The gastrointestinal microbiome contains at least 100 trillion microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi), whose distribution varies from the mouth to the rectum spatially and temporally throughout one's lifetime. The microbiome benefits from advancing research due to its major role in human health. Studies indicate that its functions are immunity, metabolic processes and mucosal barrier. The disturbances of these functions, dysbiosis, influence physiology, lead to diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and colon tumorigenesis. The third most common form of cancer, colorectal cancer, is the result of many factors and genes, and although the link between dysbiosis and this type of cancer is …

Undoubtedly, the outbreak of COVID-19 still represents an overanxious event for both society and population. The fear of getting infected is ubiquitous in the time of the pandemic. The population presented worrying thoughts related to the fact that the health care system was not able to provide enough services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of the hospital beds and ventilators was insufficient in order to ensure enough care, considering the increased number of COVID-19 cases that were admitted to the hospitals. Furthermore, people were fearful about the possibility of the global economy becoming decimated. The fright and also the …

Investigation Of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Pathogenesis Of Mammalian Cells, Paige Elise Allen Oct 2021

Investigation Of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Pathogenesis Of Mammalian Cells, Paige Elise Allen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia are obligate intracellular bacteria that are transmitted by ticks during a bloodmeal to a mammalian host. Interestingly, the SFG pathogen, Rickettsia conorii, has been shown to infect and grow in macrophages with a similar efficiency as the target endothelial cell, whereas a non-human pathogenic counterpart, Rickettsia montanensis, is unable to grow within macrophages. We have since determine that this phenotype applies to other pathogenic and non-human pathogenic Rickettsia, showing a correlation with growth in macrophages and rickettsial virulence. Recently, our lab has also defined host proteins that are altered during macrophage infection with …

ABSTRACT: Pneumonia is a common disease-causing hospitalization. When a healthcare-associated infection is suspected, antibiotics that provide coverage for multi-drug resistant (MDR) or extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) bacteria are frequently prescribed. Limited data is available for guidance on using meropenem as a first-line empiric antimicrobial in hospitalized patients with risk factors for MDR/ESBL bacterial infections. This was a single-center, retrospective study designed and conducted to identify factors associated with positive cultures for MDR/ESBL pathogens in hospitalized patients with suspected healthcare-associated pneumonia.Of the 246 patients, 103 patients (41%) received meropenem. Among patients prescribed meropenem, MDR/ESBL pathogens were detected in only 20 patients (13%). …

Impact Of Water, Hygiene And Sanitation On Medication Adherence Intention Among Hiv Positive Women Enrolled In Option B+ Treatment Regimen In Zambia, Jerry John Yao Nutor

Dissertations

Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV is a major problem in sub-Saharan Africa despite increasing availability of free and subsidized antiretroviral treatment (ART); MTCT can be significantly reduced provided pregnant and breastfeeding mothers adhere to prescribed regimens. Access to potable water and adequate sanitation is a major problem in low-resource countries including Zambia, located in sub-Saharan Africa. This study investigated the influence of water hygiene and sanitation (WASH) on ART adherence intention among HIV positive women enrolled in Option B+ regimen, the current World Health Organization recommendation for low resource countries.

Intein Inhibitors As Novel Antimicrobials: Protein Splicing In Human Pathogens, Screening Methods, And Off-Target Considerations, Diana A. Wall, Chunyu Wang, Kenneth Mills, Christopher W. Lennon

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Protein splicing is a post-translational process by which an intervening polypeptide, or intein, catalyzes its own removal from the flanking polypeptides, or exteins, concomitant with extein ligation. Although inteins are highly abundant in the microbial world, including within several human pathogens, they are absent in the genomes of metazoans. As protein splicing is required to permit function of essential proteins within pathogens, inteins represent attractive antimicrobial targets. Here we review key proteins interrupted by inteins in pathogenic mycobacteria and fungi, exciting discoveries that provide proof of concept that intein activity can be inhibited and that this inhibition has an effect …

Adolescent Girls And Covid-19: Mapping The Evidence On Interventions, Sarah Blake, Miriam Temin, Tara Abularrage, Nihal Said

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

With the COVID-19 crisis continuing to evolve, evidence on the effectiveness of short-term emergency-oriented responses and long-term mitigation strategies is expanding but still limited. There are, and will continue to be, substantial evidence gaps on programming to address risk across outcomes of importance to adolescent girls. More evidence is needed to slow the risks posed by the pandemic for this subpopulation, which can help guide gender- and age-responsive prevention and impact mitigation investments. Evidence from approaches delivered in other unstable contexts may offer important lessons for decision-making in the current context. Recognizing this, the Population Council conducted a structured review …

Covid-19 Vaccine Mandates—A Wider Freedom, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

President Biden has required COVID-19 vaccinations across much of the US workforce, reaching nearly 100 million workers. Opponents call it unconstitutional, a violation of personal freedom, and even “un-American.” The truth is that vaccine mandates are lawful and deeply entrenched in US history and values. They constitute a “wider freedom” so that everyone in society can feel safer where they work, learn, worship, and live.

Assemblages Of Acari In Shallow Burials: Mites As Markers Of The Burial Environment, Of The Stage Of Decay And Of Body‑Cadaver Regions, Jas K. Rai, Brian J. Pickles, M. Alejandra Perotti

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

The burial of a cadaver results in reduced arthropod activity and disruptions in colonisation patterns. Here, the distribution and diversity of mite taxa was studied across decomposition stages of shallowly buried pig carcasses (Sus scrofa domesticus). In total 300 mites (88 species) were collected from three pig shallow graves compared to 129 mites (46 species) from control (bare) soil samples at the same depth. A successional pattern of Acari higher taxa and families was observed, and species richness and biodiversity fluctuated throughout decomposition, whereas active decay showed the greatest biodiversity. Mesostigmata mites were the most abundant in ‘cadaver …

Educational Intervention To Enhance Staff Knowledge And Increase Awareness Regarding Risk Assessment And Personal Protective Equipment Selection To Reduce Blood And Body Fluid Exposures, Teresa Smoot

Dissertations

Accidental occupational blood borne pathogen exposures pose a great occupational risk for healthcare workers, worldwide. After an occupational exposure, there is a potential risk for transmission of blood borne infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and hepatitis C, to health care workers. Blood and body fluid exposures reported in an academic healthcare facility in Northeast Florida have been trending upward since 2015. The literature shows accidental blood borne pathogen exposures were greater among healthcare workers with little or no training in exposure prevention.
