Protecting Life And Lung: Protected Areas Affect Fine Particulate Matter And Respiratory Hospitalizations In The Brazilian Amazon Biome., Derek Michael Sheehan
Protecting Life And Lung: Protected Areas Affect Fine Particulate Matter And Respiratory Hospitalizations In The Brazilian Amazon Biome., Derek Michael Sheehan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
I assessed the impacts of upwind protected area coverage on local respiratory health within the Brazilian Amazon. A hypothesized mechanism is the legal prohibition of human ignited fires within protected areas, reducing particulate matter pollution, impacting respiratory health downwind. The connection between fires and respiratory diseases in the Amazon is well established (Smith et al. 2014; Rangel and Vogl 2019; Rocha and Sant’anna 2020). What is not well understood is the potential that government policies aimed at preventing ecosystem loss may also promote health and wellbeing, combining the UN sustainable development goals 3 and 15. Protected areas currently dominate government …

In-Flux: Economic And Community Adaptations Of Former Timber Mill-Towns In The American West, Cherilyn P. Ashmead
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Once built around natural resource extractive industries, rural communities’ economies are changing as the United States is transitioning away from its industrial past. While much research has focused on rural economic shifts from natural resource production toward amenity-driven economies (Morzillo et al., 2015; Winkler et al, 2007), less research has explored the economic and demographic trends in areas pursuing new modes of production. This two-part study focuses on an understudied region with historic ties to timber in dry mixed-conifer forests, much of which are under federal land management. With few natural amenity draws, the region has largely maintained production-based sectors. …

A Sympathetic But Flawed Look At Book Of Mormon Historicity, Brant A. Gardner
A Sympathetic But Flawed Look At Book Of Mormon Historicity, Brant A. Gardner
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Terrence O’Leary enters the field of books attempting to describe a geographical and cultural background to the Book of Mormon. Placing the action of the text in Mesoamerica, O’Leary explains the Book of Mormon against his understanding of the geography and therefore culture of the Book of Mormon peoples. He begins with the Jaredites, then moves to the Nephites and Mulekites. Along the way, he uses historical data to back up his ideas. While I agree with much of what he has written in principle, his lack of expertise in the cultures of Mesoamerica leads to times when he incorrectly …

Enoch And The Gathering Of Zion, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw
Enoch And The Gathering Of Zion, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw
Interpreter Foundation Books
Latter-day Saints have long been fascinated and inspired by the Book of Moses story of Enoch. It provides the closest thing to a full biography we have in the Book of Moses. And what a biography! Moses 6–7 detail his call, his teaching mission, his glorious vision of all things, his surprising victories in battle, and the ultimate ascent of the city of Zion to the bosom of God. What some readers may not know is that Latter-day Saint scholars, beginning with Hugh Nibley, have begun to find pieces of new and plausibly authentic elements of Enoch’s story in fragments …
Moses 6–7 And The Book Of Giants: Remarkable Witnesses Of Enoch’S Ministry, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw
Moses 6–7 And The Book Of Giants: Remarkable Witnesses Of Enoch’S Ministry, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Book of Giants (BG), an Enoch text found in 1948 among the Dead Sea Scrolls, includes a priceless trove of stories about the ancient prophet and his contemporaries, including unique elements relevant to the Book of Moses Enoch account. Hugh Nibley was the first to discover in the BG a rare personal name that corresponds to the only named character in the Book of Moses besides Enoch himself, a finding that some non-Latterday Saint Enoch scholars considered significant. Since Nibley’s passing, the growth of new scholarship on ancient Enoch texts has continued unabated. While Nibley’s pioneering research compared the …
How Journalists Think About The First Amendment Vis-À-Vis Their Coverage Of Hate Groups, Gregory P. Perreault, Jonathan Peters, Brett Johnson, Leslie Klein
How Journalists Think About The First Amendment Vis-À-Vis Their Coverage Of Hate Groups, Gregory P. Perreault, Jonathan Peters, Brett Johnson, Leslie Klein
School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications
This study, based on in-depth interviews with U.S.-based journalists (n = 18), explores the increasingly fraught circumstances of reporting on hate groups. We examine how journalists think about the First Amendment vis-à-vis their coverage of such groups. Through the lens of media ecology and First Amendment principles and theories, we argue ultimately that journalists who cover hate groups use the First Amendment to identify their place in the journalistic environment.

Perspectives On Malay Language Use And Autonym Preference Among Urban Malays In South Thailand, Christopher M. Joll, Srawut Aree
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This article offers theoretical and ethnographic perspectives on language ideology and autonym preference among bi-lingual urban Malays in Pattani’s provincial capital. The first of its two substantive sections presents a concise summary of the most relevant insights provided by linguistic anthropologists and sociolinguists who have written on language ideology and the role of language in identity formation. The primary purpose of the second section is to explore the heuristic utility of these theoretical insights on a range of ethnographic vignettes where a range of language-related issues have historically represented a significant source of mistrust between the local Malay majority and …
Redistricting: Pathways To Fairness And Comity, Jeffrey M. Wice
Redistricting: Pathways To Fairness And Comity, Jeffrey M. Wice
Redistricting Resources
Increasingly, the process of redrawing congressional and state legislative boundaries to achieve the “one person, one vote” goal has been marked by partisan maneuvering, lack of civility, and litigious strategies. This paper provides an overview of redistricting procedures, discusses lessons learned from the post-2010 decennial census round of redistricting, and offers recommendations for improving cooperation between the political parties during the post-2020 Census redistricting cycle. It offers pathways for promoting fair and equitable political representation.

‘Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast’: Use And Abuse Of Culture In International Strategy Research, Stephen Tallman, Jay Valerian Wu
‘Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast’: Use And Abuse Of Culture In International Strategy Research, Stephen Tallman, Jay Valerian Wu
Management Faculty Publications
International strategy, as a subfield of strategic management, has too often settled for simplistic and rote approaches to bringing the international setting into the analysis of cross-border strategies and their consequences. We examine the application of national culture in international strategy research as perhaps the most common expression of locational awareness. We begin by considering the many critical assessments of current theoretical and empirical research on the culture-strategy interaction. We summarize multiple meta-analytic studies and examine a sample of empirical articles from the past 40 years more closely to offer our own criticism of the theories, settings, data, models, and …
Gold Mining Districts And Path Dependence, Jason T. Dunn
Gold Mining Districts And Path Dependence, Jason T. Dunn
Honors Theses
This paper applies quantitative spatial analysis to the long-term impact of Western gold rushes, studying the effect of 19th century US mineral districts on modern (2010) population density, as a proxy for long-term economic growth. OLS regression estimates show positive effects for areas adjacent to historic mining districts. Census tracts within 15 miles of a mineral district but not containing one are 29.8% more dense than other tracts. Additionally, capital-intensive/large-scale mining was more persistent than labor-intensive/small-scale methods, and path dependence is achieved mainly through agglomeration. This research corroborates historical arguments focusing on the development of Western infrastructure for long term …

Law And Anti-Blackness, Michele Goodwin
Law And Anti-Blackness, Michele Goodwin
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
This Article addresses a thin slice of the American stain. Its value derives from the conversation it attempts to foster related to reckoning, reconciliation, and redemption. As the 1930s Federal Writers’ Project attempted to illuminate and make sense of slavery through its Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives From 1936-1938, so too this project seeks to uncover and name law’s role in fomenting racial division and caste. Part I turns to pathos and hate, creating race and otherness through legislating reproduction— literal and figurative. Part II turns to the Thirteenth Amendment. It argues that the preservation of slavery endured through …

Actions Speak Louder Than Words: When Should Courts Find That Institutions Have A Duty To Protect Minor Children From Sexual Abuse?, Emily C. Hoskins
Chapman Law Review
This Comment focuses on the legal duty of institutions as it pertains to the sexual molestation and assault of children involved in youth programs by third parties working for the institution. This Comment analyzes the law of negligence, specifically the duty arising from a special relationship and other policy considerations, and uses it to simplify and enunciate a test which should be used to determine when a duty exists.

Microbiome Community And Parasitic Infections In Wild Bees, Mark G. Young
Microbiome Community And Parasitic Infections In Wild Bees, Mark G. Young
Honors Theses
The microbiome is increasingly recognized for its complex relationship with host fitness. Akin to primates and other social animals, bumblebees harbor a specific microbiome derived from social contact. The bumblebee microbiome is characteristically species poor, with just a few “core” phylotypes accounting for the majority of total abundance. Genomic analyses reveal phylogenetic congruence and adaptation of the core endosymbionts to the bumblebee gut, indicating a shared evolutionary history. Prior investigations reveal that the relative abundance of core microbes is negatively associated with infection by a trypanosome, Crithidia bombi, and that the microbiome has a mechanistic role in immunity. As …

"Nice, Quiet Hand": The Creation And Navigation Of Feeling Rules In A Second Grade Classroom, Avery Munns
Honors Theses
Emotions are largely viewed as individual and internal, but in reality, emotions are socially situated. This project aims to use a sociology of emotions framework in order to explore how emotional expectations are created, maintained, and navigated within a classroom environment. Through a series of observations over the course of a month, I set out to answer questions surrounding which emotions were encouraged, which emotions were discouraged, and how both teachers and students created and navigated these feeling rules. Overall, I found that emotions were largely discouraged, especially through the overarching feeling rules of “be quiet” and “control your body.” …
Contrasting Patterns Of Nutrient Limitation In The Littoral And Pelagic Zones Of Mesotrophic Maine Lakes, Grace C. Neumiller
Contrasting Patterns Of Nutrient Limitation In The Littoral And Pelagic Zones Of Mesotrophic Maine Lakes, Grace C. Neumiller
Honors Theses
Intense nutrient loading of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) causes sudden regime shifts in freshwater ecosystems from clearwater to turbid conditions with frequent cyanobacterial blooms. Characterization of nutrient limitation patterns of primary productivity in these ecosystems is necessary for effective management of algal blooms. However, much of this research has focused on pelagic habitats. The influence of lake habitat (i.e. benthic littoral versus pelagic zones) on nutrient limitation of primary production in mesotrophic lakes is largely unknown, particularly in contrast to research on pelagic nutrient limitation in eutrophic systems. Using paired nutrient diffusing substrata and mesocosm experiments, we measured chlorophyll- …

Tomato leaf miner is an aggressive and invasive pest that causes serious damage in tomato production, resulting in up to 100% yield losses during serious outbreaks. The management of tomato leaf miner with synthetic pesticides is difficult due to its leaf mining habit, short life span, high reproductive rates, and insecticide resistance problem. In this study, sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI) gene of Tuta absoluta specimens were analyzed and compared with the available COI sequence data members from GenBank. All the specimens of tomato leaf miner were clustered together in a single group with a high support …

Spatial Distribution Of Bangkok City Government’S Expenditures On Infrastructure Investment, Sitanun Anandarangsri
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The investments in infrastructure and services help spur Bangkok’s economy to faster growth. All the public facilities and services stimulate Bangkok’s economy to strong competitiveness among the Southeast Asia regions which helps increase employment opportunities. Generally, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) gets the largest portion of the national government's financial support among other local governments, as the city is the primary engine of national economic growth and the center of the country’s economic activities. Although the city is facing a net registered population decline situation, in these past years, it is obvious that Bangkok Metropolitan Administration keeps its interest in …

Leading In Crooked Rooms: Race, Gender, Culture And Black Women's Leadership Skills And Practices, Portia Newman
Theses and Dissertations
The literature on Black women leaders, where it exists, focuses on the barriers to Black women becoming leaders or being fully empowered when in leadership positions. However, to understand the leadership identity of Black women, and perhaps help to explain the absence of Black women in formal leadership spaces, means to examine the influence of race, gender, and culture on leadership behavior, as well as the setting in which leadership exists. This qualitative grounded theory study explored the leadership skills and practices of 15 senior-level cross sector Black women leaders. The data was collected in two phases: 1) a leadership …

A Multilevel Mixed Methods Examination Of Treatment Nonadherence Among Rural Cancer Survivors, Bonny Morris
Theses and Dissertations
While mortality rates have been decreasing over the last 40 years, cancer remains a leading cause of death in the United States. Over 1.7 million people were diagnosed with cancer in 2019, and there were more than 600,000 cancer deaths. Of the 15 million cancer survivors in the US, nearly 3 million reside in rural areas and experience 3% higher cancer incidence and 10% higher cancer mortality compared to their nonrural counterparts. During 2006-2015, the annual age-adjusted mortality rates for all cancer sites combined decreased at a slower pace in rural areas versus nonrural areas (-1.0% vs -1.6% per year, …
