzes two documented cases of military expulsions of indigenous islanders, the Bikinians and the Chagossians. I created a matrix analyzing the common cultural experiences shared by both communities as a result of their expulsions and how those effects persist …
