Building Bridges: How Collaboration Is Addressing Wildlife-Vehicle Conflicts In Montana's Upper Yellowstone Watershed, Daniel Phelps Anderson
Building Bridges: How Collaboration Is Addressing Wildlife-Vehicle Conflicts In Montana's Upper Yellowstone Watershed, Daniel Phelps Anderson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In my first semester of graduate studies at the University of Montana – Fall, 2019 – I was given an assignment from one of my professors to research a “landscape-scale” conflict of my choosing and compose a professional memo that could be sent to key influencers or stakeholders tied to the issue. Naturally, I directed my attention to a community I know and love, the Upper Yellowstone, and a conflict that is ubiquitous across the West: Wildlife-Vehicle Conflicts (WVCs).
In the pages that follow I describe how Yellowstone Safe Passages came to be, who is involved, and the steps we …
Common Raven Nesting And Spatial Distancing On Power Lines In Southeast Idaho, Usa, Quinn R. Shurtliff, Jericho C. Whiting
Common Raven Nesting And Spatial Distancing On Power Lines In Southeast Idaho, Usa, Quinn R. Shurtliff, Jericho C. Whiting
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Common raven (Corvus corax; raven) abundance and distribution have increased in western North America in recent decades, facilitated by anthropogenic subsidies and other environmental changes. Electrical power transmission line structures provide nesting substrates for ravens. When these structures transect landscapes where natural nest substrates are limited, they may facilitate raven predation on eggs and juveniles of sensitive avian and reptile species. Little information is available regarding raven nest density trends on adjacent power lines or how raven territorial behavior influences spatial partitioning of nests, and hence, nest density. This knowledge would be valuable for managers of sensitive prey …

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
This paper highlights how coursework within a synchronous online mathematics specialist program enhanced candidates’ leadership knowledge and provided structures that addressed issues of equity and access. A focus on one online assignment grounded in Lesson Study played a pivotal role in developing equity-centered leadership and instructional practices. Program instructors and recent alumni illuminate how designing, implementing, and reflecting on the Lesson Study experience served as a cornerstone for advancing their mathematics instruction in the following ways: (a) as instructors designing an online leadership course, (b) as learners within an online environment, and (c) as educators within their K–8 school settings. …
Moving Towards Accurate And Early Prediction Of Language Delay With Network Science And Machine Learning Approaches, Arielle Borovsky, Donna Thal, Laurence B. Leonard
Moving Towards Accurate And Early Prediction Of Language Delay With Network Science And Machine Learning Approaches, Arielle Borovsky, Donna Thal, Laurence B. Leonard
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Due to wide variability of typical language development, it has been historically difficult to distinguish typical and delayed trajectories of early language growth. Improving our understanding of factors that signal language disorder and delay has the potential to improve the lives of the millions with developmental language disorder (DLD). We develop predictive models of low language (LL) outcomes by analyzing parental report measures of early language skill using machine learning and network science approaches. We harmonized two longitudinal datasets including demographic and standardized measures of early language skills (the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Developmental Inventories; MBCDI) as well as a later measure …

Age, Political Affiliation, And Political Polarization In The United States, Anton Glocar
Age, Political Affiliation, And Political Polarization In The United States, Anton Glocar
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This study analyzes the relationship between voter age and party affiliation with political polarization in the form of feelings towards both one’s own party and the opposing party. Using data from the 2020 American National Election Survey, the favorability ratings of voters from both parties towards both their own party and the opposing party were analyzed and grouped based on voter age. The results of this analysis indicate that positive feelings towards one’s own party and negative feelings towards the opposing party, and therefore polarization, tend to increase as age increases.
Stratigraphy And Geochemistry Of Paleocene-Aged Bauxites From North Mississippi, Timothy Brendan Clark
Stratigraphy And Geochemistry Of Paleocene-Aged Bauxites From North Mississippi, Timothy Brendan Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bauxite is a heavily-mined aluminum ore that forms through the relative depletion of silica to aluminum. In North Mississippi, bauxite occurring within the Upper Midway and Lower Wilcox groups has been the subject of study for over a century. Despite the abundance and duration of research, controversy surrounds the subjects of bauxite genesis and economic value. The last detailed study of North Mississippi bauxite was in the 1980’s, so the goal of this project is to apply newly available technologies and modern hypotheses on bauxite formation to refine and obtain new data. Fieldwork observations yielded pisoliths, horizonation, and possible rhizoliths, …

Religiously focused programming at these faith-based institutions is intended to support students’ academic relationships and success.
The Meat Of The Gothic: Animality And Social Justice In United States Fiction And Film Of The Twenty-First Century, Amber Hodge
The Meat Of The Gothic: Animality And Social Justice In United States Fiction And Film Of The Twenty-First Century, Amber Hodge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Meat of the Gothic: Animality and Social Justice in United States Fiction and Film of the Twenty-First Century— situates twenty-first century US gothic narratives in relation to animal studies, even as it illuminates how these narratives interrogate the effects of historic and ongoing global systems of human oppression: slavery, imperialism, and capitalism. Instead of reacting to bias by asserting a claim to a humanity perpetually imbricated in divisions of class, race, and gender, present-day authors and filmmakers create characters who form communities that include nonhuman actors as a means of generating empowerment and critique. My approach to these narratives …
Economic Development Policy And Economic Growth In The American States, Mohammed Shariful Islam
Economic Development Policy And Economic Growth In The American States, Mohammed Shariful Islam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The American states routinely adopt various economic development policies but those policies do not always contribute to economic growth in the state. Scholars identify several reasons to explain why the policies do not always work. First, policies that do not address market demand; rather, provide economic incentives to bring inward industrial investments do not contribute to economic growth because the cost it takes to create jobs by such industrial recruitments is too high. Second, policies that are adopted out of inertia chosen from traditionally practiced policies do not work because they are not evaluated for their effectiveness in terms of …

Background
Medication non-adherence is a problem of critical importance, affecting approximately 50% of all persons taking at least one regularly scheduled prescription medication and costing the United States more than $100 billion annually. Traditional data sources for identifying and resolving medication non-adherence in community pharmacies include prescription fill histories. However, medication possession does not necessarily mean patients are taking their medications as prescribed. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs), measuring adherence challenges pertaining to both remembering and intention to take medication, offer a rich data source for pharmacists and prescribers to use to resolve medication non-adherence. PatientToc™ is a PROs collection software developed …
The Course Scheduling Problem With Room Considerations, Lijian Xiao
The Course Scheduling Problem With Room Considerations, Lijian Xiao
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The course scheduling problem (CSP), more commonly referred to as the university timetabling problem, belongs to the larger family of general scheduling problems, where the aim is to assign students, faculties, exams, or lectures to a limited number of rooms over time in accordance under real-world constraints. Such problems are known to be NP-complete and have been the subject of study for the optimization society for many decades. This research extends the classical CSP to the CSP with Room Considerations (CSP-R) by incorporating two room-related considerations; cohort-to-room preference and topic-to-room preference. While the former refers to students in each cohort …

Impact Of Covid-19 On Ohio's National Parks Visitation, Ryan Grzeschik
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed the way in which society operates in order to get the novel disease under control. Businesses throughout the United States have had to close or reduce provided services, stay at home orders have secluded many people, and social distancing limits contact between others so many are turning to the parks system to cope with these changes. This study aims to find how the visitation of national parks in Ohio have been affected through the first six months of the pandemic. Visitation statistics were compared from March to August of 2020 to those same months …
A Teacher’S Perspective On The Effectiveness Of Homework At Various Grade Levels, Harlee Garlock
A Teacher’S Perspective On The Effectiveness Of Homework At Various Grade Levels, Harlee Garlock
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This project centers around research on and discussion about current teachers’ perspective on homework. Data was gathered using an online survey that was sent to a high school and an elementary school. The intent was to draw attention to how each school responded; more specifically how the answers between schools differed. Can we conclude that homework is more beneficial to students in a particular age group? The people who are most qualified to answer that question are those who track student progress daily. An essential part of teaching is assessing student understanding and using the results to direct the instruction …

With the increasing penetration levels of renewable energy resources in power systems, to realize efficient energy management, energy storage systems have become indispensable. This research aims at analyzing the impact of energy storage systems on electricity markets, especially the impact on electricity prices, and developing strategies to dynamically dispatch the available storage resources for energy management. Marginal generation units as the generators that determine the system-wide electricity prices are theoretically analyzed in this research. The electricity price of any node in the system is approximately an affine combination of the bidding prices of the marginal generation units if the power …
Methods For Ad Hoc And Conversational Entity Retrieval From Knowledge Graphs, Fedor Nikolaev
Methods For Ad Hoc And Conversational Entity Retrieval From Knowledge Graphs, Fedor Nikolaev
Wayne State University Dissertations
The recent years have witnessed the increase in popularity of knowledge graphs in various applications, such as information extraction and retrieval systems, and intelligent assistants. Traditionally, retrieval from knowledge graphs is performed by submitting queries in SPARQL, a rigid query language based on triple patterns and logical operations. In this work, we propose several approaches to ad hoc and conversational entity retrieval that transcend the limitations of this approach by allowing the user to either submit queries using natural language in an ad hoc retrieval setting or have a conversation with an intelligent retrieval system by asking a series of …

Emergence Of The Connectivist Leadership Paradigm: A Grounded Theory Study In The Asia Region, Frederique Covington Corbett
Emergence Of The Connectivist Leadership Paradigm: A Grounded Theory Study In The Asia Region, Frederique Covington Corbett
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative, grounded theory study focused on the exploration of leadership arising within the Asia region. While enduring leadership qualities like strength, humility, resolve, and trust have been foundational in leadership practice globally, scholars have demonstrated that leadership does not exist in absolute terms; it is shaped by the values of local culture, which set expectations for leadership behaviors. This study explored the conceptualization of a more collective and connected form of leadership in the context of a region leading the world with highly networked digital social practices. The question the study explored was, if, and to what extent, leaders …
The Impact Of A Management Company’S Scale On Hotel Market Value, Gil Keinan
The Impact Of A Management Company’S Scale On Hotel Market Value, Gil Keinan
Theses and Dissertations
The choice of management structure is growing in importance for hotel owners. Most owners’ investment theses are based on an attractive acquisition basis, focusing on net cash flow and the sales exit. Depending on the market, transaction price may be influenced by asset level performance which is highly influenced by daily revenue and expense decisions. Hotel brands quantify their value via measures that include market share and loyalty of a customer base. While much research has been conducted on the impact of brands on market value, the influence of hotel management on resale value has not been well investigated. This …
Teachers Perceptions Of Using Young Adult Literature As A Catalyst To Discuss Social Justice In Mississippi Classrooms, Shimikqua Ellis
Teachers Perceptions Of Using Young Adult Literature As A Catalyst To Discuss Social Justice In Mississippi Classrooms, Shimikqua Ellis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT Educational inequality and racial injustice are serious challenges that educators continue to face. More educators are seeking social justice teaching practices and implementing culturally responsive pedagogies to address systemic inequities in schools. Literary scholars suggest that books should serve as mirrors and windows for readers. Diverse young adult literature is a powerful medium through which social injustices, racial inequities, and social problems can be addressed in the classroom. This study is designed to help teachers create a more inclusive classroom through using adolescent literature. Four teachers in diverse schools throughout Mississippi used The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas …
Designing For Democracy: How Democratizing States Design International Organizations, Marissa Wyant
Designing For Democracy: How Democratizing States Design International Organizations, Marissa Wyant
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Building on work by Paul Poast and Johannes Urpelainen that suggests that democratizing states are more likely to form new international governmental organizations rather than join existing ones, I ask the question: how do these states design the organizations they form, and how do those design choices compare to the choices made by consolidated democracies and by nondemocracies? I focus on three design choices made by states regarding membership constraints, voting procedures, and dispute resolution processes. By comparing and analyzing founding charters, I find that democratizing states were more likely to constrain access to membership into these organizations to regional …

Information And Policy Innovation In U.S. States, Scott J. Lacombe, Caroline Tolbert, Karen Mossberger
Government: Faculty Publications
Information is a critically important, yet hard to measure, component on policy innovation across state governments. Widespread use of broadband has made it easier for governments to observe other actors, increasing the amount of policy information, while also diversifying the sources of information available to policymakers. This should translate into making governments more innovative over time and quicker to adapt to challenges. At the same time, the Internet may disrupt previous existing flows of information by decreasing the importance of geographic proximity and creating more nationalized or global information networks. We argue that the growth of broadband has made states …
Civil Disobedience, And What Else? Making Space For Uncivil Forms Of Resistance, Erin Pineda
Civil Disobedience, And What Else? Making Space For Uncivil Forms Of Resistance, Erin Pineda
Government: Faculty Publications
Theorists of political obligation have long devoted special attention to civil disobedience, establishing its pride of place as an object of philosophical analysis, and as one of a short list of exceptions to an otherwise binding obligation to obey the law. Yet all of this attention to civil disobedience has left the broader terrain of resistance to injustice relatively under-theorized. What other forms of action are justifiable – even required – in the face of systemic injustice? Candice Delmas’ A Duty to Resist: When Disobedience Should Be Uncivil offers an original and powerful defense of the idea that we have …
