Mentoring Black Teens During National Pandemics: Mutually Beneficial Service, Temitope F. Adeoye, Myson Burch, Terrell Glenn, Rachel Scarlett, De'shovon M. Shenault

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

Black youth face systemic educational and social barriers that impede their development and achievement. Research shows that mentoring equips youth to tackle these barriers and use their racial background as an asset. Additionally, college students have limited opportunities to engage in long-term service to local communities. The Heads Up Teen Mentoring Program was begun in September 2019 to provide local Black teens access to Black role models committed to helping them achieve their goals. We currently serve five local Black teens and pair them with five Black graduate student mentors. We engage in monthly group and one-on-one sessions with our …

Research And Practice Of Conservation Tillage In Black Soil Region Of Northeast China, Man Ao, Xudong Zhang, Yixin Guan

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Compared with soil degradation of black soil of other areas in the world, which caused by conventional tillage regarding as ploughed with residue return, soil degradation in Northeast China caused by rotary-till and residue remove or burning is more serious. Conservation tillage with residue cover and no or reduced tillage is one of the most important techniques for the protection and utilization of black soil. This paper briefly presents the derivation and definition of conservation tillage, and its main techniques in the world, as well as the issue of application and extension in China. Over the past 15 years, the …

The Effect Of Replacing Classrooms With Home Rooms In Distance Learning (Behavioural Study For Jordanian University Students), Samar Waled Abu-Saleh, Fanan Hammoodi Khazaal

Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات

This study aims at determining the extent to which students are affected by replacing classrooms with homerooms in terms of the students’ learning performance and academic achievement through being affected by the determinants of the internal space on their learning behaviour, and finding appropriate solutions for the internal domestic spaces to be suitable for the general academic atmosphere. The descriptive analytical approach was used by the two researchers through building the basic concepts and their indicators (those that are related to the fixed variable and the dependent variable, in other words, the home rooms). The questionnaire was then applied to …

‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go?’ Investigating Recruitment And Retention At Sustainable Organizations, Mackenzie Law, Madison Sexton, Erik Mediros, Amanda Lillie, Luke Vavricka, Kelly Mccarthy, Arman Shahi, Teague Vreeland, Braxton Lee, Andrew Webb

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

As the private sector continues to come under scrutiny from stakeholders for sustainability behaviors, it has become increasingly important to effectively assess the cost-benefit of sustainable corporate social responsibility (Stahl et al., 2020). The increasing value for sustainability has led to a reassessment of the bottom line that includes people, planet, and traditional notions of profit. The widespread adoption of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics and ratings (Howard-Grenville, 2021) demonstrates that organizations need to strive to perform to maintain competitive relevance. However, the question remains, how do industry professionals assess the value of implementing sustainability in organizations? HR professionals, …

Emmanuel Bailly: The Advisor And Friend Of Christian Youth, Ralph Middlecamp

Vincentian Studies

Frédéric Ozanam’s legacy overshadows contributions of other Society of Saint Vincent de Paul founders, such as Emmanuel Bailly. A man who worked in the background, Bailly should be better recognized, both for his role as a founder and for the part he played in the restoration of Catholicism in post-revolutionary France. Ralph Middlecamp discusses Bailly’s life and work, which was rooted in his Vincentian heritage. A teacher and a journalist, Bailly mentored young men in faith and good works, and the Conference of History that he started brought the Society’s founders together. He published several newspapers addressing contemporary social issues …

Climate Variability In The Woodbush Granite Grasslands Of South Africa: Effects On Grassland Diversity, M. Muller, F. Siebert, A. Linstädter, D. I. Thompson, S. J. Siebert

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

South African old-growth grasslands are hyper-diverse ecosystems which evolved under naturally occurring rainfall variability. It is predicted that future precipitation patterns will become more variable, which could lead to increased frequencies of extreme and prolonged drought events. This study aimed to investigate the effects of climate variability on plant diversity of the fragmented pristine, mistbelt grasslands of the Woodbush Granite Grasslands (WGG) at Haenertsburg, South Africa. It has been reported that species composition has changed substantially in this area, as disturbance-tolerant species enter these systems or existing competitor species become more dominant. A Temporal Beta-diversity Index (TBI) was used to …

Proceedings - Climate Change: Threats, Risks And Vulnerabilities, Centre For Business And Economic Research (Cber), Hanns Seidel Foundation, Pakistan

Conference Proceedings

Pakistan is one of the world’s most climate vulnerable countries ranking fifth in the list. It has experienced various disasters in recent decades, including floods, droughts and intense heat waves causing thousands of fatalities. Moreover, due to the deterioration of the Indus Delta approximately 1.2 million people dispersed and shifted to urban hubs like Karachi. Researchers have projected an increase in frequency and severity of these catastrophic environmental events, causing food and water scarcity, health and socio-economic issues in coming decades.

Climate change is no longer a threat but has become an existential crisis. There is a need for immediate …

The Behaviors Of A Captive Father-Daughter Pair Of Ateles Geoffroyi Geoffroyi, Felicia Gordian Oct 2021

The Behaviors Of A Captive Father-Daughter Pair Of Ateles Geoffroyi Geoffroyi, Felicia Gordian

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

The Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens intends to introduce new members to the black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi geoffroyi) enclosure. The behavioral analysis of captive animals within their human-made zoo environments is pertinent information for zookeepers before such an introduction can be made. To contribute to that goal, this study observed the behaviors of a father-daughter pair of black-handed spider monkeys. This study observed their vocalizations, habitat utilization, enrichment utilization, conspecific interactions, and interactions with humans to better understand how they interact with their environment as well as their group dynamics. This behavioral baseline can then be utilized to …

Human-Computer Interaction Research And Education--Crossing Boundaries Between Academic Research And Industry Practices, Yasushi Akiyama Oct 2021

Human-Computer Interaction Research And Education--Crossing Boundaries Between Academic Research And Industry Practices, Yasushi Akiyama

Interface: The C3 Lab Knowledge Commons

In this paper, I will discuss my own experience and approaches to enhancing students' learning in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) classes by adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates academic research and industry practice. Due to the inherent interdisciplinarity of HCI, and to foster a set of "soft" skills known in Interdisciplinary Studies as the "cognitive toolkit," I invite expertise from the other departments at my university as well as industry professionals to give lectures, facilitate workshops, and oversee projects. These collaborations have produced several insights and have had a positive impact on the participants.

Enriching The Vision Of Campus Kitchen: A Recipe For Justice, Bryan W. Sokol, Melissa A. Apprill, Liam D. John, Ashlei Peterson

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Campus Kitchen provides an environment that is ripe for community-based, experiential-learning experiences, especially on the topic of Eco-Justice. Student volunteers have substantive opportunities to investigate and promote various food justice and hunger advocacy initiatives, as well as form meaningful personal relationships with those whom they serve. Volunteers are encouraged to learn everything from the practical skills of food preparation to the social forces that underlie food insecurity in the community. Still, many Campus Kitchen participants remain unaware of the seriousness of food waste and “throwaway” cultural attitudes that perpetuate hunger. This paper presents data illustrating the different levels of understanding …

Mechanisms Of Pierce's Disease Resistance In Grapevine (Vitis Vinifera L.): From Xylem Structure To Whole Plant Function, Ana Clara Fanton Oct 2021

Mechanisms Of Pierce's Disease Resistance In Grapevine (Vitis Vinifera L.): From Xylem Structure To Whole Plant Function, Ana Clara Fanton

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is a xylem-dwelling bacterium that causes Pierce’s disease (PD) in grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.), and disease in a range of other ecologically and economically important woody plants. To successfully colonize the xylem network, Xf cells accumulate on the vessel walls and form a biofilm. The biofilm contains cell wall-degrading enzymes, allowing the bacteria to breach the intervessel pit membranes. Thus, Xf can move from one vessel to another and colonize the xylem network. Degraded intervessel pit membranes and the production of tyloses in response to the presence of Xf likely contribute to significant declines in both hydraulic …

Three Essays In Environmental And Transportation Economics, Stephanie Margalit Weber Oct 2021

Three Essays In Environmental And Transportation Economics, Stephanie Margalit Weber

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The transportation sector contributes around 30% of US greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing these emissions is an important part of any large-scale climate policy. This dissertation examines three questions about policies and programs designed to reduce emissions from heavy-duty trucks and cars, using a range of economic data and methodologies. The first chapter considers the recent federal fuel efficiency standards for heavy-duty trucks, which mandated that the average fuel efficiency of trucks sold by each manufacturer reach certain levels. To estimate the welfare implications of the policy, I develop a model of supply and demand in the sector using detailed data …
