The Myth Of The Vanishing Race: Interpreting Historical Photographs Of Native Americans, Thomas P. Albritton
The Myth Of The Vanishing Race: Interpreting Historical Photographs Of Native Americans, Thomas P. Albritton
History Graduate Projects and Theses
Much of Indigenous peoples’ experience in America has been shaped by white settler colonialism, politics, and imperialism. The master narration and representation for the Indigenous past predominantly have been created by white men (European colonists, historians, and creators of pop culture), resulting in a myth of a vanishing race, the belief of many non-Indigenous people’s that Indigenous cultures, customs, and heritage were vanishing or have disappeared. Specifically, the Edward S. Curtis photograph titled “The Vanishing Race—Navaho,” ca. 1904 continues to be a significant propagator of misconceptions of a vanishing race or a long-forgotten people, even as those cultures, customs, and …
Radicals On The Move: French Migrants In The United States, 1850-1900, Staci L. Swiney
Radicals On The Move: French Migrants In The United States, 1850-1900, Staci L. Swiney
History Dissertations - Archive
The following dissertation examines the activities of French radical migrants within the United States from 1850-1900. This dissertation illustrates that studying French migration highlights the interconnectedness and continuities of radical movements in the United States throughout the nineteenth century. It emphasizes the many threads connecting the creation of mid nineteenth century socialist colonies like those in Texas, the Paris Commune, The First International, The Knights of Labor, The Socialists Labor Party, and the anarchist movement. French radical migrants worked hard to maintain ties to their own communities, but they also worked closely with Poles, Germans, Italians, Americans in an attempt …

Regional Disputation Between North Halmahera And West Halmahera Regencies, 2003-2010, Liliane Mojau
International Review of Humanities Studies
Ideally, the proliferation of the administrative region is aimed at improving the welfare of society. In reality, the proliferation of the administrative region often triggers the regional disputation. The regional disputation between the North Halmahera and the West Halmahera regencies is one of the cases that took a long time. There are six villages that contested in this regional disputation, namely Dum-Dum, Gamsungi/Akesahu, Akelamo Kao, Tetewang, Bobane Igo, and Pasir Putih. At first, the government of the North Halmahera and the West Halmahera regencies coordinated to settle their region boundaries. But it develops to the status issue of the six …

Assessing The Role Of The Inequitable Food Environment In The Obesity Epidemic, Samuel G. Latzsch
Assessing The Role Of The Inequitable Food Environment In The Obesity Epidemic, Samuel G. Latzsch
PCOM Capstone Projects
The prevalence of obesity has more than doubled in the United States within the past forty years, and children that are raised obese are more likely to have health complications and a shorter lifespan. The onset of the obesity epidemic coincided with numerous factors which likely played a significant role in drastically shifting the food environment and dietary habits of Americans. The food production industry notable capitalized on industrialism and innovative technology to mass produce packaged products that are energy-dense and full of preservatives to increase shelf-life duration. These measures which aimed to secure widespread food availability have resulted in …
Distinctly American: The Roots Of Secessionism And Nullification In The United States, Patrick F. Ryan
Distinctly American: The Roots Of Secessionism And Nullification In The United States, Patrick F. Ryan
History Theses
A retrospective study of the role that secessionism played throughout American history, beginning in the late 18th century. The purpose of this work is to show how John C. Calhoun's (and other Southerners') ideas and rhetoric were not novel. This paper investigates the early whispers of nullification and secessionism in the United States; the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, Essex Junto, Hartford Convention, indecision by the founders, and how they shaped later American politicians in the mid-19th century.

Archaeological Analysis Of An Early Mississippian Frontier Structure In Southwestern Virginia, Sophie Husslein
Archaeological Analysis Of An Early Mississippian Frontier Structure In Southwestern Virginia, Sophie Husslein
Honors Theses
Ely Mound (44LE12) is a significant prehistoric frontier site located in Lee County, Virginia. Frontier sites are important in understanding processes of cultural hybridity and the formation of social hierarchies. Through an analysis of artifacts recovered from a household structure during a 2019 excavation, this research explores Ely’s function on the Mississippian cultural frontier, and discusses its relationship to the Carter Robinson site located within the county (44LE10). Finally, I conclude that the occupants of Ely Mound were a local people engaging with select Mississipian cultural practices and suggest that this site could be an example of Mississippianization.

Public History: An Effort To Increase Indonesian Historical Consciousness During Covid-19 Pandemi, Abdurakhman Abdurakhman, Syahidah Sumayyah Rahman
International Review of Humanities Studies
The writing of public history has become one of the methods of history that have developed and are in great demand. The difference between history in general and public history is the selection of groups that are used as research sources. Through this research, the author find that public history can be used as a way to raise historical consciousness in Indonesia. Historical Consciousness relates to thinking of ourself in time as historical beings and being aware of belonging to a specific group with a particular history and identity. The current global pandemic presents a challenge for historians. Documenting the …

The Music Making Family: A Music Class For All Ages, Jordan Lee Slater
Masters Theses
Whereas music both unlocks and fuels devotion as well as strengthens mental faculties, whereas teamwork and shared experiences deepen familial bonds, whereas the Bible is the root of all knowledge and wisdom, the need for The Music Making Family has arisen. Colossians 3:16 states, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” The purpose of this qualitative study is to provide teachers, whether in private school, public school, a religious entity, in a standalone studio, instructional material for …
Escaping Machismo: Educating A New Generation Of Mentors For Latina Students, Nayeli Elizavet Garcia
Escaping Machismo: Educating A New Generation Of Mentors For Latina Students, Nayeli Elizavet Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
Machismo has been a traditional reality for most Latino communities for much too long and unfortunately, it does not seem to be making an exit any time soon. To serve as a counteract for machismo, this thesis encourages for Universities to add onto training programs for faculty and staff so that they can serve as mentors for future Latina students. Creating future mentors that help guide Latina students may impact Latina students and their retention rates as well as encourage them to go beyond an undergraduate degree. To serve as a mentor, staff and faculty should be educated in the …

Reframing National Women's History Month: Practicalities And Consequences, Skylar Bre’Z
Reframing National Women's History Month: Practicalities And Consequences, Skylar Bre’Z
Dissertations
This study evaluates the practicalities and consequences of designating one month (March) out of the calendar year for the commemoration of women’s history. In the 1970s and 1980s, national women’s organizations such as the Women’s Action Alliance (WAA) collaborated with the Smithsonian Institute and the Women’s History Program at Sarah Lawrence College to build programs to increase awareness of women’s history. Using an interdisciplinary approach grounded in feminist theory, media studies, and historical memory studies, this project contextualizes the commemoration through its connection to 1970s women’s activism, explores its usefulness as a tool for building educational equity, and questions its …

The Impact Of Funds Of Knowledge Instruction In Career And Technical Education Among Junior High Students: A Mixed Methods Study, Sheri D. Deaton
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to investigate students’ perceptions of their own Funds of Knowledge (FOK) and the impact that these funds have as students prepare for careers. This purpose was achieved through an embedded mixed methods design with qualitative data collection and analysis embedded within the quantitative research design. Analysis of data collected in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) classroom from the pre and post assessment instrument reveal that while direct instruction regarding FOK did not result in a statistically significant difference between the control and treatment groups, post assessment scores for participants in the …

Shattering Or Supporting Stereotypes? Examining Gender In/Equality In English Language Textbooks In Brunei, Rommel Curaming, Sharifah N. H. Alkaff
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper examines the representation of gender relations in textbooks used to teach the English language in public secondary schools in Brunei. The country is currently ranked 95th in the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s 2020 Global Gender Gap Index among 153 countries analysed. This fact seems to suggest that there is a significant gender gap existing in the country. As textbooks used in schools are considered among the most potent tools for promoting gender in/equality, they deserve to be examined in detail. Using Content Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as methods of analysis, this paper seeks to address the …

Occupied: The Civilian Experience In Montélimar, 1939-1945, Cameron Zinsou
Occupied: The Civilian Experience In Montélimar, 1939-1945, Cameron Zinsou
Theses and Dissertations
The vast literature of World War II in France contains a major gap. There is little on the daily life of civilians prior to France's defeat during the Battle of France or civilian life after the liberation of France from the German occupier. Most literature on France during the war focuses on the Vichy years from 1940-1944. This dissertation extends the timeline to encapsulate the whole war from 1939-1945. By doing so, historians can uncover other themes central to the French civilian experience besides the German presence. This dissertation shows the benefits of this chronological extension through its investigation of …
An Ethical Assessment Of Philippine Laws On National Security Through Deontological Ethics, David Joseph O. Velasco
An Ethical Assessment Of Philippine Laws On National Security Through Deontological Ethics, David Joseph O. Velasco
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
As a democratic country, the Philippines value the natural rights enshrined in the Constitution. Filipinos, particularly those who were involved in the preservation of democracy, were up in arms when the Republic Act 11479 or the Anti-Terrorism Act and formerly, the repealed Republic Act 9372 or the Human Security Act were passed. Filipinos fear that both infringe on basic human rights, such as that of right to life, liberty, and property. For this reason, there is a need to encourage research that will assess these laws concerning the national security of the country, in an ethical manner, in order to …

An Ethical Inquiry To Personhood As The Standard For Sexbot Ownership: A Response To S. Petersen, John Andrei E. Esguerra, Daniel Christopher L. Haduca, Jeulian Clarisse C. Manalo
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
In the field of robot ethics, debates about sexbots, their personhood, and their moral status continue. To provide our stance in this debate, we ask the question: Is it unethical for sexbots to be owned? This paper responds to the claims of Steve Petersen’s (2016) paper “Is it good for them too? Ethical concerns for the sexbots”, where he argues that sexbots are not wronged for performing the functions they are designed for. We respond to this claim by arguing for John Danaher’s Theory of Ethical Behaviorism (2020). If ethical behaviorism is correct in claiming that behavior is a sufficient …
Willful Ignorance, Self-Deception, And The Motivation Condition– A Reply To M. Glowicki (2018), Janne Raquel P. Matubis
Willful Ignorance, Self-Deception, And The Motivation Condition– A Reply To M. Glowicki (2018), Janne Raquel P. Matubis
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Despite being given significant attention in the philosophical literature, the account of willful ignorance is still constantly debated upon. Philosophers such as Glowicki (2018) have debated that the inconvenience of knowing the proposition is not necessary for one to be willfully ignorant because of the instances of ‘praiseworthy willful ignorance’ that he proposes. In this article, I will argue that while this is true, her account is insufficient as though it need not be inconvenient, one must still have a motive to remain willfully ignorant of the proposition. With this, I will explain the importance of the motivation condition in …

Aspen Bibliography
European aspen (Populus tremula L.) is a keystone species for biodiversity of boreal forests. Large-diameter aspens maintain the diversity of hundreds of species, many of which are threatened in Fennoscandia. Due to a low economic value and relatively sparse and scattered occurrence of aspen in boreal forests, there is a lack of information of the spatial and temporal distribution of aspen, which hampers efficient planning and implementation of sustainable forest management practices and conservation efforts. Our objective was to assess identification of European aspen at the individual tree level in a southern boreal forest using high-resolution photogrammetric point cloud …

Unto One Man’S Hand: The Power Of Portraiture Of The Favorites Of James I, Maria Rosario Katsulos
Unto One Man’S Hand: The Power Of Portraiture Of The Favorites Of James I, Maria Rosario Katsulos
SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper discusses the study and analysis of portraiture of the favorites of King James I: Esmé Stuart, Robert Carr, and George Villiers. Although famous female mistresses (such as Anne Boleyn before her queenship or Madame de Pompadour) often did wield immense political power, there is better historical documentation for the power of male favorites in politics, the military, economics, and other areas of national affairs. Studying visual primary source material allows a new perspective on contemporary thought and propaganda of the time. Certain aspects of character are better communicated through the intricate symbology of the time, and portraiture allows …
