The in silico study of medicinal plants is a rapidly growing field. Techniques such as reverse screening and network pharmacology are used to study the complex cellular action of medicinal plants against disease. However, it is difficult to produce a meaningful visualization of phytochemical-protein interactions (PCPIs) in the cell. This study introduces a novel workflow combining various tools to visualize a PCPI network for a medicinal plant against a disease. The five steps are 1) phytochemical compilation, 2) reverse screening, 3) network building, 4) network visualization, and 5) evaluation. The output is a PCPI network that encodes multiple dimensions of …

Attenuation Of Autoimmune Phenomena In A Patient With Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome Type 1., Jill Jacobson, Julia Broussard, Courtney Marsh, Brandon D. Newell

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 1 (APS1) is a progressive life-threatening illness with no known cure. Current treatments involve replacement of the hormone deficiencies that result from autoimmune destruction of multiple endocrine organs. We report on a girl whose disease was progressing rapidly until she began on immunosuppressive agents. A healthy 6-year-old girl with no remarkable medical history presented with new onset hypocalcemic seizures and primary hypoparathyroidism. Howell-Jolly bodies consistent with autoimmune hyposplenism were also noted. Genetic testing revealed compound heterozygosity for 2 disease-associated variants in the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene. She later developed elevated liver enzymes, primary adrenal insufficiency, and …

Gary Clark, Oral History Interview, 2021, Matt Jones

Oral Histories

In 2021, Eastern Michigan University Archives lecturer Matt Jones began documenting the story of Ypsilanti’s Human Rights Ordinance #1279 in an effort to explore the ways in which local queer activism has evolved multi-generationally in Ypsilanti. What began as a refusal of service by a local print shop to a small EMU student group quickly turned into a years-long battle over who was deserving of basic human rights. To the LGBTQ activists and community members documented here, they had always been present in the community: working, paying taxes, painting their houses, mowing their lawns, attending council meetings, and even serving …

Helping Students In The Heartland: Student Affairs At Rural Community Colleges, Gabe Estill Dec 2021

Helping Students In The Heartland: Student Affairs At Rural Community Colleges, Gabe Estill

Theses and Dissertations

In this interview study, I examine how student affairs administration (SAA) works at rural community colleges as well as how rural senior student affairs officers (SSAOs) function in their leadership roles. The study purports to understand student affairs in the context of “rurality,” or what it means to be rural. Two primary research questions guide the study. First, how do rural community colleges serve their students? Second, what qualities are needed to lead student affairs at rural community colleges? I employed a semi-structured interview approach to answer these questions, focusing on the experiences of SSAOs at rural community colleges across …

2021-December-13-Etsu Martin Center Sets Melissa Etheridge Show For Late April, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 13, 2021) – In the late 1980s and 1990s, Melissa Etheridge was a rock ‘n’ roll rebel with confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals. In the 21st century, the singer/songwriter is known as a rock queen and icon.

After months of waiting for a break in the country’s and state’s health situation, the East Tennessee State University Martin Center for the Arts has finalized plans for its first public show as a presenter – an evening with Etheridge on her One Way Out tour, set for Wednesday, April 27, in the center’s ETSU Foundation Grand Hall.

Language Maintenance In Utah: Spanish Heritage Speakers' Attitudes And Language Use, Perla Y. Escobar Rodriguez Dec 2021

Language Maintenance In Utah: Spanish Heritage Speakers' Attitudes And Language Use, Perla Y. Escobar Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

The current study quantitatively and qualitatively investigated Spanish maintenance among 45 Spanish heritage language (SHL) speakers in Utah who completed a survey about their linguistic background, their attitudes toward Spanish, their self-rated Spanish proficiency, and their current Spanish usage. Nine participants were also interviewed to expound on their linguistic experience. Previous studies on language maintenance (Alba et al., 2002; Carreira & Kagan, 2011; Lanier, 2014; Lynch, 2000; Mejías et al., 2002; Potowski, 2004; Silva-Corvalán, 1994; Zentella, 1997) have analyzed different sociolinguistics factors that relate to Spanish maintenance and usage in areas with high Hispanic populations. Nevertheless, little research has been …

Trauma Informed Care In Medical Facilities (Terapia Zorientowana Na Traumę W Placówkach Ochrony Zdrowia), Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk, Kathleen J. Farkas

Faculty Scholarship

The recognition of traumatic experiences across all aspects of human life has spurred the development of research on the impacts of trauma in various segments of society. The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACES) first documented the correlation between childhood trauma exposure and physical and mental health disorders in adulthood. Further studies provided additional evidence of the long lasting impacts of trauma and led to practices to decrease re-traumatizing policies and practices. Trauma informed care (TIC) offers concepts and approaches for successful engagement and effective treatment for trauma survivors. This paper presents six basic principles of TIC and the methods for …

Temporal Requirements For Future Landsat Systems For Agricultural Monitoring, Emily Myers Dec 2021

Temporal Requirements For Future Landsat Systems For Agricultural Monitoring, Emily Myers

Theses

Agricultural monitoring is an important application of earth-observing satellite systems, which may be used for stress and disease detection, growth stage monitoring, and yield prediction in crops at a fraction of the time and cost it would take to survey fields manually. Satellites within the Landsat program are frequently used for agricultural monitoring, but they do not always collect imagery often enough to capture rapid changes in vegetation health. To address this limitation, an increase in revisit rate is being considered for future Landsat systems. This research aims to determine the necessary overpass frequency for a future Landsat sensor for …

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Healthcare leaders have been challenged to mitigate burnout and foster well-being among physicians. Professional societies are beginning to address this in a systematic manner.

Methods: In 2014, the American College of Physicians (ACP) endeavored to improve well-being for its 160,000 members of internists and trainees through a Well-being Champion (WBC) program based in the majority of its 85 national and international chapters. The program was supported by an evidence-based curriculum, chapter volunteers who served as champions, and in-person and virtual trainings. Training included a 1-2 day program in 2018 and 2019, focused on educating champions on causes …

The Effects Not Grading Formative Assessments Has On Summative Assessments, Luke Saunders

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

This 2021 study focused on the relationship between not grading formative assessments and summative assessments. The focus was on whether students will do their formative assessments if they know they would not be graded. Furthermore, if they decided to complete or not complete their formative assessments, this study would show the effects on their summative scores. The study lasted for one chapter in their curriculum. The research took place in a North Dakota school, specifically 52 geometry students. Data showed that majority of students will not do their homework if not held accountable. The data also suggests that not grading …

Collaboration, Policies, And Programming: Advising Administrators’ Perspectives On Academic Recovery, Pietro Sasso, Shelley Price-Williams, Tiffany Shemwell

Faculty Publications

Colleges and universities use academic recovery programs as one strategy to improve student retention. Relying on interview data with mid-level academic advising administrators who coordinate academic recovery programs, this study describes key elements of those programs and challenges advising administrators face in implementing or managing those elements. Specifically, academic recovery programs rely on campus collaboration, administering policy, and supplemental programming to help students succeed. Administrators cited a lack of institutional support and resources as barriers to successfully implementing or creating collaboration, policies, and programming. We conclude by discussing implications for practice and suggestions for improving academic probation and recovery programs.

Mercury Emissions From Iron Mining And Copper Mining In The Upper Peninsula, Michigan, Ahmed Al Rahbi Dec 2021

Mercury Emissions From Iron Mining And Copper Mining In The Upper Peninsula, Michigan, Ahmed Al Rahbi

Honors Theses

The wealth in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has been intimately linked with mining, particularly the extraction of iron and copper. Iron was deposited in the Upper Peninsula 1.9 billion years ago (Gogebic and Ranges, 2020), and copper deposits are believed to be 1.1 billion years old (Blakemore et al., 2016). In the Upper Peninsula, mercury occurs naturally in taconite (iron ore) as elemental mercury (Hg0), and within the copper ores as “Mercury copper amalgam” (CuHg). When elemental mercury is released from the ores, it oxidizes in the atmosphere to form inorganic mercury (Hg2+) (Risher, 2003; …

Lost At Sea, Anny Oberlink Dec 2021

Lost At Sea, Anny Oberlink

Capstones

At the end of World War I and World War II, in a new era of peace, nations confronted an unprecedented logistical problem: millions of tons of unexploded ordnance—once a wartime boon—had become a peacetime burden. Faced with a mandate to dispose of excess munitions, militaries turned to dumping their stockpiles into the sea. But now a complex and urgent issue is emerging. Increasingly, as industry looks to build offshore—wind power turbines, internet cables, oil pipelines—they are facing a potential peril: millions of tons of unexploded bombs and ammunition that are lying on the ocean floor can explode or leak …

At A Former Cluster Site, The Tide Remains After De Blasio Era Reforms, Homeless Shelter Shows No Signs Of Improvement, Jacob R. Schermerhorn

Capstones

Following the 2017 "Turning the Tide" reform effort by Mayor de Blasio, the controversial cluster site shelters started to combat homelessness were set to close in 2021. How effective were those reforms? In an examination of resident experiences and historical building data, one of the worst offending buildings was mainly unchanged by efforts. Aside from the designation change, homeless providers moved individuals into the building and conditions had still not improved.

Practice Research Methods In Social Work: Processes, Applications And Implications For Social Service Organisations, Bowen Mcbeath, Michael J. Austin, Sarah Carnochan, Emmeline Chuang

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although social work research is commonly rooted within social service settings, it can be difficult for social work researchers and practitioners to develop and sustain participatory studies that specifically promote knowledge sharing and service improvement involving organisational practice. One participatory approach is practice research (PR), which involves social work researchers and practitioners collaborating to define, understand and try to improve the delivery of health and social care services and organisational structures and processes. The two goals of this commentary are to introduce essential methods and approaches to PR and to identify points of connection involving PR and social service organisational …

Peer Mentoring Programs For Students With Disabilities Attending Center-Based Schools, Andrea L. Vargo Dec 2021

Peer Mentoring Programs For Students With Disabilities Attending Center-Based Schools, Andrea L. Vargo

Masters Projects

Due to the level of support needed to become successful, students with moderate to severe disabilities may be placed in a center-based program separate from their typically developed peers. In this placement, students with disabilities, who often have deficits in the areas of communication and social interaction, have little to no access to their peers without disabilities. Therefore, developing and implementing a program that encourages both access to same-age peers and opportunities to improve social interaction skills would be ideal. One of the best ways to provide strategies for these opportunities is through peer-mediated instruction, specifically peer mentorship. The goals …

Stress And Burnout Among Undergraduate Music Education Majors: An Examination Of Trends, Influences, And Coping Mechanisms, Emily Carroll Dec 2021

Stress And Burnout Among Undergraduate Music Education Majors: An Examination Of Trends, Influences, And Coping Mechanisms, Emily Carroll

Honors Projects

Previous research points to an increase in undergraduate music education major stress. A stress questionnaire was sent to three Midwest collegiate institutions: one was a mid-sized liberal arts school, another was a conservatory, and the last was a large state institution. Findings confirm concerning elevated levels of stress among undergraduate music education majors. The levels of stress appear to be a universal issue in this particular degree program, implying there is a need for change to better student wellness.
