Emerging Services For The Visually Impaired In Academic Libraries, Noor Abutayeh, Berta García-Orosa
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study sought to investigate access services that are presented to visually impaired users in academic libraries. There is a clear lack of digital resources and assistive technology in serving disabled/blind users in both libraries. Based on Mann-Whitney U-test results and p-value, there were similarities in website and databases accessibility and significant differences in providing some types of digital materials to visually impaired users. It is recommended that libraries have to continually adapt to the constantly turning cycles of technology in terms of major technology trends such as open-source software, mobile technology, and voice-activated technology. The world needs to …

Intentional International Presence Of United Nation's Locations, Kelsea Nicole Duvall
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
The United Nations chose specific locations to house its main headquarters and major offices. While there are many smaller regional offices of the United Nations, this focuses only on the four main offices and the Hague, which houses the International Court of Justice. The different locations of New York, the Hague, Geneva, Vienna, and Nairobi were chosen over a time period of fifty years with New York, the first permanent location, chosen in 1946, and Nairobi, the most recent addition, finalized in 1996. The locations were not chosen purely because of monetary concerns but because they met specific qualifications set …

Art And Exceptionality: Addressing Art Fear And Fear Of Difference In An Introductory Art Course, Arthur Hochman, Kelli J. Esteves
Scholarship and Professional Work – Education
University educators designed and co-taught a course which involved collaborative artmaking and learning with a community-based arts organization that serves individuals with disabilities. Their goal was to help university students examine the potential of art and how it applies to their personal and professional lives. They sought to better understand how to nurture a feeling of artistic agency in undergraduate students who do not define themselves as artists. Educators found that students benefited from an exploration of art fear through an inclusive approach to art creation.

Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring: A Patient Empowerment Project, Alison Cusmano
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Hypertension is a public health issue estimated to affect 112 million adults by 2030. Primary care patients in an outpatient clinic in Southern California with elevated blood pressure readings in the office did not have an organized system for close follow-up. The purpose of this evidence-based project (EBP) was to educate patients on self-measured blood pressure monitoring (SMBP), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), diet interventions, and healthy weight loss to improve hypertension rates. Through these interventions, patients developed an understanding of their systolic and diastolic blood pressure goals. Nurse practitioners, medical assistants, and licensed vocational nurses screened for high …

A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of Childhood Vaccination Behavior: Nash Versus Kant, Philippe De Donder, Humberto Llavador, Stefan Penczynski, John E. Roemer, Roberto Vélez
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Whether or not to vaccinate one’s child is a decision that a parent may approach in several ways. The vaccination game, in which parents must choose whether to vaccinate a child against a disease, is one with positive externalities (herd immunity). In some societies, not vaccinating is an increasingly prevalent behavior, due to deleterious side effects that parents believe may accompany vaccination. The standard game-theoretic approach assumes that parents make decisions according to the Nash behavioral protocol, which is individualistic and non-cooperative. Because of the positive externality that each child’s vaccination generates for others, the Nash equilibrium suffers from a …
Fascination With Murder: Exploring The Internal Structure Of The True Crime Community, Eric Gaither
Fascination With Murder: Exploring The Internal Structure Of The True Crime Community, Eric Gaither
Theses and Dissertations
The admiration of killers is a trait found in numerous murderers, who claimed they felt inspired to murder from previous attacks. The True Crime Community is an online community with a deep fascination and possible obsession with criminal behavior. Community members include those who display admiration for killers and those who commit copycat crimes. Unfortunately, information regarding this community is limited and often conflicting as academic studies are scarce. This thesis explores the True Crime Community culture with a content analysis of authority figures' posts from a True Crime Community forum to understand the norms of discussions and behaviors. Although …

Net-Zero Energy Districts And The Grid: An Energy-Economic Feasibility Case-Study Of The National Western Center In Denver, Co, Usa, Ben Saarloos, Jason C. Quinn
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Given the enormous impact of buildings on energy consumption, it is important to continue the development of net-zero energy districts. Opportunities exist for energy efficiency and renewable energy on a district level that may not be feasible in individual buildings. Due to the intermittent nature of many renewable energy sources, net-zero energy districts are dependent on the energy grid. The novelty of this work is to quantify and optimize the economic cost and grid independence of a net-zero energy district using the National Western Center (NWC) in Denver, CO, USA as a case study. The NWC is a 100+ ha …

Vitamin D And Vitamin D-Binding Protein In Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Eman R. Amer, Gehan F. Oreby, Sahar H. Quashwa
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background and aim Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease caused by destruction of pancreatic islet βcells, leading to absolute insulin deficiency. The D vitamins are a group of sterols that have a hormone-like function, which bind to vitamin D receptor. Vitamin D (25(OH) D) deficiency is involved in the induction of autoimmune destruction of β-cells and onset of T1DM. The majority of circulating 25(OH) D is bound to vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP), which protects it from biodegradation, limits its access to target tissues, and helps its reabsorption from the kidneys. VDBP also binds fatty acids, activates macrophages, …

Efficacy Of Moderate Exercise Training On Heart Rate Variability And Left Ventricular Remodeling After Myocardial Infarction, Mai H. Hassan, Mohamad El Bordy
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background After myocardial infarction (MI), elevated sympathetic activity and/or reduced parasympathetic activity are observed. As a result, these patients have a decreased heart rate variability (HRV), which has been linked to an elevated risk of adverse effects and death. Following MI, the remodeling of the left ventricle (LV) is a complex and multifactorial mechanism, with therapeutic and prognostic consequences. Medications that reduced LV improved survival and standard of living. Aim We aimed to evaluate the effect of continuous exercise remodeling training on HRV, function capacity [6-min walk test (6MWT)], and LV remodeling in patients who had experienced MI. Patients and …
Prognostic Effect Of Glycated Hemoglobin In Acute Myocardial Infarction, Mohamad El Bordy, Nadia Youssef Riad
Prognostic Effect Of Glycated Hemoglobin In Acute Myocardial Infarction, Mohamad El Bordy, Nadia Youssef Riad
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background Impaired glucose tolerance and even prediabetic states have a crucial role as risk factors among several different risk factors in acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Some recent studies have shown that poor diabetes management, diagnosed by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), has poor prognostic value regarding future cardiovascular events, whereas other studies recommend that it is the blood glucose level at admission that predicts short-term mortality after AMI and not the HbA1C level. Aim The target of this research is to detect the correlation between the level of HbA1C and risk factors in the patients with AMI and its value regarding the …

Posterior Tympanotomy Versus Posterior Atticotomy In Creating Well-Ventilated Middle Ear Cleft Pros And Cons, Essam F. Abdelfattah, Wael A. Alzami
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background Cortical mastoidectomy is considered a cornerstone step in the surgical management of noncholesteatomatous chronic suppurative otitis media. It comprises the canal wall-up technique, preserving the posterior and superior bony canal walls. The goal of cortical mastoidectomy is mainly to ventilate the middle ear cleft besides eradication of diseased mastoid air cells. The ventilation of the middle ear cleft has no way except through the aditus ad antrum and patent epitympanic diaphragm besides well-functioning Eustachian tube. This way of ventilation is usually affected in chronic infected ears by edematous and polypoid mucosa, leading to its obstruction. Traditional practice used to …
