Many human activities rely on accurate knowledge of the sea surface dynamics. This is especially true during storm events, when wave-current interactions might represent a leading order process of the upper ocean. In this study, we assess and analyze the impact of including three wave-dependent processes in the ocean momentum equation of the Met Office North West European Shelf ocean-wave forecasting system on the accuracy of the simulated surface circulation. The analysis is conducted using ocean currents and Stokes drift data produced by different implementations of the coupled forecasting systems to simulate the trajectories of surface (iSphere) and 15 m …

Across The River: Ferries As A Vehicle For Exploring Riverborderscapes, Eva Mcgrath

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis uses the concept of the riverborderscape to provide new understandings of watery geographies, borders and landscape. This is a spatial and conceptual term used to explore the space of the river through a holistic approach, focusing upon the materialities, experiences and narratives that shape, emerge within and construct this space. These ideas are applied in relation to three rivers that form an everyday border between places at different scales in the South West of England: the River Tamar (regional), River Torridge (district) and Helford River (parish). Research is situated on and across the river, through the routes of …

New Algorithm For Optimised Fitting Of Dic Data To Crack Tip Plastic Zone Using The Cjp Model, B Yang, Z Wei, Fa Díaz, Z Liao, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The work presented in this paper provides guidance in optimally determining the appropriate fitting region used in digital image correlation (DIC) when fitting a crack tip field model to DIC data. In this work, the technique is applied to the CJP crack tip field model and uses the Levenberg-Marguardt (L-M) iterative method to solve for the crack tip position. This is combined with an error analysis of the main term of the Williams series expansion for crack tip stresses and the extrapolation of Saint-Venant’s principle to determine the optimum fitting region for use in DIC fit with the multi-parameter solution …

AbstractUltra high pressure (UHP) metamorphism observed in continental terranes implies that continental crust can subduct to ~40 kbar before exhuming to the surface. This process is one of the least understood and widely debated parts of the orogenic cycle. The dominantly felsic composition of UHP continental terranes means that many petrology‐based techniques for determining peak pressures and temperatures are often not possible. In such cases, the detection of UHP conditions depends on the preservation of coesite, a rarely preserved mineral in exhumed UHP terranes as it rapidly transforms to quartz on decompression. Consequently, the qualitative identification of palisade quartz microstructures …

The Challenges Of Engaging Island Communities: Lessons On Renewable Energy From A Review Of 17 Case Studies, Gina Kallis, Phedeas Stephanides, Etienne Bailey, Patrick Devine-Wright, Konstantinos Chalvatis, Ian Bailey

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Islands have attracted growing attention as sites of renewable energy generation, both for generating commercial low-carbon energy and to improve local energy conditions. However, significant challenges exist in achieving fair distribution in the benefits and costs of developments located on or around islands and in engaging local communities on proposals for installations. A broad literature exists on the merits of different community engagement techniques but important gaps remain in understandings of the particular challenges of engaging with island communities on energy issues. Based on a thematic literature review, this article examines general principles and considerations for community engagement on energy …

Visual Anthropological Methods In Earthquake Risk Communication: A Transdisciplinary Approach, Johanna Ickert Jan 2021

Visual Anthropological Methods In Earthquake Risk Communication: A Transdisciplinary Approach, Johanna Ickert

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Increases in disaster losses, in combination with emerging cascading crises, are provoking a fundamental rethinking of prevailing disaster risk reduction measures, including risk communication principles and practices. The resulting paradigm shift towards participation, action, and prevention is firmly outlined in the Sendai Framework’s call for (1) more people-centred approaches and (2) the broader use of innovative information and communication technology (ICT). However, this call raises many epistemological and methodological challenges and open questions about how hazard scientists will translate these novel requirements into their daily research practice. This thesis presents a practice-led enquiry dedicated to exploring the potential of audiovisual …

An Online Museum Of Stories: Literary Travel Writing For Cultural Tourism Development, C Mansfield, J Potočnik Topler Jan 2021

An Online Museum Of Stories: Literary Travel Writing For Cultural Tourism Development, C Mansfield, J Potočnik Topler

Plymouth Business School

With rising tourism interest in cultural heritage, destination management organisations, museums and other cultural institutions are seeking methods of unlocking the intangible cultural heritage of local residents and sharing that before it is lost. This is specific knowledge of the uses and practices of disappearing spaces in towns, of plants and their uses as foodstuffs, and in clothing and of work practices that were more in-tune with local, sustainable production. This contribution outlines new methods for building the ethnographic museum as a museum of stories, and proposes a model that explores narrative through literary travel writing for a new public.

An Analytical Model For Loop Tiling Transformation, V Kelefouras Jan 2021

An Analytical Model For Loop Tiling Transformation, V Kelefouras

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Loop tiling is a well-known loop transformation that enhances data locality in memory hierarchy. In this paper, we initially reveal two important inefficiencies of current analytical loop tiling models and we provide the theoretical background on how current analytical models can address these inefficiencies. To this end, we propose a new analytical model which is more accurate that the existing ones. We showcase, both theoretically and experimentally, that the proposed model can accurately estimate the number of cache misses for every generated tile size and as a result more efficient tile sizes are opted. Our evaluation results provide high cache …

Memories about the spatial environment, such as the locations of foraging patches, are expected to affect how individuals move around the landscape. However, individuals differ in the ability to remember spatial locations (spatial cognitive ability) and evidence is growing that these inter-individual differences influence a range of fitness proxies. Yet empirical evaluations directly linking inter-individual variation in spatial cognitive ability and the development and structure of movement paths are lacking. We assessed the performance of young pheasants ( Phasianus colchicus ) on a spatial cognition task before releasing them into a novel, rural landscape and tracking their movements. We quantified …

Wave Modulation Of Flows On Open And Closed Reefs, M Lindhart, Js Rogers, Sa Maticka, Cb Woodson, Sg Monismith Jan 2021

Wave Modulation Of Flows On Open And Closed Reefs, M Lindhart, Js Rogers, Sa Maticka, Cb Woodson, Sg Monismith

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Using observations, numerical models, and theory, we explore a framework to classify reefs as open or closed based on their dynamics. While the concepts of open and closed reefs are used widely in studies of coral reef hydrodynamics and are generally based on geometry, there is no consensus on what qualifies as open and closed. With observations from Ofu, American Samoa, we show that the reef flat exhibits two different dynamical regimes depending on tidal and wave forcing. Flow over this reef flat resembles a classic one‐dimensional barrier reef flow during low tide, where wave setup creates a cross‐reef pressure …

How Consistent Are Estimates Of Roughness Parameters On A Rough Coral Reef?, M Lindhart, Sg Monismith, A Khrizman, D Mucciarone, R Dunbar

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Coral reefs are hydrodynamically rough, creating turbulent boundary layers that transport and mix various scalars that impact reef processes and also can be used to monitor reef health. Often reef boundary layer characteristics derived from a single instrument are assumed to accurately represent the study site. This approach relies on two assumptions: first, that the boundary layer is relatively homogeneous across the area of interest, and second, that two instruments displaced in space or with different spatiotemporal resolution would produce similar results when sampling the same flow. We deployed four velocimeters over a 15 × 20 m reef at 10 …

Facing Up To Climate Change: Community Composition Varies With Aspect And Surface Temperature In The Rocky Intertidal, A. Amstutz, L. B. Firth, J. I. Spicer, M. E. Hanley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Marine rocky intertidal organisms are amongst those most affected by climate change with regional distributional changes observed for many species. Although often ascribed to increased sea surface temperatures, precise assessment of the local habitat conditions underpinning observed and predicted changes in community assembly is lacking. Here we examine how aspect (i.e. north-south orientation) affects intertidal community composition and how rock surface temperatures and stress responses of two dominant grazer species (Patella spp.) elucidate emergent differences. We quantified year-round temperature variation and surveyed intertidal community composition on paired natural rock gullies with Equator- (EF) and Pole-facing (PF) surfaces. We also investigated …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Data that can be used to monitor biodiversity through time are essential for conservation and management. The reef-forming worm, Sabellaria alveolata (L. 1767) is currently classed as ‘Data Deficient’ due to an imbalance in the spread of data on its distribution. Little is known about the distribution of this species around Ireland. Using data archaeology, we collated past and present distribution records and discovered that S. alveolata has a discontinuous distribution with large gaps between populations. Many regions lack data and should be targeted for sampling. Biodiversity surveys revealed that S. alveolata supported diverse epibiotic algal communities. Retrograding (declining) reefs …

A comprehensive in situ dataset of chlorophyll a (Chl a; N = 18,001), net primary production (NPP; N = 165) and net community production (NCP; N = 95), were used to evaluate the performance of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on Aqua (MODIS-A) algorithms for these parameters, in the South Atlantic Ocean, to facilitate the accurate generation of satellite NCP time series. For Chl a, five algorithms were tested using MODIS-A data, and OC3-CI performed best, which was subsequently used to compute NPP. Of three NPP algorithms tested, a Wavelength Resolved Model (WRM) was the most accurate, and was therefore used …
