Lockdowns, Quarantines, And Travel Restrictions, During Covid And Beyond: What’S The Law, And How Should We Decide?, Lawrence O. Gostin, Meryl Chertoff
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in vast deprivations of liberty previously unthinkable: lockdowns, business closures, travel restrictions, and quarantines. Even witnessing China’s January 2020 lockdown of 11 million people in Wuhan, it seemed wholly implausible that London, Rome, or New York would shut down. But they did, and much more. At the initial height of the pandemic in April 2020, more than 3.9 billion people, about half the world's population, were under stay-at-home orders. That same month, 43 US states were under stay-at-home orders.
What are the scientific, public health, and ethical justifications for various forms of liberty deprivations? Are they …

Using The Seventh Rib Length And Depth Measurements As A Method To Estimate Ancestry And Sex In Adults, Alexandria M. Amaki
LSU Master's Theses
This study tested the correlation of dimensions of the left seventh rib (L7) to ancestry and sex in adult humans. The first hypothesis, based on Bergmann’s theory, is that Black (African-American) individuals will have smaller L7 dimensions than White individuals (Americans of primarily European descent). The second hypothesis is that males, due to sexual dimorphism, will have larger ribs than females. 299 individuals from the Hamann-Todd Skeletal Collection were used in the study, approximately evenly distributed among sex and ancestry groups. Five variables were examined, including three measurements (length, width, and width point), and two calculations (area and ratio). A …

One need not be an ecologist to be averse to cruise ships. Simple solicitude for human health is enough. In February of 2020, millions watched in fascination as the Diamond Princess, a cruise ship holding the standard capacity of 2,666 passengers and 1,045 crewmembers, was quarantined during an outbreak of coronavirus...

Self-Protection In Cyberspace: Assessing The Processual Relationship Between Thoughtfully Reflective Decision Making, Protection Motivation Theory, Cyber Hygiene, And Victimization, C. Jordan Howell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current study, using structural equation modeling, assesses the processual relationship between thoughtfully reflective decision making (TRDM), theoretical constructs derived from protection motivation theory (PMT), cyber hygiene, and online victimization to determine the cognitive decision-making process that leads to the adoption of online self-protective behaviors, which reduces the occurrence of victimization experiences. Findings, derived from a general sample of Internet users in the United States, reveal: (1) engagement in cyber hygiene practices, as a form of target hardening, decreases Internet users’ experiences with online victimization; (2) thoughtfully reflective decision makers, in the face of cyber threats, develop higher threat appraisals …

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
January 30, 2021, marked the first anniversary of the declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) of COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). Thus far, the world has been no match for SARS-CoV-2, with more than 100 million cases and 2.5 million deaths. The US has been among the world’s poorest performers in addressing the pandemic, with more than 500 000 deaths.
Vaccines offer the best chance of returning to normal, but circulating variants pose a major obstacle, particularly the emergence of variants that are more transmissible and are developing partial resistance to vaccines against …

The Housing Market And The Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications For Las Vegas, Phoenix, Riverside, Los Angeles, Orlando, And New Orleans, Jenny Schuetz, Sarah Crump
Policy Briefs and Reports
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted virtually every part of the U.S. economy in the past year, and wreaked havoc on people’s daily lives. Housing markets are no exception. Millions of renters have fallen behind on their rent, fearing eviction while accumulating debts they cannot pay. At the same time, prices for owner-occupied housing have soared while the inventory of for-sale homes has plummeted. In this brief, we analyze several measures of housing distress from 2007 to 2019 for six metro areas, chosen based on their housing and labor market characteristics. Los Angeles, Riverside, Las Vegas, and Phoenix were among the …

Prisons in the United States have become a hotbed for spreading COVID-19 among incarcerated individuals. COVID-19 cases among prisoners are on the rise, with more than 143,000 confirmed cases to date. However, there is paucity of data addressing clinical outcomes and mortality in prisoners hospitalized with COVID-19. An observational study of all patients hospitalized with COVID-19 between March 10 and May 10, 2020 at two Henry Ford Health System hospitals in Michigan. Clinical outcomes were compared amongst hospitalized prisoners and non-prisoner patients. The primary outcomes were intubation rates, in-hospital mortality, and 30-day mortality. Multivariable logistic regression and Cox-regression models were …

Compliance With A Nurse-Driven Hypoglycemia Protocol: Time From Hypoglycemia Event To Euglycemia, Robin A. Chappell
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Hypoglycemia is a known complication of diabetes mellitus and is considered one of the top three adverse drug events by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2019) because it is common, clinically significant, measurable, and preventable.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In non-critical hospitalized adult patients on medical-surgical units with documented HGEs, how does active surveillance for strict adherence to a nurse-driven hypoglycemia protocol, compared to no surveillance, affect the time from hypoglycemia to euglycemia?
Evidence: Treatment of hypoglycemia is commonly inconsistent and prolonged; however, active surveillance and monitoring of a …

Central Asian Journal of Pediatrics
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a socially significant disease. The study studied the spontaneous and induced enhancement of cytokines IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 by blood leukocytes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It has been shown that the leading role in the formation of the inflammatory process in COPD belongs to the cytokines IL-6, IL-8. Cytokine production mainly reflects the reserve capacity of immunocompetent cells in response to pathogenic factors.

Amidst an unremitting pandemic, we have become amatuer virologists. Let's now summon our collective spirit and wipe measles from our planet. Why measles? Well, it is a dreadful and deeply impactful infection. First, it kills over 200,000 children every year. Those who survive infection often subsequently experience profound “immune amnesia” that puts them at increased risk from other infections. All of this can be prevented through safe and effective measles vaccination. It is unconscionable that more children worldwide are now dying from measles than in nearly a quarter-century. Second, thanks to our current pandemic, shared interest in virology and vaccine …

The recent global outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to all corners of the globe. The international travel ban, panic buying, and the need for self-quarantine are among the many other social challenges brought about in this new era. Twitter platforms have been used in various public health studies to identify public opinion about an event at the local and global scale. To understand the public concerns and responses to the pandemic, a system that can leverage machine learning techniques to filter out irrelevant tweets and identify the important topics of discussion on social media platforms like Twitter …

Previous studies have assessed the use of video interventions to enhance athletic performance. However, few studies have evaluated the use of video interventions to improve form in weightlifting. The present study evaluated the effects of video feedback (VF) with and without video modeling (VM) to enhance barbell squat form with novice and typically developing adults. The results showed that VF increased performance to near 100% for one participant. For the other VF increased performance to moderate levels and the addition of VF only slightly increased performance
