Metabolic Control Of Stem Cell Ageing And Longevity Through Caloric Restriction, Valerie Navarrete Sep 2021

Metabolic Control Of Stem Cell Ageing And Longevity Through Caloric Restriction, Valerie Navarrete

The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal

While prior studies have identified recurring genetic patterns, gaps of knowledge still remain in existing aging mechanisms; where they originate, and how they offer insight to environmental disruptions that dictate health over time. Given the inescapability of age-related deterioration and pathology, stitching together current literature may help demystify the biological process common to all living mammals. The physiological disruption of aged tissue reflects a cellular dependence on environmental cues and historical wear. Retaining the capacity to differentiate into any cell type, a stem cell best parallels a call-and-response relationship between organ and cell. As the longest living proliferative cell in …

Transition Of Living Arrangement And Cognitive Impairment Status Among Chinese Older Adults: Are They Associated?, Yen-Han Lee, Chia Hung Lin, Jia Ren Chang, Ching Ti Liu, Mack Shelley, Yen Chang Chang

College of Health and Human Services

Background and Objectives: Living arrangement is a crucial factor for older adults’ health. It is even more critical for Chinese older adults due to the tradition of filial piety. With the aging of China’s population, the prevalence of cognitive impairment among older adults has increased. This study examines the association between living arrangement transition and cognitive function among Chinese older adults.

Materials and Methods: Using three waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS; 2008–2009, 2011–2012, and 2014), we analyzed data for older adults (age ≥ 65) who lived with other household members and reported good cognitive function or …

Facilitating Well-Rounded Clinical Experience For Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Students, Joan Alviar Fraino, Nancy Selix Sep 2021

Facilitating Well-Rounded Clinical Experience For Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Students, Joan Alviar Fraino, Nancy Selix

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

There is a steady increase in demand for mental health services and a lack of providers. Recent societal changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have increased these needs. Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) are well suited to offer these services. High-quality clinical PMHNP student experiences are based on well-rounded curricula in a variety of clinical settings. Meeting the need for clinical education and finding high-quality preceptors is especially challenging during the pandemic due to the lack of preceptors and access to care for in-person services. Creative approaches are needed to meet student clinical experience needs.

Evaluating The Role Of Gender In Dementia-Related Language Deficiencies, Kelsey Bourque Sep 2021

Evaluating The Role Of Gender In Dementia-Related Language Deficiencies, Kelsey Bourque

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Typically, about 60% of dementia patients are women. Researchers have historically dismissed this imbalance as a result of the life expectancy for women being longer, and since age is the primary risk factor associated with dementia, and women’s longer lifespan equates to a higher percentage of the dementia patient population (Mielke, 2018). While the exact cause of dementia is unknown, researchers and clinicians have historically treated male and female populations the same, asserting that there is no significant difference between the two sexes in regards to detecting dementia. The present study aims to address this potential gap in dementia research, …

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? Mexican Return Migration Across The Life Course, Mara G. Sheftel Sep 2021

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? Mexican Return Migration Across The Life Course, Mara G. Sheftel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Foreign-born individuals make up a growing share of older adults in the US. Older immigrants offer an important vantage point from which to investigate integration because outcomes at older ages can be considered “final” measures providing empirical evidence for theoretical understandings of the forces impacting immigrant trajectories. However, considering the non-negligible portion of immigrants that ultimately return to their country of origin it is impossible to get the full range of immigrant outcomes without considering returnees. Further, patterns of return may differ across the life course with distinct economic, social, and health considerations at older ages. However, the impact of …

Facilitating Aging In Place And Community By Empowering Participation In Society: A Mixed Methods Study On The Co-Development Of A Theory Of Change With Suburban-Dwelling Older Adults, Emily Balog

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: Baby boomers are steadily aging in America and represent an increased population in nearly every sector. In suburban communities today, older adults make up 51% of the population. Ninety-five percent of all older adults live in community settings and have expressed a desire to avoid costly institutionalization and to remain in their homes and communities, also called aging in place. Older adults in moderate income suburban communities are increasingly at a higher risk for institutionalization should their health or finances decline as the access to their wealth is within the home in which they dwell. This process …

Inflammation In Older Adults: Stress, Depression, And Aces, Kerianne Kramer Sep 2021

Inflammation In Older Adults: Stress, Depression, And Aces, Kerianne Kramer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Studies conducted on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have shown that childhood adversity is relatively common, likely to co-occur, and have dose-dependent relationships with mental and physical health in adulthood. People with a history of ACEs are likely to experience dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to increased inflammation production, greater stress reactivity, and decreased serotonin production. This longitudinal study explored the role depression and perceived stress have in the relationship between ACEs and inflammation while controlling for demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity, education, difficulty meeting expenses). The study sample included 288 (61% female, 66% white, Mage = 68, …

Death In Genetic Algorithms, Micah Burkhardt, Roman Yampolskiy Sep 2021

Death In Genetic Algorithms, Micah Burkhardt, Roman Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Death has long been overlooked in evolutionary algorithms. Recent research has shown that death (when applied properly) can benefit the overall fitness of a population and can outperform sub-sections of a population that are “immortal” when allowed to evolve together in an environment [1]. In this paper, we strive to experimentally determine whether death is an adapted trait and whether this adaptation can be used to enhance our implementations of conventional genetic algorithms. Using some of the most widely accepted evolutionary death and aging theories, we observed that senescent death (in various forms) can lower the total run-time of genetic …
