Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Air pollution is a leading public health concern around the world. Assessing the public's knowledge about air quality is critical to calibrate public health interventions. However, previous efforts to measure knowledge about air quality (AQIQ) have not relied on consistent and validated measures, thus precluding cross-country comparisons. We aimed to develop a robust scale to assess AQIQ and tested it in multiple countries.

Methods

To evaluate the psychometric properties and select the best performing items out of 10 AQIQ questions, we used methods from classical test theory and item response theory. We evaluated the scales using several scalability measures, …

Coastal areas have highly productive economic values for its residents, with huge potentials in fisheries and marine resources. The human factor with social capitals is vital potential in these coastal areas. The inhabitants work on fishing activities, intermediary traders, and other coastal related businesses. However, some of these areas are characterized with unplanned areas, poor livelihood, deteriorated buildings, with no green or public spaces. Moreover, these areas also suffer due to its far locations from cities’ centers and their eliminating from the urban development plans. In general, these problems have transformed them into coastal informal areas. Previous studies proved that …

Since it is now possible to make, in a controlled fashion, an almost unlimited variety of nanostructure shapes, it is of increasing interest to understand the forms of biological control that nanoscale shape allows. However, a priori rational investigation of such a vast universe of shapes appears to present intractable fundamental and practical challenges. This has limited the useful systematic investigation of their biological interactions and the development of innovative nanoscale shape-dependent therapies. Here, we introduce a concept of biologically relevant inductive nanoscale shape discovery and evaluation that is ideally suited to, and will ultimately become, a vehicle for machine …

Asymptomatic And Pre-Symptoms Transmission Of Covid-19 In Heterogeneous Epidemic Network, H. A. A. El-Saka, Ayman Al-Dmour, Ibrahim Obaya

Information Sciences Letters

The diversity of the spread pattern of the Corona virus is one of the most important reasons for the seriousness of the virus. Therefore, in this paper, we present a fractional mathematical SEIAS model that studies many ways of spreading (asymptomatic and pre-symptoms transmission) with the hypothesis of the spread of the virus in a heterogeneous network of individuals. The system consists of nonlinear equations which formed in fractional order. And it turns out that the system has two equilibrium positions (free and endemic positions). We also calculated the disease prevalence threshold (R) within the network. The condition for the …

On Generalize L-Moments Method And Application On Control Chart For Monitoring Fractional, Rates And Proportions Data, Enayat M. Abd Elrazik, Mahmoud M. Mansour

Information Sciences Letters

This paper proposes GL-moments’ method as a generalization to the TL-moments and the L-moments methods. Population GL-moments in terms of the quantile function and shifted Jacobi polynomials were defined. Some relations between GL-moments depending on Jacobi Polynomials were also derived. Furthermore, interpretation of the first two population GL-moments by U-statistics was introduced. Also, we obtained two expressions to estimate the population GL-moments: the first expression, which depends on Downton’s estimator, is a nearly unbiased estimator. Finally, to avoid an upper control limit exceeding one in p-chart, we propose a control chart based on generalized linear moments for monitoring fractional, rates …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Ciliary extracellular vesicles (ciEVs), released from primary cilia, contain functional proteins that play an important role in cilia structure and functions. We have recently shown that ciEVs and cytosolic extracellular vesicles (cyEVs) have unique and distinct biomarkers. While ciEV biomarkers have shown some interactions with known ciliary proteins, little is known about the interaction of ciEV proteins with proteins involved in ciliopathy and neurodegenerative disorders. Here, we reveal for the first time the protein-protein interaction (PPI) between the top five ciEVs biomarkers with ciliopathy and Alzheimer disease (AD) proteins. These results support the growing evidence of the critical physiological roles …
