Effects Of Altered Somatosensory Input On Lower Limb Mechanics Via Different Shoes And Barefoot Walking In Individuals With Chronic Post-Stroke Hemiparesis, Aaron Abraham Simon, Jynelle Marie Guerrero Arches, Megan Leigh Keohane, Wee Jin Jed Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

[Purpose/Hypothesis] Stroke is a leading cause of disability that results in various neurological deficits. Stroke can cause impaired somatosensory input, which results in decreased balance and gait speed, ultimately increasing fall risks. Therapies to increase somatosensory input have shown promise for people with stroke as well as other neurological populations. However, few studies have systematically investigated varying somatosensory input via different footwear to improve walking in people post-stroke. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of altering somatosensory input via different types of footwear (i.e., barefoot, self-selected shoes, and memory foam shoes) on gait kinetics and ankle …

Physical Activity Interventions For Older Adults In The Age Of Covid-19 And Beyond, Rachel N. Bragg, K. Jason J. Crandall

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 2: Issue 1, Article 6, 2021. As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues, it is important to understand why older adults are at higher risk for more severe morbidity and higher mortality compared to younger age groups. At the same time, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting physical activity and exercise can have positive benefits for older adults’ health. Point of application #1: The first step in keeping older adults active is motivating them to adhere to a structured program either at home, in a community setting, or in a long-term care …

The Driving Simulator Visual Field In Glaucoma – A Novel Task To Test Available Field Of View, Deepta Ghate May 2021

The Driving Simulator Visual Field In Glaucoma – A Novel Task To Test Available Field Of View, Deepta Ghate

Theses & Dissertations

Glaucoma causes peripheral vision loss and impaired driving performance. We developed a novel driving simulator visual field task (DSVF) in a panoramic driving simulator to map the available field of view under different perceptual task loads in naturalistic settings. Our hypothesis is that “available field of view” will decrease with increasing task load in both glaucoma subjects and controls. This is a cross-sectional study with 28 glaucoma subjects and 19 controls. DSVF (60̊ x 20̊ visual field at 2.5 m) was tested in a high-fidelity interactive driving simulator in 4 different scenarios: a) no distractions b) no driving condition with …

Acute Physiological And Perceptual Responses To Unilateral Versus Bilateral Walking With Blood Flow Restriction, Sage Donaldson May 2021

Acute Physiological And Perceptual Responses To Unilateral Versus Bilateral Walking With Blood Flow Restriction, Sage Donaldson

Honors Theses

The use of blood flow restriction (BFR) has skyrocketed in popularity in the past few years as a therapeutic modality. Studies have shown that the application of BFR at 20-30% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) yields similar improvements in cardiovascular fitness, muscle mass, and strength when compared with traditional exercise at 60-90% of VO2max. The substantially lower workload accompanying BFR allows for more tolerable workloads in special populations, such as those recovering from musculoskeletal injury. Because previous studies regarding BFR have mainly focused on bilateral BFR, it is unclear how unilateral BFR compares to bilateral BFR. …

Effect Of Aerobic Exercise With Blood Flow Restriction On Substrate Utilization And Energy Expenditure, Nathen Andrews May 2021

Effect Of Aerobic Exercise With Blood Flow Restriction On Substrate Utilization And Energy Expenditure, Nathen Andrews

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of intermittent blood flow restriction (BFR) compared to low- (LIIE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on energy expenditure (EE) and substrate utilization. Participants randomly performed each interval exercise protocol, and then rested for a three-hour period, in which EE and substrate utilization were measured. Total EE was different between BFR (321.6 ± 30.1 kcals), HIIE (254.5 ± 33.5 kcals), and LIIE (287.1 ± 25.5 kcals). Fat oxidation (FatOx) in BFR (1hr = 0.14 ± 0.01 g / min, 3hr = 0.11 ± 0.01 g / min) was greater than LIIE …

Decreased Activity Of Phosphofructokinase-1 In Flight Muscle Cells Of Hawk Moth Manduca Sexta With Age, Owen G. Alvine May 2021

Decreased Activity Of Phosphofructokinase-1 In Flight Muscle Cells Of Hawk Moth Manduca Sexta With Age, Owen G. Alvine

Honors Thesis

The phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1) enzyme is important for the catalyzation and regulation of glycolysis, especially in muscle. Investigating age-related changes in PFK-1 activity will provide insights into the metabolism shifts in muscle cells of our muscle aging model. The hawk moth, Manduca sexta, was chosen as the model organism because of its unique endothermic, synchronous flight muscles that are more analogous to vertebrates than invertebrate species. We hypothesized that PFK-1 activity will increase in muscle cells of aged moths due to dysregulation of the mitochondria. This was predicted to change the method of energy production, by hindering oxidative phosphorylation, making glycolysis …

A Quality Improvement Initiative To Decrease Fall Risk In Community Dwelling Elderly, Michele Shearer May 2021

A Quality Improvement Initiative To Decrease Fall Risk In Community Dwelling Elderly, Michele Shearer

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

Falls are a health concern for the elderly and are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal fall injuries in this population (Burns & Lee, 2016). Meijers, et al. (2012) found that one in three community dwelling elderly will experience at least one fall per year with an even higher rate in adults greater than 80 years old. Numbers of falls are expected to increase as this population ages. This increase in falls and their consequences will produce an enormous economic burden on the United States health care system (Burns & Lee, 2016). The purpose of this program was to …

Dual Task Study Of Cognitive And Postural Interference: Development Of A Methodology For Use In Vestibular Disorders, Valerie Beacham May 2021

Dual Task Study Of Cognitive And Postural Interference: Development Of A Methodology For Use In Vestibular Disorders, Valerie Beacham

Dissertations, 2020-current

For patients with vestibular impairments, postural stability alone can be demanding but is more taxing when an individual’s attention is focused on both maintaining balance and a secondary/cognitive task simultaneously. Thus, dual task paradigms where balance must be maintained while performing postural and cognitive tasks concurrently provides an assessment on one’s attentional resources available for balance. Previous studies show varying levels of dual task effects in patients with vestibular loss with little consistency between studies regarding choice of balance and cognitive tasks. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of a dual task paradigm using portable instrumentation …

The Motivation For Movement, Abigail Radwanski May 2021

The Motivation For Movement, Abigail Radwanski

Academic Festival

A child’s early experience and perceptions of physical activity will greatly impact their motivation levels and adherence to exercise into adulthood which will contribute to their physical and mental health in later life. Children are often introduced to exercise through gym class, participation in recreational sports, or regular outdoor activity. The functioning of a human brain has the ability to process experiences in adolescence, and these experiences impact subconscious thought and behavior in later life. The way a child perceives exercise can impact their motivational levels throughout their life regarding physical activity and the importance of staying active. Many factors …

The Impact Of Technology On The Field Of Nursing, Sarah Call

Academic Festival

Technology has increasingly made its way into most aspects of our lives and has even replaced jobs that were previously performed by people. Technology has become an everyday part of nursing practice, but it could never replace the field of nursing all together as it has for some other careers. Instead, technology has proven itself to be helpful in everyday practice by reducing error and saving time allowing nurses to provide more direct patient care as opposed to documenting and other tedious tasks. Nursing education has also been impacted and improved by the introduction of technology and virtual aspects of …

College of Agriculture

Disease susceptibility and resistance are important factors for the conservation of endangered species, including elephants. We analyzed pathology data from 26 zoos and report that Asian elephants have increased neoplasia and malignancy prevalence compared with African bush elephants. This is consistent with observed higher susceptibility to tuberculosis and elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) in Asian elephants. To investigate genetic mechanisms underlying disease resistance, including differential responses between species, among other elephant traits, we sequenced multiple elephant genomes. We report a draft assembly for an Asian elephant, and defined 862 and 1,017 conserved potential regulatory elements in Asian and African bush elephants, …

Influences Of Sleep Disturbances And Mild Traumatic Brain Injury On Gait Performance Among College Student-Athletes, Narjes Asgari

Health and Kinesiology Theses

Sleep disturbances from stress are common among college students. In addition, student-athletes in contact sports (e.g., football and soccer) are at a higher risk of receiving a mild traumatic brain injury(mTBI). Stress-related sleep disturbances and mTBI may provoke cognitive and brain changes associated with gait abnormalities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the association between stress, sleep disturbances, mTBI, and gait performance among college student-athletes. Twelve college student-athletes from men’s and women’s soccer teams who indicated a history of mTBI (experimental group) and twenty-eight college students without a history of mTBI (control group) were recruited and asked …

Introduction: West Virginia is a state in which most counties are rural, as well as a state with multiple health disparities among its population. The purpose of this study was to determine the association of sleep duration and falls for non-institutionalized West Virginia adults, aged 40 years and above, using the National Sleep Foundation’s definition of “may be appropriate” and “not recommended” sleep durations for specific ages.

Methods: Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2018 data concerning West Virginia residents were extracted for sleep duration and number of falls within the previous year. Data were analyzed with Chi square and …

Dnp Final Report: Reducing The Rate Of Falls With A Stuctured Fall Program, Elanda L. Douglas May 2021

Dnp Final Report: Reducing The Rate Of Falls With A Stuctured Fall Program, Elanda L. Douglas

DNP Final Reports

Background: Fall rates continue to be a significant problem in health care facilities despite all the research and tool kits created to prevent falls. Hospitals that have successfully reduced fall rates find it challenging to sustain a reduction in the fall rates. During hospitalizations, 3%-20% of patients fall, with 30%-50% resulting in injury (Joint Commission, [JC], 2015).

Internal Evidence: Despite Medical City Alliance (MCA) having an evidence-based fall program, the fall rate has not decreased. Falls are one of the quality measures identified at the division level that needs improvement.

PICOT: In adult patients in a progressive care unit (P), …
