Street Children Life: Structure And Family Function At Cni Night Market Jakarta, Shinta Doriza, Arini Himmataki F.A.H, Nurlaela A. Mashabi
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
The choice of being a street child is not a child’s desire. Children as part of the family have family structures and functions that play an important role in the child’s well-being. Roles exist in every family and these roles have the goal of helping families maintain structures (Garfat 2012) and family functions. The purpose of the research is to find out the structure and function of street children’s families in Pasar Malam CNI West Jakarta. The research uses qualitative methods and descriptive approaches. Data collection analysis is done with observations, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques use interactive model …

The Use Of Tobacco Pipes In Identifying And Separating Contexts On Smuttynose Island, Maine, Arthur R. Clausnitzer Jr.
The Use Of Tobacco Pipes In Identifying And Separating Contexts On Smuttynose Island, Maine, Arthur R. Clausnitzer Jr.
Northeast Historical Archaeology
Five years of excavation on Smuttynose Island, Isles of Shoals, Maine has recovered a large number of artifacts. These artifacts are related to nearly four hundred years of European use and occupation of the island, and include over 7,000 fragments of white clay tobacco pipes. Unfortunately, the specific soil conditions of the site often made field identification of different contexts difficult during the excavation process. This paper explores the use of clay pipes in the separation and identification of different stratigraphic contexts. Questions addressed include the utility of various stem-bore dating methods, and the use of identifying the origin of …

Inscriptions: Narrating The Spatial Dynamics Of The Immaterial Interior, Arif Rahman Wahid, Kristanti Dewi Paramita, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Interiority
This paper explores inscription as a projection of the spatial dynamics of a setting, beyond a historical or cultural symbol in a context, and highlights that inscription—a written or carved message on a surface—is an element that immaterially demonstrates a more in-depth narrative of an interior. This paper focuses on exploring inscriptions embedded in various production settings in Jakarta and Central Java, collecting individual and observational accounts on the production of such inscriptions and their meanings. The study suggests that inscriptions demonstrate various roles, from providing information, mediating different spaces and performing as tools to assist activities. Inscriptions may traverse …
Problematizing Florida’S Extended Reading Time Policy: A Critical Investigation Of Place, Demographics, And Curricula, Carrie L. Gentner
Problematizing Florida’S Extended Reading Time Policy: A Critical Investigation Of Place, Demographics, And Curricula, Carrie L. Gentner
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate Florida’s extended reading time (ERT) policy as enacted during the 2016-2017 school year. This policy requires elementary schools ranking among the 300 lowest performing in the state, as measured by state assessments, to provide an additional hour of reading instruction beyond the regular school day. Extending upon the work of a pilot study suggesting an overrepresentation of minoritized students within low 300 schools, this study presents the geographic, demographic, and socioeconomic distributions of the ERT mandate for a criterion sample of seven districts. Further, the pilot study indicated an underrepresentation of minoritized …

Design Of Porous Carbons For Supercapacitor Applications For Different Organic Solvent-Electrolytes, J Bates, F Markoulidis, C Lekakou, Gm Laudone
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The challenge of optimizing the pore size distribution of porous electrodes for different electrolytes is encountered in supercapacitors, lithium-ion capacitors and hybridized battery-supercapacitor devices. A volume-averaged continuum model of ion transport, taking into account the pore size distribution, is employed for the design of porous electrodes for electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) in this study. After validation against experimental data, computer simulations investigate two types of porous electrodes, an activated carbon coating and an activated carbon fabric, and three electrolytes: 1.5 M TEABF4 in acetonitrile (AN), 1.5 M TEABF4 in propylene carbonate (PC), and 1 M LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate:ethyl methyl …
The Market As Negotiation, Rebecca Hollander-Blumoff, Matthew T. Bodie
The Market As Negotiation, Rebecca Hollander-Blumoff, Matthew T. Bodie
Notre Dame Law Review
Our economic system counts on markets to allocate most of our societal resources. The law often treats markets as discrete entities, with a native intelligence and structure that provides clear answers to questions about prices and terms. In reality, of course, markets are much messier—they are agglomerations of negotiations by individual parties. Despite theoretical and empirical work on markets and on negotiation, legal scholars have largely overlooked the connection between the two areas in considering how markets are constructed and regulated.
This Article brings together scholarship in law, economics, sociology, and psychology to better understand the role that negotiation plays …
Spatial Patterns And Drivers Of Nonperennial Flow Regimes In The Contiguous United States, Kendra Kaiser
Spatial Patterns And Drivers Of Nonperennial Flow Regimes In The Contiguous United States, Kendra Kaiser
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Over half of global rivers and streams lack perennial flow, and understanding the distribution and drivers of their flow regimes is critical for understanding their hydrologic, biogeochemical, and ecological functions. We analyzed nonperennial flow regimes using 540 U.S. Geological Survey watersheds across the contiguous United States from 1979 to 2018. Multivariate analyses revealed regional differences in no-flow fraction, date of first no flow, and duration of the dry-down period, with further divergence between natural and human-altered watersheds. Aridity was a primary driver of no-flow metrics at the continental scale, while unique combinations of climatic, physiographic and anthropogenic drivers emerged at …
Algorithmic Legal Metrics, Dan L. Burk
Algorithmic Legal Metrics, Dan L. Burk
Notre Dame Law Review
Predictive algorithms are increasingly being deployed in a variety of settings to determine legal status. Algorithmic predictions have been used to determine provision of health care and social services, to allocate state resources, and to anticipate criminal behavior or activity. Further applications have been proposed to determine civil and criminal liability or to “personalize” legal default rules. Deployment of such artificial intelligence (AI) systems has properly raised questions of algorithmic bias, fairness, transparency, and due process. But little attention has been paid to the known sociological costs of using predictive algorithms to determine legal status. A large and growing social …

Earthquakes have become one of the leading causes of death from natural hazards in the last fifty years. Continuous efforts have been made to understand the physical characteristics of earthquakes and the interaction between the physical hazards and the environments so that appropriate warnings may be generated before earthquakes strike. However, earthquake forecasting is not trivial at all. Reliable forecastings should include the analysis and the signals indicating the coming of a significant quake. Unfortunately, these signals are rarely evident before earthquakes occur, and therefore it is challenging to detect such precursors in seismic analysis. Among the available technologies for …

The collection, processing, and analysis of remote sensing data since the early 1970s has rapidly improved our understanding of change on the Earth’s surface. While satellite-based Earth observation has proven to be of vast scientific value, these data are typically confined to recent decades of observation and often lack important thematic detail. Here, we advance in this arena by constructing new spatially explicit settlement data for the United States that extend back to the early 19th century and are consistently enumerated at fine spatial and temporal granularity (i.e. 250m spatial and 5-year temporal resolution). We create these time series using …

Beekeeping Practices And Challenges In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia: Adoption Of New Technologies And Selection Of Bee Species, Ella M. Poole
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Apiculture (or beekeeping) is a highly profitable industry in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi national government has recognized the sector as having the potential to grow and improve the quality of life in rural areas. To expand the industry, Saudi government officials and academics are calling for beekeepers to switch from using traditional hives to moveable-frame box hives and from keeping indigenous bees to importing foreign bees. Although both changes have been shown to increase honey productivity, they are opposed by most Saudi beekeepers and increase the risk for the spread of dangerous bee diseases. This paper explores Saudi arguments for …

The Neutrality Myth: Integrating Critical Media Literacy Into The Introductory Communication Course, Meggie Mapes, Lindsey Kraus, Elnaz Parviz, Joshua Morgan
Basic Communication Course Annual
Our current cultural moment requires reflective urgency. COVID-19 has forced a collective pedagogical confrontation with new media’s materiality, and how such materiality intersects with, for example, the public speaking traditions within introductory communication courses. While COVID-19 has spotlighted online-only educational conversations, our disciplinary need to refocus new media introductory course curricular practices pre-dates the pandemic. This essay extends Rhonda Hammer’s (2009) critical media literacy framework into the introductory course, a practice whereby students are empowered to “read, critique, and produce media” rather than be passive consumers. We explore critical media literacy as pedagogically fruitful in identifying and resisting dominant ideologies …

Throughout the course of the pandemic, Population Council researchers have been tracking how COVID-19 data is reported and analyzed using a comprehensive analysis of 62 COVID-19 data sources from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and health departments across 50 states and the District of Columbia (DC), and ten cities. We assessed data completeness for COVID-19 testing and four outcomes (cases, hospitalizations, recoveries, and deaths), and examined disaggregation of COVID-19 testing and outcomes by a core set of demographic indicators, including age, race/ethnicity, sex/gender, geography, and underlying health conditions. This analysis also investigated how social and community level …
