The sensitivity of the advanced LIGO detectors to gravitational waves can be affected by environmental disturbances external to the detectors themselves. Since the transition from the former initial LIGO phase, many improvements have been made to the equipment and techniques used to investigate these environmental effects. These methods have aided in tracking down and mitigating noise sources throughout the first three observing runs of the advanced detector era, keeping the ambient contribution of environmental noise below the background noise levels of the detectors. In this paper we describe the methods used and how they have led to the mitigation of …

Climate change is driving an increase in the number of El Niño and marine heatwave events, especially in the last decade. These events when coupled with localized stressors can lead to dramatic changes to the local ecology. Kelp forests, found in temporal ecosystems across the world, are among the most vulnerable to these extreme environmental shifts. Off the southern west coast of North America, kelp forests are experiencing warmer waters and additional stressors from the introductions of new species brought in by boats through busy ports. This study examined how the 2014 heatwave and the 2015/16 El Niño coupled with …

Tearful crying is a ubiquitous and likely uniquely human phenomenon. Scholars have argued that emotional tears serve an attachment function: Tears are thought to act as a social glue by evoking social support intentions. Initial experimental studies supported this proposition across several methodologies, but these were conducted almost exclusively on participants from North America and Europe, resulting in limited generalizability. This project examined the tears-social support intentions effect and possible mediating and moderating variables in a fully pre-registered study across 7007 participants (24,886 ratings) and 41 countries spanning all populated continents. Participants were presented with four pictures out of 100 …

Transforming Business Education: 21st Century Sustainable Mba Programs, Robert Sroufe, Stuart L. Hart, Hunter Lovins
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Business education should give students the skills to solve complex global challenges. It should align management practices with goals for a sustainable future. Sadly, few management schools even discuss the real issues business leaders face today. This article challenges others to develop a curriculum that embeds sustainability in the core of their programs. The authors argue that faculty and business school leadership should move beyond “saddlebag” initiatives that bolt sustainability onto the traditional, shareholder primacy-driven core. This article profiles three programs as case studies transforming business education to prepare leaders to achieve a more sustainable world. Business schools are torn …

In this study, analysis of water, and soil samples, air quality, and noise levels in Ukawu Pb-Zn mine were examined. The pH of the water samples, at 6.7, exceeded permissible levels for potable water established by the National Environmental Standard Regulatory Agency (NESREA), European Union, and World Health Organization (i.e., 7.0-8.5). The soil pH was 5.2, which indicates acidity due to acid mine drainage. Low soil pH is evidence of acid mine drainage. All cations detected in water and soil were below standard limits considered harmful by the NESREA. Measurements of precursor gases, such as O3, NO2 …
Consumer Intention To Adopt Dockless Bike Sharing Scheme In Southern China Based On Value-Attitude- Behavior Model, Bing Zhu
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This study aims to reveal the influences of personal value priorities on consumers’ environmental attitude and their intention to adopt fourth-generation shared bikes (DBSS) in Southern China based on the value-attitude-behavior model. Also, how environmental attitude mediates the relationship between predictors and consumer intention to adopt DBSS is tested. Three hundred sixty-three self-administrated questionnaires were collected in Nanning City in China. Quota sampling, judgmental sampling, and convenient sampling techniques were applied for data collection. In terms of data analysis, the partial least square structural equation model (PLS-SEM) approach based on Smart PLS 3 was employed to evaluate the structural equation …

This paper frames the approach to determining policies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which either prioritise human health security protection or economic vulnerability. In this paper, the human security concept will be used to explain COVID-19 as a health security problem due to the existence of an existential threat. However, the same approach is not applicable in looking at COVID-19 as an economic security problem. Because the existential threat is less visible in human economic security aspects, it tends to be more appropriate to look at COVID-19 as the stressor that strengthens human vulnerabilities. This paper uses a qualitative …

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a threat to global peace and security. This paper intends to provide a better understanding of the nature of interactions between climate change and events that undermine peace through a systematic review of recent literature. It highlights major methodological approaches adopted in the literature, elaborates on the geographic focus of the research at the nexus of climate change and peace, and provides further information on how various climatic stressors, such as extreme temperature, floods, sea-level rise, storms, and water stress may be linked to different events that undermine peace (e.g. civil conflict, crime, intercommunal …
