Better To Forgive Or To Forget? Marital Transgressions And Forgiveness In Older Couples, Jakob Jensen, Amy Rauer, Amanda Johnson
Better To Forgive Or To Forget? Marital Transgressions And Forgiveness In Older Couples, Jakob Jensen, Amy Rauer, Amanda Johnson
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Navigating romantic transgressions in older adulthood is imperative for both relationship quality and longevity, making forgiveness a critical process. The current study examined marital transgressions and forgiveness among 64 older (age range = 56–89), higher-functioning, primarily White, married couples studied at two time points spaced 16.4 months apart. More than half the spouses did not report a transgression in the past year, and not doing so was associated with better marital functioning at both time points. Of the transgressions reported, thematic analyses revealed they fell into six categories (e.g., spouse behaving badly, financial issues), but were overall relatively minor in …

Background: Access to cognitive screening in rural underserved communities is limited and was further diminished during the COVID-19 pandemic. We examined whether a telephone-based cognitive screening intervention would be effective in increasing ADRD knowledge, detecting the need for further cognitive evaluation, and making and tracking the results of referrals.
Method: Using a dependent t-test design, older, largely African American and Afro-Caribbean participants completed a brief educational intervention, pre/post AD knowledge measure, and cognitive screening.
Results: Sixty of 85 eligible individuals consented. Seventy-percent of the sample self-reported as African American, Haitian Creole, or Hispanic, and 75% were female, with an average …

ABSTRACT
Infected cases and suspect cases of covid-19 are increasing more and more daily. This increment happens either in whole regions of Indonesia and DKI Jakarta as a capital city. The purpose of this research is to seek the pattern in spatial of Covid-19 incidence with 3 different periods of before, during, and after large-scale social restriction, and to identify the influence of the presence of the elderly and other factors. One of the scopes of this study is the presence of the elderly because the elderly population is considered as influencing the increase of Covid-19 incidence. The analysis method …
New Graduate Nurse Retention Strategies: An Integrative Literature Review, Amy Fiala
New Graduate Nurse Retention Strategies: An Integrative Literature Review, Amy Fiala
Nursing Masters Papers
Decreasing nurse retention rates, particularly of new graduate nurses, is a costly issue for health care organizations across the country. Turnover rates for new nurses average around 20% in the first year following graduation (Kovner, et al., 2014). Low retention rates also create staff burnout, orientation fatigue for preceptors, poor morale, and safety concerns. The purpose of this integrative literature review is to identify best practice strategies and interventions to increase new graduate nurse retention in the acute care setting. Ten articles were selected for this review, including three high-level systematic reviews. Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory was chosen as the conceptual …
Older Adults Are More Likely To Avoid Covid-19 Information, Julia Nolte, Corinna Löckenhoff
Older Adults Are More Likely To Avoid Covid-19 Information, Julia Nolte, Corinna Löckenhoff
Population Health Research Brief Series
Older adults are at higher risk of dying from COVID-19 but less interested in information that might lower the risk of getting or spreading the disease. This brief shows that in the first months of the pandemic, older adults were less likely to consume COVID-19 information or media than younger adults. These behaviors are associated with age differences in emotional experiences and preferences, with older adults feeling calmer and more interested in protecting their feelings than younger adults. To keep older adults informed on COVID-19, government and health officials should directly target communication efforts to older adults.
Best Friends Forever And Family Ties: Continuity And Change In Closeness With Parents And Friends Among Australian Adolescents, Mckell A. Jorgensen-Wells
Best Friends Forever And Family Ties: Continuity And Change In Closeness With Parents And Friends Among Australian Adolescents, Mckell A. Jorgensen-Wells
Theses and Dissertations
During adolescence, the need for social connection increases. Yet, fostering emotional closeness in relationships becomes more complex, as the need for autonomy also increases and social environments must adapt to become conducive to these seemingly competing needs. This complexity necessitates more research on what happens to close relationships during adolescence, so parents, scholars, and practitioners are better equipped to help individuals navigate the unique social atmosphere of adolescence. The current study draws upon multi-level modeling techniques to estimate growth models of Australian adolescents' closeness to parents and closeness to friends from ages 12-17 and examine predictors of these trajectories. Findings …

The Digital Divide: A Consideration Of Justice And Pastoral Care In Moral Spaces In Response To Underserved Communities Experiencing Inequity In Technology- The Bible Dictates Our Christian Response, Lael Melville
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
The Melville Family Foundation understands that poverty in underserved communities’ fuels economic instability fostering inequality in education. The COVID19 pandemic highlighted poverty as a breeding ground for injustice. The Pandemic drove life as we knew it online, further highlighting inequities in the technology space or the “digital divide”. Christians have a responsibility to the digital divide in a way that facilitates justice while responding with the love of God.
The aim is to explore the digital divide in the consideration of justice and pastoral care in response to underserved communities experiencing inequity in technology.
The researcher of this study will …
Prevention Of Falls In Dickinson County, Iowa, Tamera Frederick
Prevention Of Falls In Dickinson County, Iowa, Tamera Frederick
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Falls are the leading cause of unintentional death to older adults over 65 years of age. A fall can negatively impact an older adult through injuries, loss of independence, and other negative consequences. The impact of ageism can negatively affect the implementation of programming for the older adult. This is seen in the individual and community bias through attitudes, stereotypes, and beliefs. Fit, and Strong (Center for Healthy Aging, 2020) and Healthy Steps in Motion (Center for Healthy Aging, 2021) are recommended programs to implement for fall prevention in the community. Increasing awareness and strategies to prevent ageism are also …
The Effect Of An Unfolding Case Study On Critical Thinking, Knowledge Acquisition, And Handoff Communication In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Antionella M. Upshaw
The Effect Of An Unfolding Case Study On Critical Thinking, Knowledge Acquisition, And Handoff Communication In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Antionella M. Upshaw
Dissertations
Miscommunication during handoffs at time of transition for the older adult patient often results in hospital readmissions, penalties and nursing malpractice. Handoff communication (HOC) is a necessary and critical factor in patient safety; therefore, it is imperative that nurses be educated and trained in how to communicate essential geriatric patient data, minimize errors and ensure continuity of care. Nursing researchers report that HOC is a critical responsibility and varies in educational methods creating a latent patient safety risk. The unfolding case study (UCS) is increasingly being used to promote critical thinking and improve communication but lack of evidence to guide …
Human-Human Hand Interactions Aid Balance During Walking By Haptic Communication, Mengnan Wu, Luke Drnach, Sistania M. Bong, Yun Seong Song, Lena H. Ting
Human-Human Hand Interactions Aid Balance During Walking By Haptic Communication, Mengnan Wu, Luke Drnach, Sistania M. Bong, Yun Seong Song, Lena H. Ting
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Principles from human-human physical interaction may be necessary to design more intuitive and seamless robotic devices to aid human movement. Previous studies have shown that light touch can aid balance and that haptic communication can improve performance of physical tasks, but the effects of touch between two humans on walking balance has not been previously characterized. This study examines physical interaction between two persons when one person aids another in performing a beam-walking task. 12 pairs of healthy young adults held a force sensor with one hand while one person walked on a narrow balance beam (2 cm wide x …
A Model Of Factors Contributing To Perceived Abilities For Health-Promoting Self-Care Of Community-Dwelling Thai Older Adults, Porntip P. Malathum
A Model Of Factors Contributing To Perceived Abilities For Health-Promoting Self-Care Of Community-Dwelling Thai Older Adults, Porntip P. Malathum
Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to examine factors contributing to perceived abilities for health-promoting self-care of community-dwelling Thai older adults. An integration of selected concepts from Orem's (1995) self-care theory and Bandura's (1997) self-efficacy theory is established to generate a conceptual model for this study. The study variables included age, education, perceived family support, perceived friend support, chronic health problems, functional ability, perceived health status, and perceived abilities for health-promoting self-care.
An Examination Of Faith Community Nursing Interventions In The Promotion Of Successful Aging, Lina B. Hixson
An Examination Of Faith Community Nursing Interventions In The Promotion Of Successful Aging, Lina B. Hixson
Dissertations
Faith Community Nursing is a specialty nursing practice providing ongoing supportive health care to community dwellers of all ages. Practicing within the context of a community of faith, these nurses focus on health promotion and disease prevention using their expertise to combine spiritual and physical dimensions of care. As the population of Americans continues to age at a rapid rate, the number of older adults is expected to more than double by the year 2060. Many older individuals live with one or more chronic diseases, however living with a chronic disease does not always require inpatient or home care services. …

A Comparison Of Heat Treatment-Induced Skeletal Muscle Adaptations Relative To Exercise Training, Jamie P. Kaluhiokalani, Jack Mehling, Brandon Pfeifer, Mohadeseh Ahmadi
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
ABSTRACT
In vitro and animal studies indicate that the response to heat stress is associated with beneficial adaptations that promote cell health and survival. Few studies to date have examined this finding in human subjects, and it is unclear how the adaptation compares in magnitude to exercise training. PURPOSE: To investigate the skeletal muscle adaptations (namely mitochondrial biogenesis and capillarization) of 6 weeks of deep-muscle heat treatment relative to exercise training. We hypothesized that heat treatment (HT), applied through pulsed shortwave diathermy (2 hr, 3 days/week) over a 6-week intervention period would lead to increased mitochondrial content and capillarity …

Master of Art Theology Thesis
Uddo Tsigewengel B. “The Contemporary Situation of Elderly People in Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus.” MA Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2022. 100pp.
The Church is God’s agent to serve God’s people in the church and society at large. The scope of the Church’s ministry comprises all ages: young, adult, and elderly. Culturally, in Ethiopia, children and close family members are responsible for caring for the elderly, therefore, the church has not given satisfactory attention to holistic elderly care. Moreover, current societal change and globalization have negatively affected the indigenous family-support system for the elderly. As a result, many …
