Spatial Modelling For Cholera Incidence Rates In Morogoro Municipality, Tanzania, Caroline Ngereza, Rosalia S. Katapa, Ali R. Mniachi Aug 2021

Spatial Modelling For Cholera Incidence Rates In Morogoro Municipality, Tanzania, Caroline Ngereza, Rosalia S. Katapa, Ali R. Mniachi

Tanzania Journal of Science

Spatial modelling was conducted to examine community factors associated with cholera incidence rates in Morogoro Municipality. The study employed both secondary (cholera cases) and primary (geographic coordinates of community risk factors) data. Spatial lag model was applied in examining association between the variables. All wards of Morogoro Municipality were considered in the study to capture their variations because cholera cases have a tendency to be clustered. Results indicated that market density, distance to the market and distance to the dumpster are significant factors associated with cholera incidence rates in the wards (p < 0.05). Geographically weighted Poisson model was used to show the variations of those factors between the wards in Municipality. A statistically significant positive association of cholera incidence rates; and market density was only found in Mazimbu ward (p < 0.05) and distance from the community to the dumpster was found in Kihonda, Kingolwira, Bigwa, Kichangani, Kilakala and Boma wards (p < 0.001) and some wards at the centre of the municipality which are Mji Mkuu and Kingo (p < 0.05). A statistically significant negative association of cholera incidence rates and distance from the centre of the community to the market was found in Kihonda, Kingolwira and Kichangani (p < 0.001) and Bigwa wards (p < 0.05). Therefore, measures taken to control and prevent cholera disease should base on the variations of the risk factors found in the Municipal wards.  Keywords:    Cholera incidence rate, Spatial lag regression model, Community risk factor, Geographically weighted Poisson model

Assessment Of Farm Households’ Vulnerability To Desertification In Rural Dry Lands Of Katsina State, Nigeria, Olanrewaju Yusuf Yahaya

Tanzania Journal of Science

The purpose of this study was to use a Vulnerability Index (VI) to assess farm households' vulnerability to desertification in Northern Katsina's dry land ecosystem. The specific objectives were to identify socio-economic characteristics of farm households; and determine the degree of their vulnerability to desertification. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select 633 respondents from 18 rural communities across six Local Government Areas (LGAs). Data from 21 indicators for the three components of vulnerability (exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity) were used to measure the degree of vulnerability and thus, classify households into less, moderate and highly vulnerable. The …

This series of events brings Indigenous perspectives from 22 Indigenous speakers across the U.S. and Arctic regions to discussions of sustainable futures within the New Hampshire community. There is growing movement in the academic community to understand how Indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage can deepen our thinking about sustainable futures. While most researchers recognize that anthropogenic climate change and other sustainability challenges require humanistic as well as scientific approaches, many have yet to thoroughly understand the colonial legacies that initiated many of these sustainability problems and continue to impede our study and solutions. The 2020-2021 Sidore Series was designed to …

Pu Sapi Dan Lembu Agra: Kajian Antroponimi Berdasarkan Isi Prasasti Jawa Kuno (Abad Ke-9–16 M), Chacuk Tri Sasongko, Ninie Susanti

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Javanese literary works, especially the Panji tales, often feature human characters with animal names, such as Kuda Narawangsa, Kebo Kanigara, and Kidangwalangka. This naming phenomenon can also be found in old Javanese inscriptions. Recent studies generally concluded that such naming tradition occurred during the Kadiri-Majapahit era, and this was closely related to the banner of the army and the identity of makasirkasir. This study aims to reveal the motivation behind the naming tradition and the relationship between personal name, social status, and occupation of the person so named throughout the ancient Javanese era. This study uses Nyström’s onomastical approach, especially …

‘Damn Deleuze’: The Unexpected Artefacts Of Reading Together, Maureen A. Flint, Carlson H. Coogler Aug 2021

‘Damn Deleuze’: The Unexpected Artefacts Of Reading Together, Maureen A. Flint, Carlson H. Coogler

Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education

What does reading together produce? As we read A Thousand Plateaus together, Deleuze and Guattari butted into our dreams, our art-making, and our everyday lives. We found that their concepts were active, blurring the lines between theory, method and art. In this paper, we follow these invasions and interruptions of our thinking and living, collecting and discussing them as artefacts that help us make sense of reading and writing together as methodological, theoretical, artful inquiry. By taking up and sharing artefacts -- fragments of encounters, snapshots of artmaking, quotes from novels or poetry that embedded in our conversations about haecceity …

(Re)Opening Closed/Ness: Hauntological Engagements With Historical Markers In The Threshold Of Mastery, Bretton A. Varga, Timothy Monreal Aug 2021

(Re)Opening Closed/Ness: Hauntological Engagements With Historical Markers In The Threshold Of Mastery, Bretton A. Varga, Timothy Monreal

Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education

This project explored functionalities of (ghostly) mastery within the radical context of institutionally historical designations. We first identified historical designations of our university campuses and then, using Jackson and Mazzei’s (2012) thinking with theory, entangled our hauntological perspectives with published “material” (e.g., university website articles, materials on official websites) and researcher generated photographs. As such, the purpose of this project is to loosen the grip of narrative mastery governing the designation of historical markers located throughout learning institutions. Thus, in unleashing ghosts/hauntings, we offer a theoretically informed opening towards troubling the vulnerability of history/ies, narratives, and spaces institutions seek to—and …

A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Educational Spaces And Black Identity Development, Kala Burrell-Craft, Danielle R. Eugene

Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education

Guided by Critical Race Theory, Racial Space Theory, and Black Identity Development through the lens of the Nigrescence model, this mixed-methods study explored the links between educational spaces/places and Black identity development in a sample of Black professional adults (n=39). Correlation analysis revealed a weak positive relationship between space and Black racial identity and little to no correlational effect between place and Black racial identity. Three themes were identified: educational spaces, HBCU versus PWI debate, and stages of Black identity development with each providing more depth of understanding of how educational spaces influence Black identity development. Study implications are discussed.

Water resources management in Latin America and the Caribbean is particularly threatened by climatic, economic, and political pressures. To assess the region's ability to manage water resources, we conducted an unprecedented literature review of over 20 000 multilingual research articles using machine learning and an understanding of the socio-hydrologic landscape. Results reveal that the region's vulnerability to water-related stresses, and drivers such as climate change, is compounded by research blind spots in niche topics (reservoirs and risk assessment) and subregions (Caribbean nations), as well as by its reliance on an individual country (Brazil). A regional bright spot, Brazil, produces well-rounded …

Redesigning Walking Brochures Using Behaviour Change Theory: Implications For Walking Intentions In Natural Environments, Lewis R. Elliott, Mathew P. White, Lora E. Fleming, Charles Abraham, Adrian H. Taylor

Peninsula Medical School

Summary Natural environments can be used to promote health through facilitating recreational walking. However, efforts to encourage this often neglect messages identified in psychological research that are effective at influencing intentions to walk. This is despite the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence stating that promotional efforts should utilize theoretical frameworks of behaviour change and be targeted towards less active adults. As an illustrative example, this experiment compared a prototypical recreational walking brochure with an “enhanced” version including such persuasive messages on people’s intentions to walk for recreation in natural environments. The enhanced brochure heightened intentions for inexperienced recreational …

Financial Factors And The Propagation Of The Great Depression, Gustavo S. Cortes, Bryan Taylor, Marc D. Weidenmier Aug 2021

Financial Factors And The Propagation Of The Great Depression, Gustavo S. Cortes, Bryan Taylor, Marc D. Weidenmier

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We investigate the role of forward-looking financial factors in propagating the Great Depression. We find that a new hand-collected bank stock index is better at predicting the onset of the Great Depression than the aggregate stock market or failed bank deposits. The bank stock index explains almost one-third of the fluctuations in industrial production after five years. Analysis disaggregated at each Federal Reserve district shows that bank stocks capture forward-looking information about debt defaults and credit. Our results suggest that future studies of the credit channel during the Great Depression should incorporate bank stocks to better identify the impact of …

Presaharan, the case of Draa -Tafilalt (Morocco)

In the Oasis towns of Draa and Tafilalt '", Nobody can deny today, the urban component in the oasis reality. From then on, the city will monopolize in the very near future more than half of the global population of the oasis region of biosphere. This by two internal and external mechanisms.Administrative promotion and urban concentrations allowing an internal blossoming of the urban fact in rural areas. Similarly with the multiplication of urban driving functions, the city reinforces its capacities of polarization of the rural areas. Thus the …

Out-Of-Print Books As E-Books: A Collection Analysis, Mary Frances Calix

SLIS Connecting

In recent years, archival institutions have begun to digitally archive or preserve the items in their collections. This way, items are more accessible to those wanting to perform research but not necessarily handle the original documents and are not likely to be permanently damaged. One example of a digital preservation project is the one that forms the basis for this paper- the Oklahoma Historical Society's collection of out-of-print historical books that have been made available as e-books. Created over three years ago, this collection contains 22 books about Oklahoma and Texas history. The original publication dates of the books cover …

High-Throughput Phenotyping Of Rice Grains Subjected To High Nighttime Temperature Stress, Shannon Shareice Cunningham Aug 2021

High-Throughput Phenotyping Of Rice Grains Subjected To High Nighttime Temperature Stress, Shannon Shareice Cunningham

Student Theses and Dissertations

Rice grain size is affected by high nighttime temperature stress (HNT). Although studied in small subsets, the Rice Diversity Panel 1 has not been extensively studied to determine HNT effects on grain size. Accessions have been identified as tolerant and sensitive to HNT under greenhouse conditions (Dhatt et al., 2020). A high throughput phenotyping (HTPP) method and a PlantCV2 workflow were implemented in this work to determine grain dimensions. Seed area was found to be a good indicator of HNT tolerance with a coefficient of variation being 15%. Among tolerant accessions, seed area increased by an average of 1.57 mm2 …

Impact Of Parental Involvement On Serious Juvenile Offenders' Views Of Police Legitimacy With Parental Incarceration As A Moderator, Kyler Brinkley

Student Theses and Dissertations

The trust between the public and the police is a foundation of exemplary community law enforcement. Tensions between the public and police are at historic highs, so understanding what impacts attitudes toward the police is essential. Comprehending juveniles’ attitudes toward the police before they become adults can illuminate an issue beforehand. The current study aims to explore the impact of informal social controls on serious juvenile offenders’ views of police legitimacy. This study uses data from the Pathways to Desistance Study data set to examine how informal social controls, such as parental involvement, influence serious juvenile offenders’ perceptions of the …
