Intangible Cultural Heritage: A Benefit To Climate-Displaced And Host Communities, Gül Aktürk, Martha B. Lerski May 2021

Intangible Cultural Heritage: A Benefit To Climate-Displaced And Host Communities, Gül Aktürk, Martha B. Lerski

Publications and Research

Climate change is borderless, and its impacts are not shared equally by all communities. It causes an imbalance between people by creating a more desirable living environment for some societies while erasing settlements and shelters of some others. Due to floods, sea level rise, destructive storms, drought, and slow-onset factors such as salinization of water and soil, people lose their lands, homes, and natural resources. Catastrophic events force people to move voluntarily or involuntarily. The relocation of communities is a debatable climate adaptation measure which requires utmost care with human rights, ethics, and psychological well-being of individuals upon the issues …

The Understanding Of The Other In Orientalist And Primitivst Art, Jasmine Groves, Jasmine A. Groves May 2021

The Understanding Of The Other In Orientalist And Primitivst Art, Jasmine Groves, Jasmine A. Groves

Honors College Theses

In 1978, Edward Said published Orientalism, a seminal book that shed light on one of the “leftovers” of European colonialism. In it, he describes the West’s attempts to exotify and romanticize the non-Western world. While the Near East, the Far East, and East/Southeast Asia are geographic terms that correspond to specific countries and cultures, the “Orient” is a Euro-American fantasy that only exists to contradict the West. The term is intentionally vague in order to satisfy any and all exotic desires that a consumer may have.

A great deal of European and American artists found inspiration in the exotic …

Markov Model Composition Of Balinese Reyong Norot Improvisations, Taylor Flanagan, Robert Rovetti May 2021

Markov Model Composition Of Balinese Reyong Norot Improvisations, Taylor Flanagan, Robert Rovetti

Honors Thesis

Markov models are mathematical structures that model the transition between possible states based on the probability of moving from one state to any other. Thus, given a distribution of starting points, the model produces a chain of states that are visited in sequence. Such models have been used extensively to generate music based on probabilities, as sequences of states can represent sequences of notes and rhythms. While music generation is a common application of Markov models, most existing work attempts to reconstruct the musical style of classical Western composers. In this thesis, we produce a series of Markov chains that …

Video Game Sound As Educational Space, Leonard Grasso May 2021

Video Game Sound As Educational Space, Leonard Grasso

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Synergizing fields such as music theory, computing, musicology, cognition, and psychology, scholars and practitioners have approached game music from many directions. However, research on pedagogical usages of game music is still emerging. While many education scholars have researched game-based-learning (Bourgonjon et al, 2013; Simões, Redondo, & Vilas, 2013; Beavis, Muspratt, & Thompson, 2015; Hamari et al, 2016), music education authors have largely remained distant from ludomusicology (the study of music as it relates to play). I intend to bridge that gap by examining the intersections of game music and sound, player interaction, and learning. My research synthesizes the work of …

Yellow River Piano Concerto: A Synthesis Of Western And Chinese Characteristics, Jiahe Liu May 2021

Yellow River Piano Concerto: A Synthesis Of Western And Chinese Characteristics, Jiahe Liu

Dissertations

The Yellow River Piano Concerto is a valuable addition to the piano concerto repertoire for both historical and theoretical reasons. It has been performed frequently by Chinese pianists on many important occasions, such as National Day Concerts, New Year Concerts, and Spring Festival Galas. The Concerto is not only standard repertoire on Chinese stages, but it is also performed and recorded by leading international orchestras, such as the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. One of the possible reasons that made this Concerto successful is that it combines characteristics of Chinese and Western cultures. The …

Still Dreaming Of You: Selena's Discourse With And Continuing Impact On American Musical Culture, Hannah Lastra

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Selena Quintanilla Perez continues to circulate in popular culture, including MAC cosmetic lines, a Netflix series, and podcasts. As a result, her cultural influence continues to be passed on and shared with future generations. This thesis focuses on three aspects of Selena and Selena y Los Dinos: Selena’s music, Selena’s performance aesthetic, and Selena’s fandom today. Chapter 1 focuses on Selena y Los Dinos’ American musical influences, particularly studying the songs “Enamorada de ti,” “Missing my Baby,” and “Fotos y Recuerdos” and the presence of American genres of new jack swing, R&B, and rock within them. The High School Choral Classroom As A Platform For Cross-Cultural Education: A Content Evaluation Of The 2020 Tnmea Satb All-State Repertoire., Michael Ian Colavita May 2021

The High School Choral Classroom As A Platform For Cross-Cultural Education: A Content Evaluation Of The 2020 Tnmea Satb All-State Repertoire., Michael Ian Colavita

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, there is a push toward culturally responsive music education in response to a rapidly changing student demographic. However, teaching music from unfamiliar traditions presents a unique set of challenges for the music educator. The 2020 Tennessee SATB All-State repertoire provides one example of music selected with the goal of teaching a wide array of cultural traditions. This thesis analyzes these seven pieces from a musical and pedagogical perspective to demonstrate this collection’s utility for culturally responsive music education. Evaluation of the pieces demonstrated that while most of these works come from distinct cultural traditions, few present …

Projecting Ecuadorian Cultures In Andean Dream: A Compositional Exploration Of Psycho-Ethnomusicology For Electronics And Chamber Ensemble, Daniela Paez May 2021

Projecting Ecuadorian Cultures In Andean Dream: A Compositional Exploration Of Psycho-Ethnomusicology For Electronics And Chamber Ensemble, Daniela Paez

Master's Theses

The musical culture of Ecuador, despite being quite unknown to the world and to a great part of the Ecuadorian people, holds an unimaginable richness and diversity rooted in thousands of years of musical traditions. Mestizaje, the process of racial mixture that followed the European conquest, has encouraged homogeneity and uniformity. I am a part of this mestizo culture, that, in reality, does not hold the same worldviews as the diverse Indigenous Ecuadorian communities. The Kichwa community of Cotacachi, presented through musical materials in this thesis, experiences an undeniable connection between the rituals relevant to agricultural life, dance and music …

Development And Interactions Of Instructor And Student Musical Identities In A University Introductory Music Course For Non-Music Majors, Nicholas Booker

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate student and instructor musical identities in the context of a university music course intended for non-music majors. Participants were the instructor of an introductory music course and 16 of her students at a medium-sized university in the western United States. Study of this group of participants and their interactions throughout one 15-week semester led to greater understanding of their roles in music as well as better insight into the many ways in which they formed connections between music and their identity concepts. The research allowed for the development of assertions based on …

Becoming Culturally Responsive: A Guide For Music Educators., Bailey Haynes May 2021

Becoming Culturally Responsive: A Guide For Music Educators., Bailey Haynes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As America sees an increase in minority groups, providing an education that is beneficial and responsive to all cultures is a growing focus in the education system. One of the many roles of a music educator is to expose students to allmusic and music that is most meaningful to the students. Music educators are charged with providing students with musical instruction that is well rounded, and that will aid in the personal and educational growth of learners. Through culturally responsive teaching, defined as “a research-based approach towards teaching that connects students’ cultures, languages, and life experiences with that they …
