Filled/Non-Filled Pairs: An Empirical Challenge To The Integrated Information Theory Of Consciousness, Amber R. Hopkins, Kelvin J. Mcqueen
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Perceptual filling-in for vision is the insertion of visual properties (e.g., color, contour, luminance, or motion) into one’s visual field, when those properties have no corresponding retinal input. This paper introduces and provides preliminary empirical support for filled/non-filled pairs, pairs of images that appear identical, yet differ by amount of filling-in. It is argued that such image pairs are important to the experimental testing of theories of consciousness. We review recent experimental research and conclude that filling-in involves brain activity with relatively high integrated information (Φ) compared to veridical visual perceptions. We then present filled/non-filled pairs as …

Empathy As A Moderator Of Preservice Teachers’ Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-Efficacy And Outcome Expectancy Beliefs, Juta Tammachart
Dissertations
The main purpose of this research was to examine the relationship model between culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy (CRTSE) and culturally responsive teaching outcome expectancy beliefs (CRTOE) in Thailand. There were two research questions outlined in the study: what is the relationship between preservice teachers’ CRTSE and CRTOE? Also, does the culturally responsive teaching teacher empathy (CRTTE) moderate the relationship of preservice teachers’ CRTSE and CRTOE?
Based on the CRT standards by Siwatu (2005), there were three measures applied in the study: CRTSE, CRTOE, and CRTTE scales. These instruments were piloted with 536 preservice teachers in the Faculty of Education, Prince …

Examining Arkansas' Freshman Gpas And Long-Term Outcomes, Sarah R. Morris, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Charlene A. Reid
Arkansas Education Reports
This study examines the Grade Point Averages (GPAs) of high school freshman in Arkansas and their relationship with later outcomes. Using de-identified student-level data from 2009-10 to 2018-19 from the Arkansas Department of Education, this research investigates trends in freshman GPAs, how these trends vary for different demographic and socioeconomic groups, and the relationship of freshman GPAs to high school graduation and college enrollment.
We follow seven cohorts of Arkansas first-time freshmen who were enrolled in twelfth grade four years later. Using regression analyses controlling only for student demographic characteristics, we find a one-point gain in freshman GPAs to be …

Personal protective equipment (PPE) in mine action typically consists of a polycarbonate visor that fully covers the face and front neck, and body armor consisting of an apron made of aramid fabric (i.e., Kevlar) that fully covers the front torso, groin, and neck. PPE used in mine action is generally considered as “the last line of defense” since the primary method through which accidental deaths and injuries are prevented is through the application of and adherence to appropriate standard operating procedures (SOPs). However, with any operations, there is always an element of “acceptable risk,” and universal adherence to all SOPs …

Accident Response To Mitigate Risk: A Call To Action, Lillian Gates
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Effective accident response in humanitarian mine action (HMA) contributes to increased safety in future demining work. Mine action organizations play a variety of roles in the improvement of accident response, with the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs being the most recent to adjust their accident response process by establishing the Accident Review Panel (ARP). This panel consolidates the office’s efforts and allows for standardized accident response protocol and the collection and analysis of accident data. Other organizations active in cultivating better accident responses include the United Nations Mine Action …
Unexplored Opportunities: Multi-Sector Strategies For Collaboration In Underwater Unexploded Ordnance Remediation, Chris Price
Unexplored Opportunities: Multi-Sector Strategies For Collaboration In Underwater Unexploded Ordnance Remediation, Chris Price
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Few global challenges are as ripe for multi-sector collaboration as underwater (UW) unexploded ordnance (UXO) remediation. Millions of metric tons of UXO are lying on and under the seabed corroding, decaying, and seeping toxic chemicals into the ecosystem—ultimately ending up in our food. Because most underwater UXO are from WWI and WWII, and given the corrosion rates of most metals from which ordnance is made, the inevitable problems with ordnance dumped, sunk, and fired into bodies of water (mostly in coastal regions) are catching up with us. The urgency is exacer-bated by biochemical changes in oceans due to climate change …

A Pressing Need: Decades Of Agreement, Few Results On Arms Record-Keeping, Philip Alpers
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Recent developments in computerized record-keeping for state-owned arms, ammunition, and explosives now offer simple, affordable solutions in the lowest-capacity environments. A global partnership between Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and the developers of ArmsTracker soft-ware promises to break a twenty-year logjam that, until now, has denied comprehensive, affordable weapon and ammunition record-keeping systems to states in greatest need.

Bullying In The C-Suite: A Nurse Leader Perspective, Kimberly Ann Colonnelli
Bullying In The C-Suite: A Nurse Leader Perspective, Kimberly Ann Colonnelli
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
An estimated 35% of American workers have experienced bullying, and in 80% of those situations, the perpetrator was a supervisor or boss. 1 However, the reality is that bullying can come from anyone in the workplace, including subordinates. Victims are generally well liked and good performers, making them feel like threats to a bully’s power base. Bullying, unlike harassment, is not a legally defined behavior, so no laws currently exist to punish it. Victims are, therefore, at the mercy of their bosses, supervisors, co-workers, and human resource departments for protection or relief. Bullying is not a singular event, but rather …

Counselor Education Capstones
Suicide is a universal health crisis. However, it is also a topic that is infrequently discussed. There is significant research regarding risk factors for suicide, gender, or population comparisons on the likelihood of suicidal ideation, attempts, and completions; but there is a lack of comprehensive research regarding the connection between suicidality and substance abuse. In addition, limited research is provided on the topic of initial suicide screening requirements at intake and during a residential stay in Treatment Centers, Hospitals, and Primary Care Clinics. This review of literature intends to answer the following questions: 1) How prevalent is suicidal ideation, attempts, …
Rethinking Recidivism: Considerations For Counselors Working With Adult Clients In Sex Offender Treatment, Claire Richards
Rethinking Recidivism: Considerations For Counselors Working With Adult Clients In Sex Offender Treatment, Claire Richards
Counselor Education Capstones
Sex offender treatment is often court ordered and part of conditional release for individuals who have been convicted of harmful sexual acts. Counselors working with this population have an important role in terms of supporting and addressing the needs of their clients, but also in terms of public safety. A cursory exploration of this treatment includes an overview of the role that risk/protective factors documented through assessments have on outcomes, the impact of restrictions regarding conditional release, and how the counselors are both impacted by and integral to this field. Counselors who work with this demographic are presented with informed …

Library Staff Online Writings
In my first post, I wrote about the big feelings our students might be grappling with and how to approach the semester carefully, with kindness and grace. Lately I’ve been asking myself: how do we do the same for ourselves? Something about this moment – this month, this semester, this year, you pick – feels. . . off. People are stressed, depressed, or entirely burnt out. People are quitting their jobs at higher-than-average rates and having trouble focusing on their work, feeling overwhelmed and distracted. It’s almost 2022 and people are still struggling with processing 2020.

Flavonoids Reduce Lipid Peroxides And Increase Glutathione Levels In Pooled Human Liver Microsomes (Hlms), William Yaw Boadi, Camille Stevenson, Dontrez Johnson, Mohamed Adel Mohamed
Chemistry Faculty Research
The effects of each of the flavonoids; genistein (G), quercetin (Q) and kaempferol (K) at several doses on lipid peroxides (LP) and reduced glutathione (GSH) in pooled human liver microsomes (HLMs) were investigated following the oxidative damage for 4, 6, 18 and 24 hr. HLMs (1 mg/ml) were exposed to each of the above flavonoids at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 μM and incubated for the respective times as previously stated. Our hypothesis was that HLMs exposed to the flavonoids for the respective exposure times can decrease LP and increase GSH in HLMs to better cope with the …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and one of the most prominent challenges of precision healthcare is early identification of AD. To combat this latency in diagnosis, integration of machine learning has been exercised for more cost efficient and powerful diagnostic tools. Specifically, we have developed a workflow for identifying AD within a given sample. Utilizing cerebral cortex proteomic data as a baseline, we were able to test two different forms of feature selection and 6 different machine learning methods. The best performing of these combinations was using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) method with features …
Recognizing The Unique Needs Of Women With Varied Pregnancy Loss Histories, Shalini Venkat
Recognizing The Unique Needs Of Women With Varied Pregnancy Loss Histories, Shalini Venkat
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Infertility is associated with psychological distress; women who experience miscarriage and recurrent miscarriage experience additional grief and trauma. Unfortunately, available psychological interventions for infertility are of limited efficacy; a new intervention is therefore needed. However, little is known about the psychotherapy preferences of women with infertility, and particularly whether miscarriage history is associated with treatment preferences. Thus, the current study evaluated the psychotherapy preferences of women with infertility as a function of miscarriage history. 410 North American women were recruited to complete an online survey assessing their quality of life, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and preferences of 14 psychotherapy techniques endorsed …

Emergence: Documents In Crisis, Wayne De Fremery
Emergence: Documents In Crisis, Wayne De Fremery
Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship
This essay suggests the etymologies of emergence, emergency, and crisis create a useful framework for theorizing documents. Indeed, the overlapping semantic associations of the words allow for the idea that documents emerge in crisis. The semantic overlap also allows a means for theorizing how documents descend into crisis. Theorizing documents in crisis, the essay argues, usefully complements documentalist theories of documentary representation suggested by thinkers like Paul Otlet and Suzanne Briet, as well newer conceptualizations of documentality as conceived by Michael Buckland and Maurizio Ferraris and documentarity as described by Ronald Day.

Faculty Research 2021
BACKGROUND: Interleukin 4 (IL-4i1)-induced gene 1 encodes L-phenylalanine oxidase that catabolizes phenylalanine into phenylpyruvate. IL-4i1 is mainly expressed by antigen-presenting cells (APCs), inhibits T-cell proliferation, regulates B-cell activation, modulates T cell responses, and drives macrophage polarization, but its role in bacterial infections is understudied.
METHODS: We evaluated IL-4i1 deletion in macrophages and mice on infection with virulent H37Rv and W-Beijing lineage hypervirulent HN878 Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) strains. The bacterial growth and proinflammatory responses were measured in vitro and in vivo. Histopathological analysis, lung immune cell recruitment, and macrophage activation were assessed at the early and chronic stages of Mtb infection. …

The United Nation’s health-related Sustainable Development Goals are difficult to achieve in low- and middle-income countries due to workforce shortages and inadequate health surveillance systems. However, with the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer algorithms, it is possible to apply AI to healthcare technologies to improve progress towards these UN standards. This project aims at using and improving computer algorithms and deep learning to aid in the extraction of important structural and functional information from murine carotid artery ultrasound and photoacoustic images. First, we created a large database of simulated photoacoustic images to optimize the algorithms. These images were …

Measuring Science Teachers' Emotional Experiences With Evolution Using Real World Scenarios, William Lee Romine, Rutuja Mahajan, Amber Todd
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Low acceptance of evolution remains an obstacle to quality biology instruction. We develop and utilize a novel assessment which measures emotional experience in light of real-world evolution education scenarios. We presented 296 science teachers 4 pro-evolution and 8 anti-evolution scenarios and asked them to rate their levels of joy, anger, sadness, fear, disgust, shame, and guilt elicited by that scenario on an ordinal 5-point scale. We used exploratory factor analysis to extract the most important dimensions in the teachers’ responses, Rasch analysis to explore the validity of the extracted subscales, and stepwise regression to find the most important factors driving …

Viajes Sagrados: Una Lectura Desde Las TeologíAs Queer De La PelíCula Santitos De Alejandro Springall, Hugo Córdova Quero
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
This article analyzes immigrants’ genderized and sexualized experiences intermingling with theological discourses by exploring the film Santitos [little saints]. Queer theory and queer/indecent theologies provide theoretical tools to interrogate those experiences in the movie. The analysis explores how religious institutions have traditionally denied the intersectionality of gender/sexuality and religion/theology that bind up the everyday lives of the faithful. Thus, it explores alternatives to view those issues from a perspective that could still be considered «Christian.» Furthermore, it contributes to a perspective that could enforce and promote the spiritual growth of the faithful amidst situations of migration and sexual work.
Understanding Proximity Mobile Payments Adoption In South Africa: A Perceived Risk Perspective, Charlene Eksteen, Michael Humbani
Understanding Proximity Mobile Payments Adoption In South Africa: A Perceived Risk Perspective, Charlene Eksteen, Michael Humbani
Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets
Although existing literature claims that consumers are ready for proximity mobile payments, the reality is that adoption is still low in South Africa. Service providers’ attempts to translate this potential into profi t is hindered by consumers’ perception of risks associated with proximity mobile payments. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived risk dimensions as possible inhibitors of proximity mobile payment adoption, as well as to investigate the role of gender diff erences, drawing from the perceived risk and push-pull theories. Using a convenience sample, data was collected from South African smartphone users, from whom 284 valid …
