Servant Leadership As Organizational Mindfulness, Cia Kozak
Servant Leadership As Organizational Mindfulness, Cia Kozak
Mindfulness Studies Theses
Abstract
Servant leadership exemplifies mindfulness precepts in a systems environment. Robert K. Greenleaf’s (1970/2008) servant leadership movement launched with his seminal essay, The Servant as Leader, in which he revealed an affinity with the philosophy of mindfulness. There is a commonality of language and behaviors that servant leadership shares with mindfulness principles. In addition, servant leadership’s aspiration for holistic member wellbeing reflects mindfulness teachings. The servant leadership hierarchical model upends traditional organization constructs, demonstrating a mindfulness view of community whereby the leader serves all rather than all serving the leader. This echoes Buddhist monastic communities in which power is …

Artistic Expressions Of Vegan Women With Disturbed Eating Behavior And Body Image Distress, Lee Ann Thill
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This research explores the experience of women who are vegan, and have disturbed eating behaviors (DEB) and body image distress (BID). Four participants completed a series of three art-making sessions. Participants were invited to visually explore their experience as a vegan woman with DEB/BID. They made a mixed media collage with an emphasis on layering in each session. They engaged in discussion about their process, and the final art piece’s meaning. Between sessions, researcher response art pieces were created for each participant piece, with accompanying journal reflections to engage with the ideas they explored. All participant sessions were video and …

Neighborhoods And Intimate Partner Violence: A Decade In Review, Emily M. Wright, Gillian M. Pinchevsky, Min Xie
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
We consider the broad developments that have occurred over the past decade regarding our knowledge of how neighborhood context impacts intimate partner violence (IPV). Research has broadened the concept of “context” beyond structural features such as economic disadvantage, and extended into relationships among residents, collective “action” behaviors among residents, cultural and gender norms. Additionally, scholars have considered how the built environment might foster (or regulate) IPV. We now know more about the direct, indirect, and moderating ways that communities impact IPV. We encourage additional focus on the policy implications of the research findings.

Discursive choices made by policy entrepreneurs are an important factor in the development of climate change acts (CCAs). This article examines the extent to which such choices reflect the strategic need for CCA entrepreneurs to compromise pragmatically and modulate their policy preferences in order to secure the agreement needed for CCA adoption. Drawing upon theoretical insights from discursive institutionalism (DI) and policy entrepreneurship, this article analyses discursive choices during negotiations surrounding the New Zealand Zero Carbon Act (ZCA). The analysis shows that endogenous political-ideological constraints compelled entrepreneurial actors to modify first-choice preferences for emissions reduction legislation by reframing their coordinative …
Optical And Physicochemical Properties Of Atmospherically Processed Brown Carbon Using Novel First-Principle Instrumentation, Benjamin Sumlin
Optical And Physicochemical Properties Of Atmospherically Processed Brown Carbon Using Novel First-Principle Instrumentation, Benjamin Sumlin
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Atmospheric processing of brown carbon (BrC) – a class of spherical, internally-mixed, light-absorbing organic aerosol – emitted from smoldering biomass combustion is an understudied phenomenon with implications for climate science, air quality models, and satellite retrieval algorithms. BrC aerosols have received significant attention as a strong contributor to atmospheric light absorption in the shorter visible wavelengths and a driver of UV photochemistry. Their complex refractive indices (m=n+ik), size distributions, and carbon oxidation states dictate their optical properties, atmospheric residence times, and chemical interactions, respectively. There is currently a gap in our understanding of these fundamental particle properties and their evolution …

We investigated diets of 24 Barents Sea zooplankton taxa to understand pelagic food-web processes during late summer, including the importance of sea ice algae-produced carbon. This was achieved by combining insights derived from multiple and complementary trophic marker approaches to construct individual aspects of feeding. Specifically, we determined proportions of algal-produced fatty acids (FAs) to reflect the reliance on diatom- versus dinoflagellate-derived carbon, highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) lipids that distinguish between ice-associated and pelagic carbon sources, and sterols to indicate the degree of carnivory. Copepods had the strongest diatom signal based on FAs, while a lack of sea ice algae-associated …
Rethinking The Doctrine Of Aboriginal Rights: The Métis Cases, Paul Chartrand
Rethinking The Doctrine Of Aboriginal Rights: The Métis Cases, Paul Chartrand
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The 2003 Powley judicial discovery and recognition of a new “Métis” community far from the Métis Nation homeland usurped the historic prerogative of the executive to recognize a new Aboriginal people and is not warranted by section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 which contemplates political negotiations. The invention of a distinct test for proof of Métis rights was unnecessary and created doctrinal uncertainty and unfairness. This article reflects on changes to Aboriginal rights doctrine that would limit the judicial role to the determination of the local rights of local communities, while recognizing that the determination of national interests and …

The “Majestic Equality” Of The Law: Conservatism, Radicalism, And Reform Of The Civil Courts In Upper Canada, 1841-1853, William N. T. Wylie
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The mid-nineteenth century was an age of reform in the civil courts of the common-law world. Why, in spite of the clamour for change within Upper Canada and the introduction of reforms in adjacent common-law jurisdictions, were Upper Canada’s leading lawyers and politicians so reluctant to act? The answer is found in the conservatism of the province’s leaders, which stemmed not only from the legal training of the lawyers, but also from the moderate conservative ideology of the Upper Canadian leadership as a whole. At an almost unprecedented time of public debate, when resentment to lawyers and the courts was …

Understanding The Ongoing Dialogues On Indigenous Issues In Canadian Legal Education Through The Lens Of Institutional Cultures (Case Studies At Uqam, Ualberta, And Umoncton), Adrien Habermacher
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article offers an empirical study of the discourses and attitudes at three law faculties regarding Indigenous issues in legal education. After the catalyst effect of the TRC report, law faculties across Canada are facing the great challenge of fulfilling their role in the process of reconciliation. This article highlights how the modalities of the dialogue in each faculty correspond to each institution’s culture, approached through their history, social space, and sense of mission. Through interviews with faculty members and observations at public events at UQAM, UAlberta, and UMoncton, this article reveals the stark contrasts between the three case studies …
Internalizing International Trade Law: A Critical Analysis Of The Canadian Free Trade Agreement’S National Treatment Jurisprudence, Ryan Manucha
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The Canadian Free Trade Agreement 2017 (CFTA), which replaced the Agreement on Internal Trade 1995 (AIT), provides a forum to resolve internal trade disputes against provinces, territories, and the federal government. Under its predecessor, the AIT, thirteen dispute panels and two appeal panels convened to adjudicate such claims; to date, no cases have yet been brought under the CFTA. Despite its lengthy lifespan and repeated use, little literature exists that critically examines the substantive findings and analytical methods found in the AIT’s jurisprudence (case law now inherited by the CFTA). Academic dialogue on the legal reasoning found within the body …

A New Vine Snake (Reptilia, Colubridae, Oxybelis) From Peru And Redescription Of O. Acuminatus, Robert C. Jadin, Michael J. Jowers, Sarah A. Orlofske, William E. Duellman, Christopher Blair, John C. Murphy
Publications and Research
The Brown Vine Snake, Oxybelis aeneus, was until recently considered a single species, distributed from southern Arizona through the Neotropics into southeastern Brazil. However, newly conducted research restructured the species with a substantial taxonomic revision, recognizing five additional taxa (i.e. O. koehleri, O. microphthalmus, O. potosiensis, O. rutherfordi, O. vittatus) in this species complex. This revision focused on populations in North America, Central America, and northern South America while neglecting the southern portion of its distribution. Here, we examine the taxonomic history of the complex and use it along with specimen data to resurrect O. acuminatus from southeastern Brazil. Finally, …

Questions Relating To The Continental Shelf Beyond 200 Nautical Miles: Delimitation, Delineation, And Revenue Sharing, Helmut Tuerk
International Law Studies
Article 76 UNCLOS provides a new definition of the legal continental shelf, which grants coastal States sovereign rights and jurisdiction extending to the outer edge of the continental margin. The broad-shelf States had to make two compromises to have that provision accepted, that is revenue-sharing for the benefit of the international community with respect to the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles, enshrined in Article 82 UNCLOS, and the delineation of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond that distance “on the basis of” recommendations by the CLCS, in order that these limits may become “final and binding.” In …

The Dynamics Of Gender Differences On Tourism Governance In Indonesia, Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni, Roel Popping, Rara Sugiarti, Rino Ardhian Nugroho
BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi
Research on gender and tourism is very important at least because of three reasons. First, processes involved in tourism are constructed out of gender ideologies in the society. Second, gender relations contribute to the dynamics of the fluidity of gender identity in tourism. Finally, gender perspective is a tool for understanding the relationship between tourism and social process. Unfortunately, there have been limited studies on gender in tourism. This study offers empirical evidence of gender in tourism governance from Indonesia’s experience. It assesses the gender differences in tourism governance by proposing three variables, namely involvement, competence, and barriers to women …

Crowd Management is always a challenging task when people gather in large numbers. Crowd disasters in India, including recurring incidents at religious venues, demands a crowd management system developed on the characteristics of the place, event, and participants. Assessment of carrying capacity is the prime process to design crowd management protocols and regulations. Carrying capacity assessment of religious gathering venues in India is often an overlooked process. The present study assessed the crowd carrying capacity of Sabarimala pilgrimage, Kerala, India. Physical carrying capacity assessment methods used for tourism venues have been applied and contextualised for crowd carrying capacity assessment. Characteristics …

Energy costs are large and increasing in rural Alaska communities, so communities are turning to renewable energy. While, many of these communities have a mixed subsistence-cash economy, the relationship between renewable energy and subsistence has not been studied. Tanana, Alaska has a biomass program and we conducted interviews with 61 households in 2017 to understand how residents perceive the program and its association with subsistence activities. We analyzed Alaska Department of Fish & Game subsistence surveys from 89 communities to estimate differences in subsistence harvest between households that harvest wood and those that do not. Interviews indicated that people who …
