Assessing The Impacts Of Sea Level Rise On Land-Use Across The North-Eastern Parts Of The Uae Coastal Areas Using Remote Sensing Technology, Khawla Ali Mohammed Albedwawi

Theses

The consequences of global warming and climate change would result in a considerable rise in sea level. Other larger consequences on coastal lands, agriculture, buildings, and facilities are expected. The goal of this study is to assess the effects of Sea-Level Rise (SLR) on various land uses in the UAE's North-Eastern coastal districts (Fujairah and Kalba cities). Four SLR scenarios will be developed through the QGIS platform and the Landsat images that have been acquired from the USGS Earth Explorer. The area will be observed over 20 years (2000 – 2020). The second goal of this study is to develop …

Eyes In The Sky: An Introduction To Remote Sensing, Ashley York

Library Workshops

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand basic definitions and common applications of remote sensing technology
  2. Know how to acquire freely available remotely sensed imagery
  3. Learn how remotely sensed data can be used to visualize different land covers on Earth’s surface in a GIS

Description:

Remote sensing is defined as the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object. This means that the human eye taking in visible light reflected by objects is technically remote sensing! But the science of remote sensing is generally based on the scanning of the Earth by satellite or aircraft in order …

Blindspotting And Covid: The Gentrification Of Racism, Ashley Starr-Morris Oct 2021

Blindspotting And Covid: The Gentrification Of Racism, Ashley Starr-Morris

Journal of Religion & Film

The novel Coronavirus is not only exposing old patterns of racism and systemic inequalities, but deepening them as well. The notion of blindspotting, as described in the film by the same name, is used to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic impacts the “spiritual emergency” or crisis of racism in America. "Blindspotting" is an image or situation that can be interpreted in two ways but is understood by some in only one way, thereby producing a blind spot. In 2020 and 2021, we see segments of American society, from politics to white Christian nationalism, upholding a sacred canopy of exceptionalism by …

What Is "United" About The United States?, Gary S. Lawson Oct 2021

What Is "United" About The United States?, Gary S. Lawson

Faculty Scholarship

Jack Balkin’s The Cycles of Constitutional Time aims, among other things, to preserve and promote what Jack regards as “democracy and republicanism,” understood as “a joint enterprise by citizens and their representatives to pursue and promote the public good.” My question is whether and how this normative project is possible in a world full of perceptions of social, political, and moral phenomena akin to the white dress/blue dress internet controversy of 2015. Even if Madison had the better of Montesquieu in 1788 (and that is questionable), the United States has grown dramatically since the founding era, in a patchwork, and …

Against The Philosophical Project Of “Biologizing” Race, Anthony F. Peressini Oct 2021

Against The Philosophical Project Of “Biologizing” Race, Anthony F. Peressini

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This paper critiques philosophical efforts to biologize race as racial projects (Omi and Winant, Racial Formation in the United States). The paper argues that the deeply social phenomenon of race defies the analytic schema employed by biologizing philosophers. The very (social) act of theorizing race is already in an involuted relationship with its target concept: analyzing race must be seen as a racial project, in that it simultaneously helps to manage how race is represented in society and helps organize society’s resources along particular racial lines. Such biologizing projects are rife with moral and political dimensions and have …

Governments, businesses, and civil society organizations have diverse policy tools to incentivize adaptation. Policy tools can shape the type and extent of adaptation, and therefore, function either as barriers or enablers for reducing risk and vulnerability. Using data from a systematic review of academic literature on global adaptation responses to climate change (n = 1549 peer-reviewed articles), we categorize the types of policy tools used to shape climate adaptation. We apply qualitative and quantitative analyses to assess the contexts where particular tools are used, along with equity implications for groups targeted by the tools, and the tools’ relationships with transformational …

Praxis And Paradox: Inside The Black Box Of Eviction Court, Lauren Sudeall, Daniel Pasciuti Oct 2021

Praxis And Paradox: Inside The Black Box Of Eviction Court, Lauren Sudeall, Daniel Pasciuti

Vanderbilt Law Review

In the American legal system, we typically conceive of legal disputes as governed by specific rules and procedures, resolved in a formalized court setting, with lawyers shepherding both parties through an adversarial process involving the introduction of evidence and burdens of proof. The often-highlighted exception to this understanding is the mass, assembly-line processing of cases, whether civil or criminal, in large, urban, lower-level courts. The gap left unfilled by either of these two narratives is how “court” functions for the average unrepresented litigant in smaller and nonurban jurisdictions across the United States.

For many tenants facing eviction, elements of the …

Interaction Of Contact Herbicides And Timing Of Dicamba Exposure On Soybean, Mason C. Castner, Jason K. Norsworthy, L. Tom Barber, Trenton L. Roberts, Edward E. Gbur Oct 2021

Interaction Of Contact Herbicides And Timing Of Dicamba Exposure On Soybean, Mason C. Castner, Jason K. Norsworthy, L. Tom Barber, Trenton L. Roberts, Edward E. Gbur

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Dicamba residues in sprayers are difficult to remove and may interact with subsequent herbicides, including contact herbicides labeled for use in soybean. Without proper tank cleanout, applicators treating dicamba-resistant and non–dicamba resistant crops are at risk of contaminating the spray solution with dicamba residue from previous applications. Experiments were conducted in Fayetteville, AR, in 2018 and 2019, with the first experiment evaluating consequences of dicamba tank contamination with contact herbicides and the second experiment addressing the impact of dicamba exposure on a glufosinate-resistant soybean cultivar relative to a contact herbicide application. Experiments for tank contamination and timing of dicamba exposure …

Bird Nests As Botanical Time Capsules: Dna Barcoding Identifies The Contents Of Contemporary And Historical Nests, Alex Rinkert, Tracy M. Misiewicz, Benjamin E. Carter, Aleezah Salmaan, Justen B. Whittall

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Bird nests in natural history collections are an abundant yet vastly underutilized source of genetic information. We sequenced the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer to identify plant species used as nest material in two contemporary (2003 and 2018) and two historical (both 1915) nest specimens constructed by Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) and Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis). A total of 13 (22%) samples yielded single, strong bands that could be identified using GenBank resources: six plants (Angiospermae), six green algae (Chlorophyta), and one ciliate (Ciliophora). Two native plant species identified in the nests included Festuca microstachys, which was introduced to the …

Explaining Florida Man, Ira P. Robbins Oct 2021

Explaining Florida Man, Ira P. Robbins

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

"Florida Man" is a popular cultural phenomenon in which journalists report on Floridians' unusual (and often criminal) behavior, and readers relish in and share the stories, largely on social media. A meme based on Florida Man news stories emerged in 2013 and continues to capture people's attention nationwide. Florida man is one of the latest unique trends to come from the Sunshine State and contributes to Florida's reputation as a quirky place.

Explanations for Florida Man center on Florida's Public Records Law, which is known as one of the most expansive open records laws in the country. All states and …

Exploring The Relationship Between Mandatory Helmet Use Regulations And Adult Cyclists’ Behavior In California Using Hybrid Machine Learning Models, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki, Maria Chierichetti

Mineta Transportation Institute

In California, bike fatalities increased by 8.1% from 2015 to 2016. Even though the benefits of wearing helmets in protecting cyclists against trauma in cycling crash has been determined, the use of helmets is still limited, and there is opposition against mandatory helmet use, particularly for adults. Therefore, exploring perceptions of adult cyclists regarding mandatory helmet use is a key element in understanding cyclists’ behavior, and determining the impact of mandatory helmet use on their cycling rate. The goal of this research is to identify sociodemographic characteristics and cycling behaviors that are associated with the use and non-use of bicycle …

The Future Of Wildlife Conservation Funding: What Options Do U.S. College Students Support?, Lincoln R. Larson, Markus Nils Peterson, Richard Von Furstenberg, Victoria R. Vayer, Kangjae Jerry Lee, Daniel Y. Choi, Matt Kelly, Richelle Winkler, Et. Al

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Insufficient funding is a major impediment to conservation efforts around the world. In the United States, a decline in hunting participation threatens sustainability of the “user-pay, public benefit” model that has supported wildlife conservation for nearly 100 years, forcing wildlife management agencies to contemplate alternative funding strategies. We investigated support for potential funding options among diverse college students, a rapidly expanding and politically active voting bloc with a potentially powerful influence on the future of conservation. From 2018 to 2020, we surveyed 17,203 undergraduate students at public universities across 22 states. Students preferred innovative approaches to conservation funding, with 72% …

Is Regional Mobility Control Effective In Minimising Covid-19 Spread? Lessons Learned From Jakarta’S Large-Scale Social Restriction, Fisca Rizkiani Azmi, Bevaola Kusumasari

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

In times of crisis such as a pandemic, local governments serve a pivotal role as first-hand responders in managing emergencies in local areas, with the expectation of an effective policy to implement. Notwithstanding, there are limited literature studies of emergency management on local governments, concentrating on identifying policy effectiveness by the implementation in the field. This article emphasizes the effectiveness of local policy implementation in managing the emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Jakarta area, with the centralization on Large-Scale Social Restriction as the case study. The objective is to provide lessons related to coronavirus for the government to …

Climate Attribution Science And The Endangered Species Act, Jessica A. Wentz Oct 2021

Climate Attribution Science And The Endangered Species Act, Jessica A. Wentz

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

Climate change poses an enormous risk to plant and animal species across the planet. Mean global temperatures have already increased by approximately 1ºC, causing environmental changes that affect species abundance, distribution, behavior, physiology, genetics, and survival prospects. These changes, combined with other human stressors, have already resulted in the extinction of some species and imperiled many others. Some scientists describe this as the “Holocene” or “Anthropocene” mass extinction event. The fate of many vulnerable species will depend on emissions trajectories and mitigation efforts. But there is also a compelling need for adaptive species management in the context of a changing …

A Biological Assessment Of Water Quality In El Placer, Ecuador: The Effect Of Agriculture On Stream Health And The Quality Of Historical Versus Current Drinking Water Sources, Danielle Kleinberg

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Although fresh water is one of Ecuador’s most abundant resources, high quality drinking water for its inhabitants is scarce (Wingfield et al., 2021). The most prevalent sources of water pollution in Ecuador are domestic waste, silver and gold mining, oil production, and agricultural chemicals (Buckalew et al., 1997). El Placer, a village located in Tungurahua, Ecuador, is highly dependent on agriculture as a source of income. The first objective of this study was to determine the effect of agriculture on the El Placer’s Tía Anita Stream through comparing the water quality at three sites with varying agricultural influence. The second …

South Africa went through a gruesome system of segregation known as apartheid, from 1948 until 1994 which enforced spatial and racial divisions through limiting access to spaces, places and (im)mobilities. Despite the formal ending of apartheid in 1994, and some changes it brought to the divided and wounded country, the neo-apartheid spatial structure of the regime lives on in some form or other, particularly in Cape Town. This research paper sought to explore the racial segregation in the mother city further, by examining the daily movements of students from the University of Cape Town (UCT), who are part of the …

I Choose, You Decide: Checking The Judiciary From Within, Jeremy N. Sheff Oct 2021

I Choose, You Decide: Checking The Judiciary From Within, Jeremy N. Sheff

Cardozo Law Review

Efforts to rein in partisanship (or the perception thereof) on the Supreme Court tend to focus either on what Ryan Doerfler and Samuel Moyn call “personnel reforms”—changes to the selection, appointment, or tenure of Justices—or on what they call “disempowering reforms”—changes that divert some of the judiciary’s authority to the political branches, for example via jurisdiction stripping. I propose a different—and perhaps complementary—reform, which would achieve some of the goals of both types of reform without requiring a constitutional amendment. I propose that the selection of a case for the Supreme Court’s discretionary appellate docket should be performed by a …

Incentivizing Fair Housing, Stewart E. Sterk Oct 2021

Incentivizing Fair Housing, Stewart E. Sterk

Articles

Restrictive land use regulation has thwarted the upward mobility of many Americans, particularly Americans of color. Local restrictions imposed by affluent municipalities have limited access to safe neighborhoods, better housing, and good schools. Racism and economic self-interest have both played a role in exclusionary practices which have contributed to high housing costs that place a strain on the entire economy.

Fair Housing Act litigation has been one weapon in the fight against these practices. Despite the Supreme Court's decision in Texas Department of Housing & Community Affairs v. Inclusive Communities Project, Inc. , disparate impact litigation faces significant obstacles that …

Reflections Of Arabic Literature On Architectural Representation, Othman El Obeidi, Aya Salamah, Rola Ayoub, Abed El Karim Owaydat

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Literature and architecture have long been connected where both are forms of art; literature is a verbal form of art whereas architecture takes a social form. Both domains play a major role in heritage inheritance and representation and are immensely linked to each other; each is capable of representing and embodying the other. Gloomily, in light of digital technology, Information Age, and onslaught of globalization, the reflections of the practices of Arabic literature on architectural representations, after being practiced together since ancient periods, have retracted in recent times thus architecture in the Arab cities has started to veer far away …

Developing Design Guidelines Towards Safer Park: The Case Of Ramlet El Baida, Valerie Nader Kassem, Ayman Afify

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Public urban park is a very important feature in the city, it is responsible for the behavior of the cities and gives an identity of the city besides country to portray it in front of the people. Well maintained park leads to healthy life and well-being. Also, it holds social value and attachment of people to it. Despite wide consensus on the importance of public parks for city dwellers’ social lives as well as their physical and mental health, popular discourses and journalist reports reflect a growing demonetization of public space in many cities around the world. This is because …
