No. 01: South-South Migration, Food Insecurity And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jonathan Crush, Diana Thomaz, Sujata Ramachandran
No. 01: South-South Migration, Food Insecurity And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jonathan Crush, Diana Thomaz, Sujata Ramachandran
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
The implementation of global migration governance processes such as the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Global Compact for Migration has been stalled by the COVID-19 crisis as flows of and opportunities for international migrants shrink through the containment strategies adopted by most governments in response to the pandemic. Migrants have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and the policies taken in response to the pandemic, with higher risk of exposure to the virus, greater likelihood of working in sectors that have experienced major economic downturn, lower rates of access to social support mechanisms and health care, and increased vulnerability to …

No. 02: Food Remittances, Migration And Rural-Urban Linkages In Kenya, Elizabeth Opiyo Onyango, Jonathan Crush, Samuel Owuor
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
Rural-urban migrants in Sub-Saharan Africa do not generally cut their links with rural homes and much has been written about the character, types and implications of connections between rural areas and rapidly growing cities. The persistence of circular migration and the perpetuation of rural-urban connectivity is a distinctive feature of Kenyan urbanization. Informal non-market food remitting from rural to urban areas has received little attention in comparison with cash remitting from city to countryside. This paper presents new evidence from a household survey in Nairobi on the extent, frequency and nature of informal food remitting from rural areas to migrants …

A set of 77 standards for environmental education that should be integrated in the geography curriculum could be reached at the first phase of …
The Conscience Of The Dollar: Are Religious Donors Sensitive To Moral Infractions?, Bradley Yam
The Conscience Of The Dollar: Are Religious Donors Sensitive To Moral Infractions?, Bradley Yam
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Do religious donors give strategically or idealistically? The entanglement between the conservative Republican party and religious groups, particularly evangelical Christianity, on issues of abortion, sexual mores, and family values makes it difficult to analyze this question along voting lines. Regardless of how one votes, citizens and organizations can still punish their political leaders for moral infractions by voting with their wallets. This study aims to discern if there is a relationship between political scandals and religious donations.
Access To Drinking Water And The Empowerment Of Women In The Southwest Coast Of Bangladesh: Intersections Of Gender, Class, And Space, Sunehra Subah
Access To Drinking Water And The Empowerment Of Women In The Southwest Coast Of Bangladesh: Intersections Of Gender, Class, And Space, Sunehra Subah
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The low-lying southwest coast in Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable areas to the effects of climate change, with great water scarcity and high levels of arsenic and salinity. Women are the main accessors and users of water in this area due to their restriction to work in domestic spaces. Their gendered relationships to water in this area play a role in their empowerment and powerlessness. These relationships can be looked at through four examples of power: power over the body, power over mobility, power over decisions, and power over finances. It’s critical to consider the intersections of gender, …
Social Media And The Construction And Propagation Of Populist-Nationalist Discourse, Paula Pineda
Social Media And The Construction And Propagation Of Populist-Nationalist Discourse, Paula Pineda
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The growing overlap between three important phenomena—the increasingly widespread use of social media (especially as a tool for political communication), the current populist zeitgeist (as described by Cas Mudde), and the rise of right-wing nationalism—make the question of how social media can be employed as a platform for the amplification of populist-nationalist discourse particularly pressing. This paper explores the affordances of social media that allow for its employment in the creation and propagation of populist-nationalist discourse, particularly the elective affinity between social media and populism, the way that social media can provide a platform for the emotive element of populist-nationalist …
Sounding The Alarm: Down-Ballot Setback For The Democrats In 2020, Yaakov Huba
Sounding The Alarm: Down-Ballot Setback For The Democrats In 2020, Yaakov Huba
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The 2020 general election turned out more American voters than any other election, its monumental stakes commanding the attention of the world. While the focus in the race’s aftermath has primarily been the top of the ticket, the rebuke of President Trump’s time in office, the equally important down-ballot races have been largely passed over. Many major political analysts like the Cook Political Report predicted that Democrats would expand their House majority by 5-10 seats. Yet, the Democratic Party ended up losing 10 seats1. During the certification of election results, I collected data on incumbents in the US House of …
The Impact Of Climate Change On Security In The Middle East: A Review Of The Literature, Yara El-Khatib
The Impact Of Climate Change On Security In The Middle East: A Review Of The Literature, Yara El-Khatib
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The Middle East, which is already plagued by a series of security threats–such as terrorism, religious conflict, political instability, and more–is also an increasingly water-scarce and climate-vulnerable region. In this review, I examine the most recent and relevant literature on the debate of: how will, and how has climate change affected security in the Middle East? I examine five articles and one book that tackle this question, and I organize these sources based on the extent to which they argue that climate change is a determinant of insecurity in the region. While a few authors argue that climate change has …
“Developing” Gender Equality: A Transnational Feminist Critique Of International Development Theory And Practice, Caroline Crystal
“Developing” Gender Equality: A Transnational Feminist Critique Of International Development Theory And Practice, Caroline Crystal
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Gender equality is increasingly understood as fundamental to international development, despite how the field differs from feminism in its intellectual tradition and ultimate goals. However, legitimacy, gender and understandings of gender equality are transnational and not global modalities, and even the most well-meaning institutions are not absent from global power relations or individual subjectivities. Often located in the “West,” international development organizations frequently make assumptions shaped by Western hegemony and therefore reproduce the very inequalities they claim to address. I explore the overlaps and asymmetries between transnational feminism and the gender equality programs of international development organizations such as the …
Environmental Racism In Historical Context: The Robbins Incinerator Debate, 1980s-1990s, Brian Reyes
Environmental Racism In Historical Context: The Robbins Incinerator Debate, 1980s-1990s, Brian Reyes
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Conventional narratives of environmental racism paint a “perpetrator-victim” scenario, in which an environmental hazard is forced upon a powerless nonwhite community. This is not always the case. In 1988, a deal was struck to locate an incinerator in an all-Black suburb of Chicago called Robbins. The debate over the Robbins incinerator, which lasted nearly a decade, emerged as a particularly notable incident of environmental racism because of the willingness of Robbins’ Black leadership and residents to accept the plan. Their support was the result of a longstanding history of racialized underdevelopment and political neglect which had left the town destitute …
In Search Of Play, Margaret Saunders
In Search Of Play, Margaret Saunders
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
This thesis addresses the existence, inclusion, and access to play spaces in the built environment. It proposes that play is fundamental to the wellbeing of people of all ages, not only children, and analyzes how play spaces are or are not inclusive to people of all ages, then further addresses this in regard to gender, race, and socioeconomic class. This project presents the perspectives of social theorists such as Johan Huizinga, Guy Debord/ SI International, and Henri Lefebvre to analyze the role of space and social production of play. Additionally, it looks at historical case studies like New Babylon, Modellen …
The Keiretsu Advantage: How Japanese Automakers Thwarted American Competition, Jasper Boers
The Keiretsu Advantage: How Japanese Automakers Thwarted American Competition, Jasper Boers
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Today, Japan’s auto industry is renowned for its dominance of foreign markets. Japanese cars are cheap and fuel-efficient, undercutting larger, more expensive automobiles from Europe and America. Scholarship on recent Japanese industrial development tends to prioritize a ‘developmental state’ and robust industrial policy in shielding Japanese manufacturers from trade liberalization. This paper will argue that, while the industrial policy steered by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) played a significant role in advancing the interests of the Japanese auto industry, it was ultimately the unique trust-based keiretsu conglomerate structure that gave Japanese auto producers a comparative advantage vis-à-vis …
Resisting Gentrification: Everyday Politics & Collective Action From Oakland To Madrid, Caitlyn Clark, Stephanie Redden, Sakena Abedin
Resisting Gentrification: Everyday Politics & Collective Action From Oakland To Madrid, Caitlyn Clark, Stephanie Redden, Sakena Abedin
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
!is paper utilizes case studies in resistance to housing insecurity and neoliberalism to demonstrate the successful combinations of everyday resistance with collective action. Presenting the case studies as illustrations of two modes of analysis (Feminist Everyday International Political Economy and Marxism) previously thought of as somewhat contradictory, this paper argues that these models can strengthen one another. Using the examples of the Moms 4 Housing movement to resist gentrification and affordability crisis in Oakland, CA, and the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca (PAH) that followed the Spanish housing and eviction crises, this paper addresses the possibility to combine the …
Evaluating Sustainable Frameworks And The Interrelationality Of The Sustainable Development Goals, Lawrence Stephen Early Iv
Evaluating Sustainable Frameworks And The Interrelationality Of The Sustainable Development Goals, Lawrence Stephen Early Iv
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Sustainable development in the 21st century has utilized an array of metrics to evaluate the success of cities and nations in three conventionally defined pillars of sustainability: social, economic and environmental. Inspired by Elkington’s Triple Bottom Line, the success of nations dedicated to sustainable development has been characterized by targets achieved within these pillars, as most recently and cohesively defined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The paper argues that these pillars (a) fail to successfully bridge the gap between sustainable targets and the principles guiding sustainability; (b) engenders the consequence of preferential “weight” being attributed unevenly between …
Jewish Ancestral Languages And Communicating The Sephardic Experience: The Judeospanish Of Tela De Sevoya, Julia Kahn
Jewish Ancestral Languages And Communicating The Sephardic Experience: The Judeospanish Of Tela De Sevoya, Julia Kahn
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Judeo-Spanish, the ancestral language of Sephardic Jews, enjoys fewer speakers, literature, and less scholarly attention compared to Yiddish, its counterpart spoken by Ashkenazi Jews. Nonetheless, Judeo-Spanish captures the rich experiences of its speakers through exile, persecution, and perseverance, embodying unique Jewish-Spanish culture and religious practice. It has received fresh recognition in the last two centuries from scholars and Sephardim themselves, and the quincentennial of the 1492 Jewish expulsion from Spain inspired a new Sephardic autobiographical genre, where Sephardic authors grapple with their heritages and language, dimming from assimilation and the Shoa. Myriam Moscona is one such author whose unique descent …

“But The City Made Us New, And We Made It Ours”: Reflections On Urban Space And Indigeneity In Tommy Orange’S There There, Meghanlata Gupta, Nolan Arkansas
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Native American writers in the United States have often used literature to celebrate their communities, defy stereotypes, and share their histories on their own terms. In the past few years, this movement has seen another wave, with artists and scholars engaging in literary storytelling to shed light on Indigenous resistance efforts in the United States. Tommy Orange is no exception, writing about urban Indigenous life in his 2018 novel There There. While There There positions the city as a product of settler colonialism, the book also illustrates the ways in which urban Indigenous peoples subvert colonial mechanisms by celebrating tribal …

Disparities in human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination exist between urban (metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs)) and rural (non-MSAs) regions. To address whether the HPV vaccine’s impact differs by urbanicity, we examined trends in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades 2 or 3 and adenocarcinoma in situ (collectively, CIN2+) incidence in MSAs and non-MSAs among Tennessee Medicaid (TennCare)-enrolled women aged 18–39 years and among the subset screened for cervical cancer in Tennessee, United States. Using TennCare claims data, we identified annual age-group-specific (18–20, 21–24, 25–29, 30–34, and 35–39 years) CIN2+ incidence (2008–2018). Joinpoint regression was used to identify trends over time. Age–period–cohort Poisson regression models …

Fall 2021 course syllabus for SOC 619 (Sociology): Religion, Gender, and Sexuality
Course description: Religion looms large in debates over gender and sexuality in U.S. society. It is difficult to discuss LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, feminism, or reproductive rights without also addressing religion. This course takes the intersections of religion, gender, and sexuality seriously and asks: How does religion help make gender and sexual norms feel moral and true? Is religion always oppressive to gender and sexual outlaws? How does religion structure LGBTQ+ lives and histories in conservative Christian contexts like Mississippi? This course also gives significant time and attention …

Harnessing Big Earth Data To Facilitate Land Degradation Neutrality Goals—Practices And Prospects, Xiaosong Li, Qi Lu, Xiaoxia Jia
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Transforming Our World:The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in which land degradation neutrality (LDN) is one of the important targets of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 15.3). However, due to varies indicative symptoms of land degradation in different climatic/geographical zones and land use types, the complexity of factors affecting land degradation or improvement, and the limits of spatial and temporal scope to define land degradation, for a long time, there was lack of common accepted methodology to identify land degradation, and short of key data set to establish reference baselines, and measure progress …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Uneven progresses have been widely detected among goals or regions in global sustainable development, which are ascribed to the heterogeneous resource and environmental conditions and trade-offs among goals. In-depth understanding and efforts to reduce such uneven progresses are essential for the holistic achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs). This study discusses how bBig Earth Data supports the assessment of the even development among targets and regions by pointing out its advantages in providing high-frequency and more timely data products with higher spatial resolution for the currently poorly achieved SDGs regarding essential human needs and environmental protection. Moreover, the Big …
