Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
The occurrence of two members of the genus Hypsugo, namely H. alaschanicus and H. savii caucasicus, have been reported for Mongolia in the literature. Due to various taxonomic reassignments within and between genera, the number of records for the genus Hypsugo in Mongolia is quite scarce and sometimes not resolved at species or subspecies level. Despite recognition of the two above-mentioned species, recent reports based on genetic analyses describe only new and further records of H. alaschanicus. Thus, it exists a large uncertainty regarding the occurrence and distribution of H. savii caucasicus in Mongolia. Here, our efforts …

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
The cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo (Linnaeus, 1758) is a common breeding species at lake areas of Mongolia. Although molecular research has been conducted on many colonies worldwide, no studies of the genetic diversity of Mongolian colonies are known to date. In this study, we sequence for the first time a fragment of cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) from ten individuals of the 2017 resident population at Telmen-nuur. Here we perform molecular identification and analyze it in the context of existing data from populations studied worldwide. A clear assignment to the species P. carbo could be shown, but no identification on subspecies level …

Die Grundlage für die Häufigkeitseinschätzung bilden …
Inequality, Migrations, And Black Swans: The Case Of Italy, Giacomo Di Pasquale
Inequality, Migrations, And Black Swans: The Case Of Italy, Giacomo Di Pasquale
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on an empirical analysis on how inequality, internal and international mobility, and exogenous shocks interact with each other. With a focus on Italy, I provide an important contribution to existing literature on migration and inequality, through a comparative analysis at the subnational level. This characteristic of my work provides a unique opportunity to better understand inequality within countries. Using rigorous econometric and spatial techniques, as well as qualitative material, gathered from case studies and reports from international organizations, my dissertation contributes to the literature in social sciences on the causes and effects of inequality and on how …

The Palaearctic is a zoogeographical region where knowledge of the distribution, taxonomy and ecology of bats (Chiroptera) is generally quite extensive. However, for many Palaearctic subregions, including Mongolia, detailed knowledge is still quite scarce. Also for some groups of species there are only few studies available to date. This holds also true for the long-eared bats of the genus Plecotus. For the long-eared bats, which live in close family groups and do not migrate over long distances, the development of different life form types can be expected. Studies tackling this are so far lacking.
The fundamental revision of the …

Axes Mundi: Ritual Complexes In Mesoamerica And The Book Of Mormon, Mark Alan Wright
Axes Mundi: Ritual Complexes In Mesoamerica And The Book Of Mormon, Mark Alan Wright
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
An axis mundi refers to a sacred place that connects heaven and earth and is believed to be the center of the world. These places are sanctified through ritual consecration or through a divine manifestation that results in qualitatively detaching that space from the surrounding cosmos. Often expressed in architecture as a universal pillar, these axes mundi incorporate and put in communication three cosmic levels — earth, heaven, and the underworld. As Mark Alan Wright notes, Mesoamerican sacred architecture was designed according to cosmological principles and finds a modern analogy in Latter-day Saint temples. Also, among Mesoamerican civilizations and in …
Mormon, Moses, And The Representation Of Reality, Richard L. Bushman
Mormon, Moses, And The Representation Of Reality, Richard L. Bushman
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In this essay, Richard Bushman borrows a critical perspective from Erich Auerbach’s Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature. He analyzes the representation of antiquity in two of Joseph Smith’s striking translations, the Book of Mormon and the Book of Moses. The two texts, produced within a few years of one another, created distinctive stages on which to dramatize the human-God relationship. The question is: What can we learn from this comparison about God, prophets, and human destiny?
Joseph Smith As A Book Of Mormon Storyteller, Brian C. Hales
Joseph Smith As A Book Of Mormon Storyteller, Brian C. Hales
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
For nearly 200 years, skeptics have promoted different naturalistic explanations to describe how Joseph Smith generated all the words of the Book of Mormon. The more popular theories include plagiarism (e.g. of the Solomon Spaulding manuscript), collaboration (with Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Rigdon, etc.), mental illness (bipolar, dissociative, or narcissistic personality disorders) and automatic writing, also called “spirit writing, “trance writing,” or “channeling.” A fifth and currently the most popular theory posits that Joseph Smith possessed all the intellectual abilities needed to complete the task. A variation on this last explanation proposes that he used the methods of professional storytellers. For …

Report to Stakeholders
Last year, the profound impact of the Covid-19 pandemic reaffirmed that the three strategic priorities we had identified for SMU and the wider community – digital transformation, sustainable living and growth in Asia – are the right priorities. As the world learns to manage Covid-19, focus must be given to sustainable living. Here SMU can contribute to driving solutions to manage climate change and sustainable city living.
Systemic Racism And Immigration Detention, Carrie L. Rosenbaum
Systemic Racism And Immigration Detention, Carrie L. Rosenbaum
Seattle University Law Review
The denouement of the Trump presidency was a white supremacist coup attempt against a backdrop of public reawakening to the persistence of institutionalized racism. Though the United States has entered a new administration with a leader that expresses his commitment to ending institutionalized racism, the United States continues to imprison Central American and Mexican immigrants at the southern border. If the majority of the people in immigration jails at the border are Latinx, does immigration law disparately impact them, and do they have a right to equal protection? If they do, would equal protection protect them? This Article explores whether …
Insights Into Past Land-Use And Vegetation Change In The Llanos De Moxos (Bolivia) Using Fungal Non-Pollen Palynomorphs, Jennifer M.K. O'Keefe
Insights Into Past Land-Use And Vegetation Change In The Llanos De Moxos (Bolivia) Using Fungal Non-Pollen Palynomorphs, Jennifer M.K. O'Keefe
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Here we document a 1000-year fungal record from the raised-field region of the Llanos de Moxos, a seasonally inundated forest-savanna mosaic in the Bolivian Amazon. Fungi are extremely sensitive to changes in vegetation due to their close relationship with the local environment, providing a useful proxy for past local vegetation and land-use change. Here the remains of fungal non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) are identified from a sediment core taken from Laguna El Cerrito. A multivariate constrained ordination is used to extract relationships between the fungal NPP types and environmental gradients, specifically, tree cover, near-shore vegetation, crop cultivation, burning and local sediment …
Evolutionary Clustering And Community Detection Algorithms For Social Media Health Surveillance, Heba Elgazzar
Evolutionary Clustering And Community Detection Algorithms For Social Media Health Surveillance, Heba Elgazzar
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
The prominent rise of social networks within the past decade have become a gold mine for data mining operations seeking to model the real world through these virtual worlds. One of the most important applications that has been proposed is utilizing information generated from social networks as a supplemental health surveillance system to monitor disease epidemics. At the time this research was conducted in 2020, the COVID- 19 virus had evolved into a global pandemic, forcing many countries to implement preventative measures to halt its expanse. Health surveillance has been a powerful tool in placing further preventative measures, however it …
From Elite Enclaves To Common Compounds: Gated Communities In Miami, Florida, Anna Lynn Winfrey
From Elite Enclaves To Common Compounds: Gated Communities In Miami, Florida, Anna Lynn Winfrey
Theses & ETDs
Although gated communities are prevalent throughout Miami-Dade County, few scholarly research exists that explains how and why they became so popular. In this thesis, I chronicle the development of gated communities in Miami from elite enclaves to common compounds, with an analysis of newspaper archives, GIS data and interviews. The first case study focuses on Doral, Florida, a suburb on the fringe of Miami-Dade, initially built out with sprawling gated estates. Because of spatial constraints today, developers have shifted to constructing high-density residences in a newly created downtown area. The second case study focuses on Liberty Square, a public housing …
Your Turn To Role: Queer Worldbuilding In Dungeons And Dragons, Grant H.C. Brewer
Your Turn To Role: Queer Worldbuilding In Dungeons And Dragons, Grant H.C. Brewer
Theses & ETDs
As it now stands, Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most widely-known tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs). The game has flourished especially over the past seven years with the publication of the fifth edition, particularly among those who are LGBTQ+. In this thesis, I investigate Dungeons and Dragons’ possibility for transformation because of the ability of the Dungeon Master (DM) and the players to rewrite the story and reimagine our world, referred to as “queer worldbuilding”. I ask “How does Dungeons and Dragons support queer worldbuilding?” Drawing on theories of queer performance, I define queer worldbuilding as the processes and …
Distance, Movement, And Turnout: The Relationship Between Precinct Polling Locations And Turning Out To Vote, Annika Kufrovich
Distance, Movement, And Turnout: The Relationship Between Precinct Polling Locations And Turning Out To Vote, Annika Kufrovich
Theses & ETDs
Of the numerous costs to turning out in an election, distance to polling location has been gaining traction as a notable cost to voting with a consistent negative effect on turnout the further a voter lives from their polling place. However, one of the major shortcomings of existing research in this area has been the limited scope of these studies - due to data challenges, most have been significantly limited in their geographic breadth, conducting analysis at the county level or lower. Taking advantage of the 12 million citizen Florida voter file, this study uses a far larger amount of …
Exploring Identity And Culture Through The Overlaps Of Anthropology And Literature In The Works Of Amitav Ghosh And José María Arguedas, Annabelle Wilson
Exploring Identity And Culture Through The Overlaps Of Anthropology And Literature In The Works Of Amitav Ghosh And José María Arguedas, Annabelle Wilson
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I explore the overlaps of literature and anthropology in the works of two novelist-anthropologists, José María Arguedas and Amitav Ghosh. Arguedas is a Peruvian ethnologist, folklorist, and writer while Ghosh is an Indian sociologist, historian, anthropologist, and writer. Their novels, Deep Rivers (1958) and The Calcutta Chromosome (1995), respectively, focus on matters concerned with cultural transformations, the representation of the subaltern or the Other, and marginalized communities and histories. Because of the authors’ backgrounds as both novelists and anthropologists and the anthropological concerns present in their literary work, I became interested in studying how the two fields …

Original Sin? Genealogical Considerations Against National And Patriotic Partiality, Carter Delegal
Original Sin? Genealogical Considerations Against National And Patriotic Partiality, Carter Delegal
Theses & ETDs
This thesis investigates whether and how the shameful and contingent origins of social practices can provide a normative reason against those practices. Chapter one surgery’s some challenges to normative arguments from origins, or normative genealogies, but argues that such arguments can be successful if construed correctly. Chapter two then introduces the practices that will serve as the case studies of this thesis: national and patriotic partiality. One justification for such practices references the relationships involved in nationalism and patriotism and the distinctively important role such relationships play in people’s lives. Finally, chapter three shows why a genealogical approach might yield …
Reigning Cats And Dogs: Women, Pets, And Agency In Colette, Woolf, And Zola, Tyler Grubb
Reigning Cats And Dogs: Women, Pets, And Agency In Colette, Woolf, And Zola, Tyler Grubb
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines what female characters’ relationships with their pets reveal about their romantic relationships with men in late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century fictions by Colette, Virginia Woolf, and Émile Zola. These interspecies connections reveal the amount of agency that the female protagonists have both in their romantic relationships and in society at large. Analyzing interactions between human characters and their animal companions is a unique way to explore topics such as a woman’s level of independence or the viability of a romantic relationship. In Colette’s The Vagabond and Woolf’s Flush, pet dogs serve as proxies for the female protagonists; the differences …
Between Worlds: A Dissection Of The Manic Pixie Dream Girl Trope Through The Lens Of The Late-19th And Early-20th Century New Woman, Claire Newberg
Between Worlds: A Dissection Of The Manic Pixie Dream Girl Trope Through The Lens Of The Late-19th And Early-20th Century New Woman, Claire Newberg
Theses & ETDs
The Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope in recent cinematic history as well as Young Adult novels of the past couple decades features a young bubbly, girl who steps in to save her depressed, lost-in-the-world male counterpart and shows him the excitement of life. This trope often borrows traits from the late-19th and early-20th century New Woman in literature, which culminates in a pseudo-profound classic-like literature that is easier to metabolize than actual classic literature. John Green is among the more known Manic Pixie Dream Girl writers and is known for his novels Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns. Common critiques …
La Conservation Coloniale Au Service De L’Exploitation : Changing Conceptions Of Land And Environmental Policy In French Algeria And Indochina, Joseph Daniels
La Conservation Coloniale Au Service De L’Exploitation : Changing Conceptions Of Land And Environmental Policy In French Algeria And Indochina, Joseph Daniels
Theses & ETDs
At its core, this thesis is an environmental history on Algeria and Indochina as French colonies. The period of study starts with pre-colonial, Old Regime Enlightenment texts on Algeria that were published in 1838, after colonization began, and follows a progression of colonization until the beginning of the twentieth century until just before the Great War. The main goal of the thesis is to analyze how and why certain environmental and land use policies were implemented in the colonies, and how these laws eventually supported the expropriation of land from the native populations to colonists. In the thesis, the pre-colonial …
Chinese Jade: Making The Past Serve The Present, Karl Hahn
Chinese Jade: Making The Past Serve The Present, Karl Hahn
Theses & ETDs
Jade is a semi-precious mineral that has played a significant role in Chinese societies since antiquity. As a material culture, jade has a life beyond the context that it was created in and is capable of evoking images of the past. This paper explores jade culture’s significance to Chinese culture at different points in time and its use in state and political legitimization. Jade culture has been recycled throughout Chinese history to reflect societal shifts and to meet the particular needs of a given society. This paper starts by looking at jade culture during Chinese antiquity, and then during the …
Fashioning The New Woman: Elsa Schiaparelli And The Illusion And Agency Of Feminine Performance, Megan O'Brian
Fashioning The New Woman: Elsa Schiaparelli And The Illusion And Agency Of Feminine Performance, Megan O'Brian
Theses & ETDs
Elsa Schiaparelli was an Italian fashion designer based in Paris during the interwar period of the early twentieth century. This thesis will examine her career from a feminist perspective and contextualize her unusual womenswear designs within the Surrealist movement and 1930s Paris, when “New Women” experienced increased freedom and agency, but also, as a consequence, backlash from society. As an active and independent business owner experiencing international success for her unique and “shocking” pieces, Schiaparelli herself was an exemplary New Woman. However, her triumphs did not come without a number of difficulties, and these obstacles and Schiaparelli’s complicated self-image inspired …
The Covid-19 Pandemic, Brownfields, And Racism: Environmental Perspectives On Crisis Multipliers, Charlie Leavengood
The Covid-19 Pandemic, Brownfields, And Racism: Environmental Perspectives On Crisis Multipliers, Charlie Leavengood
Theses & ETDs
COVID-19 is a global pandemic highlighting historic, systemic inequities. The inequities are demonstrated through raw data of disease risk and severe outcomes of hospitalization or death. This thesis focuses on insights from the Multicultural Health Institute (MHI) during the Summer and Fall of 2020. MHI developed information about the infectious disease COVID-19 and through weekly strategic intervention community meetings. The work emphasized mitigating public health disparities through analysis of social determinants of health. The thesis focuses on Marian Anderson Place, a brownfield in Sarasota, Florida, because of its proximity to the historic Newtown district, the area of Sarasota with the …
