Casting A Critical Lens On Global Development: A Multimethod Investigation Of The Masculine Hegemonic Forces That Marginalize Women In Agriculture, Morgan Alyse Richardson Gilley Nov 2021

Casting A Critical Lens On Global Development: A Multimethod Investigation Of The Masculine Hegemonic Forces That Marginalize Women In Agriculture, Morgan Alyse Richardson Gilley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A critical link between gender equality and agricultural development has been established in the literature. However, disparities between genders have persisted in many areas of the developing world. One strategy that has been used to reduce gender inequalities has been educational outreach opportunities through agricultural extension, which has provided women a critical pathway to empowerment. Despite this, a lack of knowledge on the experiences of women in agriculture throughout Southeast Asia has served as a barrier to the advancement of such work. This investigation sought to better understand the issues facing this region’s fight to attain gender equality. To achieve …

Can Preference Policies Advance Racial Justice?, Amie Thurber, Lisa K. Bates, Susan Halverson Nov 2021

Can Preference Policies Advance Racial Justice?, Amie Thurber, Lisa K. Bates, Susan Halverson

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mitigating the harms of gentrification to communities of color is a pressing challenge. One promising approach is preference policies that enable long-term residents to remain in or return to gentrifying neighborhoods. This mixed-methods study evaluates the City of Portland’s “Preference Policy,” which provides targeted affordable rental housing to residents displaced from a historically Black neighborhood. This paper draws on survey, interview, and focus group data to explore resident motivations, changes to well-being, and recommendations for improving the policy. Findings suggest preference policies can enhance well-being, and underscore the need for comprehensive strategies to advance racial justice in gentrifying neighborhoods.

Video Games In Music Education: The Impact Of Video Games On Rhythmic Performance, Kevin R. Keeler Jr. Nov 2021

Video Games In Music Education: The Impact Of Video Games On Rhythmic Performance, Kevin R. Keeler Jr.

Visions of Research in Music Education

Little research exists on the use of video games as instructional tools in music education. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the effects of two different video games on rhythm performance and to determine whether the level of flow achieved during the games had an impact on the results. Collegiate music students (N = 8) participated in an experiment comparing the effects of a traditional video game and a virtual reality video game. While I did not find any statistically significant changes, results imply some practical significance. While educators may wish to implement video games as tools …

The Music Teacher In The Mirror: Factors Of Music Student-Teacher Self-Efficacy, Lauren Sander Nov 2021

The Music Teacher In The Mirror: Factors Of Music Student-Teacher Self-Efficacy, Lauren Sander

Visions of Research in Music Education

This study examined the factors affecting the self-efficacy in music student-teachers throughout their student teaching experience as a means to improve the strategic plan of the music student teaching experience. Bandura's self-efficacy theory and its dimensions provided the theoretical framework. The data sources included a series of interviews of seven music student-teachers and the researcher's observations of the student teaching seminar classes. This study found that four physiological factors affected the self-efficacy levels of student-teachers: Readiness from Curriculum, Surrounding Challenges, Stress Coping and Hindering Mechanisms, and Constructive Criticism. Discussion included a connection to Bandura's selfefficacy theory as well as implications …

Factors Influencing Pre-Instructional Decisions: An Initial Investigation Of Expert Music Teacher Perceptions, Daniel C. Johnson, Wendy K. Matthews Nov 2021

Factors Influencing Pre-Instructional Decisions: An Initial Investigation Of Expert Music Teacher Perceptions, Daniel C. Johnson, Wendy K. Matthews

Visions of Research in Music Education

Pre-instructional decisions that teachers make fundamentally and directly influence their students’ music learning. Particularly with expert educators, as defined by their professional qualifications and education, these decisions reveal teachers’ motivations and pedagogical reasoning. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to examine pre-instructional decisionmaking from the perspective of expert music teachers, as framed by these two research questions: (1) which factors have more influence on pre-instructional decision-making among expert music teachers? and (2) what are the differences in pre-instructional decision-making by expert teachers in terms of teacher characteristics (gender and teaching experience) and educational setting (teaching level and musical context)? …

America’S Most Divided Sport: Polarization And Inequality In Attitudes About Youth Football, Andrew M. Lindner, Daniel Hawkins Nov 2021

America’S Most Divided Sport: Polarization And Inequality In Attitudes About Youth Football, Andrew M. Lindner, Daniel Hawkins

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Football may be America’s most popular sport, but with growing evidence of the risk of sport-associated concussions, some adults are reconsidering which sports to encourage children to play. Using data from a nationally representative sample of 958 respondents, we examine how political party, belief in patriotic displays in sport, attention to concussion news, social class, and race are associated with support for children playing each of the five major U.S. sports: baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, and football. Our findings suggest that unlike other sports, attitudes about youth participation in football are divided by views on patriotism in sport, age, race, …

Early Implementation Of A Standards-Based Mathematics Curriculum: Understanding Teacher Perspectives And Concerns, Karen Ann Prigodich Nov 2021

Early Implementation Of A Standards-Based Mathematics Curriculum: Understanding Teacher Perspectives And Concerns, Karen Ann Prigodich

Dissertations and Theses

Standards-based mathematics curricula are intended to shape teachers' classroom instruction in alignment with the content and practices of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Instructional leaders facilitating teachers' implementation of these curricula frequently offer a variety of resources and structures to support effective curriculum use, but teachers themselves do not always find these supports to be helpful. Because teachers' concerns vary, understanding teachers' own perspectives is an important starting place for aligning support with teachers' needs. This case study explored the concerns of teachers from three U.S. school districts during their first year of implementing Bridges in Mathematics, …

Black Suburbanization: Causes And Consequences Of A Transformation Of American Cities, Alexander W. Bartik, Evan Mast Nov 2021

Black Suburbanization: Causes And Consequences Of A Transformation Of American Cities, Alexander W. Bartik, Evan Mast

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Since 1970, the share of Black individuals living in suburbs of large cities has risen from 16 to 36 percent. This shift is as large as the post-World War II wave of the Great Migration. We first show that Black suburbanization has led to major changes in neighborhoods, accounting for a large share of recent increases in both the average Black individual’s neighborhood quality and within-Black income segregation. We then show that changes in relative suburban amenities and housing prices explain about 60 and 30 percent, respectively, of Black suburbanization, while regional reallocation, changing educational attainment, and gentrification play only …

Sno 2020 Diversity Survey: Defining Demographics, Racial Biases, Career Success Metrics And A Path Forward For The Field Of Neuro-Oncology, Yazmin Odia

All Publications

Background. Neuro-oncology has grown tremendously since 2010, marked by increasing society membership, specialized clinical expertise, and new journals. Yet, modest improvement in racial/ethnic diversity amongst clinical trial participants, researchers, and clinicians led us to conduct a survey to identify opportunities to enhance diversity and inclusiveness amongst neuro-oncology professionals. Methods. In summer 2020, the Women and Diversity Committee of the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO) distributed an anonymous online survey to members and affiliates including the European Association of NeuroOncology (EANO), Asian Society for Neuro-Oncology (ASNO), Society for Neuro-Oncology Latin America (SNOLA) and Society for Neuro-Oncology Sub-Saharan Africa (SNOSSA). The survey captured …

Using The Labyrinth To Foster Community Prayer And Devotion, Denice F. Knight-Slater Nov 2021

Using The Labyrinth To Foster Community Prayer And Devotion, Denice F. Knight-Slater

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

While excellent resources are available to teach people how to use labyrinths in personal ways, there are fewer guides available for seeking Christian community awareness using that same tool. This essay seeks to explore the value of a labyrinth as a sacred space, and it offers several novel suggestions for incorporating the labyrinth into the rhythms of the church. Although very little is known about how medieval Christians utilized the labyrinth, today’s Christians can still experience God in those same spaces. People need physical spaces in which they can gather in unexpected ways—places where they can explore their spiritual creativity …

Poverty In A North American Context, Nathanael Snow, Benjamin Pettus Nov 2021

Poverty In A North American Context, Nathanael Snow, Benjamin Pettus

White Papers

From the Introduction

Understanding the impact of poverty can be aided by careful measurement. Statisticians and economists, both within the government and in the private sector, collect and analyze such statistics.

Disagreement about the interpretation of those figures can make it difficult for most people to know how they should respond to specific cases of poverty they encounter. For a meaningful discussion to take place, the existing understanding should be presented. This report summarizes the existing research on poverty and provides the interested reader with resources to continue learning about the topic. This report does not offer policy advice or …

The Contemporary Situation Of Elderly People In Ethiopia And The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, Tsigewengel B. Uddo

Master of Art Theology Thesis

Uddo Tsigewengel B. “The Contemporary Situation of Elderly People in Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus.” MA Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2022. 100pp.

The Church is God’s agent to serve God’s people in the church and society at large. The scope of the Church’s ministry comprises all ages: young, adult, and elderly. Culturally, in Ethiopia, children and close family members are responsible for caring for the elderly, therefore, the church has not given satisfactory attention to holistic elderly care. Moreover, current societal change and globalization have negatively affected the indigenous family-support system for the elderly. As a result, many …

The Role Of Stem-Based Sustainability In Business And Management Curricula: Exploring Cognitive And Affective Outcomes In University Students, Christopher Craig, Elizabeth L. Petrun Sayers, Susan Gilbertz, Rita Karam, Song Feng

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

To address deficiencies in STEM and sustainability in business management and intra-university curricula, we developed and implemented an interdisciplinary STEM-based sustainability curriculum at a university in the Western United States. Six classes participated in curricular efforts including in-person and online sections of a business management course, in-person and online sections of a general elective STEM course, and a matched control course for each (n = 214). We systematically designed, developed, and implemented curricular interventions—multi-week STEM-based business sustainability modules—using the case teaching method. A comprehensive evaluation with pre- and post-tests was conducted to assess student sustainability cognition and affect. Significant results …

The need for a comprehensive, high-quality pipeline for the development of undergraduate pre-service teachers, especially those that represent a diverse student body, within STEM disciplines is acute. Here, we studied the NoyceSCIENCE program to determine the most impactful experiences offered to undergraduates through the lens of student development theory. We used qualitative coding to analyze data collected from journals (n = 29) written by students of varying backgrounds, and at varying levels within the program (i.e., the Scholar and Intern level) over a 3-year program running period. We observed that faculty mentorship, the ability of undergraduates to mentor others, volunteer …

California Coastal Recreation: Beyond The Beach, Charles S. Colgan, Philip King, Sarah Jenkins Nov 2021

California Coastal Recreation: Beyond The Beach, Charles S. Colgan, Philip King, Sarah Jenkins

Publications

California is known throughout the state, nation, and world for its beaches, but the California coast provides so much more in recreational opportunities than just a day at the beach. However, if one were to ask: “How many people actually visit the coast for recreation”, the answer is “No one really knows”.

The reason is simple. No one asks this question on a regular basis. Extensive monitoring of the physical conditions of the coast and coastal waters takes place but nothing remotely comparable is done to track the millions of people who come to the coast.

Because there is no …

“This Was 1976 Reinvented”: The Role Of Framing In The Development Of A South African Youth Movement, Ben Kirshner, Tafadzwa Tivaringe, Jesica S. Fernández

Ethnic Studies

The literature on contemporary youth organizing has documented psychological benefits associated with participation and some evidence of local political impact. But how do local organizing campaigns transform into regional or national movements? This is a practical question facing youth organizers and one that calls for attention from researchers. In this article, we draw on 3 years of ethnographic fieldwork with South Africa's Equal Education (EE) to analyze collective action frames that enabled EE youth to assert legitimacy and construct shared aims across locales. Our findings focus on how youth constructed historical continuity frames that lent them legitimacy as upholders of …

There are numerous publications demonstrating that plant polyphenols can reduce oxi-dative stress and inflammatory processes in the brain. In the present study we have investigated the neuroprotective effect of plant extract isolated from the roots of L. gmelinii since it contains a rich source of polyphenols and other biologically active compounds. We have applied an oxidative and inflammatory model induced by NMDA, H2O2, and TNF‐α in human primary neurons and astrocytes, and mouse cerebral endothelial cell (CECs) line in vitro. The levels of ROS generation, NADPH oxidase activation, P‐selectin expression, and activity of ERK1/2 were evaluated by quan-titative immunofluorescence analysis, …
