Highlight: • Modification of radical mastectomy with flap fixation treatment in seroma production in breast cancer patients was analyzed. • The number of seromas from the drain removal time in patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy with flap fixation was reduced. Abstract: Seroma is the most common complication after mastectomy procedure. This study was conducted to analyse the treatment of flap fixation in seroma production after modified radical mastectomy in breast cancer patients. An interventional prospective clinical study in 35 female patients with breast cancer who underwent modified radical mastectomy with flap fixation in the period August-December 2018 and 35 patients …

Highlight:• Bacteriologically for colonization of ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae in cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) were analyzed. • The prevalence of ESBL producing bacteria among cockroaches in hospitals is bigger than in households. Abstract: Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) is one of the vectors in the environment that can transmit disease. Cockroaches can act as potential mechanical vectors of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Enterobacteriaceae is a gram-negative bacteria that has natural habitats in the digestive tract of humans and animals. Enterobacteriaceae that produce Extended Spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) have emerged as major pathogens in hospitals. The study analyzed the prevalence of ESBL producing bacteria in cockroaches that …

Highlight: • Differences in the efficacy of CYD-TDV versus the other TAK-003 and TV003/TV005 were discussed. • One licensed dengue vaccine is CYD-TDV (Dengvaxia). Abstract: Dengue fever is the most common tropical disease, but there still remains no specific therapy that can overcome it. Special attention needs to be paid to this disease, because there were large increases in incidence in the last decade. As an effective preventive strategy, finding a new vaccine for dengue fever with higher potentiation and efficacy is highly necessary to stop dengue transmission especially in the endemic area. Vaccine triggers an immune response, so that …

Our project is a greenhouse monitoring system. The customer states that they need a complete monitoring system for their greenhouse. There are a lot of items within the greenhouse that need to be watered at the right time and kept at a certain temperature. The customer is not always around to check the status of these items due to their busy lifestyle. They would like a system to monitor all these items so they can check it on their smartphone no matter how far away they are from the greenhouse. The customer wants this to be a low-cost and energyefficient …

Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the most predominant primary malignant tumor among worldwide, especially in China. To date, the successful treatment remains a mainly clinical challenge, it is imperative to develop successful therapeutic agents.
Methods: The anti-proliferative effect of ivermectin on ESCC is investigated in cell model and in nude mice model. Cell apoptosis was assessed using flow cytometry, TUNEL assay and western blotting. Mitochondrial dysfunction was determined by reactive oxygen species accumulation, mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP levels.
Results: Our results determined that ivermectin significantly inhibited the proliferation of ESCC cells in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, …

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship
The prenatal period represents a critical time for brain growth and development. These rapid neurological advances render the fetus susceptible to various influences with life-long implications for mental health. Maternal distress signals are a dominant early life influence, contributing to birth outcomes and risk for offspring psychopathology. This prospective longitudinal study evaluated the association between prenatal maternal distress and infant white matter microstructure. Participants included a racially and socioeconomically diverse sample of 85 mother–infant dyads. Prenatal distress was assessed at 17 and 29 weeks’ gestational age (GA). Infant structural data were collected via diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) at 42–45 weeks’ …

Glycosylation is an effective way to improve the water solubility of natural products. In this work, a novel glycosyltransferase gene (BbGT) was discovered from Beauveria bassiana ATCC 7159 and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified enzyme was functionally characterized through in vitro enzymatic reactions as a UDP-glucosyltransferase, converting quercetin to five monoglucosylated and one diglucosylated products. The optimal pH and temperature for BbGT are 35 ℃ and 8.0, respectively. The activity of BbGT was stimulated by Ca2+, Mg2+, and Mn2+, but inhibited by Zn2+. BbGT enzyme is flexible and can glycosylate a variety of substrates such as curcumin, …

Honors Projects
The college search process is an important time in the life of any student, and feeling a sense of belonging and inclusion through the admissions process is vital to ensuring student success in higher education. With COVID-19 forcing all admissions communications online, student connections were changed and student’s perception of belonging was altered. This confidential survey project used demographic, quantitative, and open-ended questions to understand student perceptions of belonging and inclusion during the online admissions process. Of 750 students contacted, 57 students responded to the demographic questions, 50 to the quantitative questions, and 17 students left in-depth responses about their …

Experiences Of African American Women Living With Herpes Simplex Virus 2, Cherlisa Jackson, Yitza A. Arcelay-Rojas
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
In the United States, the prevalence of herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) continues to be the highest among African American women. Yet the perceived benefit of discussing sexual health, as well as recognizing a need to discuss HSV-2 with a health-care provider, is a gap in research. The purpose of this interpretive qualitative study was to understand the experiences of African American women who received an asymptomatic HSV-2 diagnosis. Semistructured interviews of seven participants were used to explore the experiences of African American women diagnosed with HSV-2, including barriers and challenges of discussing HSV-2 with health-care providers. Participants highlighted that …
