One in every twenty-five persons in America is a racial/ethnic minority who lives in a rural area. Our objective was to summarize how racism and, subsequently, the social determinants of health disproportionately affect rural racial/ethnic minority populations, provide a review of the cancer disparities experienced by rural racial/ethnic minority groups, and recommend policy, research, and intervention approaches to reduce these disparities. We found that rural Black and American Indian/Alaska Native populations experience greater poverty and lack of access to care, which expose them to greater risk of developing cancer and experiencing poorer cancer outcomes in treatment and ultimately survival. There …

As the COVID-19 pandemic moved beyond the initial heavily impacted and urbanized Northeast region of the United States, hotspots of cases in other urban areas ensued across the country in early 2020. In South Carolina, the spatial and temporal patterns were different, initially concentrating in small towns within metro counties, then diffusing to centralized urban areas and rural areas. When mitigation restrictions were relaxed, hotspots reappeared in the major cities. This paper examines the county-scale spatial and temporal patterns of confirmed cases of COVID-19 for South Carolina from March 1st—September 5th, 2020. We first describe the initial diffusion of the …

Risk Management Decision Making For Security And Trust In Hardware Supply Chains, Zachary A. Collier, Thomas L. Polmateer, James H. Lambert
CESUN Conference
Modern cyber-physical systems are enabled by electronic hardware and embedded systems. The security of these sub-components is a concern during the design and operational phases of cyber-physical system life cycles. Compromised electronics can result in mission-critical failures, unauthorized access, and other severe consequences. As systems become more complex and feature greater connectivity, system owners must make decisions regarding how to mitigate risks and ensure resilience and trust. This paper provides an overview of research efforts related to assessing and managing risks, resilience, and trust with an emphasis on electronic hardware and embedded systems. The research takes a decision-oriented perspective, drawing …

The role of service deliverables in the early phases of service development has been studied both in academia and practice. We lack knowledge on the impact of service deliverables for the later phases of the service development process in which service designers are usually not engaged. In this paper, we aim to understand what attributes of service deliverables help business clients to act upon the deliverables on their own after service designers are gone.
To elicit actionable attributes of service deliverables, e.g., reports, we conducted semi-structured interviews with five leading and recognizable service design consultants from Poland who lead service …
An Application Framework Of Service Design For Servitization, Peng Lu
An Application Framework Of Service Design For Servitization, Peng Lu
ServDes Conference Series
Einola et al. (as cited in Kohtamäki, Rabetino, & Einola, 2018, p. 186) pointed out that “the tensions that manufacturers face when transitioning from manufacturing products toward the provision of customized integrated solutions are often paradoxical in nature,” which could be taken as the cultural and corporate challenges of adopting a servitization business strategy (Baines et al., 2009; Viet et al., 2013). As an emerging design field, service design offers a holistic, human-centered, co-creative approach to developing new services (Costa et al., 2018), which has the potential to be embodied in the process of servitization. This short paper tries to …

Challenges Facing Service Design Practitioners: A Pilot Study, Johan Blomkvist, Tim Overkamp, Vanessa Rodrigues
ServDes Conference Series
This paper presents the result of a pilot survey study about challenges faced by practicing service designers. Challenges include: 1) low awareness of what service design is and how to use service design in organisations; 2) issues with involving people in the design process; such as getting the right stakeholders on board and doing user research; 3) assessing the business and organisational value of service design and the extent to which it is able to actually change roles within organisations; 4) design in the organisation where silos, culture, maturity, willingness to change and acceptance of design can all limit the …

Service design (SD) is acknowledged as an approach that can help organisations to address service innovation. However, organisations are struggling to build design capabilities and develop sustainable SD cultures within the organisations. This paper focuses on this central challenge by exploring how a small and medium-sized “non-design-intensive organisation” can integrate SD both as a way to develop internal design capabilities and as an approach to service innovation. We report on an action research study in which we initiated seven SD micro cases. The findings show how our designed SD learning activities developed autonomous SD initiatives within the organisation, and thus …
From Product Centricity To Services: Design Workshops And Maps As Tools In Strategy Articulation, Olivia Harre, Lene Nielsen
From Product Centricity To Services: Design Workshops And Maps As Tools In Strategy Articulation, Olivia Harre, Lene Nielsen
ServDes Conference Series
This paper explores how an IT company wants to change from product- centricity to servitization. A cross-functional customer journey workshop mapped the current state from the customer’s point of view, and by identifying opportunities, it identifies gaps in becoming a service organization. Activities in the workshop focused on mapping a current customer journey and a proposition of a customer journey. The case explores how a service design workshop and tools can be used in strategic work, to support and facilitate a discussion on changes needed to be customer-centric, going beyond technology and features. The workshop and maps proved useful in …

Moving Towards Plurality: Unpacking The Role Of Service Design In Relation To Culture, Zhipeng Duan, Josina Vink, Simon Clatworthy
ServDes Conference Series
Over the past two decades, there has been growing discussion about the relationship between service design and culture. However, these discussions are often fragmented and ambiguous, limiting the nuance in how culture is understood in service design. As such, the purpose of this paper is to build a more comprehensive understanding of the role of service design in relation to culture by drawing together discussions from existing literature. What emerges from our literature analysis is a framework presenting four different views on the role of service design in relation to culture, each with distinct interpretations of culture and its connection …

Proliferating Service Design In A Large Multi-Cultural It Organization – An Inside-Out Approach, Ravi Mahamuni, Bhaskarjyoti Das, Sylvan Lobo
ServDes Conference Series
In light of product companies shifting towards services and service companies embracing service design approaches, there is a greater need for the proliferation of service design. However, organizations are still not fully ready for this shift. Notably, Information Technology (IT) service organizations provide a unique premise, where employees engage and facilitate their customers to undergo the journey of adopting service design into their service innovation processes, while they themselves are similarly undergoing the same journey. Amidst the different change management theories available, to help their employees learn, design and deliver better customer services, organizations are exploring and adopting different approaches …

Service Design (SD) and Design Thinking (DT) share many pillars - both are human-centred, holistic, iterative, real, collaborative - and DT cognitive processes are widely used to design services. Both have Western roots and both are informed by culture (Thoring et al., 2014), therefore, Western culture is mirrored in how these processes are structured, comprehended and applied. With her research, the author aimed at gaining new understandings on the practice of SD outside Western culture. What happens when a Western thinking model and its application into the services sector are “moved” into a different culture? In order to create value, …
Service Designing In Psychiatric Care, Melisa Duque, Laurene Vaughan, Sarah Pink, Shanti Sumartojo
Service Designing In Psychiatric Care, Melisa Duque, Laurene Vaughan, Sarah Pink, Shanti Sumartojo
ServDes Conference Series
Designing services for care for a psychiatric precinct within the context of a major hospital development project is challenging. This paper reports on research that contributes to contemporary discourse on the interconnections between service design and infrastructures of healthcare. This is what Bitner (1992) named as a ‘servicescape’- the integrated, multidisciplinary, physical, sensorial and experiential sites of care provision. Between 2016 -2018 the authors undertook a design anthropology evaluation that identified the experiences of situated service provision by people within a psychiatric precinct located within a regional hospital. In this discussion we identify some of the insights from this project.

Teu Le Va (Nurture The Space) In-Between Intersectionality, Marion Muliaumaseali’I
ServDes Conference Series
A workshop focused on the ServDes. 2020 theme of ‘Plurality’ with the intention to provide innovative tools that generate experiences validating participants from diverse backgrounds through the lens of Intersectionality and the Samoan concept of space; called ‘Va’ or the space in-between. Pacific author and academic Albert Wendt states that: Va is the space between the between-ness, not empty space, not space that separates, but space that relates, that holds separate entities and things together in the Unity-that-is-All, the space that is context, giving meaning to things (Wendt,1996). Teu le Va is a call to nurture the space in-between, premised …

Approaching services as sociomaterial constellations might bring to the fore new temporalities and accountabilities in designing, beyond that of the immediate service (Kimbell & Blomberg, 2017). This work-in-progress paper draws on a processual study (Langley, 1999) from Norwegian health care. It is inspired by objectivist strands of Science and Technology Studies (STS), especially Actor-Network Theory (ANT) (e.g. Latour, 2005) it explores in what way non-humans might partake as co-designers in the development, provision and re-design of service delivery: finding policy ideas, legislation and ICT hard at work.

Determining the dynamics of surface hydrological connectivity in a landscape of multiple lakes with different sizes and depths is challenging. This is especially the case for ungagged, large areas of multi-lake systems. Integrated use of remote sensing and geostatistical analysis can be a useful approach for developing metrics that can be used to identify the hydrological connectivity and their changes. In this study, we conducted a geostatistical analysis of 18 wet and dry binary state rasters derived from Landsat images over a large ungauged multi-lake system, the Momoge National Nature Reserve in Northeast China. Our goal was to investigate applicability …
The Impacts Of Political Conflicts In Africa, Douglas Kimemia
The Impacts Of Political Conflicts In Africa, Douglas Kimemia
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
The number of conflicts and deaths in Africa is rooted in the complex constructions and conjectures of Africa’s political economies, weak institutions, social identities, and cultural ecologies, as configured by specific local, national, regional, and historical experiences. Using real-time data of violent and nonviolent events in Africa, this paper analyzes the most significant indicators. The paper finds that Gross Domestic Product, corruption, state legitimacy, ethnic fractionalization, political effectiveness, and polity are significant in modeling the likelihood of political instability. The paper concludes that African countries require reconfiguration of the public and social institutions without ignoring the human factor that accelerate …
Women, Peace And Security In Zimbabwe - The Case Of Conflict In Non War Zones, Rutendo Chabikwa
Women, Peace And Security In Zimbabwe - The Case Of Conflict In Non War Zones, Rutendo Chabikwa
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda is the United Nation’s (UN) key policy instrument for addressing gender violence in conflict zones. However, the agenda has been preoccupied with “hot” conflicts, and its application and relevance to sustained, but “low level” conflict situations is poorly conceptualized. This research considers this issue through a case study of Zimbabwe since 2000. I make the case for broadening the understanding of conflict as found in the WPS agenda.
This paper addresses the question: ‘How does the case of Zimbabwe exemplify the need for a broader understanding of conflict within the WPS agenda as …

Cle Working Paper No.1/2021--Grassroots And Litigation-Based Approaches To Advancing Indigenous Rights: Lessons From Extractive Industry Resistance In Mesoamerica, Justin Wiebe
Centre for Law and the Environment
Indigenous peoples are frequently recognized as excellent stewards of their traditional territories. These territories, which often exhibit extraordinary levels of biodiversity, face disproportionate and growing threats from extractive industry. In opposing these threats, Indigenous peoples increasingly rely on internationally-defined Indigenous rights, including those set out in UNDRIP and ILO Convention 169. It is uncertain, however, how these rights are most effectively advanced. In this paper, I tease out strategies — both grassroots-based and litigation-based — that show promise in this regard. Drawing on Waorani resistance to an oil auction in Ecuador and Indigenous resistance to a large-scale mining project in …

Examining Future Expansion Opportunities At The Morgantown Industrial Park, Brian Lego, Christiadi
Bureau of Business & Economic Research
The Morgantown Industrial Park (MIP) encompasses a wide area between the Monongahela River and Interstate-79, and currently houses approximately 20 companies. A new interchange on Interstate 79 at River Road (approximately mile marker 151) is expected to improve access to the industrial park in a substantial manner, allowing expanded access into the MIP and creating the opportunity to house a variety of new businesses from several sectors. In this study, we provide a brief look at the North Central West Virginia region’s economic and demographic characteristics as a means of assessing the area’s viability and attractiveness to potential businesses. Measures …

Wayfinding: Spiritual Resilience For Global Servants, Joyce Reed
Wayfinding: Spiritual Resilience For Global Servants, Joyce Reed
Doctor of Ministry
This dissertation proposes that mission agencies who develop a spiritual formation paradigm that incorporates the principles of wayfinding to navigate personal, vocational, and spiritual shifts enhance cross-cultural resiliency for missionaries (also known as global servants). Section One highlights the problem: mission agencies are not adequately addressing the numerous stressors that global servants constantly manage resulting in less healthy, unhealthy or toxic behaviors. In addition, organizational and historical mission culture often creates untenable expectations that contribute to the global servant's stress. Section Two analyzes how stressors might alternatively be addressed via pre-assignment counseling, sending churches, corporate support structures, or enhanced self-care. …

The Sobramesa Dinner Group: Discipline Boomers In Active Adult Living Communities, James Divine
Doctor of Ministry
Over the next 25 years, the American Church will be in a unique position to impact the eternity of almost 77 million people. As the Baby Boomer population moves into the third age of life, the church has the opportunity to reintroduce this population to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Within this large mission field is the added dimension of a large migration of retired and semi-retired people into Active Adult Living Communities (AALCs). While AALCs represent the largest-growing urban segment of the USA, the church is doing little to evangelize these communities. What the church does for these adults …
The Green Lectionary: Creation Care And The Revised Common Lectionary, George Jacob Bolton V
The Green Lectionary: Creation Care And The Revised Common Lectionary, George Jacob Bolton V
Doctor of Ministry
As Christian communities become increasingly interested in engaging with humanity’s biblical connection to the earth, and the spiritual response to this relationship, there is uncertainty regarding the most contextually appropriate methods to pursue. Impressive projects that conserve and honor elements of creation, activities such as community gardens or solar panel installation projects, are often disconnected from the liturgical life of the congregation. Conversely, honoring creation and the biblical connection people of faith have with nature is a widely under practiced liturgical activity. This paper argues that the most direct and practical method to enhance a congregation’s awareness of their spiritual …

A Taste Of The Kingdom: Re-Imaging And Re-Articulating Kingdom Community, Jay J. Anderson
Doctor of Ministry
Modern churches find themselves in liminal cultures, requiring new understandings of ecclesia (re-imaging) and new approaches to communication (resigning). They also find themselves in the midst of a collapse of traditional community realities, including neighborhoods. The express intention of this researcher of lifetime PNW zip-codes is to encourage and inspire Pacific Northwest Jesus gatherings to reimage kingdom community. Each zip code contains unique cultural components, all of which need the life-giving inbreaking of the Kingdom of God. My contention is that when Jesus gatherings re-image kingdom community, freshly articulate ecclesiology, and appropriately flavor their communities with local terroir, each zip …

Places are filled with stories, with histories that shape how people understand the nature of a place. Places are unique sets of trajectories – each with a story – coming into contact. However, just as much as places are defined by their histories, they are also shaped by the histories that are forgotten, or far too often, actively suppressed through dominant narratives. After all, dominant media of spatial, public memory – for example, plaques and public monuments – often reproduce dominant narratives of a place, narratives created by the powerful. This project examines how digital placemaking can be deployed through …
