Understanding The Molecular Mechanisms Of Photoferrotrophy And Phototrophic Extracellular Electron Uptake, Dinesh Gupta
Understanding The Molecular Mechanisms Of Photoferrotrophy And Phototrophic Extracellular Electron Uptake, Dinesh Gupta
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Several anoxygenic phototrophs grow by utilizing soluble iron or insoluble mixed-valence iron minerals (such as rust) as electron donors to fix carbon dioxide using light energy, a process called photoferrotrophy. Photoferrotrophs can also use electron donors such as poised electrodes that serve as proxies for rust via phototrophic extracellular electron uptake (EEU). Despite the recognition that these two related microbial processes contribute to various biogeochemical cycles such as iron and carbon, the electron uptake mechanisms underlying photoferrotrophy and phototrophic EEU are poorly understood. To address the key knowledge gaps in our understanding of these microbial metabolisms, here we characterized Rhodopseudomonas …

Mangroves sustain high soil accretion and carbon sequestration rates, yet it is still unknown if they can keep pace with increasing sea level rise (SLR) across a wider range of coastal geomorphic settings. Because accretion rates are controlled by mineral sediment inputs and organic matter accumulation, it is paramount to assess the relative contribution of root productivity to soil formation. Here, we evaluated root biomass, production, and turnover in three mangrove ecotypes to evaluate the role of soil nutrient limitation, stressors, and hydroperiod in controlling root dynamics in San Andres Island (SAI), a karstic oceanic island in the Caribbean Sea. …

Short story
After Rain, Louise Boscacci
After Rain, Louise Boscacci
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
Amidst climate chaos, words gather as a tipping point in after-affect. On January 4, 2020, the massive Currowan bushfire in New South Wales crossed the Shoalhaven River and raced into the Wingecarribee district of the Illawarra region south of Sydney. After two weeks of emergency warnings, a new preternatural “catastrophic” danger rating, watch and act alerts, and heatwave temperatures, the fire front arrived on a blunt southerly gale in the evening. Climate breakdown had delivered locally and personally. The next day, light rain, more drizzle than shower, visited the home fireground.

Critically Imagining A Decolonised Vision In Australian Poetry, Cassandra Julie O'Loughlin
Critically Imagining A Decolonised Vision In Australian Poetry, Cassandra Julie O'Loughlin
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
Postmodern ecocriticism, given its broad range of perspectives, offers an agreeable platform for articulating a new, advanced and inclusive framework for a decolonising theorisation of literature and the environment. This article seeks to identify Australian Western decolonising poetry that sits in harmony with Indigenous aural and literary versions of communicative engagement with Country. The concept of human embeddedness in ecological relationships and biological processes as part of a complex matrix of interdependent things is embraced. In particular this article focuses on inclusivity and interconnectedness of all life forms to illustrate aesthetic and conceptual interfaces between Aboriginal Australia and Western poetics. …

A moderately acidophilic Geobacter sp. strain, FeAm09, was isolated from forest soil. The complete genome sequence is 4,099,068 bp with an average GC content of 61.1%. No plasmids were detected. The genome contains a total of 3,843 genes and 3,608 protein-coding genes, including genes supporting iron and nitrogen biogeochemical cycling.
Contest Powwow: Sport And Native American Culture, Steven J. Aicinena Dr, Sebahattin Ziyanak
Contest Powwow: Sport And Native American Culture, Steven J. Aicinena Dr, Sebahattin Ziyanak
The Qualitative Report
The Native American powwow has served to maintain the culture of North America’s Indigenous peoples since before the arrival of European colonialists. In traditional forms of the powwow, competition is not common whereas contest powwows are characterized by the primacy of competition. We assess similarities and differences between the contest powwow and competitive sport found within the broader American society through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 14 competitive contest powwow dancers. We address a number of questions through the qualitative research process, such as what does the powwow mean to you? What are your primary goals for competing? We analyzed the …
Exposing Nuclear Power Plants, Sophia Austin
Exposing Nuclear Power Plants, Sophia Austin
Copley Library Undergraduate Research Awards
This paper will begin by outlining the eco-justice topic of nuclear power and its resulting nuclear waste, and then move on to examining and making claims about the justice (distributive, procedural, and recognition-based), evidence, and process behind the development and decommissioning of these plants. Through this, we will discover historical and present ties to racism - especially as we explore the relationship between nuclear power and the white racial frame, resulting in the objectification, oppression, and suppression of the voices of Indigenous communities and people of color throughout history and into the present moment. After addressing and reflecting on many …

Digitization Of Ecological History In The Driftless Area Of Minnesota, St. Mary's University Of Minnesota-Geospatial Services, Winona State University-Library Special Collections
Ecological History StoryMaps
The Winona County Historical Society (WCHS) and Winona State University (WSU) collaborated on applying for a Heritage Partnership grant to produce shared resources with the goal to educate the Winona community about the local ecological history of the area. The grant provided the opportunity to hire St. Mary's University of Minnesota - GeoSpatial Services to reconstruct a map fo the vegetative communities in the city of Winona based on a 1855 land survey and other available data. An 1862 transcription of the 1855 of the land survey was found in the WCHS Laird Norton Archive, which was the starting point …

Ecosystem functioning and community structure are recognized as key components of ecosystem integrity, but comprehensive, standardized studies of the responses of both structural and functional indicators to different types of anthropogenic pressures remain rare. Consequently, we lack an empirical basis for (i) identifying when monitoring ecosystem structure alone misses important changes in ecosystem functioning, (ii) recommending sets of structural and functional metrics best suited for detecting ecological change driven by different anthropogenic pressures, and (iii) understanding the cumulative effects of multiple, co-occurring stressors on structure and function. We investigated variation in community structure and ecosystem functioning of stream ecosystems along …

Motivations To Participate In Hunting And Angling: A Comparison Among Preferred Activities And State Of Residence, Matthew P. Hinrichs, Mark P. Vrtiska, Mark Pegg, Christopher J. Chizinski
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Motivations for hunting and fishing extend beyond harvesting game and include social, psychological, emotional, and physical benefits. We used data from a web-based questionnaire to compare relationships between preferred hunting or fishing activity types, state of residence, and motivations of hunters and anglers across the central United States (U.S.). Exploratory factor analysis yielded four motivation factors: nature, social, food, and challenge. Differences in terms of state were negligible across all motivation factors (η2p < .01), indicating similarity across states. Nature (η2p = .01) and social (η2p < .01) factors were the first and …

Vintage 2020: Rogue Valley Reference Vineyard Report, Gregory V. Jones
Vintage 2020: Rogue Valley Reference Vineyard Report, Gregory V. Jones
Linfield University Wine Studies Reports
This report describes the impacts of climate and phenology on vintage for the Rogue Valley in Oregon in 2020. A mild and dry winter in 2019-20 was followed by a dry growing season continuing the ongoing drought concerns for Oregon and the majority of the western US. The spring was relatively cool with mild frosts into early May, then followed by wide swings between early season heat then cool, wet conditions leading up to and during flowering. The result was widespread issues with fruit set leading to generally high amounts of shatter, smaller berries and clusters for many in the …
