Charting A Path Forward To Create Justice For All, Danielle Elyce Hirsch, Lillian Wood Jan 2021

Charting A Path Forward To Create Justice For All, Danielle Elyce Hirsch, Lillian Wood

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

It has been an unprecedented year, and the challenges we face are not yet over. Chief among them are the dual crises of coronavirus and racism, challenges which are distinct, yet undeniably intertwined. Existing research indicates that members of poor and minority groups are less likely than their white and higher-income counterparts to seek help when they experience a civil legal problem. Indeed, roughly three-quarters of the members of poor and minority groups do not seek legal help when they experience such problems.2 Frequently, people’s legal problems are connected to other issues in their lives, including domestic violence, substance …

The Effects Of A Changing Neighborhood Ethnicity On Voting, Richard Ray Galusha Jan 2021

The Effects Of A Changing Neighborhood Ethnicity On Voting, Richard Ray Galusha

Dissertations and Theses

During most of the 20th century, immigration to the United States had slowed considerably. When the United States changed to the immigration policy of family reunification in 1965, the source of immigrants shifted from Europe to South America, Central America, and Asia. With this change, the nation became increasingly racially and ethnically diverse. With increased pluralism, the number of intergroup contacts increased. In a society whose history of race relations has been complicated and often unpleasant, this paper begins an on-going examination as to how the majority group, Whites, responded politically to increased pluralism. Racial threat theory explains how Whites …

From The Dark Margins To The Spotlight: The Evolution Of Gastronomy And Food Studies In Ireland, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire Jan 2021

From The Dark Margins To The Spotlight: The Evolution Of Gastronomy And Food Studies In Ireland, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Books/Book Chapters

For many years, food was seen as too quotidian and belonging to the domestic sphere, and therefore to women, which excluded it from any serious study or consideration in academia. This chapter tracks the evolution of gastronomy and food studies in Ireland. It charts the development of gastronomy as a cultural field, originally in France, to its emergence as an academic discipline with a particular Irish inflection. It details the progress that food history and culinary education have made in Ireland, suggesting that a new liberal / vocational model of culinary education, which commenced in 1999, has helped transform the …

Applying A Food Studies Perspective To Irish Studies, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire Jan 2021

Applying A Food Studies Perspective To Irish Studies, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Books/Book Chapters

Food studies and Irish Studies stem from the same ‘studies’ phenomena and share many similarities in their journeys from the margins to becoming established academic disciplines. A common feature of the new academic studies movement, whether French, gender, postcolonial, cinematic, African, Irish or food is their interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary nature. They become more than any one discipline and scholars within these new fields continuously investigate from various angles, often adopting ‘self-reflexivity’ as an approach. Stereotypical postcolonial notions of the drunken or ‘stage Irishman’, or food’s association with the quotidian domestic, and therefore, feminine, led some academics up until relatively recently …

Exploring The Role Of Peer Observation Of Teaching In Facilitating Cross-Institutional Professional Conversations About Teaching And Learning, Muireann Okeeffe, Martina Crehan, Morag Munro, Anna Logan, Ann Marie Farrell, Eric Clarke, Michelle Flood

Articles

This paper explores how cross-institutional Peer Observation of Teaching (PoT) provided a structured opportunity for professional conversations by which observers and observees shared and developed their perspectives on teaching experience and skills. Such professional conversations offer opportunities for both parties to gain a perspective on practices that may have been taken for granted. Participants from three Higher Education institutions engaged in cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional PoT, followed by facilitated reflective conversations. This paper captures the factors for success that enabled continuing conversations on teaching and learning and highlights the value of supporting such conversations outside formal, uni-institutional peer observation programmes.

The Geography Of Abortion Rights, B. Jessie Hill Jan 2021

The Geography Of Abortion Rights, B. Jessie Hill

Faculty Publications

Total or near-total abortion bans passed in recent years have garnered tremendous public attention. But another recent wave of more modest-looking abortion restrictions consists of laws regulating the geography of abortion provision through management of spaces, places, and borders. In the 1990s and early 2000s, numerous states adopted laws regulating the physical spaces where abortions can be performed. These laws include mandates that abortions be performed in particular kinds of places, such as ambulatory surgical centers, or that abortion-providing facilities have agreements in place with local hospitals. One consequence of such regulations has been to reduce the availability of abortion …

Ed.D. Dissertations

Alternative routes to teacher certification have been utilized as a way to address the Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education teacher shortage, and this abbreviated path to a teaching career has attracted current educators from the industries for which they are trained. Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education teachers who have entered the teaching profession after prior industry experience intentionally chose, and continue to choose, to teach. There is a gap in the extant literature as to why. In this qualitative interpretive study, I examined the motivational influences on professional choice, perceived level of preparedness, and retention of alternatively certified teachers …

Whiteness And Multiculutral Competence: Counseling Psychology Faculty As Gatekeepers To Understanding Whiteness, Blanka Angyal

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

The study presents a conceptual model for researching multicultural competence informed by critical race (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001), feminist standpoint (Smith, 1987, 1997), and intersectional (Collins, 1986; Chrenshaw, 1989) paradigms. An Assessment Of Kentucky Birth Records, Focusing On Early-Onset Hypertensive Disorders Of Pregnancy, Environmental Metal Exposures, And Geocoding Precision, 2008-2017, Courtney J. Walker

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Using live and stillbirth records from Kentucky (2008-2017), this dissertation assessed the county-level prevalence and geospatial patterns of early-onset hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (eHDP); examined the geocoding precision of addresses recorded on birth records, and evaluated the association between individual risk factors and environmental metal exposures on eHDP prevalence. After adjusting for maternal demographic factors and pre-existing health conditions, we observed that eHDP prevalence was 38% higher (aPR=1.38, 95%CI:1.16, 1.64) in counties with the highest prevalence of married women (> 53.8%) compared to lower prevalence areas (31.6%) had a 20% higher prevalence of eHDP(aPR=1.20, 95%CI:1.00, 1.44) compared to counties with …

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Wyoming’s unique cultural and physical landscape fostered dynamic federalism relationships that have oscillated between adversarial and cooperative. Too often, though, the State and its federal and tribal counterparts have found themselves in the role of unbecoming adversaries. As current and former natural resources faculty members at the University of Wyoming (UW) College of Law, we are privileged to offer a retrospective on this subject upon the law school’s centennial. In 2021, the State is facing new and daunting challenges that are straining its core industries and budget, including economic changes associated with the COVID-19 global pandemic and rapidly transforming energy …

The Spanish Inquisitorial Process In Latin America And Racial Profiling Today: A Comparative Legal Study, Samantha M. Miller Jan 2021

The Spanish Inquisitorial Process In Latin America And Racial Profiling Today: A Comparative Legal Study, Samantha M. Miller

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis analyzes the profiling practices of the Spanish Inquisition and explores how comparing these to present manifestations provides us a lens for understanding the phenomenon of racial profiling today. Irene Silverblatt notes that with reference to the Spanish Inquisition in colonial Peru, certain practices of the Inquisition constituted what could be called "racial profiling" in today's terminology. This thesis revisits Silverblatt's seminal observation and extends it to current questions of racial profiling, its nature, parameters, and the most notable differences and similarities between profiling during the Inquisition and racial profiling today, even as the enforcement in question shifts from …

Analysis Of City Of St. Petersburg Comprehensive Plan With Special Reference To Coastal Management Considering Climate Change, Michael F. Johnson

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Land Development and the policy that drives it has long been an important issue in the Tampa Bay Area and by extension the state of Florida. Flooding and hurricanes have had to be considered in the future development of most places in Florida. But as climate change begins to pose a serious, leading to rising sea levels, increasingly powerful hurricanes, coastal erosion, increasing drought, and periods of unusually heavy rain, the role of policy, specifically the state- mandated comprehensive plan, in either mitigating or enhancing the susceptibility of any given area to these threats must be evaluated. This paper reviews …

Three Essays On Price Analysis And International Trade, Wei Zhang Jan 2021

Three Essays On Price Analysis And International Trade, Wei Zhang

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

The first chapter of this dissertation examines price discovery and volatility spillovers in the coffee spot-futures commodity market over the post-ICA period by employing the PT-IS and bivariate EGARCH models. This research covers two actively traded coffee types, Arabica and Robusta, and utilizes daily time-series price data over 1990:01-2020:04 for Arabica and over 2008:01-2020:04 for Robusta. The empirical results indicate that coffee spot markets play a dominant role in the coffee price discovery for both Arabica and Robusta. The results also show volatility spillovers take place from the coffee spot market to the futures markets. This study helps small-scale coffee …
