Background and Objectives: Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are a broad-spectrum class of antibiotics routinely prescribed for common bacterial infections despite recent recommendations to use them only for life-threatening cases. In addition to their antimicrobial properties, FQs act in the central nervous system as GABAA receptor inhibitors, which could potentially affect functionality of the vagus nerve at the forefront of gastrointestinal (GI) tract function. Alterations in neural control of digestion have been shown to be linked to Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs), which are usually diagnosed based on self-reported symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of FGIDs following FQ …

Challenging Behavior In The Classroom: Effective Strategies To Implement To Support The Needs Of All Learners In The Early Childhood Special Education Setting, Kassandra Otto
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
When examining how to meet the needs of children in the Early Childhood Special Education classroom with challenging behaviors, an essential component is addressing the behavior at an early age and preventing challenging behavior in young children. Setting up a classroom environment conductive to learning is essential (Alter & Conroy, 2005). Creating a positive teacher-student relationship creates mutual respect (McGuire, 2017). How educators respond to challenging behavior reflects the overall classroom environment (Strain, 2017). Literature was reviewed in two disability categories, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Emotional Behavioral Disorder (EBD), focusing on challenging behaviors in the Early Childhood Special Education …

Professional Role Of Paraprofessionals: A Literature Review, Karli Kirkwood
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Abstract
Paraprofessionals are an integral component to the learning and growth of students with unique needs. While paraprofessionals are heavily relied upon to provide guidance, communication, instruction, and behavior management amongst other things, studies have found that many individuals working within this field feel underprepared expressing lack of training necessary to carry out the duties to which they are assigned. Professional development for paraprofessionals is limited, and the acknowledgement of such training lacks attention. Research shows that the roles, duties, and responsibilities of paraprofessionals are blurred and often overlooked. This literature review aids in defining the needs of paraprofessionals to …

Cognitive Processing Therapy: Training For College Counseling Centers Treating Victims Of Sexual Assault, Kari O'Keeffe
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Sexual assault has been known to lead to subsequent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in many of its victims, which can be extremely debilitating. One of the populations that is most at risk for experiencing sexual assault is college students. Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a known treatment for PTSD and has been shown to be efficacious in its outcomes; however little research has been done on how those outcomes stand the test of time. Due its flexible nature CPT can be delivered via group or individual therapy and the number of sessions can be modified, which makes CPT not only …

An Educator’S Guide To Tier 2 And Tier 3 Evidence-Based Interventions For Students With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Needs, Sara Schmidt
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Students with an emotional and behavioral disorder or emotional/behavioral needs can be impacted in many different areas that are critical to school success. These impacts not only affect student success within schools, but also drastically affect post-school success and can result in negative long-term outcomes. Fortunately, many school-based models have been identified to be effective in addressing these impacts for students with and at-risk for emotional and behavioral disorders. A distinctive feature within all these models includes the implementation of tiered evidence-based interventions. However, from personal experience and from literature reviewed, there seems to be a lack of implementation of …

Stimming Expresses Empathy, Not To Be Masked Or Persecuted: A Scoping Review And Case Study Of The “Double-Empathy Problem” Solved By Recognizing The Autism Language, Kathryn Haas
Student Capstone Papers
This article critically examines autism and autistic stimming through the lenses of neurotypicals and autistics, evaluates confines currently imposed upon autistics by neurotypical society, and synthesizes what autistic leaders have expressed about their experiences striving for inclusion (Gernsbacher, 2017; Milton, 2012). Autistic-led studies are now at the forefront of the neurodiversity movement and are growing in fervor. The following themes were identified: (a) prevalence of autism, (b) the interpretation and measurement of empathy, (c) discovery of genetic factors transformed autistics’ identity, (d) publication of non-genetic factors such as vaccines undermined the legitimacy of the autism language, (e) the problem with …

Electric Vehicle Integration In San Francisco, Lisa Farmos
Master's Projects and Capstones
California’s Executive Order N-79-20 requires all new cars and passenger trucks sold in California to be zero-emissions by 2035. Electric vehicles (EVs) are the primary alternative fuel solution. However, there are widespread barriers to ownership, particularly for those in lower socioeconomic classes. A literature review of barriers to EV ownership shows the primary barrier is insufficient overnight charging infrastructure. Geospatial data of EV charging infrastructure and 2020 census tract data were used to map average income versus EV charging infrastructure in San Francisco. Data maps confirm the literature review findings: there is a positive correlation between income and EV charging …

Exploring The Biofilm Of Candida Auris As It Relates To Persistence In Clinical Setting And Susceptibility To Antimicrobials, Bethany Butts
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
The rapid rise of drug-resistant pathogens is a global health concern. Known pathogens are acquiring resistance to many commonly used drugs, while new drug-resistant pathogens are emerging. These resistant pathogens are responsible for many healthcare-associated infections (HAI) [1, 2]. Candida auris is among these emerging drug-resistant pathogens, first described in 2009. The CDC labels C. auris at the highest level of global public health threat [3,4]. Effective methods of decolonization and control of the organisms have yet to be established, as it is resistant to many agents used for microbial control. Recent research has found that C. auris has the …

Phage Commander, An Application For Rapid Gene Identification In Bacteriophage Genomes Using Multiple Programs, Matt Lazeriff, Geordie Ryder, Sarah L. Harris, Philippos K. Tsourkas
Computer Science Faculty Research
The number of sequenced bacteriophage genomes is growing at an exponential rate. The majority of sequenced bacteriophage genomes are annotated by one or more of several freely available gene identification programs (Glimmer, GeneMark, RAST, Prodigal, etc.). No program has been shown to consistently outperform the others; thus, the choice of which program to use is not obvious. We present the Phage Commander application for rapid identification of bacteriophage genes using multiple gene identification programs. Phage Commander runs a bacteriophage genome sequence through nine gene identification programs (and an additional program for identification of tRNAs) and integrates the results within a …

Synthetic Aperture Optical Imaging Interferometric Microscopy With Improved Image Quality, Preyom K. Dey
Synthetic Aperture Optical Imaging Interferometric Microscopy With Improved Image Quality, Preyom K. Dey
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The resolution limit of optical microscopy can be extended by using Imaging Interferometric Microscopy (IIM), which uses a low numerical aperture (NA) objective lens to achieve resolution equivalent to that of a high-NA objective lens with multiple sub-images. Along with the resolution enhancement challenge, IIM often suffers from poor image quality. In this dissertation, several image quality improvement methods are proposed and verified with simulation and experimental results. Next, techniques to extend the resolution limit of IIM to ≤ 100nm using a low-NA objective lens are demonstrated. An experimental technique of using a grating coupler on …
Introduction To Symposium On Birth Rights And Wrongs, By Dov Fox, Peter Schuck
Introduction To Symposium On Birth Rights And Wrongs, By Dov Fox, Peter Schuck
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
This symposium consists of four essays by leading academic commentators developing their distinctive takes on the book, followed by a conclusion by Professor Fox containing detailed responses to each of them. This introduction provides a very brief, largely descriptive tour d’horizon of the commentators’ essays.
The Moral Cost Of Compensatory Damage Claims In Reproductive Negligence Cases, David Wasserman
The Moral Cost Of Compensatory Damage Claims In Reproductive Negligence Cases, David Wasserman
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
In this original and important work, Dov Fox makes a compelling case for rethinking and reformulating the way that negligent conduct by reproductive health professionals is understood, and in the way the harms resulting from that misconduct are rectified. He seeks a unified account of this negligence and harm that recognizes the “gravamen of the offense” as the wrongful interference with reproductive planning while also recognizing three distinct categories of adverse outcomes: deprived, imposed, and confounded procreation. Fox argues that the injuries in each category differ from each other sufficiently to justify the recognition of three distinct torts.
Birth Rights And Wrongs Extended, Reuven Brandt
Birth Rights And Wrongs Extended, Reuven Brandt
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
Dov Fox’s Birth Rights and Wrongs offers a largely compelling argument for expanding the scope of legal actions and remedies available to those whose reproductive choices are wrongfully frustrated by the actions of others. The dominant focus of the book is individuals who, due to the negligence and/or malice of medical professionals, suffer harms arising from reproduction imposed, denied, or confounded. A serious examination of these kinds of injuries is certainly appropriate given that medical professionals are increasingly involved in individuals’ reproductive plans and that serious harms may arise when desired medical interventions are improperly implemented. I will not take …
