A Study Of Undergraduate Major On The Youth Electorate Within The Bryant Community, Jenna Birnbohm-Kaminski Apr 2021

A Study Of Undergraduate Major On The Youth Electorate Within The Bryant Community, Jenna Birnbohm-Kaminski

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

This thesis will carefully explore the relationship between undergraduate college major, and political participation and affiliation of young voters (ages 18-29). There has been a great deal of research in the field of voter behavior about this generation of young voters, and how they will impact the new electorate and overall political climate. An increasing commonality amongst young people is an undergraduate education of some kind. However, undergraduate students can choose their area of study, thus differentiating the exposure to information and experience of each student at a very impressionable time in their lives. A study of the political behavior …

Urban Inequalities: Measuring, Forecasting, And Understanding Human Health Implications, Bhartendu Pandey Apr 2021

Urban Inequalities: Measuring, Forecasting, And Understanding Human Health Implications, Bhartendu Pandey

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Urbanization, inequality, and human health are three of the biggest challenges facing society. Demographic projections from the United Nations suggest that the number of people living in urban areas will increase by ~200,000 every day, on average, between now and the middle of this century. A recent report suggests that inequality is rising in countries where 70% of the global population lives. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the significance of these challenges and points to an intricate interlacing between urban areas, inequality, and human health. This research is motivated by a pursuit to understanding how. It examines a central proposition …

Biogeochemical Controls On Greenhouse Gas Dynamics In Streams And Rivers, Kelly S. Aho Apr 2021

Biogeochemical Controls On Greenhouse Gas Dynamics In Streams And Rivers, Kelly S. Aho

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Streams and rivers are biogeochemical “hot spots”, simultaneously processing and transporting both terrestrially and locally fixed carbon and nitrogen. The greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) are (by)products of some of these biogeochemical processes, making streams and rivers significant natural sources of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The magnitude of greenhouse gas emissions from streams and rivers is highly uncertain, in part, because of the numerous controls on greenhouse gas production and export across spatial and temporal scales. This dissertation examines biological, physical, and chemical controls on greenhouse gas dynamics in nested streams and rivers, …

The Beef Industry: The Social Costs From An Ecological, Economic, And Social Perspective, Timothy Keathley

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

Beef products are a staple of western diets and are quickly becoming normalized in more parts of the world. Americans from 1910 to present day have consumed an average of 60 pounds of beef each year, with total beef consumption annually over 27 billion pounds (Beef, 2005). Red meat is a tempestuous topic of discussion. Red meat is a product that has nutritional benefits, is a symbol of status, and has a favored taste for many of its consumers. It can also be said that red meat is associated with health issues, animal cruelty, and environmental sustainability concerns. Jochimsen said …

Synchronous Marine And Terrestrial Carbon Cycle Perturbation In The High Arctic During The Petm, Ying Cui, Aaron F. Diefendorf, Lee R. Kump, Shijun Jiang, Katherine H. Freeman

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; 56 Ma) is considered to be one of the best analogs for future climate change. The carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of n-alkanes derived from leaf waxes of terrestrial plants and marine algae can provide important insights into the carbon cycle perturbation during the PETM. Here, we present new organic geochemical data and compound-specific δ13C data from sediments recovered from an early Cenozoic basin-margin succession from Spitsbergen. These samples represent one of the most expanded PETM sites and provide new insights into the high Arctic response to the PETM. Our results reveal …

Characterization Of Uranium, Lead, And Rare Earth Element Pollution In Natural Soils And Sediments, Hope Rasmussen

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Heavy metals in the environment add to the global burden of pollution, negatively impacting public health and ecosystem resilience. This study included projects regarding uranium (U), lead (Pb), and rare earth elements (REE) in natural samples, due to their known toxicity, ubiquity, and relevance in context to recent pollution trends. The first project focused on testing the potential of using a hydroxyapatite product as a remediation solution for U-contaminated groundwater and soil at an EPA Superfund site. The results showed that the U was sequestered in a highly crystalline mineral form within the solids, guiding the EPA to specify the …

Addressing The Energy Air Pollution Within The Ohio Area, Travis Mcconnell Apr 2021

Addressing The Energy Air Pollution Within The Ohio Area, Travis Mcconnell

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

Air pollution is the byproduct of the burning of fossil fuels and is a major issue within the Ohio area because of the lack of utilization of renewable and clean sources of energy. We emit tons and tons of pollutants into the environment each and every day, from when we hop in our cars or even when we simply turn on the lights in our homes. Essentially, anything that requires energy can be a cause of air pollution within the ecosystem. However, it may be the case that it is time that we change our ways and try to conserve …

First Year Research Writing: “Research Into Your Roots And What It Tells You About The World”: Two Assignments, Polina Belimova

Open Educational Resources

This is a two-fold first-year college writing Research Writing assignment. In the first part, students do research into their own family/community history. In the second part, they select a particular person, moment, place, or time that they learned about during their genealogical research, and this will become the subject of their research project in the areas of sociology, geography, environmental studies, psychology, or medicine. Students choose what question they would like to explore further and the question itself stems from their family history findings.
