Answers In The East: An Examination Of China's Renewable Energy And Its Application To Central Appalachia, Lillian Hamm
Answers In The East: An Examination Of China's Renewable Energy And Its Application To Central Appalachia, Lillian Hamm
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
While much of China’s electrification has depended on coal, recent decades illustrate the country is heavily investing in and implementing renewable energy as a power source. Even China’s coal-rich provinces, like the northeastern province of Shanxi, have been making the transition to renewable energy. The central Appalachian states comprised of eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, western Virginia, and northeastern Tennessee share many characteristics with China’s Shanxi province including economic resources, climate, and geography. Yet, central Appalachia has not been able to easily transition to renewable energy. However, there are various cultural, political, and technological differences between the two regions to explain …
Diasporic Longings, Bakirathi Mani
Diasporic Longings, Bakirathi Mani
English Literature Faculty Works
Using diaspora as a framework for reading Asian American literature expands the geographical and temporal contours of what it means to be Asian American. Although late-twentieth-century US popular culture was marked by multicultural ideologies of American citizenship, “diaspora” captures another way of thinking about Asian Americans: as immigrants who are subject to multiple projects of nationalism, and who embody diverse forms of citizenship. Whereas writers like Bharati Mukherjee reproduce dominant ideologies of US exceptionalism and multicultural citizenship, for writers such as Meena Alexander, the production of diasporic locality ripples across generations, as she ties together South Asia with North America, …
Practice Makes Perfect: The Volume-Outcome Association In Pediatric Stoma Closure Surgery, Stephen P. Sales
Practice Makes Perfect: The Volume-Outcome Association In Pediatric Stoma Closure Surgery, Stephen P. Sales
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Children with anorectal malformations often receive a temporary colostomy or ileostomy before surgical repair of the anomaly to divert stool and allow their anatomy time to heal. Once their bodies have healed, the stoma is taken down, a standard procedure for pediatric general surgeons. However, for decades, stoma takedown surgery has been associated with a high risk of postoperative complications. This study seeks to determine if hospital prior-year stoma closure case volume influences pediatric patients' quality outcome measures. Population. This study identified 340 pediatric patients having undergone stoma closure surgery during the study period at hospitals in a representative sample …

Predicting Hpv Vaccination Coverage Rates Using Indicators Of Health Department Clinic Access: A Case Study With South Carolina And Georgia, Ashley A. White
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Since its introduction in 2006, the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine has made substantial developments. The use of the vaccine was expanded to include males. The completion dose series was decreased from three to two shots, if started before the age of 15. The cost of the vaccine is fully covered by private insurance and public programs for various ages ranging from 9 to 26 years old1. With these improvements the HPV vaccine has the capability to safely and significantly prevent and reduce many cancers that cause the deaths of women and men across the United 1,2. Therefore, the underuse …
The Great Southern Buy-Back: The Colony Of Western Australia And The Great Southern Railway 1880-1897, Thomas Goode
The Great Southern Buy-Back: The Colony Of Western Australia And The Great Southern Railway 1880-1897, Thomas Goode
Theses
This thesis examines the circumstances surrounding the building of the Great Southern Railway as a land-grant railway in the colony of Western Australia in the 1880s and its purchase by the government in 1896. In the early 1880s the steamship companies bringing mail and passengers from overseas and the eastern colonies, preferred Albany to Fremantle, adding an uncomfortable three to four day journey to the capital Perth. To overcome this difficulty, the government proposed to build a railway from Albany to the existing network at Beverley. This railway was to be funded by grants of land to the private company …
Prisoners, Power And Panopticon: Investigating Fremantle Gaol, 1831-1841, Emily Lanman
Prisoners, Power And Panopticon: Investigating Fremantle Gaol, 1831-1841, Emily Lanman
Theses
The history of crime and punishment is intertwined with Australia’s colonisation, including the foundation of the Swan River Colony in 1829. It can be demonstrated that Jeremy Bentham’s writings on criminal reform, specifically through his work on the panopticon model prison, influenced the development of punishment and prisons in the colony. This is evident in the construction of Fremantle Gaol (1831), which was built on the principles set forth by the panopticon and provides an interesting insight into what was deemed important in the penal system the colony continued to establish between 1831 and 1841. While Fremantle Gaol conformed to …
Australian Literary Fascists, 1905-1945 : A Comparative Case Study Into The Development Of Fascist Ideology In Australia, Adrian Keri
Theses
Historians of fascism and the far-right in Australia have generally focused on the role of material factors to the neglect of the role of ideas. Certainly, the history of ideas can never be divorced from the ‘concrete’ factors of politics and economics. But in the case of William Baylebridge (1883-1942), William Hardy Wilson (1881-1955), and Randolph William Hughes (1889-1955), ideas played a definite and decisive role in their embrace of fascism as the solution to society’s ills. They were artists and intellectuals in the so-called ‘vitalist’ tradition, drawing on the ideas of such thinkers as Hegel, Bergson, and Nietzsche, among …
Together | Apart: Printmaking And The Space Between, Monique Bosshard Curby
Together | Apart: Printmaking And The Space Between, Monique Bosshard Curby
Theses
In this practice-led creative research, being both artist and identical twin, I examine sameness and difference in the relationships between two people and between multiple objects/creative works. Through the inherent ability of printmaking processes to produce multiples and the attendant installation opportunities created by punctuated space, I unfold and re-tell a doubled and ambiguous understanding of being in the world. Martin Heidegger’s notion of Being-in-the-world (Dasein) underpins and situates my understanding of being in the world, thrown into a world as an individual, and my existence as a double: being in the world with others. I relate his thinking through …

Patents As Signal Of Quality In Crowdfunding, Christopher A. Cotropia
Patents As Signal Of Quality In Crowdfunding, Christopher A. Cotropia
Law Faculty Publications
Patents and crowdfunding both attempt to foster early stage innovations. In theory, patents signal quality and value to attract investment and buyers and ultimately facilitate commercialization. Crowdfunding allows multiple individuals to make small contributions to finance start-up ventures. This Article reports on two related studies investigating the interaction between these two innovation tools by determining the impact of a crowdfunding campaign’s patent status on the campaign’s success and delivery. The first study examines 9,184 Kickstarter campaigns in patent-eligible categories to determine whether patented or patent-pending labeled projects are more likely to reach their funding goal and in turn achieve actual, …
Three Observations About The Worst Of The Worst, Virginia-Style, Corinna Lain
Three Observations About The Worst Of The Worst, Virginia-Style, Corinna Lain
Law Faculty Publications
Much could be said about Virginia’s historic decision to repeal the death penalty, and Professor Klein’s essay provides a wonderful starting point for any number of important discussions. We could talk about how the decision came to be. Or why the move is so momentous. Or what considerations were particularly important in the decision‑making process. Or where we should go from here. But in this brief comment, I’ll be focusing not on the how, or the why, or the what, or the where, but rather on the who. Who are condemned inmates, both generally and Virginia‑style?
Statistical Methods For Evaluating Confounding In Nutritional Epidemiology: Examining The Association Of Dietary Measures And Incident Type 2 Diabetes, Stephanie E. Tison
Statistical Methods For Evaluating Confounding In Nutritional Epidemiology: Examining The Association Of Dietary Measures And Incident Type 2 Diabetes, Stephanie E. Tison
All ETDs from UAB
Nutrition is a key factor in the development of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer, which are continuing to increase globally. Research on dietary patterns is crucial for informing what aspects of diet are most critical for preventing and possibly reversing chronic disease. Dietary patterns focus on the types of food that are consumed which reflects the complexity and cultural aspects of diet rather than focusing on a single food or nutrient. Observational cohort studies are able to observe typical dietary intake and thus better reflect the real association between diet and chronic disease. In …

Assessing Indicators And Limitations Of Food Security Objectives In Coral Reef Restoration, Jessica Vandenberg, Austin Humphries, Carlos Garcia-Quijanoa, Amelia Moore, Richard Pollnac, Suparman Abdullah
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
Coral reef restoration is often presented as a marine conservation solution that provides 'win-win' outcomes. However, most studies on reef restoration have focused on the biological success, while little is known about whether social objectives are ever achieved. This study investigates a reef restoration initiative in the Spermonde archipelago, Indonesia, where food security was initially presented as an intended social outcome. We utilised an ethnographic mixed-methods approach to investigate: 1) perceived sociocultural benefits of coral restoration to the local community; 2) impacts of reef restoration on local food security; and 3) local sociocultural barriers and limitations of reef restoration as …

Profitable Retail Customer Identification Based On A Combined Prediction Strategy Of Customer Lifetime Value, Yinglu Sun, Dong Cheng, Subir Bandyopadhyay, Wei Xue
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
As a fundamental concept of customer relationship management, customer lifetime value (CLV) serves as a crucial metric to identify profitable retail customers. Various methods are available to predict CLV in different contexts. With the development of consumer big data, modern statistics and machine learning algorithms have been gradually adopted in CLV modeling. We introduce two machine learning algorithms—the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) and the random forest (RF)—in retail customer CLV modeling and compare their predictive performance with two classical models—the Pareto/NBD (HB) and the Pareto/GGG. To ensure CLV prediction and customer identification robustness, we combined the predictions of the …

Teacher Evaluation In The Christian School Setting: A Program Evaluation Of The T.E.S.T. Program, Mark Apgar
Doctor of Education Dissertations
Since the early 1800s, various educational experts and philosophers have contributed to an ever-growing database regarding teacher evaluation. This valuable research has been instrumental in shaping teacher evaluation in our public schools as we know it today. While much research has taken place in public schools, there has been limited research conducted in the private Christian school setting. This research was in response to the limited research data available and sought to identify best practices regarding teacher evaluation in the Christian school setting. The T.E.S.T. (Teacher Evaluation, Support, and Training) program is a teacher evaluation program specifically designed for implementation …
Efficient Envelope Designs To Maximize Residential Cooling Energy Savings In Bangkok Neighborhoods, Natthaumporn Inprom, Daranee Jareemit
Efficient Envelope Designs To Maximize Residential Cooling Energy Savings In Bangkok Neighborhoods, Natthaumporn Inprom, Daranee Jareemit
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Architectural design can significantly improve home energy-efficiency. New energy-saving techniques are regularly proposed; however, integrating all design parameters into the energy simulation specific knowledge and is time-consuming, making it difficult for non-experts in building energy analysis. This present study investigates the impact of envelope designs on household cooling energy consumption in housing complexes located in Bangkok neighborhood areas. The study selects a representative house and identifies a range of envelope designs, including thermal properties of exterior walls and roof, painted color, length of roof eaves, and window-to-wall ratio (WWR). The Latin hypercube method randomly generates two hundred sets of design …
Does The Primacy System Work?: State Versus Federal Implementation Of The Clean Water Act, Luke Fowler, Chris Birdsall
Does The Primacy System Work?: State Versus Federal Implementation Of The Clean Water Act, Luke Fowler, Chris Birdsall
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the United States, environmental federalism largely relies on a system for policy implementation that allows the federal government to delegate primary program authority (or primacy) to state agencies. Although it is an ingrained feature of several major federal environmental policies, such as the Clean Water Act (CWA), there is little evidence to indicate what impact delegating authorities has on programs. In order to examine this, the authors use a synthetic control technique to determine how actual CWA program outcomes in five states compare to expected outcomes if EPA retained primary authority. Findings indicate that while there were no significant …

A Philosophical Inquiry Into The Concept Of Territorial Sovereignty: A New Analytical Framework Of The Territorial Disputes In The China Seas, Henan Hu
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
Existing normative legal efforts that focus on territorial acquisition, appear inadequate in providing a uniform and final answer to the issue of territorial disputes in the South and East China Seas. China's historical claims are a unique and difficult issue therein. This article returns legal attention to the central concept of territorial sovereignty within territorial disputes by engaging in a philosophical inquiry to examine if the concept could be more fully understood and to ask to what extent do historical claims relate to the concept of territorial sovereignty and international law. This article argues that a definite answer to these …

Vertical Fault Migration Potential Of Subsurface Contamination Into The Ozark Aquifer: Greene County, Missouri, Bobbi Lynne Koepke, Kelly Frank, Matthew Mckay
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Migration of fluids are commonly handled differently in subfields within the geosciences. In petroleum systems, bedrock evaluation, isopach stratigraphic models, and fault throw estimation are key tools for assessing reservoir quality. Because of the similarities between petroleum systems and groundwater/well-head protection investigations, there is significant opportunity to retask tools and approaches between these two specialties. In southwest Missouri, horizontal to subhorizontal strata are offset by small displacement (throw ranging from 3-55 meters) normal faults. Stratigraphic units also contain karst heterogeneities in carbonate units, which dominate the stratigraphy. The Mississippian Northview Formation contains shale with minor interbedded siltstone that varies between …

The Textual Architecture Of Empire In Two Early Qing Anthologies, Jessica D. Moyer
East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications
During the first half century of the Qing dynasty, Manchu emperors commissioned massive publication projects on the Chinese classics. In early Qing interpretations of classics on the family, negotiations between Manchu and Han family and gender norms furthered the empire-building project. This article compares the spatial form of the Yuding Nei ze yanyi 御定内則衍義 (1656), an expansion of the “Inner Standards” chapter of the Classic of Rites commissioned by the Shunzhi emperor, to that of the Yuding Xiao jing yanyi 御定孝經衍義 (1682), an expansion of the Classic of Filial Piety commissioned by the Kangxi emperor. These works are textual spaces …
