The United States is facing a maternal health crisis with rising rates of maternal mortality and morbidity and stark disparities in maternal outcomes by race and socioeconomic status. Among the efforts to address this issue, one policy proposal is gaining particular traction: extending the period of Medicaid eligibility for pregnant women beyond 60 days after childbirth. The authors examine the legislative and regulatory pathways most readily available for extending postpartum Medicaid, including their relative political, economic, and public health trade-offs. They also review the state and federal policy activity to date and discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on …
Explanatory Necropolitics: Physicians’ Perspectives On Compliance, Culture, And Competence In The Management Of Chronic Disease, Rithvik Ramesh
Explanatory Necropolitics: Physicians’ Perspectives On Compliance, Culture, And Competence In The Management Of Chronic Disease, Rithvik Ramesh
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
In this thesis, I explore physicians’ conceptions of culture in the management of chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Physicians whom I interviewed deconstructed the challenges of compliance into coded components of knowing, wanting, and doing. This pattern creates a new form of adherent autonomy, which offers the freedom to choose as much as it surveils, expects, and moralizes “good” choices in the pursuit of good care. Consequently, adherent autonomy deprives patients of practical sovereignty and continues to objectify individuals in more indirect and ostensibly acceptable forms. While physicians’ definitions for culture ranged in scope and content, they prominently framed …
Fedaccounts: Digital Dollars, John Crawford, Lev Menand, Morgan Ricks
Fedaccounts: Digital Dollars, John Crawford, Lev Menand, Morgan Ricks
Faculty Scholarship
We are entering a new monetary era. Central banks around the world – spurred by the development of privately controlled digital currencies as well as competition from other central banks – have been studying, building, and, in some cases, issuing central bank digital currency (“CBDC”).
Although digital fiat currency is one of the hottest topics in macroeconomics and central banking today, the discussion has largely overlooked the most straightforward and appealing strategy for implementing a U.S. dollar-based CBDC: expanding access to bank accounts that the Federal Reserve already offers to a small, favored set of clients. These accounts consist of …

As the COVID-19 global pandemic ravaged the United States, exacerbating the country’s existing racial disparities, Black and brown small business owners navigated unprecedented obstacles to stay afloat. Adding even more hardship and challenges, the United States also engaged in a nationwide racial reckoning in the wake of the murder of George Floyd resulting in wide-scale protests in the same neighborhoods that initially saw a disproportionate impact of COVID-19 and harming many of the same Black and brown business owners. These business owners had to operate in an environment in which they experienced recurring trauma, mental anguish and uncertainty, along with …

The Stressors Faced By Retail Workers During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nada Elnahla, Leighann C. Neilson
AMTP Proceedings 2021
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, brick-and-mortar retail workers have been hailed as heroic frontline employees. No matter where a retail store is located or the severity of the lockdown, retail workers have many new regulations and guidelines to follow and implement in order to protect both themselves and their customers. Using a qualitative research methodology, this exploratory research focuses on how the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting drastic changes in the retail sector are affecting the workers in North America. Four main stressors are identified: fear of the unknown, fear of infection, mistreatment by consumers, and the role of the powerless …

Wine Consumer Culture Positioning: Case Of The Global Success Of Yellow Tail And Casillero Del Diablo, Samit Chakravorti
AMTP Proceedings 2021
This paper qualitatively discusses through the lens of consumer cultural positioning literature the global success of two wine brands: Yellow Tail of Casella Wines of Australia and Casillero del Diablo of Concha Y Toro of Chile. These two brands have made meaningful gains in many markets across the globe despite the high fragmentation in the world of wine and have mad themselves stand out as icons of “global” brands in the wine world. Analysis of secondary data reveals that the marketing actions of the two brands align with findings from branding literature. Both brands identified different but meaningful consumer cultural …

A sample of 1,243 adult residents of the United States provided insight into an array of issues germane to sustainability. Upon completing a 65-question survey on sustainability, each respondent placed themselves in an eco-group that they felt best corresponded to their own behavior and attitudes towards the task of keeping the planet green for ourselves, and perhaps more importantly, for our posterity. The five groups ranged from the eco-destroyer to the eco-warrior. Within the survey, each respondent provided their opinions regarding seven multi-item scales that primarily addressed green issues; some scales addressed business behavior while others addressed issues such as …

Revisiting The Beneficiaries Of The Scotus Ruling Striking Down Paspa, Sam Fullerton, Ronald Dick, Michael Mccall
AMTP Proceedings 2021
A Supreme Court ruling in 2018 essentially rendered restrictions on sports gambling to run counter to states’ rights, thus in conflict with the Constitution of the United States. As a consequence, 13 states and the District of Columbia now have legalized sports gambling. Initial research into the consequences of this ruling identified 12 potential beneficiaries. Subsequent research entailing an assessment of new literature and a survey of executive opinion involving a number of marketing executives who work within the field of sports marketing expanded the findings from the earlier study. This extension of the preliminary study found 14 beneficiaries rather …

Mind The Gap: The Effects Of Shopping Medium On Consumer Food Evaluations And Choice, Ashley M. Thomas
AMTP Proceedings 2021
Mobile grocery shopping is rapidly growing in popularity across the United States. Many retailers are responding by creating their own mobile apps to facilitate this demand. However, it is not yet clear whether consumers’ food evaluations and choices differ when grocery shopping on mobile apps as compared to traditional brick-and-mortar retail store settings. Thus, the purpose of this research is to inform both theory and practice by identifying these potential differences and examining why they may be occurring. Study 1, conducted in a retail behavioral lab, shows that shoppers were able to accurately differentiate between healthy and unhealthy food products …

Consumer Perceptions Of Podcast Advertising: Theater Of The Mind And Story Selling, M. Olguta (Olga) Vilceanu, Kristine Johnson, Alexis Burns
AMTP Proceedings 2021
COVID-19 has changed the ways in which people manage education, work, and entertainment. This study sought to identify the types of attitudes and behaviors which promote mutually rewarding connections between podcasts, audiences, and advertisers. Survey results underlined the utmost importance for the podcast advertising industry to connect and engage listeners, in order for the overall billion-dollar ad buys to have the desired effect. About two-thirds of the participants listen to 6 or more shows during an average week and prefer live-narrated ads where podcast hosts banter and tell convincing stories about their experiences with advertised products. Key findings indicate that …

Text therapy is an affordable and convenient form of counselling that allows clients to text with a Therapist. It is quite common for therapists to use emojis while talking to their clients via texts. In this study, we examine how use of emojis in the context of text therapy impacts clients’ overall counselling experience. In two studies, we show that using emojis with concise messages (vs. long messages) lead to greater clients’ overall satisfaction, higher willingness to pay, and increased positive word of mouth.

Entitled To Be Served: Does Self-Checkout Make Customers Feel Less Rewarded?, Farhana Nusrat, Yanliu Huang
AMTP Proceedings 2021
The adoption of self-service technologies (SST) has been rising over the last few years, and among different SSTs, self-checkout systems are one of the most popular options. In this study, we examine how self-checkout service impacts customers’ shopping outcomes compared to regular checkout service. We propose that self-checkout (vs. regular checkout) systems, would make customers feel less rewarded and less satisfied with their purchases. We conducted four studies to test our hypotheses and showed that self-checkout (vs. regular checkout) service makes customers feel less rewarded, less satisfied with their shopping outcomes, and less likely to return to the store. We …

Adapting To Slow-Moving Crises: The Personal Protection Equipment Supply Chain In The Time Of Covid19, Jennifer Shullih, Stephen Lemay
AMTP Proceedings 2021
In this paper, we look at the supply chain for PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. We look at the way the supply chain has responded to the pandemic, the coordination of the supply chain relative to the needs of primary users, and the consequences of its use. We find that the supply chain has continued to function more as a commercial supply chain than as an emergency supply chain largely because of a lack of centralized coordination. We include an analysis of existing concepts as they apply to this supply chain, but also incorporate preliminary results from a …

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, online purchases have become the new normal. Based on the S-O-R framework, this study proposed a model to understand consumers’ impulsive shopping behavior during post COVID-19 era in China. This study investigated the antecedents of impulsive purchase behavior, while exploring the product categories most likely to be consumed because of the pandemic. An online survey was employed using a convenience national sample frame in China. A total sample of 322 was used to test the proposed model, hypotheses and answer the research questions. Theoretically, the study provides an alternative model that explains the role of website …
Encouraging And Rewarding Customer Loyalty: Key Considerations For Sports Teams, Vassilis Dalakas, Madeleine Tseng, Joanna Melancon
Encouraging And Rewarding Customer Loyalty: Key Considerations For Sports Teams, Vassilis Dalakas, Madeleine Tseng, Joanna Melancon
AMTP Proceedings 2021
Sports is an ideal context to study loyalty because sports fans often transcend simple behavioral and affective loyalty and integrate their commitment to a team into their self-identity. Season ticket packages often serve as loyalty rewards programs, offering tiered benefits and perks to consumers in exchange for their level of patronage. This paper offers insights on the impact of various reward types on consumers’ perception of their relationship with a team. Theoretical foundations and insights from sports marketing professionals suggest that those benefits that are exclusive to a team’s season ticket holders and/or premium seat buyers, as well as social …

Effects Of Changes In Land Use Land Cover And Climate On Long-Term Total Dissolved Solids Trends In The Mid-Atlantic Region Of The United States, Melaine Edouard Kolimedje
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Mid-Atlantic region (MAR) of the U.S. is subjected to a variety of stressors that affect the headwaters of the major rivers. Some of these stressors are abandoned mine drainage, agriculture, municipal point sources, urban areas, out-of-basin diversions, competing water uses, rapid population growths in the lowlands, alterations in water availability due to climate change and habitat alteration. In addition to these regional stressors, the rapid population growths and energy sources shifting have resulted in changes in land use and land cover (LULC) over the last few decades. The interactive effects of LULC and interannual/long-term climate changes have resulted in …

A Deeper Inquiry Into The Transitional Needs Of Student Veterans, Nathan Calvin Bridendolph Jr
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous research revealed that veterans transitioning to post-secondary institutions have unique characteristics (PNPI, 2018; Wurster et al., 2013) and may suffer from a constellation of physical, psychological, and social problems that can impact their ability to perform to their full potential on campus (Ackerman et al., 2009; Alschuler & Yarab, 2016; Igielnik, 2019). Despite knowing the struggles student veterans (SVs) face when transitioning to campus, no studies were found that directly gain SVs’ input on what they believe will help their transition. The current study sought to gain a holistic perspective of SV needs by using the biopsychosocial model and …

A Web-Based Intervention Is Feasible For Supporting Weight Loss And Increased Activity In Rural Women With Arthritis, Patricia A. Hageman, Christine Eisenhauer, Joseph E. Mroz, Rebecca Johnson Beller
Journal Articles: Physical Therapy
Rural women have well documented health disparities, with higher prevalence of obesity and chronic conditions, including arthritis. Change in weight and actigraph-recorded data were examined in a subset of 63 of 82 women with physician-diagnosed arthritis who completed a 30-month web-based clinical trial. Repeated measures analyses showed women lost weight from baseline to six months, slowly regained at 18 and 30 months, ending with a lower weight than baseline F(1,62)=40.89, p<0.001, η2p =0.40. Of 53 women with complete data, activity increased at six months, decreased at 18 months, and increased at 30 months F(1,52)=4.14, p =.04, η2p=0.07. Women showed improved change in weight and activity from baseline at six, 18 and 30 months. This study adds support that web-based programs may promote weight loss and activity in a hard-to-reach, underserved population of midlife and older rural women with arthritis

Strategic Planning That Incorporates Strategic Risk, Paul C. Godfrey, John Bugalla
Strategic Planning That Incorporates Strategic Risk, Paul C. Godfrey, John Bugalla
Faculty Publications
Risk has been a fixture in the business landscape since the beginning of time. Over the years, new techniques, such as Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), have emerged to help leaders address multiple and complicated risks, but the ability to measure and therefore manage those risks are key. Today, strategic planners face an environment where certain risks are neither calculable nor transferrable. This article defines strategic risks and proposes a new tool strategy teams can use to monitor and manage these risks to their advantage: the Strategic Uncertainty Map.
